Ben tried not to think of Jamie as he went to bed that night. He had raised four children, all of whom had turned out to be reasonably well-adjusted. Even his little Scamp, or Marie, as she now insisted on being called. A small gift to her long-dead mother, she had told him. He smiled as he tried to sleep but for some reason he felt tremendous sorrow. A gift to his wife Marie, but he suspected it was more because the girl had finally grown up. He thought of his love and the tears came to his eyes. How he longed for her! Even after all these years. She would know how to deal with Jamie, she would know what to say. She would help him, guide him, as she always had. Three boys and a girl, but none of them had reacted the way Jamie had. They were simple, cheerful souls, accepting reward and punishment as part of life. But Jamie...He could not understand. It was a long time before he finally fell asleep.
