"Tori, the greatest Pokemon trainer of our time, has won another Pokemon League. I can't believe it," The Announcer said, "He's just too good!"

Tori soaked in the fans' adoration, looking around the stadium filled with his "fans" made him feel like he had accomplished everything he wanted.

Someone was softly rapping on the door. Tori was sprawled on the bed, and the knocking interrupted the greatest dream he had ever had. The thing knocking on the door gave up and just barged in.

A sweet fragrance of lilies filled the room. A light rustling of leaves followed the figure into the room.

"Lily, stop waking me up so early," Tori mumbled.

A computer on top of the bed was playing a recording of a Pokemon competition beside it was an open notebook with illegible scrawling on it. Strangely the computer's camera was on despite Tori having never opened it.

The Lilligant dragged the curtains open, forcing light into his room. She turned off the computer that mumbled in the background and turned to Tori as if to ask him, explain what you were doing.

"I was just watching a Pokemon competition," Tori said tiredly, he was trying to remember what happened last night, "And then… I think I watched until midnight."

Lilligant scolded him for staying up so late just to watch a Pokemon battle, her words occasionally interrupted by a sigh. Tori couldn't help but laugh, he remembered when he could scold Lilligant. Of course, that was when she was still a Petilil, clumsy and ignorant. The change seemed to happen overnight, once a clumsy kid, the next day she turned into a maternal cleanliness freak. Lilligant forcefully combed Tori's hair, still grumbling on end about his poor sleep schedule. As soon as she finished, Tori tousled his mud-brown hair back to its regular and dirty state.

Lilligant and Tori walked out of his room. The kitchen was filled with the beautiful smell of lilies and freshly baked pastries Tori's mom jumped between the cluttered kitchen, turning on certain pieces of electrical equipment and closing fires, "What's that mom?"

"You know what it is," Tori's mom said proudly. She brought out a batch of rose cookies from the oven. A treat she learned from her time in Unova, sadly, before she could perfect her recipe, she had to leave Unova. Lilligant rushed over, bowed toward Tori's mom, and took one of the rose cookies. Lilligant nibbled happily on the rose pastry.

Tori took a bite out of the pastry, "Hm, tastes a bit different."

"Don't tell Lily," Tori's mom whispered. She looked over at Lilligant, who was still biting the soft pastry, "I jarred a bit of her flower nectar and added it in. I know she doesn't like it, but if she keeps secreting them at the rate she's going, our house is going to be bursting with her nectar."

"Isn't that cannibalism?"

Tori's mom waved it off like it was nothing. Tori stared at Lily for a while, it was always funny seeing her trying to eat something, especially because she had no teeth, "So do you want to go to any summer camp? I know how much you liked the one in Kanto. I can sign you up for it again"

Almost every summer Tori would go to a summer camp where he would research Pokemon, make new friends, and (most importantly) do Pokemon battles.

"Lily's a bit tired. Maybe next month?"

Tori's mom nodded, and she tossed another pastry in her mouth, "I'm off to work, don't stay too late watching Pokemon fighting again."

The minute her mom closed the doors Tori searched for nearby Pokemon tournaments to watch on his computer. He started taking notes on the strategies they used, searching for any ways he could implement similar ones with just Lily.

Tori would love to challenge the Pokemon League directly, however, he would need to defeat 8 gym leaders. In other words, he would have to beat 8 highly experienced Pokemon trainers and even though Lily was a strong Pokemon, she couldn't possibly beat those 8 gym leaders alone.

Tori's phone started to ring. He took his mom's old phone out of his pocket and answered it.

"Hello? Hello, hello? Is anyone there?" A voice came from the other side of the phone.

"I can hear you Hop," Tori replied, rolling his eyes, "My phone isn't that old."

"Just wanted to make sure," Hop said, "Cuz' the last time I saw it, it looked like the whole phone was gonna break apart."

"It's a flip phone, genius."

"A flip phone! We don't live in the 80s, get a Rotom Phone! If you don't have the money, I'll buy one for you."

Hop was a person that Tori met in summer camp, they instantly hit it off as they were equally obsessed with Pokemon battling. They had a friendly rivalry to see who could beat each other in a Pokemon battle.

"No, it's fine," Tori said. After some silence, he said, "Did you call me just to roast my phone, Hop? Or do you have something to tell me?"

"Oh, right," Hop's audio started to blur out, he seemed to have lifted the phone away from his mouth. Tori could hear some sort of noise come from the other side. He was starting to wonder whether his phone was broken when Hop finally spoke again, "You hear that?"

"No, my phone's too bad," Tori said, "Just say it."

"Well, I'm here in the city of lights, man."

"You're in Lumiose City?!"

"Yeah, and I'm coming down to Vaniville in about a week to see you."

"Is Leon there with you?" Tori asked, he cherished every moment he got to spend with Hop's brother, who was one of the greatest Pokemon trainers on the planet. Tori had only met Leon once and he barely got a chance to speak to him.

"Nope, Professor Sycamore invited me."

"Sycamore? You mean the guy who cracked the mystery of Mega Evolution?"

"No, it's an Astrological Professor," Hop said sarcastically, "Of course, it's that Sycamore."

"How did you sign up," Tori started thinking of a potential resume he could send to Professor Sycamore. After all, meeting Sycamore could get him some great contacts to teach him how to be a better Pokemon trainer. And that could make his dream easier to achieve.

"I didn't sign up, some reporter just knocked on my door saying she ran to Galar from Kalos and dragged me to Lumiose City."

"Oh, alright," Tori replied, defeated.

"Hey, don't worry," Hop replied, trying to reassure him, "You probably also got an invite, maybe it just got…lost in the mail?"

Lily, although she had no idea why he was so disappointed, comforted Tori in a language that no human could understand. Tori felt his emotions match Lily's calmness.

"Hey," Hop said, "Wanna battle when I get to Vaniville?"

Tori felt the sting of his last defeat, he eventually agreed to Hop's offer and hung up.

Afterward, he turned his computer back on and continued to study Pokemon battling. Now he had a goal: Beat Hop and reclaim his mental title of the best Pokemon trainer.

It had already been a few years since Hop and Tori had met each other face to face. Every time they meet each other, they battle each other. Each person tries to one-up the other with some new strategy they found or thought up.

Their last face-off was in Pokemon Oak's lab, where they disturbed every Pokemon relaxing there. Tori would never have battled here but was convinced by Hop to have a Pokemon fight.

"All right, Wooloo," Hop said, smirking, "Show him what you got."

Tori let out Lily, at the time just a Petilil, and said, "Ready to get beat again, Hop?"

"Don't be so sure about that," Hop said, "Wooloo, start with a tackle!"

The Wooloo happily charged at Lily, and she gracefully dodged the sheep, making him smack into a tree. Wooloo spun around from dizziness.

"Yet, again, effortlessly dodged," Tori teased. However, unlike past battles, Hop was barely upset by this, it seemed like he was happier "Lily, you know what to do."

Lily stayed far back from the spinning Wooloo, steadily pelting it with leaves that scratched under Wooloo's fur. Typically, Wooloo would be infuriated at this point, not listening to Hop's commands but the sheep Pokemon stayed calm, it was almost like he was channeling some energy.

"You've fallen right into my trap card," Hop imitated poorly, "Now, Wooloo!"

A glowing energy surrounded Wooloo's head, streaking down and covering his whole body, turning the sheep into a streak of light. It charged down at Lily at speeds higher than ever before.

"No more dodging now," Hop said, he watched the Sheep Pokemon turned ballistic missile run around the park with pride.

Tori could see the plan he had crafted to beat Hop crumble before him and Lily took a few hits before he could react, "Lily… use leech seed, we have to slow him down."

Seeds shot out of the injured Lily, latching onto Wooloo and absorbing his health, but the amount of health taken from Wooloo was measly compared to the amount of damage he was dealing to Lily. Lily suffered multiple blows from Wooloo's head, and unlike past battles, they never stopped coming.

"Lily, use leaf storm," Tori commanded, he hoped that Lily could still hear him, "We need him to get off you." Unfortunately, all the leaves Lily tried to summon were broken apart by the Sheep Pokemon and that failed attack drained every bit of energy from Lily and causing her to faint for the first time.

Tori rushed over to inspect Lily's crumpled body, only a few of her leaves had been bent, Tori guessed that she had only fainted because she was shocked, she had been hit. Hop rushed over and hugged his Wooloo, spinning him around and kissing him, "We did it! We finally did it! And it only took like twenty battles!"

"And you want to know how we did it?" Hop said, finally putting his confused Wooloo down. He gave time for Tori to reply before immediately interrupting and saying, "Well I'll tell you. I noticed that Dubwool could learn Zen Headbutt, and that would heavily increase the speed and resilience of my Wooloo, so I've been trying to teach him that move for over a year."

"So that first headbutt was a bluff?" Tori asked.

Hop proudly punched his chest, "Just to make you feel like it was a normal battle between us."

"How could I fall for such a simple trick," Tori muttered. His dreams of being a Pokemon master were shattered, how could he possibly beat anyone if he would fall for such a simple trick?

Hop saw Tori crying and asked, "Hey, are you okay?"

Tori nodded and ran to the nearby Pokemon center, holding Lily in his arms.

Tori had barely watched a few more minutes of the Pokemon battle he was studying before he fell asleep again. He had spent over half a day sleeping when suddenly a quiet knocking came on the door, Lily rushed over to get it. A brown-haired woman was standing on the other side, a Helioptile was perched on her shoulder, eying the room suspiciously. Tori jumped off the couch and the blanket that Lily had placed flew onto the floor. The woman replied, "Is Tori here? I am supposed to bring him to Professor Sycamore."

"Yeah, I'm here," Tori turned around and saw Alexa, the most famous reporter in all of Kalos.

"I am assuming you didn't get the invite," Alexa asked, he mistook Tori's silence as confusion of how she reached such a conclusion, then elaborated, "from looking at your shock."

Tori couldn't believe it. Hop was correct. He was going to meet Professor Sycamore, the greatest professor of the time, and he got the invite through Alexa herself.

"Hello?" Alexa asked, she walked up to Tori's shocked face and waved her hand over his eyes, "Are you okay?"

"Um," Tori stuttered, "Yeah, of course I am." He tripped on the blanket he had thrown on the floor.

"Fantastic!" Alexa said, she helped Tori, whose face was the reddest thing in the room, off the ground, the Helioptile perched on her shoulder jumped off. After making sure that Tori wasn't injured, Alexa asked, "Are you ready to go to Lumiose City?"

"But how?"

Alexa replied, "By train, of course."

"I can't pay."

"Who said you were paying," Alexa said, she took two tickets out of her bag.

Tori said excitedly, "Then let's go."

Lily shot him a stern look at Tori, one which he recognized far too well. Lily shoved Alexa into a chair, "What is your Lilligant doing?"

Tori sighed and replied, "She must think you're tired from the journey and wants you to stay here for a while."

"How polite of her," Alexa's tone changed positively, "Thank you, Lilligant."

Lily spent a few minutes finicking with the complex teakettle in the kitchen. After a few more minutes of stubborn trying, Lily allowed Tori to help her boil tea for Alexa. When Lily gave Alexa the tea, she was only able to get one sip as her Helioptile had started chugging the whole cup.

Tori watched Alexa's Helioptile drown himself in more tea for a few more painful minutes of impatient waiting, he asked Alexa, who was watching Lily learn how to use an electric teakettle, "Can we go now?"

"Alright," Alexa said, as she peeled her eyes away from Lily. She got to the door when she suddenly stopped, "Wait, you don't have your parent's permission, do you?"

Tori mentally slapped himself in the face, how could he forget about his mom? What if she disagrees and he'll have to miss the opportunity of a lifetime, "You're right."

"Then call them," Alexa said, "I will not bring you along if you don't have her permission."

Tori's hands shook as he dialed his mom's phone number.

"Hey," Tori's mom replied after what seemed like an eternity, "Do you need anything?"

"Can I go to Lumiose for a while?" Tori asked. Every moment his mom was silent was torture to him.

"Why?" Tori's mom replied suspiciously, "And how? You know we can't pay for a train ride to Lumiose."

Tori, because of his shaky hands, had dropped the old flip phone. Alexa picked it up and replied, "Yes, but Professor Sycamore can."

"Who are you?"

"Reporter Alexa, at your service," Alexa said proudly, "Your son has the chance to meet Professor Sycamore."

"Tori, I'm going to come home now to discuss this with you," Tori's mom said uncharacteristically serious, "You wait here, Alexa you can go if you want to."

"No, I'm staying," Alexa replied, "the tea in your house is too good," she glanced over at her Helioptile who had drunk 10 cups of tea all by herself and was lounging on the table lazily.

Helioptile had already gotten tired of waiting for Tori's mom. H climbed on top of Lily, (who was photosynthesizing for energy) opened his frills and started sunbathing. Alexa had asked Tori about Lily's intelligence for a while before having to take a phone call. Alexa and the person on the phone were speaking so loudly that Tori couldn't help but hear snippets of their conversation.

"Yeah, I'm currently at Tori's house."

Alexa looked proud as she replied to whatever the person on the phone asked, "Yes, the Tori that won the Pokemon Little League."

Tori felt happy after hearing that, the great Alexa was proud to be around him.

After Tori's mom declared she was coming home to talk with Tori, he tried to think of a way to convince his mom, however, when his mom finally did arrive it was Alexa who spoke to her first, she had got off her chair and blocked Tori's mom at the door. They both greeted each other politely, avoiding the point at hand for as long as they could.

"Mrs. Windsoar, meeting Sycamore would be life-changing for your son," Alexa pleaded, finally bringing Tori's mom's attention back to his son meeting Sycamore "Let him go."

Tori's mom nodded, "I know that, but I would like to speak to him first."

Tori sat down on the couch, opened his notebook, and checked his list of reasons to go to Sycamore one more time.

"In private," Tori's mom said, "Also put down that notebook, I don't want to have a staged debate with you."

Tori followed his mom back into his room. Clothes were strewn across the ground because Tori didn't bother to pick them up. Lily followed them into his room and started picking Tori's clothing up. Tori jumped out his window and Tori's mom sat down on his bed.

"Mom, you've always said I should follow my dreams," Tori said trying to remember one of his reasons, "And now you're denying me the best opportunity to become a Pokemon trainer?"

"I'm not denying it," Tori's mom replied, "I just want you to think it over."

"What's there to think over? If I just meet Professor Sycamore, I can start making my dream come true."

Tori's mom rubbed her eyes, she replied slowly, "You remind me of your dad sometimes, so hellbent on reaching his goal that he loses everything else in the process."

"I won't get arrested," Tori replied, the only thing that Tori knew about his dad was that he was arrested for dealing with a terrorist group from a faraway country.

"I didn't mean it like that," Tori's mom said.

Tori jumped off the edge of the window and walked towards his mom, "Then what do you mean? I lose my sanity or something when I follow my dreams." Tori laughed like he couldn't believe what he just said.

Tori's mom opened her mouth to say something but then stopped. She stared at Tori's determined face and said, "You got to promise me one thing," she tried to touch Tori's face, but he moved her hand away from him, "You have to promise me to live normally, no matter if you succeed or fail in becoming a Pokemon master"

Tori promised, but he didn't think of it much, because after he meets Professor Sycamore the path to his dream would be a well-paved road.

"Alright then," Tori's mom replied, clearly relieved. She kissed Tori on the forehead, "Start working toward your goal."

Tori hugged his mom one last time. After dragging Lily away from the dirty dishes, Tori left his apartment. Alexa picked up her Helioptile and thanked Tori's mom for her hospitality, "Tori you aren't going to say bye to your mom?"

Tori impatiently said, glancing back at his mom, "Bye Mom."

"Bye, kid," Tori's mom replied sincerely, she waved at him, "Safe travels."

Meanwhile, in a nearby apartment, a young member of the International Police watched as Tori, Alexa, and Lily left the building for the train station. She knew they were leaving for Lumiose today as she had intercepted/eavesdropped on both Alexa's phone call and Sycamore's invitation.

"Stay safe," A voice came from inside the police's earpiece, "This kid is a dangerous individual."

The young member scoffed at his remark, "No offense, Looker, but I've faced far worse."

"Did you even read his case file?" Looker asked in indignation, "He could be one of the strongest forces in the world."

The young Policewoman stepped over a manilla file she was supposed to read. She put on a pair of white gloves, one of which had a shiny stone embedded in it, "The guy's still a kid, Looker. What's the worst he can do." She laced up a pair of roller skates and left the apartment she had spent the last month in to spy on Tori, "I'll catch him and bring him back in a week, tops."

Looker sighed into his earpiece, "Whatever you say."

"Don't worry, Looker," The young policewoman said, "When have I ever failed to catch a criminal?"
