"Hiyori! Over here!"

Tarumi waved enthusiastically as they emerged from the alleyway between the hospital and the hotel. The undine was garbed in her school uniform but had left her green jacket in Mr. Ranryuu's apartment. She hopped away from Kurumu's side, hurrying to the trio waiting in front of the main entrance to the Fairy Tale office building.

This was the first time that Kurumu had seen Hiyori in her human form. Her scarlet locks cascaded down to her shoulders with a natural wave to them. Her thin arms were crossed below her slight bosom held within that crimson bikini. She regarded Tarumi's approach with bored, coral pink eyes.

Hasegawa and Shiraike looked very similar. Both had their bangs cut in a hime style with their tresses gathered up in a high ponytail that still almost touched the ground behind them. They also were dressed in the white blouses and tartan, pleated skirts associated with Yokai Academy. One big difference was Hasegawa had pistachio colored hair while Shiraike's tresses were a vibrant magenta.

Not wanting a repeat of last night, Kurumu was wearing her swimsuit beneath her school uniform. While she could have left her purse in Mr. Ranryuu's apartment, she had decided to bring it along. She wanted to take a few pictures of Ikinakawa with her phone, hoping that would not use too much of her battery.

"You are way too excited in the morning."

Tarumi giggled at Hiyori's remark. She gestured at Shiraike.

"Looks like someone has their school uniform."

Kurumu realized that Shiraike was shorter than her. That was not a common thing, considering Kurumu was one of the shortest girls at Yokai Academy, measuring at 154 centimeters. Tarumi was two whole centimeters taller than Kurumu and was shorter than these other two undines.

Hasegawa giggled when her friend shied away. She placed a hand on Shiraike's slender shoulder.

"Her father was at my brother's graduation. He was going to buy a full uniform for Aka but the store clerk told him about the school getting new jackets soon."

Kurumu grinned, stopping at Tarumi's side. Yokai Academy was retiring the old jackets which were made of thick, canvas like fabric. The new jackets might be available as early as May.

"I hope you enjoy your first year."

"It's too bad we don't know which homerooms we are in."

Hasegawa smiled at Hiyori's remark.

"They will have your homeroom assignments posted on the day of the Welcoming Ceremony."

Kurumu smirked, glancing over her shoulder.

"I didn't even go to mine."

Mr. Ranryuu walked alongside his daughter at a leisurely place. He was garbed in the standard Fairy Tale attire while his daughter had on a peach sundress that was identical to the one she had worn yesterday.

"You weren't at the Welcoming Ceremony?"

Kurumu smiled, turning her attention back to the confused look from Hasegawa.

"My mother didn't schedule me a bus until Sunday morning. I didn't find out which homeroom I was in until the next day when I walked to school."

Mr. Ranryuu let out an exaggerated sigh as he arrived with his daughter.

"I hope you girls don't give my daughter too hard of a time."

Ranryuu giggled, backhanding his shoulder.

"It's not like I'm babysitting them."

"Have fun guarding the books."

Mr. Ranryuu smirked at Tarumi. He nodded, slipping around the girls to step up onto the central porch.

"Be back here by six if you want a nice dinner."

"You can count on it!"

Kurumu giggled with the other girls when Tarumi held out a thumbs up. The father chuckled, shaking his head as he tugged open the door and slipped out of sight.

"So what are we doing first in Ikinakawa?"

Tarumi started off in the direction of the jump station. Hasegawa and Shiraike turned about, following on Tarumi's heels. Kurumu quickly fell in step with Hiyori as the graduate trailed behind them.

"Hanging out with friends is pretty much the only thing to do in Ikinakawa. If nobody minds, I would like to visit Mami first."

"I'll need sunscreen."

Hasegawa giggled at Shiraike's request.

"We can stop in the convenience store."

Kurumu frowned as they drew closer to the open archway for the jump station.

"Convenience store? I thought there was no power in Ikinakawa."

"It has a generator and is right next to the jump station and the barrier to the real world. Don't get your hopes up though. It has very limited stock. Kuminagawa has much more to offer."

Kurumu smirked at Ranryuu's explanation as they passed under the archway. The place was the same as it had been a week ago. Lights were suspended from a black deck, giving the room enough visibility to distinguish colors. A pair of guards dressed in Fairy Tale uniforms was stationed at each of the twelve hatched doors spaced about the room's perimeter.

Tarumi was making her way to the concierge in the center. The same two ladies garbed in Fairy Tale attire were stationed there. One had dark, wavy locks which fell almost to her waist while the other possessed shoulder length, frosted blue curls. These women ceased their banter when Tarumi neared.

"Destination?"

Tarumi stopped, lifting up on her toes to place her hands on the black marble counter.

"Ikinakawa. There's six of us."

The curly haired woman looked them over as they all settled behind Tarumi. She picked up a notepad, scribbling inside it.

"Head to room twelve and follow instructions."

Tarumi skipped away, prompting everyone to follow. They made their way to the door on the right which was closest to the arched opening. The two burly guards at their destination regarded their approach with beady eyes. Kurumu felt their approval of her appearance despite her wearing a school uniform. It would take much baggier, loose clothing to hide her curves.

The guards must have realized their intentions. The taller one moved to the door, grabbing the wheel and spinning it. He was still in the process of loosening the seal when they arrived.

"Has everyone here been to Ikinakawa before?"

Hasegawa nodded, pulling Shiraike closer to her side.

"We've visited Umidou's family a few times."

"Tarumi didn't mention an Umidou."

"Because I was only bringing up kids a year younger than us. Suisei is two years younger than us."

The hinges squealed as the guard drew the hatch aside.

"Wait in there until you're called for."

Tarumi drawled out an affirmative, hopping through the opening first. Seeing Shiraike hesitate, Kurumu entered the dark room next. It was probably identical to the last jump station room she had been inside. There were no light fixtures, making the open door the only source of light.

"I'm curious but what happens if there is someone in the room we are jumping to?"

Tarumi giggled as Hasegawa helped her friend into the dark room. Hiyori was already inside.

"That never happens. In Umiman, odd numbered rooms are for arrivals and even numbered rooms are for departures. I think the reverse is true for the other communities."

Shortly after Ranryuu stepped inside, the door was closed, casting them in completed darkness. Kurumu breathed in shallow as she heard the wheel tighten on the other side.

"Do those women contact Ikinakawa somehow to let the other station know we are coming?"

Tarumi let out a thoughtful note.

"I don't think so. They probably just keep count of how many people leave the city."

"Then how would the other guards know when anyone arrives?"

"You haven't been in stations enough to notice, but there is a chime that lets the guards know when people arrive. They usually are quick to open the door."

Hearing Ranryuu's explanation, Kurumu paused. She recalled that the door had been opened within seconds of their arrival in Umiman. She wondered if there was some sort of button that these guards pushed to activate the transport. Not that she had seen anything like that but it would make sense.

"I'm still curious what kind of magic makes this possible. Do you think it's witch magic?"

Tarumi and Ranryuu laughed while Hiyori snickered.

"You must not know much about witches."

"Actually she's good friends with Ms. Sendou. I'm surprised that she doesn't know about Fairy Tale's stance on witches."

Kurumu grimaced at Hasegawa's mild remark.

"It's not like Fairy Tale haven't used witches. Lady Chuujitsu was one of Fairy Tale's region commanders. She made several magic devices for them over the decades."

There was a thoughtful pause.

"That's news to me."

"Same but Ms. Kurono might be right. They did let Ms. Sendou's grandfather become the Headmaster of a prefectural school."

"Yea, you're right. Maybe this is powered by witch magic. I've never given it much thought."

Ranryuu giggled at Tarumi's response to Hasegawa.

"I'm guilty of that. I don't even know how a microwave works."

Kurumu had to laugh with the other girls over that. Her mirth was cut short when her body suddenly felt lighter. In the next instant, she had a massive headache as she breathed in thin air. This sensation was almost like that time she had flown to Hong Kong when a creature put a hole in the side of the plane.

"Oh, my head."

Ranryuu giggled weakly at Tarumi's complaint.

"Going up always feels worse."

"It's worse than my dad's dry rooms."

"Decompression sucks."

The screech of the door tore painfully into Kurumu's senses. She held her hands over her ears as the din persisted for many long seconds. After an eternity, the door was pulled back with the sharp groan of hinges. Bright light pierced the darkness, causing Kurumu to avert her eyes.

"Step lively, folks. We don't have all day."

Kurumu grimaced, shielding her eyes when she looked back towards the light. Her ears were now ringing which only made her headache worse. She whimpered slightly, watching Ranryuu step out. Hasegawa and Shiraike followed the graduate out before Tarumi gave Kurumu a nudge.

"Come on."

Still clutching her head, Kurumu shuffled over to the door as Hiyori exited the dark chamber. When she lifted her foot up to step through the opening, she once again realized how much lighter her whole body felt. She set her right foot firmly on the outside of the chamber, gingerly moving her other foot out. It almost felt like she could float off the floor if she was careless.

Lustful thoughts filled up her core, shocking some sense back into her. The guards flanking the door were appraising her looks. Both men were about Nijiro's height and had slender bodies wrapped up in Fairy Tale uniforms lacking tassels. One guy had blue eyes and his blond hair styled in a crew cut. The other had hazel eyes and his mint locks arranged in a simple middle part.

"You okay?"

Kurumu managed a smile as Tarumi grabbed her left arm. The blond guard moved to close the hatch.

"Yea. Just taking time to adjust."

Tarumi giggled, steering Kurumu away from the guards.

"It's so much faster to adjust going down than up."

This space was surprisingly small. It was a square room with a ceiling grid holding white acoustical tiles and lights. A pair of guards flanking a hatch identical to the one she had passed through stood on her left. The wall in front of her was painted white, lacking any windows or doors.

"Name."

"Ranryuu Miyoko."

A glass booth flanking a revolving gate was on Kurumu's right. A woman with short, dark locks whom was garbed in Fairy Tale attire was seated inside this booth, speaking through slits carved into the glass. Ranryuu stood at the counter protruding from the booth as the other girls sauntered over to join her.

"School and year of graduation."

"Umiman junior high, class of 2003."

The lady pulled out a book from beneath her desk, flipping through it. After a few seconds, she nodded.

"There you are. Pass on through."

The lady pushed something that caused a buzz. Ranryuu pranced into the rotating spokes of the gate, moving to the adjacent space. The lady looked up with dark eyes as the gate ceased moving.

"Next."

Hasegawa presented her shy companion.

"This is Shiraike Akatsuki. Umiman junior high, class of 2006."

The lady flipped through a few sheets of a thick book. She stopped at a page, moving her finger about.

"Found her. Who is next?"

The buzz sounded out as the gate started to spin. Shiraike nervously approached the spokes, holding her thin arms close to her chest.

"Ms. Akenuma should go next since she's the same year."

Hiyori nodded at Hasegawa's suggestion, stepping up as Shiraike daintily moved with the gate.

"Makes sense. I'm Akenuma Hiyori of Umiman junior high, class of 2006."

The gate ceased movement before Hiyori finished her introduction. Shiraike lingered on the other side of the gate as the lady started perusing the book. The lady flipped only one sheet before nodding.

"Go on, Ms. Akenuma."

The buzz heralded the movement of the gate. Hiyori promptly darted to the moving spokes, crossing to the other side in seconds. The gate stopped as the lady turned her gaze upon Hasegawa.

"And you are?"

"Hasegawa Kasumi. Umiman junior high, class of 2005."

The woman ignored Hasegawa's polite bow, turning a sheet before turning another. She moved her finger upon the sheet before coming to a stop.

"Next."

The lady pushed the button, causing the gate to spin slowly. Hasegawa pranced over to the moving spokes as Kurumu nervously approached the counter with Tarumi.

"I didn't go to school in Umiman. Will that be a problem?"

The woman glanced over Kurumu with ochre eyes.

"If you're from Kuminagawa, I just need to see your pass."

"I'm a student at Yokai Academy."

The lady frowned, glancing at Tarumi.

"Are you also from Yokai Academy?"

"Yes, Ma'am. But I graduated from Umiman junior high."

"Name and year."

"Watakoma Tarumi, class of 2005. You'll let her through, right?"

The lady glanced down at her book, moving her finger about the sheet.

"We shall see, Ms. Watakoma. Join your friends."

The buzz declared the motion of the gate. Tarumi favored Kurumu an uncertain smile as she let go of Kurumu's arm. Kurumu mirrored the smile as the undine slipped between the rows of moving spokes. The other girls frowned as Tarumi joined them.

"Is there a problem with Ms. Kurono?"

"I have no idea."

"Okay, young lady. This must be your first time to Ikinakawa."

Kurumu nodded, glancing away from her concerned companions.

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Do you have some form of identification on you?"

Kurumu paused a moment, her head still throbbing. She gasped slightly, reaching for her purse. Quickly unzipping it, she fumbled about the few contents. Grinning, she pulled out her black passport.

"I have my passport."

"Slide it through the glass."

Kurumu nodded, pushing her passport through the slit between the glass and the counter. The woman snatched it up with her long, slender fingers. She opened the black booklet, scanning it over.

"Kurono Kurumu. You can have this back. You'll also need this."

The lady snatched up a white pamphlet, pushing it and Kurumu's passport across the counter. Kurumu promptly put her passport back in her purse before picking up the other item. The top sheet had the graphic of a sun over a lake with the phrase 'Welcome to Ikinakawa' at the bottom.

"What is this?"

"Basic guidelines for guests to our village. Be sure to read through it."

Kurumu flipped open the brochure but the buzzing sound demanded her attention. Flashing the lady a gracious smile, she hopped over to the spokes. It was sort of like an automated revolving door. The other girls grinned once she was through.

"I didn't know you had a passport."

Kurumu giggled at Tarumi, taking a moment to zip up her purse.

"I haven't had it that long. Compliments of belonging to the Shuzen Estate."

The space she had entered was easily twice the size of the former room. To the left of her was a woman with flowing pistachio curls in Fairy Tale garb. She stood at a concierge in front of a gap in the wall. She appeared to be the only person in this barren room. Double glass doors in the center of the wall before them appeared to be the only way out of this chamber.

"First stop is the convenience store."

After making that declaration, Hasegawa grabbed Shiraike by the hand and started walking towards the glass doors. The other girls were quick to follow.

"They gave you a brochure?"

Kurumu giggled at Tarumi's observation. She nodded, opening the pamphlet back up. The back side of the flap with the graphic had a brief history which mentioned that Elder Kamekami she had just heard about last night. She glanced at the other sheet which listed some of the rules.

"No pictures?"

Ranryuu arrived at the door first, pushing the door open. She regarded Kurumu as the younger girls stepped out into the bright sunlight.

"They have a rule against that?"

Kurumu shrugged, walking out with Tarumi at her side.

"Apparently so."

The sudden fresh air made Kurumu feel lightheaded. She managed only a couple steps out into the open before pausing. Closing her eyes, she enjoyed the warmth surrounding her.

"It's too bright."

Hasegawa giggled at Shiraike's protest.

"The convenience store is right there."

Kurumu sucked in a deep breath, opening her eyes. Those two were making their way across a dirt road. On the other side was a white brick building with a black tiled roof. Glass double doors were placed in the center of a row of tall glass windows held in silver framing. Shelves of goods were visible from the street. A tall man with short, dark green hair stood at a wraparound counter flanking the entrance.

"Come on, Kurumu."

Kurumu smiled at Tarumi's prompting. Clutching the brochure to her bosom, she followed on the heels of Ranryuu and Tarumi. She could smell the forest behind the convenience store. Mixed in with that scent was the familiar odor of the ocean.

"Are we by the ocean?"

"The village is built around a saltwater lake."

Kurumu nodded, glancing to the left as she crossed the narrow dirt road. The trail vanished into the thick of the forest. Looking in the other direction, Kurumu noticed the road widened out into a parking lot. Rows of vehicles lined the dirt road which continued on to a shimmering view. Kurumu immediately knew that was Ikinakawa's connection to the real world.

"Are you coming inside?"

Kurumu smiled at Ranryuu whom was holding the door to the convenience store open. Not wanting to prolong Ranryuu's kindness, Kurumu hurried to enter the convenience store. The other three were already perusing the shelves as Kurumu drifted over to Tarumi's side. She glanced back and favored Ranryuu a smile when the girl let the door close behind her.

"What was that other woman in the jump station doing?"

"You mean the curly haired one we saw on the way out? She talks to the people leaving Ikinakawa."

Kurumu nodded at Ranryuu's explanation. She opened up her brochure again, glancing over the rules. She smirked, realizing that no public nudity was included in the list.

"Guess you would need a swimsuit if you wanted to swim here."

"Mhm. Thankfully all of the homes here are above ground. The lake is mostly for recreational use."

Hasegawa walked purposefully with a yellow plastic bottle in one hand and Shiraike's hand in the other. The girl passed by them, stopping at the counter.

"We only need this."

The man by the register nodded, taking the bottle from Hasegawa.

"Six hundred yen."

Letting go of Shiraike's hand, Hasegawa fished in the hem of her skirt to pull out a black pouch. She loosened the strings, tugging out a wad of yen. Taking the yen, the clerk pushed some buttons on the register which slid the drawer out. He quickly gave Hasegawa her change.

"Thank you for your patronage."

Hasegawa nodded, handing Shiraike the bottle before stuffing her yen back in the pouch. Pulling the strings taut, she wiggled the pouch back inside the hem of her skirt.

"Are you getting something, Hiyori?"

Hiyori huffed at Tarumi, strolling towards them.

"I don't have any money."

"Can I put the sunscreen on now?"

"We should do that outside."

As the others started for the door, Kurumu took a cursory glance about the place. It had snacks and refrigerated carts for chilled drinks and foods. It even had a rack display with batteries. One shelf had writing utensils and paper while another had toiletries and hygiene products.

"Ms. Kurono?"

Kurumu smiled at Ranryuu's prompting. She sauntered through the open door, allowing the graduate to let the door close again. Shiraike had already opened the bottle and was generously applying the white cream to her face and neck. Kurumu gestured at the graduate.

"It looked like that convenience store had as much stuff as the commissaries at Yokai Academy."

"I've never considered our commissaries as having much of a selection either."

"What kind of convenience stores are you comparing it to?"

"The ones in Kuminagawa and Shizukana. I was surprised that Mononoke didn't have one."

Kurumu perked up, knowing the answer to this.

"It used to but it closed down after the town's big fire. It was ran by the Ito family but a former manager bought the place and turned it into the Sinkhole."

"That makes sense. It did feel like a grocery store."

"I still haven't tried out that miniature golf place. Is it any fun?"

Kurumu grinned at Tarumi.

"Mhm. You should give it a try."

"It was okay but not something you could do every weekend."

Kurumu shrugged at Ranryuu's comment.

"You could say the same thing about bowling, billiards and roller skating. Karaoke is probably the only activity I wouldn't mind doing every weekend."

"That and watching movies. Assuming there is something new to watch every weekend."

"I hope they open up that community pool the mermaids were using. That would be fun."

Kurumu chuckled at Tarumi's sentiment.

"I think that is up to the town elders."

"Do you think I have enough on?"

Kurumu faltered back a step when she saw Shiraike. The girl looked like she was wearing a face mask. Hiyori snickered, taking the bottle from her classmate.

"Any more lubricant and you'd slip out of existence."

Hasegawa giggled, taking Shiraike by the hand.

"Are we going to Ms. Kurotaki's home first?"

"May as well. Follow me!"

Tarumi trotted off, following the dirt road to the edge of the forest. Kurumu fell in step behind Hasegawa and Shiraike. Ranryuu lingered a few steps behind Kurumu while Hiyori remained at her side.

"Are you really that popular at Yokai Academy?"

Kurumu smiled at Hiyori as they steadily drew closer to the edge of the forest.

"I actually took second place in a popularity poll that the school held back in July."

"Your school had a popularity contest?"

Ranryuu giggled at Hiyori's dubious look.

"They did. Three undines made it to the finals. Ms. Okimune, Ms. Mizudake and Ms. Taniguchi."

"Really? What about Mr. Shiname?"

"He wasn't in the top five of the second year guys so he didn't make it into the finals."

Hiyori faltered a step. She regarded Ranryuu with disbelief.

"No way. What about Mr. Kawakuchi?"

"His homeroom picked the captains of the basketball and soccer teams to participate in the contest."

"That's crazy. Those two were way more popular than Taniguchi."

Ranryuu giggled as they sauntered into the shade of the trees.

"Well the boys were in a different category than the girls."

Kurumu shivered when the warmth of the sun was hindered, though this chill was nothing compared to Aranami or Umiman. The trees quickly crowded in, becoming too dense to see far into the forest.

"Do other races not find undine men attractive?"

"We all wear human forms in high school, Ms. Akenuma. I wouldn't say they are at a disadvantage."

Kurumu chuckled at Ranryuu's response.

"Nijiro did have a feminine look about him when he had longer hair. But I think having Miyamoto and Kyuushutsu in his class factored more into why he didn't get nominated for the contest."

"Are those two more attractive?"

Kurumu snorted, thinking about Miyamoto Haiji. The guy was buff and had a rustic charm about him but she would never classify him as attractive. He was just a lovable idiot.

"I think other students knew Miyamoto better. Nijiro wasn't trying to stand out so it makes sense that he would lose to him. As for Kyuushutsu…"

Kurumu paused to think of something nice to say about the guy.

"I don't want to say he cheated but he's an incubus. His charm over the girls had enough sway to get him into the finals but he wasn't popular with guys or the first years."

Ranryuu giggled with a nod.

"Yea. When Asahi told me about his true form, I worried that she was being used. But it sounds like he genuinely cares for her. I just wish I could say the same about her."

"You don't think she loves him?"

"Asahi doesn't know what she wants. That makes it easy to simply go along with the whims of a guy whom seems to care. It's good that she's away from him so she can process how she really feels."

Kurumu mulled that over, seeing merit in that stance. It was not like Yukawa had talked very much about Kyuushutsu when she had visited the girl.

"Considering how quiet and withdrawn she is, I'm surprised she placed so high in the contest."

"Yukawa was a finalist?"

Kurumu laughed at Hiyori's shock.

"No. But she was in the top ten of the third year girls."

"Mhm. She placed right behind Ms. Odayakana. Though considering Ms. Chouda got into the finals, it was clear that the loli lovers swayed the votes in her favor."

Kurumu smirked, remembering that Tora had written an article that ousted the influence of the loli appreciation club on the contest.

"I wouldn't say that but they did spread her name around. I knew about Yukawa long before I met her."

"It's crazy to think Yukawa was popular."

Kurumu was about to protest when she noted the forest was thinning out. After a few more steps, they were greeted with a view of a massive lake with the distant blur of foliage on the far horizon. The dirt road veered left, descending to rows of single story structures. Some flanked the shore but most stood to the left of the road. The walls of every structure had a pale brown hue, reminding Kurumu of clay pottery. Most had thatched roofs, furthering the impression of a primitive village.

"Seems like Nagisa was only half joking about not knowing what a toilet was."

Hiyori snickered as they followed the others down the road.

"Of course we know what one is but most of us don't have one in our homes."

"That just makes me wonder about nasty things. Like I know that your homes have chutes to send trash down to the scavengers but how does that work with pee?"

"Nobody cares about pee."

"True but you'll get scolded if you don't crap in the chutes. Nobody wants to see a turd floating around."

Kurumu laughed, thankful she had never encountered that. She knew that there was a mild suction pulling the trash down the chutes so there was no need to ask more questions on this subject.

As they neared the settlement, Kurumu noticed a few residents milling about. They were in their human forms and were wearing human clothes. These clothes were single color garments. Most girls wore frocks similar to what Ranryuu had on while the guys were garbed in short sleeved tunics and shorts. Nobody was wearing long pants or more complex attire. Even buttoned up shirts were absent. Most of these villagers had on sandals but a few had simple shoes.

They passed by the first structures, confirming Kurumu's thoughts on the structure. A number had been carved into the dried clay next to the wood door. Openings were cut high up the walls, allowing in light and fresh air. It was like a window that was always left open.

"Does it ever rain in Ikinakawa?"

"You'd have to ask someone whom lives here."

Kurumu chuckled, supposing that was fair as they passed by more of these homes. Narrow paths cut between the structures, giving access to more of these homes. Seeing no street names, she wondered if the homes had simply been numbered like how it had been done in Aranami.

She turned to the left onto a narrow trail between the homes, following after the other girls. She walked between three more sets of homes before noting that Tarumi had moved to the door for the home on the right. The undine knocked as Hasegawa and Shiraike came to a stop behind her.

"Who is it?"

"It's me, Mami. Are your parents home?"

Kurumu arrived to stand with the others as the door swung out. A young girl stepped out, wearing a black frock with wide straps upon her pale shoulders. Her moss green hair was puffed out about her head like a cartoon character caught in an explosion. Standing as tall as Hiyori, she looked their group over with her silver eyes.

"Did you bring everyone with you?"

Hasegawa giggled, letting go of Shiraike's hand.

"Not everyone."

"Mom and dad are out at the lake with the brats. I'm watching the house for them."

"So you can't come out?"

The girl huffed, letting go of the door to cross her arms about a barely perceptible bosom.

"I'd invite you in but you brought a bunch of strangers."

"The tall girl in the dress is Ranryuu Miyoko. She graduated from Yokai Academy this year."

"Ranryuu? That name is familiar."

"She's a half breed from our community."

Kurotaki nodded at Hiyori's clarification.

"Right. Who is this girl with the big tits?"

All of the girls laughed as Kurumu blushed slightly.

"I'm Kurono Kurumu. I'm in the same grade as Tarumi."

"She's dating Manami's brother."

The girl's silver eyes widened.

"Is she from Umishiro?"

"No. Kurumu is only part undine. She's actually from a different prefecture. Tottori."

Kurotaki cocked her head with a frown at Tarumi's amused answer.

"Where is Tottori?"

"South. Like near Osaka."

That was not exactly true but Kurumu felt no need to correct Tarumi.

"Okay. I heard those Umishiro girls have big titties. Is swimming harder for you?"

Kurumu coughed out a laugh.

"I wouldn't know. I do more flying than swimming."

"Flying? Are you a monstrel?"

Kurumu smiled softly.

"I'm a succubus."

"Those are real?"

"You didn't tell me she was a succubus."

Hasegawa smiled apologetically at Shiraike.

"Well school policy discourages us from talking about true forms."

"Yea, Mami. You can't be asking people about their true forms."

The poofy haired girl flinched at Tarumi's reproach. She bowed her head to Kurumu.

"Sorry, Ms. Kurono."

She straightened up with a slight smile on her thin lips.

"I just assumed you were an undine and was startled to hear you weren't."

"Most people would think Manami's brother would date an undine. He was never one to break rules."

Kurotaki smiled at Hiyori.

"True. I'm Kurotaki Mami and I'll be a first year at your school soon. Please be kind to me."

Kurumu returned the nod.

"I will. I hear that you want to join the cheerleading squad."

Kurotaki's silver eyes lit up.

"That would be so cool. I've heard so many stories from Ms. Tanigawa about her experiences."

"You know you could also join the gymnastics club with Manami and me."

"But you didn't go anywhere. I want to visit other schools which the cheerleading squad does."

"Nabiki kind of regrets that though. Most likely she will get married into an underwater community and not see the light of day for decades."

Kurotaki huffed, jutting out her flat chest.

"That won't happen to me. If I marry, my husband better be living on the land."

"You could always marry a different race."

The girls all went silent at Kurumu's suggestion. Kurotaki glanced aside.

"Aren't we too ugly for other races?"

Kurumu flinched as Tarumi started to giggle nervously.

"Well there are people like Kurumu whom don't mind that."

Her heart twisted at the compliment. It actually did bother her. A lot.

"Well my parents would never be happy with that."

"No kidding. My mother would disown me."

Hasegawa laughed at Shiraike's sentiment.

"I wouldn't say that."

"She loves my little brothers more than me."

Hasegawa sighed, taking Shiraike by the hand. She smiled at Kurotaki.

"I'm sure that Umishiro and Ikinakawa aren't the only undine communities on land."

"That's what I'm saying. Going to junior high in Umiman was a pain in the ass. I don't know how you can stand living there."

Hiyori snorted, glancing aside.

"Umiman is a resort compared to Aranami."

"Well if you can't come with us today, can you come to my birthday party tomorrow?"

"Maybe. What do you have in mind?"

"Just a movie, karaoke and a meal in Umiman."

"I'll ask my parents. What time are you starting?"

"Probably around ten since it will take my parents a few hours to swim from Aranami."

Ranryuu pounded her fist into her palm, drawing everyone's attention.

"I should mention that you two will be on your own tomorrow. Father and I will be leaving first thing in the morning for Shizukana. We're spending the whole weekend with his extended family."

"I thought he was fine with us spending the weekend?"

"You and Ms. Kurono will be fine. Father will give you a spare key. We will be back Sunday night."

"Are the rest of you going to be at the party?"

Hasegawa shrugged at Kurotaki's query, glancing at Shiraike.

"Maybe. I doubt my parents will object."

"I should ask my mother."

"I'm coming."

Tarumi nodded at Hiyori's statement.

"Yea. Manami and Nijiro should also be there. I might invite Umidou."

"Her family is on vacation. They won't be back until next Thursday."

"Really? She never mentioned that."

Kurotaki huffed at Hiyori.

"You're not exactly her friend."

"She did mention going to Netsumi to visit her mother's family."

Hasegawa perked up at Shiraike's soft comment.

"Her mother is from a village off the coast of Nagasaki, right?"

Tarumi sighed dramatically when Shiraike nodded in response.

"I guess that's out."

"What about Nagisa?"

Tarumi laughed at Kurumu, shaking her head.

"I doubt she would want to go to my birthday party."

"She might if you invited one of her half breed friends."

Tarumi flinched at Hiyori's statement. She glanced at Kurumu, managing a smile.

"You wanted to visit Ayame, right? We could stop by her place."

"If you're going to do that, you could ask Fuyuki. She lives three doors away from Nurasume."

"I don't feel like inviting her. She's never been the sort to like movies and singing."

"Fair point. When was the last time you saw her?"

Tarumi paused with a contemplative look.

"Now that I think about it, I haven't seen her or Kawakami since junior high graduation."

Kurotaki smirked, leaning on her door.

"Well Shizuka is still about my height but Fuyuki is ten whole centimeters taller than last year."

"Ten?!"

"Yea. It was kind of strange considering she already had a growth spurt back in sixth grade."

"You never mentioned that."

Hiyori shrugged at Tarumi.

"Why should I care about Yoshikawa becoming as tall as the boys?"

"How tall is she now?"

"Wouldn't surprise me if she's one seventy."

Tarumi nodded with an astonished look.

"Damn. Maybe I should swing by then so I'm not as shocked when I see her on campus."

"You do that. It was nice meeting you, Ms. Kurono. Perhaps I will see you tomorrow."

Kurumu smiled, nodding slightly.

"Same to you."

Once the girl had closed the door, Tarumi started down the street.

"It's not too far to Yoshikawa's place."

Kurumu fell in step with Hiyori, following Tarumi down this aisle between the homes. They passed a half dozen homes before turning left towards the forest. They made their way to the very last row of homes before the tree line. Tarumi turned right again, passing by two more homes before coming to a stop. The undine promptly knocked on the door.

"I haven't seen any businesses. What do these people do for a living?"

Hiyori snorted at Kurumu's query, making a dismissive gesture.

"Half of them laze about town, doing whatever they feel like. Kind of like how things are in Aranami."

"I doubt it's that many."

Hiyori shrugged at Hasegawa.

"Who cares? There aren't that many working in the human world. You saw how small that parking lot was compared to how many houses are here."

"True but some have jobs with Fairy Tale."

"There can't be more than fifty people working at the jump station."

"But they might work in Umiman."

"Morning Mrs. Yoshikawa!"

Kurumu's attention was drawn to the open door. A woman with shiny obsidian locks which cascaded to her narrow shoulder was regarding Tarumi with hazel eyes. A dark blue sundress clung to her slender torso which was only slightly more endowed than these girls.

"I don't remember you."

"It's me. Watakoma Tarumi."

The woman's eyes did not show any recognition. She looked over the group and let out a soft laugh.

"Aka. What have you done to yourself?"

Shiraike frowned, touching the white cream plastered over her face.

"It's sunscreen."

"Silly girl. If you're here for Fuyuki, she isn't home."

"Is she out at the lake?"

The woman chuckled at Tarumi, shaking her head.

"No. She's with Shizuka getting tennis lessons from Yuri."

"Mizudake has a tennis court?"

Mrs. Yoshikawa smiled at Kurumu.

"No. They are at Yuri's training camp which is probably just some silly name that girl made up for one of the many clearings in the woods. From what I gather, it's just hitting a ball with a paddle over a net."

"It isn't ping pong."

Mrs. Yoshikawa shrugged at Tarumi.

"It's all the same to me. I don't know exactly where this training camp of theirs is so I can't help you. Fuyuki has been coming home late for dinner so I wouldn't recommend waiting here for her."

"That's okay. I was just wanting to see her since Mami told me about her getting taller."

"Heavens forbid that girl gets any taller. She's almost as tall as her father now."

Tarumi giggled, gesturing off to the right.

"Well we're going to go visit Nurasume now. If Fuyuki does come home, you can send her our way."

"I'll be sure to do that. Have a good day, girls."

They all gave a generic response as the mother closed the door. Tarumi started off, prompting them all to follow. They passed by two doors before coming to a stop at the third. Tarumi grinned, knocking firmly. She glanced back at them, gesturing off in the distance.

"Mr. Nurasume works in Joetsu so I already know he won't be home."

"Yea. I've never actually spoken to him."

Hiyori shrugged at Hasegawa's confession.

"He's a human. Probably best not to."

"Do people avoid her father?"

Tarumi hummed in contemplation before knocking a second time.

"Don't really know. I can't say that I've spoken to him beyond initial introductions."

"That's more than me."

The girls shared a giggle before the door suddenly pushed out. A young guy leaned on the door, sporting a black shirt with the graphic of a scrawny kid wearing a straw hat. One Piece was scrawled across his belly near the feet of the character. Black cotton shorts failed to reach his knees.

"When did my sister get so popular?"

Tarumi snickered at the nasal toned question. This kid had short, black locks and bright strawberry eyes.

"Is your sister home?"

"Yea. She's with Ms. Taniguchi."

Kurumu shuddered when she caught his attention. His eyes widened as a familiar surge of innocent lust caressed Kurumu's core. She smiled, glancing aside.

"You're the most gorgeous girl I've ever seen."

Tarumi huffed, putting her hands on her hips.

"Hey. You were in junior high with most of us."

"And your point?"

Hasegawa giggled as Tarumi pouted. She pointed at the young man.

"That is Nurasume Junpei. He's a year behind Aka."

"Ayame mentioned having a little brother but I thought he was much younger."

"Well he is a March baby so he barely was old enough to go to school with us."

"Would someone care to introduce this perfect vision of beauty?"

Several girls giggled as Kurumu blushed. Tarumi twirled her wrist to present her in a grandiose fashion.

"This fair creature is Kurono Kurumu. She goes to Yokai Academy with me."

"She's dating Mr. Amesuki."

Junpei frowned at Hiyori's addition, backing up a half step.

"Amesuki? Don't you have a friend by that name?"

"Yes, dummy. Kurumu is dating Manami's older brother."

"Why are you dating a bottom dweller?"

Tarumi gasped, stepping in to swat his slim chest with the back of her hand.

"There is nothing wrong with Manami's brother."

"Your village makes mine look like an advanced civilization."

"You've never been to Aranami."

"I've been down to the bottom of Umiman and I hear that's nice compared to your shithole."

Hiyori sighed theatrically.

"I won't argue with that. My father acts like I'm crazy for not wanting to stay there."

"I don't mind living underwater. The sun is too hot and bright."

Junpei frowned at Shiraike, cocking his head.

"Shiraike? What happened to your face?"

"It's sunscreen."

The boy let out a curt laugh, backing further away.

"Well my mom is busy with her folks. Do you want to come inside?"

"I thought you would never ask!"

Hasegawa giggled at Shiraike's exasperated response. Taking her friend by the hand, the pair were first to cross the threshold of the home. Tarumi was next and Hiyori gestured for Kurumu to go ahead. Nodding her thanks, Kurumu stepped out of the sunlight.

The room beyond was chilly with light filtering in from the exterior slits. The floor was compacted dirt, reminding Kurumu of the log cabin her mother had lived in for a short time. A simple wood table with four wood chairs was set off to the left. It was the only furniture in the room but that was more than what Kurumu had seen in Aranami. It looked like some wood counters and cabinets were built along the far wall. Two doors were between the end of the counter and the wall to her right. This wall on the right had a third door half way into this room.

"I forgot to ask the other residents but does it rain in Ikinakawa?"

Junpei chuckled, closing the door behind Ranryuu.

"Of course it does."

"Wouldn't that be bad for your homes?"

"No. The roofs seldom leak and even if they did, a majority of residents here are undines. Controlling water is about the only thing they are good at."

"You're an undine too."

Junpei huffed at Tarumi, strolling by them. He stopped at the door closest to the counter end.

"Only because Mom had her parents plead my case. I have the same issue as Ayame. It would be a huge hassle for either of us to live underwater."

"Who is here?"

The other door along that wall swung in and a familiar face peered around the opening. Numasaki Ayame was garbed in a cerulean sundress. Her wavy hair fell beyond her shoulders to tickle the slight swell of her bosom and was the same dark green hue as a watermelon. She had the same strawberry colored eyes as her brother.

"Kurono?"

Kurumu giggled, offering a slight wave.

"Hello. I heard Nagisa is here."

"I'm not if your lady is with you."

Kurumu laughed at Nagisa's prompt response.

"Kokoa is in Iromori right now."

"In that case I'm here."

Kurumu smirked, sauntering across the room. The brother smiled, pushing open the other door.

"My room is here, Ms. Kurono."

Ayame snorted, stepping out of her room. She and her brother were both wearing sandals though that made sense considering it was a dirt floor. Kurumu had no intentions of taking her loafers off.

"Why would she want to see your room?"

"Because it will be too crowded in yours."

"The only thing in your room is manga and your futon."

"It's not like you have anything in your room."

Ayame beckoned to them, retreating into her room.

"Come in here, ladies. You don't need to endure his sexual harassment."

"I haven't done anything!"

Kurumu giggled, entering Ayame's room first. She immediately spied Nagisa, sitting on a futon which had a black mat beneath it. Nagisa was sporting a carnation pink sundress which was too loose in her seated posture. It was obvious the girl was not wearing a bra. Now that Kurumu thought about it, it had not seemed like any of the women in Ikinakawa were wearing bras. Ayame certainly was not.

"Morning, Ms. Kurono. I take it that your boyfriend isn't with you."

Kurumu smirked, drifting closer to the undine. Nagisa had most of her toffee colored tresses pulled back in a ponytail while some was braided to the side near her ears. The girl glanced up with amusement in her creamy eyes. A pair of black buds were nestled in her ears which were connected by a wire to a CD player in the girl's lap.

"He isn't. What are you doing at Ayame's place?"

Nagisa glanced aside as the other girls arrived.

"Nothing much. What did you do to your face, Ms. Shiraike?"

"It's sunscreen."

"That makes me tempted to force you to stay outside."

"But my skin is delicate."

Nagisa sighed, making a halfhearted gesture.

"Well this is Ikinakawa, Ms. Kurono. Very rustic. We have wardrobes because most homes were built without closets. One of the many shortcomings of our town."

Kurumu glanced in the direction Nagisa pointed, noting the wood furniture in the corner of the room.

"I saw a table but no kitchen."

Ayame giggled, pointing through the door.

"There is a smokeless oven beneath the floor for cooking in the main room. Works with charcoal."

Nagisa smirked, reaching off to the side. She picked up a shiny metal bowl, presenting it to Kurumu.

"And this is our indoor plumbing. Ayame is lucky to live on the edge of town. Some people have to carry their waste pretty fair to dispose of it."

Kurumu grimaced, making a shooing gesture.

"I didn't need to see that."

Nagisa snickered, putting the bedpan back in the corner. She let out a sigh.

"I miss being at school."

Kurumu smiled, sharing that sentiment.

"And that is the statue of our founder."

The lanky youth gestured to a stone edifice erected in the center of the town square. The statue was carved into the shape of the true form of an undine. A majestic crest topped the round head of the large eyed effigy. A toga was draped over the statue's torso, baring one nipple proudly. In one webbed hand was a dignified trident while the other was held out with talons beckoning. At the base of the broad legs was a circular fountain. Small fish ringed the perimeter, spitting streams of water at the statue's feet.

The town square was surrounded by the most impressive set of structures this town had to offer which had all been built in the early sixties. The sprawling building to her left had a series of open archways facing the square. Lights held by cords suspended from its curved, stone roof illuminated the rows and racks of clothing on display. A few residents milled within the clothing store, checking out the wares.

The structure on her right had fluted columns lining the front face. The arched lintel over the central door had carved characters which identified the building as the town hall. While this was where town meetings were held, it was also where the residents picked up their mail. The dirt road which had ran from the jump station through the woods ended at the town square beside the town hall.

Kurumu flinched with a pair of hands touched her shoulders from behind. She glanced over her shoulder, smirking at the giggling girl. A few steps behind Tarumi was the rest of their group. Hasegawa was still holding Shiraike's hand while Hiyori lingered beside them. Junpei was failing to impress Ranryuu with his Naruto knowledge while his sister stuck close to Nagisa and their other friend.

Doronuma Kiriko was a tall girl with her ebony locks styled in a boyish fashion. She had sapphire eyes which matched the rich blue frock covering her slender body. The singer of the music club had easily been convinced to tag along after they had enjoyed a lunch prepared by Mrs. Doronuma. Kurumu could still taste the smoked fish and sweet cakes the mother had made.

The youth beside Kurumu was Shin, Kiriko's little brother. Not that he could be called little, towering over the rest of their group. He had admitted to being a centimeter shy of one eighty, making him taller than Ginei. He had short, ebony locks with his bangs hiding his right eye which was a sapphire hue. The tunic wrapped about his frail torso was a soft gray while his black shorts bared much of his pale thighs.

"So what are these other buildings?"

Shin pointed to the sprawling structure on the other side of the dirt road near the town hall. Like the town hall, it had a flat roof and fluted columns. Both structures had arched openings cut high into the walls to let light and air inside. It was not identical but shared the same style.

"That is the primary school."

Kurumu had not expected that fancy building to be a school. She had seen it mentioned in the short history section of the brochure that the old school had been closed for a new centralized one.

"Is it just one classroom a grade level?"

Tarumi giggled, jostling her side.

"Of course it is. Ikinakawa isn't much bigger than Aranami."

"Our school is better. We have books."

Tarumi pouted at the tall boy.

"We do learn how to write."

"I should learn how to play the guitar."

Kurumu smiled at his random remark. Both he and his sister had as many CDs as Nagisa. Despite his love for music, he had listed the computer program as his first choice with band and choir being his other two elective options. He had no desire to join band.

"You could join the music club."

"I don't want to be in my sister's silly club. I'd rather try out your broadcasting club."

Tarumi wagged her finger at the boy as Kurumu felt his passing interest in her body.

"She has a boyfriend, kiddo."

"And his parents are opposed to this. Undines never get parental blessings to marry half breeds."

The boy was speaking from experience. Both of his parents came from Umiman. His father was a kappa while his mother was an undine. They had been friends since the first grade. On the day of their junior high graduation, Mr. Doronuma had confessed his love and begged his future wife to wait for him since he was going to Yokai Academy. After his graduation in 86, he joined Fairy Tale and asked her parents for permission to marry. When that failed, they decided to elope. To minimize contact with her family, Mr. Doronuma had himself reassigned to the Watasora office which was an hour long drive from Ikinakawa. As rough as that sounded, it was less time than Mr. Watakoma's daily commute.

"I'm sure that your parents will be more understanding."

He smiled at Kurumu, filling her up with delicious lechery.

"Which is why you should date me instead."

Kurumu sighed as Tarumi nudged her.

"You are too popular with young boys. I'll need to keep my brother away from you."

"Your brother is only twelve."

Shin chuckled, gesturing to the other building near the clothing store. This one had a curved, tiled roof and a torii gate before a huge opening flanked by smooth pillars.

"That is the shrine while this last place is Elder Magarikawa's furniture shop. He has a few things out on display but most of the time his family makes stuff to order."

Kurumu regarded the last building on the other side of the shrine. It looked to be the same style as the clothing store which was ran by Elder Tobide's family. Those two elders were part of the town council which included Elder Kamekami and Lady Umihaba. Her eyes turned back to the statue.

"I can't imagine anyone having a statue built of themselves while they are still alive."

Shin shrugged, pointing beyond the effigy.

"He's a proud man. That path continues on to the beach if you want to go swimming."

"You just want to see her swimsuit."

"I do."

Kurumu smirked at his bluntness. She was mildly tempted to give in.

"Ms. Kurono. We're going to step inside the clothing shop for a bit."

Hiyori nodded at Hasegawa's declaration.

"Yea. Aka is melting."

Kurumu giggled, waving as the trio started off.

"What do you want to do?"

Kurumu's eyes shifted to Nagisa whom closed in with her two friends. She shrugged nonchalantly.

"It's your town. I have no idea what options I have other than swim in the lake."

"We do have a bait and tackle shop if you want to try fishing the human way."

Ayame laughed at Nagisa's suggestion.

"Are you trying to bore her to death?"

"I'm surprised you didn't mention the game shop first."

Nagisa paused at Kiriko's remark.

"That's different. You can rent things at the tackle shop."

"What's the game shop?"

"It's a hobby shop. You can buy stuff like marbles, kendamas and playing cards."

"Sounds like Mr. Umiyuri's novelty shop."

Kiriko smirked at Kurumu.

"I doubt his shop has frisbees and volleyballs."

"The town has some nets set up on the beach if you want to play a game."

Ayame huffed at Shin's suggestion.

"If we want to do that we can swing by Chiharu's place."

"She doesn't have a volleyball court."

"I know that! I meant that we can get a ball for free."

Junpei chuckled, placing his hand on his sister's shoulder.

"Getting riled up by your crush again?"

"He is not my crush!"

Kurumu giggled along with the other girls as Ayame's face became flush.

"Is that Kurono?!"

The gasp startled Kurumu. She turned as a woman with two kids approached her. This lady had mint green curls which brushed her narrow shoulders. Her hazel eyes were wide with shock. A teal frock hung from her shoulders, falling just below her knees.

"You are correct, Ma'am. This is Kurono Kurumu."

The lady nodded dumbly at Tarumi's introduction. In one hand was a simple white sack. Her other held the hand of a little boy. His indigo tunic was so long that it hid his shorts, if he was wearing any. His short hair was black but he appeared to have the same hazel eyes. Trailing behind the woman was a little girl. Her mint hair was pulled up in pigtails. A pink frock almost touched her tiny feet clad in sandals

"With all the fish in the sea. Do you know an Ageha?"

Kurumu's heart skipped as the woman came to a stop beside Kiriko.

"Yes. She is my mother."

"Really? How old are you?"

Kurumu swallowed thickly, wondering if this was her mother's classmate.

"Sixteen."

The lady let out a short, breathy laugh.

"So she had a kid with him after all. How is she?"

Kurumu bit her lip, knowing she should stick to the official script.

"She passed away recently. Car accident."

"Yea. Like early October."

The woman's eyes filled with regret.

"I'm so sorry to hear that. She was such a pretty girl. Always quiet in my class."

"Were you her classmate?"

The lady laughed with a shake of her head.

"If only I were that young. I am Natsuame Hikari. Though when I knew your mother, my surname was Utakawa. She was in my math class her final year of school."

Kurumu gasped, realizing her mistake.

"I didn't think you would be her teacher."

"We do age rather gracefully. I was teaching math at Yokai Academy for thirty six years."

"These are your kids?"

The lady smiled, motioning for the girl to step forward.

"Yes. Kaede and Minato. Say hello."

Both kids greeted Kurumu in unison, causing the older girls to giggle. Kurumu's heart swelled up, having so many questions.

"Did you know much about my mother?"

Mrs. Natsuame gave her an apologetic smile.

"Ageha was very poor at math. I did offer assistance but she preferred turning to Megumi for help."

Kurumu smiled at the remark.

"Ms. Yumeito is a teacher at Yokai Academy now."

"Oh, I'm aware of that. I retired in 2000, Ms. Kurono. Seeing my students become fellow teachers and mothers eventually convinced me that I should settle down. I'm thankful for Ms. Umihaba finding me a suitable partner, considering how old I am."

"How old are you?"

The lady clucked her tongue at Tarumi's query.

"You should know better than to ask a woman her age."

"Well you at least have to be in your sixties if you've been teaching thirty six years."

Mrs. Natsuame sighed dramatically at Tarumi's persistence.

"I'll be sixty nine this summer."

"She's older than daddy."

Kurumu smirked at the little girl's comment which caused her friends to giggle.

"I'm glad that you started a family."

"My baby making days are already over. Spent two whole weeks in the Watasora hospital after having Minato. Don't you girls wait for your sixties to have your babies as it is hard on your body."

Kurumu giggled as the older girls sounded their understanding.

"So you've met Ms. Umihaba?"

"I have. She was my homeroom teacher the year she retired. I was inspired by her to graduate and get my teaching certificate from the humans. I started out as a primary school teacher here in my hometown back in 1960. It was by her recommendation, that I was hired in 64 to replace Mrs. Sumitomo."

Kurumu grinned at the mention of the old housemother residing in Baratoge, the first year girls' dorm.

"Ms. Umihaba sounds like a very interesting person."

"She's a sweet old lady whom regrets not having children of her own. I know that's why she helped me."

"Did your husband come from a different community?"

Mrs. Natsuame laughed at Tarumi's question.

"No. Actually his parents moved here during my high school years so in many ways he is a native. It was just that our paths never crossed. He was done with primary school when I started my teaching career."

"So he's not that much younger than you."

"I'm sure that you girls would think a seven year difference is huge at your age."

Tarumi jabbed Kurumu in the side.

"See. You are after my brother."

"Oh shush. I'm perfectly happy with Nijiro."

The lady giggled, adjusting the bag in her arm.

"Well I have already finished my shopping for the day. These kids grow out of clothes too fast."

Kiriko snorted, pointing at her brother.

"Yea. That boy needs to stop growing."

"I can't help that."

Everyone shared a laugh as the woman grabbed hold of her daughter.

"It was a pleasure meeting you, Ms. Kurono. I hope you have a lovely day."

Kurumu echoed that sentiment, smiling as the woman departed with her children. She breathed in deep, glancing at the statue.

"I'm up for checking out this beach."

"I'll stay here and tell the other girls where you went to."

Kurumu nodded at Ranryuu's offer, heading off on a course around the fountain. Tarumi skipped to keep in step with her as Shin leisurely matched their pace. Nagisa, Kiriko and the Nurasume siblings trailed in their wake. The tinkling sounds of the fountain nagged at Kurumu as they passed it by.

"With how much control undines have over water, why don't you have indoor plumbing?"

"I'll sum it up in one word. Laziness."

Junpei laughed at Shin's declaration.

"It would take a monumental effort at this point. Every house would have to be renovated."

"Don't you have new residents?"

"Not very often."

Kurumu frowned as they started down a narrow trail leading away from the town square.

"But you could build new homes with indoor plumbing."

"We probably lose residents as quickly as we gain them."

"Yea. I think our town population peaked back in the early eighties."

Shin nodded at Ayame's comment.

"Because of the jump station connecting us to Umiman. It wouldn't surprise me if we've been losing population this last decade."

"I don't know if that's true but we aren't growing enough to be building new homes."

"Your uncle probably knows more about this."

"I don't ask my uncle about stuff like that."

Kurumu giggled at the exchange between Nagisa and Ayame. She saw the dirt beach up ahead. To the left was that hobby shop they had told her about. The wall facing the street was mostly open, giving her a clear view of the many things the place had to sell. It even had dolls and baseball gloves.

This last building before the start of the dirt beach was the bait and tackle shop. The black haired man working behind the counter was so bored that he hardly registered her passing like most guys would.

Kurumu breathed in deep, tasting the salt in the air. She slowed her step, noting that the water did have a subtle ebb and flow to it. It was not like the waves of the ocean but still peaceful and calming.

Several people were gathered about this long stretch of beach in both directions. Some were dressed in plain clothes but more had donned swim attire. Most one piece suits were completely open backed unlike Kurumu's. That was probably to not cause trouble with the fin running down an undine's spine. More ladies preferred the simplicity of string bikini tops. The men were thankfully sporting loose swim trunks. Kurumu had seen far too many men in speedos this week with no desire to see another one.

"The nets are over there."

Shin pointed to the right where several posts had been secured in the dirt. Between each pair of posts was a white net. All three were currently in use by bikini clad girls and guys with slender, hairless chests.

"Would any of you oppose to just lying on the beach in swimsuits?"

"I didn't bring my swimsuit."

Shin smirked at Tarumi.

"Nobody wants to see you in a swimsuit."

"Hey! I'm just as much a woman as Kurumu!"

"I don't have a swimsuit either."

"Or anything at all beneath that dress."

Ayame nudged Nagisa, drawing the cerulean strap aside to reveal the black string of her bikini top.

"We don't have towels. And unless we get an umbrella, Ms. Shiraike would object."

Nagisa nodded at Kiriko's contributions.

"That's true. We could pick that all up at Chiharu's place."

"You act like you don't have those things yourself."

Nagisa shrugged at Ayame, holding her CD player against her bosom.

"I'm not going home until I have to. And I bet Chiharu is bored to tears."

Kurumu was curious how Umiyama was doing but shivered from a sudden surge of desire assaulting her core. She turned slightly to look in the direction of the source, spying a young boy with a bowl cut and black trunks. He was accompanied by two men in black tunics with wooden swords tied to a sash about their waists. The scrawny kid said something to the pair before the trio started making their way over.

"Whom is that?"

Tarumi turned about and grimaced.

"That's Hibiki. He's a spoiled brat."

"Yea. He's the same age as my brother."

Kiriko snorted at Ayame's remark.

"Actually a few months older. He's closer to Shin's age.

Nagisa chuckled, stalking over to place a hand on Kurumu's shoulder.

"Hibiki is Elder Kamekami's great grandson. Did you catch his attention?"

"Apparently so. He's coming straight at us."

As this Hibiki closed the gap between them, Kurumu realized he was short. It was possible that he was even shorter than she was. The two guys escorting him both had crew cuts. One had dark hair while the other's locks were a powder blue. The dark haired one had dark eyes and was wider in girth. The fair one had pale green eyes and stood half a head taller than his colleague.

"Ms. Taniguchi. Whom is this fine specimen beside you?"

Nagisa snickered, offering a bow of deference.

"Kurono Kurumu. She attends Yokai Academy with me."

The young boy stopped with his guards following his example. He crossed his frail arms about a smooth chest that suited a young child. It was hard to believe this kid was the same age as the other guys.

"You are very attractive, Ms. Kurono. My parents shall contact yours for the intent of marriage."

Kurumu laughed out loud as the other girls giggled. The boy with his eyes hidden beneath that mop of dark green hair scowled.

"This is no joke, Ms. Kurono. You're a much better woman for me than these minnows."

Nagisa sighed, clutching her CD player against her bosom.

"Sadly Ms. Kurono is not a full blooded undine. Your parents would never approve."

Kurumu's new admirer staggered back.

"That can't be! How could I ever be attracted to an undine woman now that I have seen you?"

"Well there are always the girls in Umishiro."

The boy clutched his fist, ignoring Nagisa's halfhearted remark.

"Such an obstacle so early in our relationship. But I know that we can make this work. I am a pure blood undine, several generations strong."

"She's dating Manami's brother."

He held both his hands out to Kurumu with his mint eyes sparkling through the gaps of his bangs.

"I'm sure that if I pump you full of my essence, you'll birth beautiful undines!"

Kurumu was at a loss for words. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment as the young suitor wept in joy.

"You need to dial back your charm a bit before you enrapture every underage boy in town."

Kurumu whirled on Nagisa, poking the girl in the shoulder.

"I didn't do anything!"

"So you say."

Kurumu cut off her response as she felt a surge of interest from other men witnessing this debacle. But it was not the lust that made her silent. Mixed in with the flow of desire was a malevolent presence.

"I'm going to go check on Hasegawa and the others. Could you clear up this misunderstanding?"

Nagisa favored her an amused look.

"Running away?"

"Yes. I'll be back in a moment."

Kurumu hurried back up the dirt trail, passing by the bait and tackle shop. She could feel the source of animosity giving pursuit. Resisting the urge to look over her shoulder, she walked quickly.

She had no idea why someone was wishing harm upon her. Perhaps it was an admirer of that Kamekami brat. Or maybe one of the other boys. It might even be a parent. Whatever the case, it would be best to confront this adversary and straighten things out. And since this entity wanted to harm her, picking a spot where she would be alone would flush them out. Her friends would regard this as dangerous but they did not understand her powers as a succubus.

Arriving back in the town square, Kurumu glanced about. She saw no signs of Hasegawa or Ranryuu. Her eyes drifted to the left, noting the double door entrance to the school. She would be surprised if it was locked up, considering it had many large openings that anyone could crawl through if they really wanted in. She sauntered over to the door, grabbing the handle and tugging back. It swung freely on its hinges.

Ducking inside, Kurumu breathed in the cooler air. To her right were the doors for the office and meeting room. On the left were the double doors for the cafeteria. Kurumu kept moving forward, taking the hall which grew darker with every step removed from the exterior.

The first door on her right was for first grade with the next being for second. The next double door on her left was for the library. Moving deeper into the school she passed by the doors for third and fourth grade while the next double doors on the left was for the music room. Noting that the hall only started to lighten up if she continued, Kurumu surmised that the fifth and sixth grade rooms were next.

Retreating back a few steps, she felt that malevolent presence once again. She avoided looking down the corridor, grabbing the handle of the music door and tugging it towards her. She slipped inside and was greeted by the light filtering in from the exterior wall.

Kurumu smiled, noting the room had a riser much like the one they had in choir. She sauntered over to a piano, sitting down on the bench. She rested her hands on the keys, recalling her conversation with Shin earlier. He had spent many hours figuring out how to play this.

Her awareness invaded the mind of the perpetrator lingering outside the door. This was not a jealous lover or a protective parent. This was the young man whom had tried to kill her twice in Aranami.

"Come on in, Takikawa Kazuhiko."

The door opened and the older son whom she had never met stalked inside. His turquoise locks were kept in a crew cut as he glared at her with peach hued eyes. The white tunic and black shorts he had on were from the local clothing shop. Recent purchases he had made before going to the beach to wait for her eventual arrival, knowing there was little else to do in Ikinakawa.

"I don't know how you managed to cheat death twice but you made a mistake."

Kurumu clucked her tongue, smothering his murderous urges with an unwarranted sense of victory.

"I'm part undine. I was lucky that first time and had a lot of help on the second attempt."

"You're not walking out of her alive, Kurono. You'll pay for what your friends did to me."

She cocked her head, regarding him. This idiot had agreed to take Mr. Akenuma's damage form to Fairy Tale. After turning in the form, he had stopped by the library to ask for her whereabouts.

"You've overextended yourself. People will figure out that you are a murderer."

He snarled, approaching her with contempt.

"All circumstantial evidence at best. Nobody will witness this."

Kurumu smirked, finding the crime that had warranted his expulsion.

"Like you argued in the case of Numata Gun."

The name of the kappa whom had outclassed Kazuhiko in academics caused the undine to scowl.

"So you did play a part in that!"

"You only joined Kuyo's PSC on the condition that Mr. Numata was disposed of."

"I had nothing to do with Numata's death!"

Kurumu stared directly into his eyes, reviewing the incident for herself.

"That's not what I'm seeing. The only thing Kuyo did was arrange for someone else to take the blame."

"You bitch!"

Kazuhiko lashed out at her but she had full control of his desires. His hand latched firmly on her breast, giving it a rough squeeze.

"I bet you like that!"

Kurumu whimpered, disliking the treatment. She placed her hand on his.

"You clearly don't have much experience with this."

The undine growled in fury, stepping in to grab her other tit with similar gusto. Kurumu grimaced as she endured several seconds of the worst fondling she had ever received.

"Why don't we make a deal? Turn yourself in and I will let you have what you want."

The young man scowled, withdrawing one hand.

"That's just stupid! Having sex with you isn't worth me getting executed!"

"I'm not talking about Numata. They've already decided not to punish you thanks to you being related to an elder of Aranami. I'm saying that you can admit to breaking Mr. Akenuma's hotel and messing up my oxygen tank. Those were accidents, right?"

Kazuhiko nodded slowly, reaching to the waistband of his shorts.

"I could do that."

He tugged his shorts down, exposing his desires. Kurumu hastily glanced aside.

"Hold up! We are not doing that before you talk with Fairy Tale."

He growled, thankfully putting his swollen member away.

"Fine! But you better keep your end of the bargain!"

Kurumu hoped her friends would not hold it against her for ditching them.

This had not turned out how she had expected.

Kurumu had been sitting in this small room for hours. After bringing Kazuhiko to the Fairy Tale office in Umiman for his confession, she had been taken aside and escorted to this room where she was to wait for Officer Kizunai. She had not realized that they had locked her up in here until after a few minutes had passed. That officer clearly was in no hurry to speak with her.

Her friends were probably freaking out by now. The last time she had checked her phone, it had already been after seven. At least they had left her with her belongings. She resisted the urge to turn her phone back on, doubting another hour had passed. For some reason her battery was ridiculously low despite not turning the silly thing on before today.

She was still confused as to why she was locked up. She had been so focused on controlling Kazuhiko that she had not perused the thoughts of the guards they had reported to. She had Kazuhiko admit to attempted murder and had only requested that they lock him up for the rest of her stay. It was not like she had demanded for his execution, considering he had already gotten away with murder once.

Kurumu sighed, lounging in this chair as she absently patted the table with her hands. This was dumb and frustrating. She really wished she had at least talked to her friends before coming back to Umiman. At least then they would know she was here. She hoped her absence had not ruined that dinner Mr. Ranryuu had promised them. She was sort of hungry.

The door clicked, declaring the lock had been removed. She looked at the door as it was pulled out. A dark haired man in Fairy Tale attire gestured inside. A familiar buxom woman stepped into view.

Ohno Yokina had wavy golden tresses and bright emerald eyes. Her generous curves were contained in a periwinkle blouse stretched to its limits. Her long sleeved, cream business jacket felt out of place for the cheerful succubus. Her hips were well defined in a clingy black skirt which stretched below her knees. She smiled with luscious lips, raising her hand in salutations.

"I'm here to rescue you."

"I didn't do anything wrong."

Ms. Ohno beckoned to her as Kurumu stood up.

"You forced a confession out of the wrong person. That boy is Kizunai's nephew."

Kurumu adjusted the strap of her purse as she stepped around the table.

"Is that Kizunai person important?"

"Only the man in charge of this office. Come on."

Kurumu pouted as Ms. Ohno draped an arm over her shoulder. She allowed the woman to steer her down the hallway. This agent of Fairy Tale was only slightly taller than Kurumu.

"This isn't fair. I'm the victim here."

"I know. Officer Kizunai wanted me to take you out of his city tonight but I had already reserved a room at the hotel for us. I'll take you to Mononoke tomorrow as promised."

Kurumu sighed as the guards opened a set of doors for them to walk into the main lobby. It sounded like she would not get to see Kuminagawa to add Ishikawa prefecture to her list.

"Do we have to leave right away? My friend's birthday is tomorrow."

Ms. Ohno chuckled as they made their way to the front door.

"I would like to be home tomorrow night. Let me at least enjoy one day off before I have to report to work at the prefectural office in Isogashi."

Kurumu grimaced when the woman withdrew her arm. Ms. Ohno pushed the main door open, allowing Kurumu to saunter out onto the central porch.

"I'm sorry that they called you to come pick me up."

Ms. Ohno chuckled, prancing out to join her as the door closed under its own weight.

"You should thank your Lady Kokoa. Mayu called me back on Monday saying that you would need to be rescued today. I had to leave work an hour early to get here before nine."

Kurumu whimpered at the revelation, glancing down the street lined with lampposts.

"Is it that late?"

"Yes, which is why Officer Kizunai was being unreasonable. The drive from Ikinakawa to Yokai Academy is two and a half hours and I don't have a hotel reserved there. Yokai Academy is almost seven hours away from Isogashi, so I really hope that you aren't planning to stay too long in Umiman tomorrow."

Kurumu grimaced, realizing how much of an imposition this was.

"I think we were just going to do a movie, lunch and some karaoke. I can skip the karaoke if you want."

"As long as we leave Ikinakawa before two, I'm fine. I don't want to be driving after midnight."

Kurumu paused, taking in a deep breath of this thick, musty air. She sauntered out into the street.

"So Kokoa knew this would happen."

"Apparently so. Have you eaten?"

Kurumu managed a smile, shaking her head.

"No. But I would like to stop by my friend's place before we do anything else. I should tell them what happened to me and that I'll be leaving tomorrow."

"Hopefully that won't take too long as I doubt these restaurants will be open much longer."

Kurumu snorted as she walked off, intent on that alley between the hospital and the hotel.

"It wouldn't be the first time I've made due with snacks."
