Chapter 1: Brian
The Johnson House, Grove Street, Los Santos, San Andreas, 1987
Beverly Johnson stood at the stove in the kitchen, she was cooking breakfast for her three younger children, Carl, Kendl, and Brian Johnson. Beverly had a Redwood Menthol hanging out of her mouth as she stood at the stove scrambling eggs, she looked over to see Kendl studying for a big test at school. "Kendl! Go upstairs and get your brothers, the eggs and bacon are almost done." Beverly told Kendl. The younger girl stood up, she walked upstairs and walked into the bedroom she shared with her brothers. "Carl, Brian! Momma said to get your ass downstairs and come eat!" said through the door. "Kendl, I heard that! Watch your language!" Beverly shouted upstairs. "Sorry mom!" Kendl shouted back before turning around and walking downstairs, she sat back at the table and picked up her book. Beverly sat down a plate of eggs, bacon, sausage, and toast in front of Kendl. "Here, eat up. It's brain food girl." Beverly told Kendl. "Mom, I'm trying to watch my weight." Kendl replied. "Ah, shut with with that shit girl. You fine as hell." Beverly told Kendl. "Where are those two?" Beverly asked before putting out her cigarette and walking upstairs.
Carl was sitting there on the top bunk of his bed, he was looking at a car catalog. Brian was still getting dressed, it was game day at school and he put on his basketball jersey. Brian was a senior in high school, he was the top player on his team. Carl was a dropout, who sold weed for his brother Sean "Sweet" Johnson. "Hey man, this game is gonna be good. You know some scouts are gonna be there, right?" Brian asked Carl. "Man, you got it in the bag bro. Remember to think about a major when you get in whatever school you get into." Carl replied. Carl was never much for book smarts, he only had a few skills. He was athletic, but never played on a team in school. He taught Brian how to play basketball, but mainly Carl played for fun. "Ah, bro. When you're as good as I am, you don't need education. I'll be the next star player for the LS Streamers." Brian told Carl. Brian was a typical jock, he valued sports over school. He kept up on his school work, mostly to skate by and play ball. He had visions of being a famous athlete, mostly he wanted to prove himself better than his brothers who valued their gang more than making something of themselves.
There was a knock on the bedroom door, the knock got the boys attention. "Boys, come eat! Don't make me tell y'all again!" Beverly's voice shouted through the door. They heard her footsteps going down the stairs, the two brothers walked out the door and started downstairs to eat their breakfast. Carl walked to the table, he sat down and grabbed the piece of toast off his plate. Carl was about nineteen years old, he worked part time at a car wash in Idlewood. Where he sold his weed from, he was a prospect in his brother's gang "Grove Street Families" Sweet and his best friend Melvin Harris, who went by Big Smoke, ran the gang. Carl was a motorhead, who was obsessed with cars. He owned a Clover, which was old and worn out. Kendl and Brian were probably the two of the more talented kids, Kendl was borderline genius and a total bookworm. Kendl was by no means nerdy though, she was a beautiful girl with long legs, a curvy figure, and a beautiful face.
The front door opened, Sweet walked in the door. "Sean, come get you a plate." Beverly told her oldest son. "Hey, momma." Sweet replied before walking to the kitchen. He fixed himself a plate of eggs and toast. Sweet headed the Grove Street Families, a gang he started to combat the thugs who terrorized the hooded areas called The Ballas. Sweet sat down and started eating. "Hey, Carl. I need to speak with you outside after we eat." Sweet told Carl. "Ok bro." Carl replied. Sweet nodded before looking at Brian. "Hey, baby brother. You ready for your game tonight?" Sweet asked Brian. "Hell yeah!" Brian replied. His reply was met with a slap on the hand by Beverly with a wooden spoon. "You watch that cussing boy." She told him. "Sorry moms." Brian replied. "Boy, I know you're going to kill it." Sweet told Brian. "I'm gonna wipe the floor with those San Fierro players." Brian replied. "Just remember us when you make it to the top." Beverly said as she took a sip of coffee. Beverly stood up and grabbed her purse, she was wearing her uniform. Beverly worked as a nurse at the hospital in Glen Park, she made decent money and lived in a nice house. But it wasn't enough to really support her kids. "I am going to work." She said as she lit a cigarette. "Brian, clean up and do the dishes." Beverly told Brian. "Yes ma'am." Brian replied. "Carl, take your brother and sister to school." Beverly told Carl. "Ok, moms." Carl replied. Beverly walked out the door and left her children.
All four kids helped with the dishes, Sweet didn't mind. He appreciated the sacrifices his mother had made for them, his father had been killed in a drive-by after the twins Brian and Kendl were born. After the dishes were done, Sweet and Carl met outside. Sweet lit a blunt and took a hit, he handed it to Carl who took a big hit himself. "You got my money?" Sweet asked Carl. Carl reached into his pocket, he pulled out a stack of bills. "I took a few hundred out as my fee." Carl replied. "That's all good brother." Sweet told Carl as he took the money. "Use it to take Brian somewhere after the game, victory celebration." Sweet told Carl. "For sure. The bar at the end of Grove will serve us" Carl replied. "Just be careful brother." Sweet told Carl. "I'm going to go with Smoke and Ryder, we're meeting with Emmet for some stock." Sweet told Carl. "Later bro." Carl replied. Sweet gave the rest of the blunt to Carl and walked off the porch. Carl took another hit before putting it out and putting it in his cap.
Brian and Kendl walked out the door, they had their school bags on their back. The three walked off the porch and to the garage. Carl opened the garage and lifted up the door, inside was his Clover. It was a four seated two door car with a little wear and tear to it. Carl moved the seat up on the passenger side, Kendl got in the back. Brian rode shotgun, Carl got behind the wheel and drove the car out to the Cul de sac. Carl got out of the car and shut the garage door, before locking it and getting back in the car. The radio was on Playback FM, who were playing "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang. Carl jammed as he was driving, embarrassing his two younger siblings. "Brian, after your game tonight we're going out to celebrate." Carl told Brian. "Hell yeah, sounds good brother." Brian replied. "I'll tell mom if you got any funny business planned." Kendl told them. "And I'll tell mom about the pregnancy test I found in your trash can." Carl replied. Kendl clammed up at that remark, she opened her book slowly. Carl pulled up in front of the school, his siblings got out of the car. "Hey, I'll pick you up after school. We'll hang out a bit before your game." Carl told Brian. "For sure bro." Brian replied. The two younger siblings walked into the building, Carl left to go to work.
