Chapter 4: The Mysterious Stranger

By the time the four Vks stepped back into the classroom, it was empty. Now they had Evil Portraits with Mother Gothel. But when they walked into the dimly lit classroom, Lady Tremaine sat at the teacher's desk. What could this mean? Mal wondered.

"Unwelcome, class," Lady Tremaine gave her usual greeting. "Today we will learn how to attack."

"Attack?" A student in a ripped brown dress asked.

"Yes." Lady Tremaine replied. "Attack."

"Attack for what?" Jay wondered.

Lady Tremaine sighed. "You will see in time."

"I don't want to see in time," Mal argued. "I want to see now."

"I can't tell you now."

"Does my mom know about this 'attack?'" Mal asked.

"Well, no. Not yet." Lady Tremaine admitted.

"Would you like it if I told her?"

"Not very much."

"Then tell me why we need to attack, and I won't tell my mom."

"Fine." Lady Tremaine agreed reluctantly. "We are launching an attack on Auradon."

The whole class gasped as one, and then started shouting.

"Why?!"

"How?!"

"When?!"

"Huh?!"

"Where?!"

"The Isle of the Lost will come together to fight Auradon when the ships come to deliver food to us," Lady Tremaine announced. "We want to be free, don't we?"

The class murmured to each other.

"I don't want to be free in Auradon," Mal told her friends.

"But this is what Lady Tremaine and the stranger were talking about!" Evie said excitedly. "They want to prepare us for battle in school."

"You're right," Jay said.

Carlos widened his eyes. "Do we have to fight?" He asked, terrified at the thought of it.

"Yes," Someone replied, walking into the room. It was the tall, dark stranger they had seen earlier. "Everyone will fight."

"Who are you?" Mal demanded.

"Who are you?" The stranger asked back. He spoke in a deep, masculine voice.

"I am Mal, daughter of Maleficent, ruler of the Isle of the Lost."

"Ruler, eh?" A smile curled around his lips. "I would be honored to meet with her."

"She won't agree to meet you unless she knows your name," Mal said.

"She doesn't have to agree," The stranger corrected. "I will force her."

Everyone looked at the stranger with amazement and horror, but Mal just laughed.

"You don't know my mom," she said.

"Ya, you would be scared if you did," Jay added.

"I doubt that." The stranger narrowed his eyes. "When I show myself to the world, everyone will fear me!" The dark, mysterious stranger threw back his head, letting out a deep, long cackle. Then, he turned around and walked out the door, his dark purple cape dragging behind him.

"Well, that was weird," Jay said. The whole class was frozen with fear, a couple kids were shaking, but Mal just crossed her arms. It was unacceptable for the stranger not to be scared of her family!

"Where's Carlos?" Evie asked, a little shaken from the stranger's performance.

"Here," Carlos crawled out from under his desk.

"Why are you under your desk, man?" Jay asked.

"I dropped my pencil."

"You never had one," Mal observed.

"I didn't want the stranger to hurt me," Carlos admitted.

"We'll, he's gone now," Evie said. "Hopefully for good."

"If his intentions are what he said they are, we'll be seeing a lot more of him," Mal

said, frowning.

"Class, quiet down!" Lady Tremaine yelled.

"It won't help us be quiet for her to shout," Jay muttered.

"We will begin training for battle against Auradon tomorrow," Lady Tremaine continued. "You will all learn how to fence,"

"Done," Jay whispered.

"Do karate," Lady Tremaine continued.

"Also done," Jay grinned, air kicking Mal. Mall rolled her eyes, and playfully punched Jay's arm.

"And fight for your life," Lady Tremaine finished.

"Done," Jay said quietly.

"Liar," Mal whispered back. "You couldn't beat a Goblin in battle."

"I could," Jay insisted. "But I'd like to see you try."

"Come on," Mal said, "you know I'd win."

"Stop fighting, guys." Evie said.

"Uh, Mal? Jay?" Carlos whispered. "Lady Tremaine is staring at you."

"Are you two done fighting?" Lady Tremaine asked, as Mal and Jay looked up. A few

of the students had the nerve to snicker, and Mal shot them a warning glare. They immediately stopped.

Lady Tremaine cleared her throat. "Have wicked dreams, eat a rotten breakfast, and don't come to school too late," she said. "Class dismissed." The class started to file out the door, and Evie leaned over to Mal.

"Are you going to school tomorrow?" She asked.

"Do I have a choice?" Mal asked back.

"You could just not show up," Jay suggested.

"I don't want to miss anything involving the stranger. I need to know more about him."

"Then see you tomorrow," Evie waved, walking out the door. Carlos followed, and Jay left too. Mal sat alone in the classroom, thinking about what had happened. She thought about telling her mom, but decided against it, thinking about the things her mom might make her do. Fight the stranger, spy on him, complete impossible tasks. It wasn't worth it. Jay popped his head into the classroom.

"Coming, Mal?" He asked. Mal got up and joined him at the door.

"Ya," She replied. "Tomorrow we need to find out more about the stranger."

"Agreed." The friends departed, Jay going to his father's shop, and Mal to her house. In the morning, they would find out more. About the stranger, about the attack, and about their plan. We WILL find it out. Mal thought determinedly. In the morning.
