Chapter 16: The Funeral of a Friend
The news of Zuma's death spread like a wild fire. For weeks it was the talk of the town. The pups woke up on a quite Sunday morning. Since The death of Zuma, life at the lookout was never the same as it was before. It was now always still and quite, no longer the bright and lively place it used to be. Chase woke the other pups up as normal and then walked into the lookout right next to Marshal. Since Zuma's death, Marshal Attitude had changed. He was not the happy, funny, clumsy Marshal any more. Now he was the silent, depressed, but still clumsy, version of Marshal.
"Hay, Marshal, how you doing," Chase asked trying to brighten the mood.
"Hay Chase, I'm fine," Marshal said in a depressed tone.
Chase frowned; He didn't like this new Marshal. He turned to Skye.
"Hay Skye, doesn't it seem like Marshal has Changed, but not in a good way," Chase said.
"Everest pup-napping and Zuma's death have taken a toll on him," Skye said with a frown.
"Should we go talk to him," Chase asked.
"What kind of Friends would we be if we didn't try and comfort him, come on," Skye said.
Skye and Chase walked up to Marshal; instinctively Marshal and Chase hugged each other.
"Is everything alright Marsh," Chase asked with concern.
"Yeah, everything's fine," Marshal said, obviously lying.
"Come on, where's our happy Marshal, the Marshal that would always make a joke when he tripped and make us all laugh, where is the Marshal that we know and love." Skye said.
"Oh Skye, I'm afraid the Marshal you once knew is gone," Marshal said.
"Where did he go, and when will he be back," Chase joked in an attempt to cheer Marshal up.
"He's dead I'm afraid, he went into a burning building to save someone and never came back out." Marshal said hanging his head.
"Oh, no that's not true, come on we are your friends we want to help." Skye said.
"Yeah, well Zuma was my friend too," Marshal said.
"Marshal please, we just want to help you," Chase said with sympathy.
"Thanks buddy, but you can't fix this one," Marshal said, getting up and walking back to his pup house.
It broke Chase and Skye's hearts to see Marshal like this. Nobody had ever seen Marshal like that; he was always happy and cheerful. Without Zuma and Marshal's lively laughter, the paw patrol just wasn't the paw patrol anymore.
That afternoon was Zuma's funereal. The pup's prepared for the funereal with heavy hearts, that afternoon, the whole town of Adventure Bay came to honor Zuma. First Mayor Goodway came up and thanked everyone for coming and then Ryder came up to speak.
"Thank you Mayor Goodway, I also want to thank you all for coming out today to honor the life and service of our beloved water rescue pup, Zuma. You all knew him, Zuma was one of the best pups I have ever raised, and now I try not to pick favorites here, I love all my pups the same, but I have never loved any of them as much as I do for Zuma right now. Zuma, he was brave and loyal to his friends and his job, despite us not giving him credit for his rescues, or not paying enough attention to him. I wish that he was still here, so I could tell him how much I love him. We will miss him greatly, but his faith in our lord and savior Jesus Christ was strong, so I hope to see him again one day in heaven. I again thank you all for coming out, that is all I have, I wish it was more I could say about Zuma, but alas that Is all I have, thank you." Ryder said.
After the funereal was a meal for the PAW Patrol pups and their closest friends. Mr. Porter cooked the good food. But despite Marshal always loving Mr. Porter's food, he didn't eat anything.
"Aren't you going to eat, Marshal," Chase asked.
"Can't, not hungry," Marshal said sadly.
"Marshal you haven't eaten anything all day, you've got to be hungry." Chase said with surprise.
"Nope, not hungry," Marshal said as he got up and left.
Needless to say, Chase was a bit worried for his friend, so he secretly followed him to see where he was going. Chase, being a super spy, was able to follow Marshal all the way to the grave yard. Chase instantly knew that Marshal was looking at Zuma's Grave stone. Chase then left Marshal alone and went to talk to Ryder about Marshal's strange behavior.
"Ryder I'm worried for Marshal, he hasn't eaten anything all day, I mean I know Zuma's death, but I don't want him to starve himself to death." Chase said with concern.
"I understand, we've already lost Zuma and you don't want to lose Marshal to, but give him some time, he'll come around." Ryder said.
But Chase wasn't so sure about that. 2 days past and Marshal still refused to eat anything. Chase went into talk to Dr. Heeler to ask her about Marshal's strange and possibly destructive behavior. He walked up the front desk at the Adventure Bay clinic.
"How may I help you," the lady behind the desk said without looking up from the paperwork she had in front of her.
"I need to see Dr. Heeler as soon as I can," Chase said with authority.
The lady looked up and her eyes widened as she realized who she was talking to.
"Oh, Officer Chase, sir, uh you need Heeler, hold up let me see if she's available." The lady said picking up a phone on the desk.
The lady talked for a few minutes, then hung up and looked back at Chase.
"She's available, down the hall, take a right and her office is room 34," The lady said.
"Thank you," Chase said as he proceeded through the door.
Chase followed the directions given to him and he came into Heelers office.
"Hello Chase how's you first day without your wheels," Heeler said.
"Oh, I'm fine, it's not me I'm here to talk about," Chase said.
Heeler's ears perked up.
"It's not, why are you here then, what's wrong," Heeler asked.
"It's Marshal, I'm sure you heard about Zuma's death, right," Chase said.
"Yeah, I'm sorry to hear that, and I'm sorry I couldn't come to the funereal, I was going to come but then an emergency came up in the hospital, anyway, what's wrong with Marshal."
"Well, Zuma's death hit him, Hard, and since the funereal he has refused to eat anything, and that was 3 days ago, and I'm worried that he'll starve himself, I wanted to ask you about what I should do," Chase said.
"He's depressed, I've seen it before, listen you have got to get something in his stomach, I've seen patient's nearly kill themselves by starvation."
"I figured we would have to get him to eat something but how," Chase asked.
"However you can, force it down his throat if you have to, he could die if you don't get food in his stomach." Heeler said.
"Thanks doc, I'll keep you updated on Marshal," Chase said.
"Just be careful, Marshals a strong dog, only resort to fighting last,"
"Do you think I would willingly fight my best friend, nah, only if I am forced to, bye and thanks again" Chase said.
"Take care of yourself Chase," Heeler said.
"Before I can take care of myself I have to take care of Marshal, PAW Patrol code: Rule 2, help others before you help yourself, see you round Heeler." Chase said.
Chase went home to confront Marshal. He found him in the lookout lobby, looking at a picture of Zuma.
"Marshal I need to talk to you," Chase said sternly.
"Not, now Chase," Marshal said.
"Nahah, right now, look, I'm know you sad about Zuma, and your worried about Everest, and I'm sorry it had to happen that way, but you need to eat something," Chase said quit bluntly.
"I told you, I'm not hungry," Marshal said getting up from the bean bag.
"MARSHAL, How dare you lie to me, you haven't eaten anything in 3 days, you are hungry, don't lie, please just eat something, don't make me fight you," Chase said.
Marshal jumped back by Chase's bold move. The other pups were also taken aback by Chase's sudden outburst. Marshal then gave Chase and angry and annoyed look.
"I've told you a million times already, I'm not hungry, now leave me alone," Marshal said attempting to walk around Chase.
"No," Chase said stomping his paw on the ground. "Now, you are going to eat something, whether it is willingly or by force. Please don't make me do it by force." Chase said.
"Oh, yeah, Make me, I dare you," Marshal said baring his teeth.
Chase and Marshal took up fighting stances. The other pups could sense a fight was coming, and they were very uncomfortable with the situation.
"Um, Ryder should we stop them," Skye asked.
"No let them go, Marshal needs to wake up," Ryder said, standing still but ready to intervene if necessary.
Marshal took the first threatening steps towards Chase, baring his teeth and growling softly.
"Please don't make me do this," Chase pleaded.
"Ha, alright Officer, what have you got," Marshal said as he threw the first punch.
But Chase was well trained in self defense. He dogged Marshals punch and grabbed his paw and threw him down on his back. Marshal grunted in pain and swiped his hind paw at Chase's legs, knocking Chase of his paws. Marshal leaped on Chase and clamped down on Chase's hip with his sharp teeth.
Chase yelped in pain and returned the attack with a bit to Marshal's hind paw. The two fought like this, biting and kicking each other, blood flowing from multiple places on Both Chase and Marshal. The other pups just watched on in horror.
Eventually Marshal managed to stand up on his paws and land a blow to Chase's maw. Chase stumbled back, blood now flowing from his mouth. Chase had almost no time to react before Marshal spun around and bucked Chase with his hinds. Chase flew back a few feet and landed with a sickening crack. Pain shot through his hip, Marshal leaped towards him. Chase put all the power into his hinds, despite the searing pain and kicked Marshal. Marshal was sent flying across the room.
Ryder decided it was time to intervene; he raced over to Marshal and held him down before he could get up.
"Rubble, help me hold him down, Rocky see if you can get some food down Marshals throat," Ryder commanded.
Rubble Raced over and hopped on Marshals back, while Rocky used his mechanical claw to force food into Marshals throat. Marshal struggled and gagged at Rocky's claw. Skye raced over to Chase's side, he was bleeding in multiple spots on his side, a pool of blood formed on the floor next to Chase's mouth. Chase breathed very heavily and winced and groaned at the pain.
"Chase, are you okay," Skye asked with concern.
"Gah, no, Skye I need Dr. Heeler ASAP, I'm afraid I am seriously hurt." Chase groaned in pain.
Skye threw her pup pack on and flew off towards the hospital. Meanwhile, Ryder, Rubble, and Rocky managed to get a sufficient amount of food in Marshals stomach. Marshal had been fighting and struggling so hard that by the end he had completely passed out.
Marshal woke up about an hour later. The pups were all sitting around him; looking at him like he had just committed a terrible crime. It took him a little bit to remember what had happened. He jumped up realizing what he had just done.
"Oh my, son of a mutt, I just fought Chase," Marshal said with fear.
"Yeah you did," Rocky said.
"Wait, where is he, what did I do," Marshal said, growing more afraid.
The pups all looked down at the floor, and Ryder looked a Marshal with said eyes.
"Ryder, what have I done," Marshal said.
Skye began to cry, Marshal looked at her with fearful eyes.
"Oh Marshal, you just sent you best friend to the ER." Skye cried, tears flowing from her eyes.
Poor Marshal, first Everest, then Zuma, and now he's accidently hurt Chase, find out what happens next on Adventures of the PAW Patrol, (hint, it has to do with Everest).
