Chapter 4: Meet the Team

Kujo had spent hours searching the town for any sign of this mysterious squad. He scoured old warehouses, checked with locals, and even ventured into areas of Adventure Bay he hadn't explored before.

Despite his best efforts, every lead turned out empty. Exhausted and frustrated, he found himself back at the beach, the last place he had seen the mysterious figures.

Kujo slumped against a nearby rock, his frustration palpable as he stared out at the empty shoreline. He had been searching tirelessly for any trace of this "PAW Patrol" all day, but so far, his efforts had yielded nothing. He leaned forward, resting his hands in his face, and let out a groan.

"This won't be too hard right?" he mocked himself as this wasn't going to plan. He had been looking all day and nothing came up.

"Why am I even doing this?" he muttered to himself. "Why am I trying so hard for a town that probably hates me?"

His mind ran though each event of the past few days—the confrontation with his parents, the encounter with Mayor Humdinger, and the mysterious sighting in his window.

A wave of exhaustion and doubt washed over him. He slapped his cheeks, trying to shake off his weariness. "No," he said, determined. "I need to keep going.

He would get up, placing his hand on the rock for support. But it would feel a bit weird as it suddenly pushed in revealing a hidden button on the rock.

"What th-" but before he could even react he felt the ground disappear beneath him as he plummeted to the ground.

Kujo yelped as he fell down a long, winding slide, eventually landing in a soft pile of…bean bag chairs? Dazed, he looked around, realizing he was in a surprisingly well-furnished underground room. A high-tech monitor at the center of the room immediately caught his attention.

"What is this place?" his curiosity piqued. He hesitated briefly before stepping out of the pile of beanbags to explore the room. As he approached the monitor, he saw various screens displaying different angles of the town and its surroundings.

"Has this been here this whole time?" He thought aloud. And just as he began to examine the screens, he heard voices and footsteps echoing down a nearby hallway.

Panic set in, and he scrambled to hide behind a stack of storage crates. Holding his breath, Kujo slowly peeked through the narrow gap between the crates, his heart racing.

Through the gap, he saw a young brown haired boy enter the room, followed by a group of puppies. Though Kujo couldn't make out exactly what they were saying, their voices were serious, clearly discussing something important.

The young man looked focused, gesturing towards the monitors as if explaining some kind of plan.

"We can't wait any longer," He said, his voice firm. "We need to make our move soon."

One of the pups, A German Shepherd with a police vest, responded, "But we're not ready yet, Ryder. We need more time."

Kujo's eyes widened. 'Did that dog just talk?!' He thought to himself as listened closely. His body is completely still from both fear and excitement.

"I know, Chase," Ryder replied. "But if we don't act soon, Mayor Humdinger's plan could cause even more damage."

Kujo would just watch, stunned by what he was witnessing. That's the Mayor they're talking about... His mind raced, piecing together the fragments of conversation he'd overheard. This was the team he had been searching for—the PAW Patrol. And they were planning to stop the Mayor.

Another pup, this one wearing a firefighter helmet, stepped forward. "What if it's a trap?" he asked nervously.

"We have to be prepared for that," Ryder answered. "But we don't have much of a choice. The town is counting on us."

Kujo felt a rush of adrenaline. He had finally found them—the team everyone was talking about, the ones who might be able to save Adventure Bay. But what could he do? He didn't even know if they would trust him, especially after overhearing their plans.

As Kujo shifted his position to try and get a better listen, a small creak echoed in the room. Ryder suddenly stopped talking, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the area. Kujo's heart pounded in his chest as he stepped closer, inspecting the space near the crate

Suddenly, Ryder stopped mid-sentence, his brow furrowing. He turned toward the crates where Kujo was hiding, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.

Slowly, Ryder began to walk in Kujo's direction, each step closer causing Kujo's heart to race even faster. He pressed himself further against the crates, willing himself to disappear.

The boy's shadow loomed over the crates, and Kujo held his breath, convinced he was caught.

'Please don't see me, please don't see me…'

Ryder peered down at the crates, but after a moment, he shrugged, seeming to dismiss whatever suspicion he had.

"Guess it was my imagination…"

He would whisper before turning back to the pups, shaking his head. Kujo let out a quiet sigh of relief, feeling the tension in his chest release.

But just as he began to relax, Ryder suddenly spun around, standing inches away from the crates. Kujo barely had time to react as Ryder's face appeared right in front of him, his eyes filled with sharp curiosity and smugness.

"Gotcha," Ryder said quietly with a sly grin.

Before Kujo could think, his body acted on pure instinct. bolting from his hiding spot, racing towards the nearest exit. His heart pounded in his chest as he ran, desperate to get out of there.

"Hey! Stop!" Ryder called out, pulling out his tablet.

In a panic, Kujo didn't slow down, even as Ryder triggered the intruder alert. The exits around the room are immediately sealed, trapping Kujo inside. He skidded to a halt, realizing there was nowhere to run.

Breathing heavily, he turned back toward Ryder, who stood in the center of the room, tablet in hand, with the group of pups surrounding him. The German Shepherd—Chase—stepping forward, glaring at Kujo with suspicion.

"You shouldn't have come here," Chase said in a deep, authoritative voice.

Kujo, still stunned, could barely process the fact that he was standing in front of talking dogs. Everything was happening so fast, and the pressure of the situation weighed on him.

Ryder, taking a deep breath to calm himself, lowered the tablet slightly. "This is our secret base," he said, his tone firm but not unkind. "And you weren't supposed to find it."

"I-I didn't mean to…" Kujo stammered, his mind racing as he tried to think of an explanation. "I just… I was looking for answers. I didn't mean to cause any trouble."

Ryder's frustration was clear, but he wasn't angry—just tired. "This place is dangerous. You need to leave."

Before Kujo could protest, the large Shepherd—Chase—moved closer, still eyeing him carefully. The other pups, too, were on alert, standing close to Ryder and watching Kujo cautiously.

But amidst the tension, the pup wearing the firefighter helmet—Marshall—glanced at Kujo with a softer expression. Unlike the others, Marshall seemed to be looking at Kujo with a hint of sympathy.

He could see the confusion and fear in the boy's eyes, and something about it made Marshall feel bad for him.

"Ryder…" Marshall began quietly, his voice uncertain.

Ryder, still rubbing his temples in frustration, shot Marshall a quick glance but didn't say anything. He was conflicted, and it showed. But after a long sigh, he turned back to Kujo.

"Look," Ryder said, his tone gentler now, "I understand you want to help. But this is bigger than you realize, and it's not safe. You shouldn't have come here."

Kujo felt a sinking feeling in his chest. He had finally found what he was looking for! but now they were turning him away just like everyone else.

He wanted to argue, to explain that he could help, but Ryder's expression told him it was pointless. They didn't trust him, and they weren't going to let him be part of this.

With a heavy heart, Kujo turned toward the exit as it unlocked, and he walked out of the base, feeling more defeated than ever.

Marshall stood by Ryder's side, watching Kujo leave. He still couldn't help but feel bad for him. Something about the look in Kujo's eyes made Marshall think he was different.

Maybe they were being too hard on him. But Marshall kept his thoughts to himself, for now.

As Kujo left the base, the weight of his discovery and rejection hung heavy on him. He tried so hard to find them only to get pushed away like he was a nuisance. It played in his mind on loop and he couldn't get over it.

But then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw something—a distant glow in the sky. His heart skipped a beat as he realized what it was.

Fire.

Kujo's eyes widened as he broke into a sprint, rushing toward the source of the glow. As he neared the town, his worst fears were confirmed: a building was engulfed in flames, its fiery tendrils licking the night sky.

The crackling heat was intense, and people had already gathered in a panic, but no one seemed to be doing anything.

Kujo's heart raced. Where are the firefighters? Where's the help? He scanned the crowd, but all he saw were frightened faces, unsure of what to do.

"I need to do something…"

Without a second thought, Kujo turned on his heel and sprinted back to the secret base. They had to know. They had to help.

Kujo barged through the entrance to the base, out of breath and frantic. Ryder and the pups looked up in surprise as he stumbled into the room.

"What are you doing back here?" Ryder asked, his tone sharp and confused.

"There's a fire," Kujo panted, his chest heaving.

"A big one. It's down by the town, and no one's doing anything. You have to help!"

The pups exchanged uneasy glances, and Ryder frowned, rubbing the back of his neck.

"I already told you, it's not that simple. We can't just—"

"What do you mean you can't!?" Kujo snapped, his frustration boiling over.

"You're the PAW Patrol! You're supposed to save people, right? Isn't that your whole thing??"

Kujo stared at them in disbelief. His gaze shifted from one pup to the next, but none of them spoke up. Even Marshall, who had seemed the most sympathetic before, remained silent.

Ryder sighed, folding his arms. "I'm sorry, Kujo, but we have to protect ourselves too. We can't risk everything just for one fire."

For a moment, Kujo was speechless. He felt a deep sense of disappointment welling up inside him. 'This... this is what they've become?' he thought, his hands balling into fists at his sides.

Without another word, he turned away from them. His heart pounded in his chest, a mixture of anger, sadness, and disbelief swirling inside him.

"I don't get it…" Kujo muttered under his breath, shaking his head. "I don't get how you guys can just sit here and do nothing."

He cast one last look at the pups and Ryder, his expression hardening. "If you won't help, fine. But I will."

With that, Kujo waved them off, walking out of the base with firm, determined steps.

"Wait!" Ryder called after him, but Kujo didn't stop. He didn't even turn around. He was done waiting for others to act.

The PAW Patrol had let the town down, but Kujo wasn't going to make that same mistake.

The fire raged, its heat pressing against Kujo as he approached the burning building. People crowded around, their faces twisted in fear, murmuring anxiously. His heart raced as he overheard the panicked voices.

"There are still people trapped in there!"

His stomach twisted. 'People are still inside?'

Without thinking, he made his way toward the front of the burning building with the people in the crowd trying to stop him. But he didnt care.

The flames roared, the thick smoke choking the air. He could feel the heat searing his skin, but he didn't stop. This wasn't the time to be afraid.

Without thinking, he made his way toward the front of the burning building. The flames roared, the thick smoke choking the air. He could feel the heat searing his skin, but he didn't stop. This wasn't the time to be afraid.

Coughing violently, Kujo squinted through the black smoke, trying to make out shapes inside the building. Then he heard it—a cry for help.

He rushed forward, eyes scanning the floor until he spotted someone struggling to crawl toward the exit. Quickly, he grabbed them and pulled them outside.

The crowd gasped as Kujo helped the person to safety, and someone quickly rushed them off. But as soon as he caught his breath, someone else shouted from the crowd.

"There's still a kid stuck on the second floor!"

Kujo froze, looking up at the flickering windows. The flames were growing worse by the second.

Running back into the building, pushing through the thick smoke that clawed at his throat.

The heat was suffocating, and the flames seemed to grow louder and closer with every step. His lungs burned with every breath, but he forced himself onward.

Finally, Kujo made it to the staircase, which creaked under his weight as he climbed. The fire crackled dangerously around him, but he spotted a door at the end of the hallway. He could hear faint cries from behind it.

Kujo reached the door, throwing it open to reveal a small child huddled in the corner, terrified. His heart ached at the sight

"Hang on! I'm getting you out of here!" he shouted, rushing to grab the child and lifting them into his arms. The kid clung to him tightly as Kujo turned to dash back toward the stairs.

But as they reached the top of the staircase, there was a sudden, deafening crack from above. Kujo barely had time to react before part of the ceiling came crashing down, blocking their path with flaming debris.

Panic surged through him. 'We're trapped!' His mind raced, but the fire was spreading fast.

His gaze darted around, searching for another way out. Spotting a broken window nearby, Kujo made a split-second decision.

"Hold on tight!" he shouted, as he rushed toward it.

He pushed the window open and leaned out, his heart pounding. It was a short drop to the ground, but there was no time to hesitate. Carefully, he maneuvered the child through the window.

"Go!" he urged, "You're safe now!"

With a nod, the kid scrambled out and slid down to the ground below, where people from the crowd rushed to help.

Kujo let out a sigh of relief, but it was short-lived.Suddenly, the fire roared louder. Flames surged behind him, blocking his own escape.

He quickly turned, only to see that the rest of the room was now engulfed in flames. There was no way out.

Now trapped inside, Kujo slumped against the wall, exhaustion hitting him all at once. His chest burned with every breath of the smoky air, and the heat pressed in from all sides. He stared at the flames that surrounded him, realizing with a sinking feeling that this could be the end.

'At least the kid is safe', he thought, feeling a strange sense of calm settle over him despite the chaos around him.

Sweat dripped down his face as he tried to collect his thoughts. He had done something good, even if it wasn't enough. He'd tried. But as the fire closed in, Kujo's mind went blank. There was nothing left to do now but wait.

He blinked, his vision blurring as the flames danced around him. The edges of his consciousness flickered, much like the fire before him.

Everything felt distant now, like he was underwater, and every sound was muffled.

'I tried…' he thought. 'I saved the kid... that's what matters... right?'

His head swam, thoughts barely forming as his body grew heavier. He coughed, but it was weak, almost inaudible over the roaring blaze.

Suddenly, in the midst of the noise, something else cut through. Faint, but unmistakable.

'Sirens?'

Kujo blinked slowly, trying to focus on the sound. It was hard to tell if it was real or just his imagination. His ears were ringing, and his vision was fading fast. But there it was again—closer this time. Sirens. He was sure of it.

The faint wail of police or maybe even fire engines echoed in the distance, giving him a glimmer of hope. But it was too late.

His body was giving out. His eyes fluttered shut as the world around him started to fade. The last thing Kujo heard before everything went dark was the sound of those sirens, growing louder, but still so far away.
