"My very first pep rally!" Star gasped with hands on her cheeks, "I am so excited!" She was jittering with excitement and her eyes glowed with the star figments that always formed in her eyes when she was happy.
"Isn't enthusiasm a constant state for you?" he remarked, his tone laced with a gentle ribbing, yet underpinned by genuine curiosity about her perennial zest for life.
"Silence," she commanded softly, a finger to her lips as the principal stepped into the limelight, microphone in hand. "We now welcome Brittney Wong, our new head cheerleader," Principal Skeeves announced, introducing the Asian cheerleader with a flourish, as she was ceremoniously elevated by her peers, her ascendancy perhaps as much a product of her father's finance as her own merit.
Brittney, seizing the microphone with undue haste, turned to the assembly with a practiced, insincere smile. "Who here champions the Awesome Opossums?" she beckoned, eliciting a wave of cheers. "I adore opossums!" Star exclaimed, her enthusiasm undimmed by the gravity she now carried, "Their maternal instincts are remarkable."
"She's referring to our team, Star, rallying our spirits for the imminent clash with the Warriors," he explained, his voice a blend of amusement and respect for her innocence.
"Warriors?" Star echoed, a flicker of concern crossing her visage.
"Our adversaries from Silver Hill Prep," Alfonzo chimed in, his voice carrying a note of foreboding.
"A veritable massacre each year," Marco added, his words heavy with the weight of past defeats.
"The sole beacon of hope is Justin,"Naruto observed, his tone somber, "He's the only real talent to the team but one person can't carry a team in this case."
"This is unacceptable," Star declared, her voice a mix of resolve and desperation, "We have to help them."
"Perhaps you could join the Spirit Committee," Marco suggested, nodding towards a fervent student embodying the school's mascot with unnerving intensity. "They are relentless in their support.
"That is good idea," Star responded, a sudden determination propelling her to her feet, "We must gather supplies at once."
Naruto sighed, resigned to the inevitable derailment of his plans.
"While your enthusiasm is infectious, I shall abstain," he demurred, attempting to distance himself from the unfolding drama.
Naruto let out a minor snort. Of course, he was going to avoid it, "Don't worry Star I'll help you." Naruto conceded, rising to brush himself off, "At the very least to limit the potential damage."
"Thank you!" Star beamed, her spirit undimmed as she bounded off.
Their conversation meandered through personal arsenals and the legality of certain weapons. On one hand he knew he should really be stopping this before the insanity could occur but a flare of mischievousness in him was just to curious to see how things would turn out.
As they paused before a trophy case, a shrine to the fallen heroes of games past, Star's reflection on the cost of such contests lent a grave air to their mission.
He and Star approached the gymnasium. The door crashed open under Star's eager force, drawing immediate attention. Naruto's grimace deepened as a cheerleader's misstep resulted in an audible crash, suggesting injury.
"What the...?" Brittney's confusion was palpable as she watched Star approach, her focus shifting to a pompom in the hands of a black cheerleader. "Are these designed to detonate?" Star inquired, a blend of curiosity and mischief in her tone. The cheerleader, caught off guard, barely managed a response before Star, with an impish grin, dismantled the pompom, contemplating its flammability.
Brittney, attempting to reclaim order, dismissed the interruption with a flick of her wrist. "This year's secret arsenal," she boasted, hinting at a strategy that involved suggestive dance routines as a distraction.
"Is this your understanding of warfare?" Star's indignation flared, her critique sharp. "No true warrior would be swayed by such trivialities."
"Tell that to the true warrior who can't keep his eyes off Chantal's behind!" She drawled out with heated venom.
Exposed, Naruto coughed in his hand and diverted his eyes, while said brunette with a bobcut glanced away with a light blush.
"I know on planet 'Moo-ni' or wherever it is you're from, it may be okay to be stupid, but no pesky magical foreigner is gonna question my leadership!" Brittney twisted her cheeks with her fingers, earn an glare from the princess. She whips her hair around with a snap, "You are officially banned from the spirit committee!"
Naruto's disbelief was palpable. "You're ostracizing her for her heritage?" he challenged, the unfairness striking a chord.
"No, I'm banned her because she questioned my leadership." The Asian cheerleader quickly clears it up after realizing how she phrased it poorly.
"I see some things never change." He lamented with an undertone of sadness as something flickered in the girl's eyes before a sneer formed on her face.
"Yeah they don't. Quick to move on to your next fancy." The faintest of contempt in her voice. "If you two are done getting in our way we need to get back to our routine."
"Fine!" Star stomped away, "Look like it's all up to me."
"Star, hold on." Naruto followed his friend out, "Look there's something I got to tell you about all…"
"Okay, thanks for coming out!" Brittney hollered out with her megaphone, unknowingly cut Naruto off. "Come back never!"
That one little comment caused a surge of pettiness within the blond. He should have put a stop to things like he planned originally, but he decided to just let things play out.
Naruto found himself sitting with crowds on the benches as the cheerleaders perform their booty-shaking dance and he was eating some pocky sticks.
"Dude, snacking on candy during the game huh? Sure like to be out the norm don't you dude?"
Glancing up, " Hey Janna. Didn't expect to see you here. Didn't peg you as the sporty type outside of running."
"I'm just here for bloodbath. I bet some guys gonna have broken bones sticking out, spraying blood all over." She sardonically remarked.
"I wouldn't go that far, but there will definitely be a disaster." He replied as he saw a battled armor ready Star off at the side lines.
"STRANGER DANGER! STRANGER DANGER!" Both Naruto and Janna peek over the side to see few Warrior players carrying Ferguson, wearing opossum costume, away as he blew whistle over and over.
"That dude is being kidnapped. Should we like intervene or something?" She gestured to the screaming mascot.
"I highly doubt it'll be that serious." Naruto waved it off, "Its a high school football game. Not like anything serious is going to happen." The referee blow his whistle and the warrior team kick the ball up in air then charge forward…Only to trigger a landmine with a explosion. The ball land in Justin's hands but he drop it with a bloodcurdling scream, scattering with his fellow players and the crowd clear out as more explosions went off. One Warrior player suck into a blue vortex with a scream and a screaming male cheerleader fly through air from another landmine. Only two people stay in their seats were Janna and Naruto, the latter face palming and realizing that he really need to drill into Star's head that most people aren't as durable as he is and the former stare at the chaos with gaping expression.
"…Awesome!" Janna grinned widely, "This is the best game I have ever seen!" The referee run around with blowing whistle before he trip over a wire and the end zone split apart to release many creatures from giant squirrels to three-eyed firecats.
"Oh lord, I better intervene before people actually start dying." Playing down the candy the blond leaped down to the field. Both the remaining players and cheerleaders were now in danger of being attacked.
Brittney's scream pierced the air, laden with fear and vanity as she bulldozed through her fellow cheerleaders in a desperate bid for survival. "OUTTA MY WAY!" she bellowed, her voice cracking in panic. The chaos of the field, now resembling a war zone with its series of small explosions, was no place for someone who prided herself on her looks above all. "I AM TOO PRETTY TO DIE!" she shrieked, just as the earth beneath her trembled and gave way. From the gaping maw that formed, a colossal serpent emerged, its scales glistening under the harsh sunlight. With a swift motion that belied its massive size, the snake launched Brittney into the air, catching her effortlessly in its gaping jaws.
From the sidelines, the sight elicited a mix of horror and morbid fascination. "Oh shit, she's dead!" Janna always had a sense of morbidity and darkness to her, but seeing someone she knew about to be killed right in front of her was not something she thought would be happening.
And what happened was so fast barely anyone could register. The creature's head whipped back as the top portion was soon shredded.
Brittney, freed from the serpent's grasp, plummeted towards the ground, before being halted as she was caught and placed on the ground.
"N-Nar you..." She gently began uttering, a flux of emotions. An influx of memories and decisions as the regret of the choice that night began to resonate deep within her of the intensity of a smoldering fire.
"Get yourself to safety Brit." He gently uttered before he took off to help deal with the rest of the creatures.
Star was finally cleaning up the last of the creatures.
"NUCLEAR HEART HEALING HURRICANE!" With a flourish, she twirled her wand, unleashing a cascade of magical energy that enveloped the field. Her spell worked its magic, reverting all affected creatures back to their normal state, though the remnants of explosions and chaos persisted a while longer. As the dust settled, Star surveyed the aftermath of her actions, a frown creasing her brow. "Oooh, I've really messed up," she murmured, guilt and realization dawning upon her.
"You mean, we really messed up," Naruto corrected, approaching her with a weary sigh. His concern for her safety and the well-being of those involved was evident in his tone. "I was irresponsible and stupid. I should have corrected you, but instead of taking things more seriously I let things get out of hand."
As the reality of their situation sank in, the warrior player, caught up in the commotion, rallied his teammates. "LET'S GET OUTTA HERE!" he hollered, leading a hasty retreat off the field.
Justin, observing the sudden departure, couldn't help but point out the obvious. "Hey, they just forfeited," he noted, a smirk playing on his lips. The declaration was met with cheers from their side, lifting Star and Naruto into the air in a moment of triumph.
"Pretty sure creature attacks means they'll forfeit this, or I don't know." Naruto chimed in, his chuckle laced with amusement. Sure in the last few decades magic and the occult integrating into the world was finally settling to masses in the last few years, but creatures in themselves were still something that would cause a lot of panic and discomfort.
In the aftermath of the chaos that had swept through their lives, the days melded into a tapestry of recovery and resilience. It was during one of these days that Star found herself meandering down the corridor, her steps light and her voice carrying a melodic tune that danced through the air. She paused at the threshold of a room where the heart of dedication throbbed fiercely; inside, Marco was lost in the rhythm of his Tang Soo Do practice, his movements precise and deliberate as Naruto helped by moving the board of the wood and countering Marco's attacks.
"Whoa!" Star couldn't hide her astonishment, mixed with a playful jest at his unwavering focus. "You hate wood, too? Yeah, crush that wood! Wood's the worst!" Her words were a light-hearted echo, mimicking his martial fervor with a chuckle.
Marco paused, turning to her with a smile that belied the intensity of his earlier concentration. "No, I'm practicing for my upcoming Tang Soo Do tournament," he explained, his posture reflecting a discipline and focus that seemed almost alien amidst their usual, chaotic energy.
Star, meanwhile, was lost in a world of her own, her wand in hand as she debated between hairstyles with a distracted air. "Pigtails? Ponytail? Pigtails? Ponytail? Pigtails?" It was a whimsical dilemma that only she could face with such earnestness.
Marco's eyes lit up with a sudden realization, spurred by the sight of her wand. "Wait a minute!" he exclaimed, sitting up with newfound hope. "You have a wand! You could just fix my hand!"
"Marco not a good idea," Naruto tried to urge him. Star was getting hand of utility and combat spells, but healing was far from her forte. He knew it was his own laxness that resulted in the creatures even showing up and the injuries that had occured to people that night, but the possibility that things could go wrong were always a possibility.
Star turned, her hair a chaotic testament to her indecision, and offered a hesitant smile. "Um… That sort of spell is not really in my comfort zone. But if you like, I can give you a pretty wicked set of pigtails."
Deflated, Marco fell back onto his bed, the prospect of sporting pigtails hardly a consolation. "Pigtails?" he groaned, the idea as absurd as it was unhelpful.
"Tough luck there," Naruto sympathized, giving Marco's knee a supportive pat before he caught Star's gaze, a new idea sparking to life. "Tell you what, maybe there is a way we could help. We can do some late evening training and start practicing the healing spells and if and only if everything turns out alright Star can fix up your arm!"
"Please Star! My livelihood depends on you!" The latino begged.
"I'll do my best! Now I'll be able to kick butt and heal" Star's enthusiasm was infectious as she bounced around him, momentarily forgetting her hairstyle dilemma. "Oh, which one do you think suits me? Ponytail? Pigtail?"
"While I do think pigtails can make a girl look cute," Naruto offered, his opinion sincere. "Honestly a ponytail can make one not only look badass, but remarkably beautiful as well."
"Ponytail it is." Star decided, her cheeks coloring with a blush as she styled her hair into the style of a pony tail. She had only worn the style once or twice before but it wouldn't hurt to give it a longer try, she supposed. "S-So, where are we going to be training?"
"You'll see." He cryptically answered with a small grin. He didn't think he'd be bringing Star to this place so early, but he suppose there was no time like the present.
