Nessie was instructed to spend the day lying low, as if everything was normal. She went to the library to get a head start on her assignments.
The aroma of humans around her was intoxicating, reminding her of the taste of Kevin's blood on her lips. She fidgeted in her seat. They smelled the same as they always had, but for the first time in her life, it was difficult to ignore. The floodgate had been opened.
She ran out of things to do far sooner than she wanted to. She stared at a page in a random textbook and listened to everyone around her.
Word of Kevin's hospitalization spread quickly. She overheard a group at the table nearby speculating.
"It's so scary," one girl said. "One of my friends says she saw him at a party that night and now he's fighting for his life."
"The university hasn't said anything. Do you think they're trying to cover something up?" another girl said.
"I don't know. They need to tell us something. We have a right to know. Especially after what happened last time."
"The university doesn't care about us, only prospective students. God forbid this hurts their reputation."
Nessie's heart raced in her chest. She grew angry at Seth. Why couldn't he just let her finish her meal? He shouldn't have been in the woods anyway. With a child of the moon on the loose, he was being reckless, putting them all in danger. The last thing they needed was a wolf sighting. If it weren't for him, Kevin probably wouldn't have even been reported missing. Everyone would assume he just ran off. Nessie doubted anyone would even bother looking for him. Nobody cared about Kevin—except maybe Kat.
She shoved her textbook in her bag and headed to her dorm. She found her roommate sitting at her desk, seemingly excited about the situation.
"Did you hear what happened to the guy in SAE?" Kimmy said.
Nessie nodded. "It's awful. I feel bad for his friends," Nessie's lie sounded false to her own ears, but Kimmy didn't seem to care enough to notice. Had Kimmy always smelled so delicious?
"I was talking to a Theta and they said they heard he got stabbed," Kimmy said.
Nessie nodded. "I saw him earlier in the night and he was definitely on something. He probably overdosed."
Kimmy's eyes focused on her like a hawk. "You saw him? When?"
Nessie froze. She stuck with the details that the sorority girls would be able to vouch for. If she got caught in a lie now, she'd put them at risk. "He showed up at the sorority house."
Her eyes bugged out. "You might have been one of the last people to see him."
"What? Why do you say that?" Nessie panicked, wondering how she already managed to screw up.
"I've been interviewing people and monitoring Twitter and Facebook all day and I've put together a timeline," Kimmy explained. She rummaged through her notebook and flipped to a page covered in times and locations. "Tell me everything you know. We could solve this!"
Nessie shook her head. "What are you talking about Kimmy? This isn't one of your true crime shows. This is real life. The police will handle it."
Kimmy snorted. "Oh please, it's been less than two years since the last student went missing and they haven't had a single lead. They aren't even considering that the two cases are connected."
"How do you know so much about this?" Nessie said in awe.
Kimmy just shrugged. "You'd be surprised what's online."
"Okay, whatever," Nessie brushed her off. "If you want to play detective, have fun, but leave me out of this."
Nessie stormed to the back of the dorm. What had she done? Her roommate was on her case and treating her like a scavenger hunt.
She climbed into her bunk and buried herself under her comforter. It had been over 30 hours since she last slept so she was able to get in a short nap despite the noise.
Kimmy's delicious scent infiltrated her dreams, fusing with the memory of Kevin's blood. She dreamt her roommate was running through the woods. Renesmee chased after the human. She had to do this. The secret was too important and Kimmy had discovered too much in her snooping. She was closing in on the human when she was abruptly pulled from the dream by the sound of her phone vibrating. She scanned the room, but Kimmy was gone. Renesmee felt an urge to go look for her.
Wait, what was she thinking? She couldn't kill her roommate. She was just a college girl with a true crime obsession. She wasn't a danger, not like Kevin was.
A voice in the back of Nessie's head couldn't help but consider that maybe they would be safer if she put a permanent end to Kimmy's snooping. Nessie pushed the thought away and grabbed a granola bar in an attempt to placate the hungry voice.
She checked her phone and saw a missed call from Jacob. He was coming to pick her up and take her back to the house for the family meeting. She'd already been reprimanded this morning, this meeting was to discuss the family's next actions now that Carlisle's hospital shift had ended.
She sighed and grabbed her shoes. She knew there was no getting around this.
Jacob didn't look at her as she climbed inside the Rabbit.
"This is a mess," Nessie said.
"What were you thinking? How could you attack someone, Ness?" Jacob asked. He put the car in drive and pulled away from the hall.
"You weren't there," Nessie said, "You didn't hear the things he was saying. He hurt Kat. He would've gone after Seth. I was just trying to protect them."
Jacob nodded. "I get where you're coming from, but he's still a person. You can't kill people."
"But you can? Funny how that rule only applies to me," Nessie said.
"What the hell are you talking about? I've never killed anyone," Jacob was caught off guard by the statement.
"Right, sorry. I forgot vampires aren't people," Nessie mumbled.
Jacob quickly ate his words. "That's different. I was protecting your mother."
"Would you have spared them otherwise?" she asked.
Jacob didn't answer. He didn't need to.
"Kevin was a killer, too," Nessie pressed, "or he would've been if I hadn't done something."
"You don't know that," Jacob said.
"So I was just supposed to do nothing and wait and see? What if he hurt Kat again?"
"We wouldn't have let that happen," Jacob promised.
"There it is again. You're the only one who can intervene. I have to stand aside and run away the moment things get dangerous."
"Yes," Jacob said. "I can't let you get hurt."
"You wouldn't have cared about Kevin if he were a vampire," Nessie grumbled.
"You can't fight a vampire," Jacob said.
"Exactly," Nessie said. "Monsters like Kevin are the only ones I can take in a fight. Maybe I want to be a hero, too."
Jacob sighed. "I guess you have a point. I'm sorry."
"Thank you," Nessie sighed. "I'm glad somebody understands. I don't think my family will see it the same way."
Jacob put the car in park in front of the huge house. "Good luck."
"Can you come inside with me?" Nessie said.
Jacob hesitated. "I don't think I'm invited."
"You've been a part of this family as long as I have," Nessie said. "The objectors need to get over themselves."
Jacob nodded. He stepped out of his car. Nessie followed. She was grateful full she'd have at least one ally going into whatever dumpster fire was about to go down.
He held the front door open for her and she stepped inside in front of him. The entire family was waiting at the dining room table. Nessie had no choice but to sit in the last available chair in between her parents. Bella glared daggers at her progeny.
Jacob hung back, leaning against the doorframe rather than taking a seat at the table. A couple of the family members seemed unappreciative of Jacob's presence. Rosalie glared at him.
Carlisle started the conversation as soon as she took her seat. He was seated at the head of the table "This morning, the wolves led me to an injured individual. I was unaware of the nature of the injuries at the time. I would like to apologize to all of you, it was not my intent to put us in danger." His eyes passed over Nessie as he apologized.
"Don't apologize, doc," Jacob said. "You're just trying to save him."
Carlisle nodded without looking up at the werewolf.
Edward updated everyone on the present status of the situation, "Kevin was airlifted to a hospital in Portland better equipped to treat his injuries. He will wake up in two days and he'll be released in a couple weeks—assuming something else doesn't get him."
"What do you mean?" Carlisle asked.
"He won't succumb to his injuries, at least not without interference," Alice explained, "In some of the visions, we kill him," she glanced briefly at Jasper, "but even when we don't, I still can't see him surviving through the month. There's something in the way that I can't see past. I can't be sure as to what's going to kill him."
Carlisle nodded thoughtfully. "Only time will tell, can you see what he'll say about the situation?"
"I don't think he remembers much, but he'll pretend he does," Alice said, "He'll try to use the information to get us to agree to a bargain, but it's a bluff. He won't talk—he won't live long enough to get a chance to."
"What if we entertain his offer?" Jasper said, exploring every possibility.
"I can't see a future with that happening," Alice said. "He'll ask us to kill Kat."
A growl rumbled in Jacob's chest. "Not an option," he growled.
"Of course not," Esme insisted.
"At least we know what's going on with the visions," Jacob said. "Seth will finish the job."
"I'm not sure that's it," Edward said.
"You think he wouldn't?" Jacob said. "I'll have trouble keeping him from storming the hospital when he hears about this."
"Then you'll have to keep this from him," Edward said.
"You're joking," Jacob said. "You think I'm just going to stand by if he's threatening Kat's life?"
"The dog was fine with him using her as a punching bag," Rosalie retorted.
Jacob took a step forward towards Rosalie, his entire body shaking.
"I don't think it's him," Alice said. "Usually, when the wolves are involved, the vision disappears entirely. I wouldn't be able to see the funeral until after it was too late to stop him. This is more like…" She glanced across the table to look at Nessie.
"You think I'm going back for him?" Nessie realized. Bella's face contorted in fury as if she were confessing to a plan.
Jacob looked at her in a way he'd never looked at her before. Like Victor Frankenstein seeing his finished creation for the first time, fully understanding the horror previously invisible to his obsession. The look was gone from Jacob's face as quickly as it had appeared.
Bella's reaction was expected, but it was the brief confliction in Jacob's eye that had Nessie rushing to defend herself.
"It's not me, I swear!" she insisted. "I messed up, I know that. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice."
Not that she didn't want to, she just knew she wouldn't get away with it. She was insulted that they thought she was dumb enough to sneak into the hospital.
"Are we seriously considering letting him live?" Rosalie hissed. "He has to die."
"He puts us in danger," Jasper tacked on. Nessie suppressed a grin. She knew somebody had to be on her side. Edward growled at the direction of her thoughts.
Emmett snorted. "I think I have déjà vu."
Edward's mouth twitched into a grin.
"What am I missing?" Bella asked.
"We had a similar conversation about you," Edward explained.
"Oh, well thanks for not killing me," Bella said.
"Happy to be of service," Edward nodded.
"I still stand by what I said then," Carlisle said. "We've had accidents in the past, but I will not allow any member of this family to murder in cold blood." His eyes locked on Nessie, sending a clear warning. "Regardless of how just the reason, if we make exceptions, we risk something much more important. We risk losing the essence of who we are."
Nessie contained her expression, knowing now was not the time to argue. Carlisle would pat himself on the back for refusing to pull the lever, letting the trolley run its course. She realized that, aside from Bella and Jacob, everyone else seemed to move past her involvement, the conversation focused on what their next actions.
"Unless someone plans on marrying Kevin, this situation needs to be handled a bit differently," Rosalie hissed.
"We're already on the Volturi's radar," Jasper said. "We can't take risks and leave loose strings; we have to be flawless."
Edward snarled. He glared across the table at Alice. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I knew you would overreact," Alice said. "He's just checking in; I don't even see him approaching us."
"It seems Felix will be paying us a visit within the next couple of days," Edward growled.
Nessie gasped. The vampires froze in place. The only sound was Jacob and Nessie's accelerated breathing.
"He's coming alone," said Alice. "He'll monitor the situation for a few days and move on. As long as nothing happens to Kevin in that time, interest will die down."
"We can discuss this further later," Carlisle said. Nessie suspected there were things he didn't want to bring up in front of Jacob. "Let's focus on the next couple of days."
"We've attempted to plant the seeds to imply it was an animal attack," Edward said, "but the police aren't buying it. They've been interviewing students all day. Even Leah had to give a statement. They were suspicious of Seth's absence, but Jasper was able to sway their emotion so they think the lead was not interesting enough to pursue."
"What about us?" asked Jacob. "If you're sticking with this animal attack cover, that puts us in danger, too."
"Jacob's right," said Bella. She momentarily stopped glaring at Nessie to defend Jacob. "We can't blame them. Not when they did everything to try and fix this."
"We're trying to blame the Child of the Moon, not them," Edward explained.
"That's so much better," Jacob rolled his eyes. "If someone's tracking werewolves, do you really think they're going to care which is which? Find another scapegoat."
"It's too late to change the story," Carlisle said. Jacob clenched his fist. "There are other details we need to work out."
Edward growled. "That's not an option."
"What?" Emmett complained about the conversation he couldn't hear.
"Edward is opposed to moving," Carlisle said.
"I'm opposed to disappearing," Edward clarified. "Not while Charlie is still alive."
Bella and Nessie protested in unison.
"If we leave now, the Volturi with think we're hiding something and give chase," Alice said. "We have to stay here—all of us." She was looking at Jasper as she delivered the final three words. Jasper's mouth contorted into a frown.
"We'll stay for now, but we need to keep our options open and consider moving at the end of the semester," Carlisle said.
"No!" Nessie shouted. She was starting to get to know the Betas. She didn't want to start over. Not this soon. She needed to learn more about sororities and understand what they were looking for during recruitment, that way she'd be able to get into whatever sorority she wanted. "I messed up, I promise I won't do it again. Please, let me stay."
Carlisle seemed to concede, giving Nessie a second chance. Bella was far less trusting, seeming to take Nessie's actions today as her personal failure.
"On the subject of disappearing," Edward gave Jacob a hard look. "About five years ago, Bella provided you with a fake ID with the intent of helping you to flee to safety. It has been brought to our attention that you've been loaning it to underage members of your pack."
"Jacob!" Bella scowled.
Jacob threw his hands up in defense, "I was just trying to help Seth out."
"Those documents are necessary for us to be able to maintain the life we live," Carlisle lectured. "They're not a toy. We don't want to give law enforcement a reason to investigate their source."
"We were able to deter the police from investigating the bar," Jasper said. "If they had, they would have questioned how Seth was able to get in."
Jacob cringed as he realized just how close Seth was to getting busted with the fake. "That's my bad."
"Please return all the false documents Bella provided you," Carlisle requested.
"Sure, sure," Jacob said. "That won't be a problem."
Bella drove Nessie back to her dorm, laying out strict ground rules for the upcoming week. It seemed she was determined to monitor Nessie's every movement.
The next morning, Bella was waiting outside Nessie's dorm to walk her to class. She refused to let Nessie go anywhere unsupervised. She stuck to Nessie's side, only parting ways to attend her own classes, but not before passing her off to Rosalie or some other babysitter. Nessie was looking forward to her Ethics lecture to have a reprieve, but to her horror, her mother strode right into the hall with her.
"You're not enrolled in this class," Nessie protested.
"It's a large lecture. No one will notice."
Nessie took a seat beside Seth. Leah stared daggers at her and Bella. Nessie briefly considered walking back out, but this was her last class of the day and the last barrier protecting her from the full strength of her mother's wrath.
"Where are Kat and Ian?" Nessie asked.
"Ian's in jail," Leah hissed.
"Sorry," Nessie muttered, looking down at the floor.
"I haven't seen Kat since we got back from Portland, yesterday," Seth said. "Would you mind stopping by the sorority house to check on her?"
"Not at all," Nessie grinned. "I'll go after class."
"I'll be with you," Bella added.
Nessie stifled a groan. Bella was insufferable through class. The four of them broke out into a group to discuss the trolley problem. Bella made a snide comment about how sometimes, it's not your responsibility to pull the lever.
When class was over, Nessie practically ran to the sorority house. She rang the doorbell and waited until Amy answered to let her in.
"Hey, is Kat home?" Nessie asked.
"Yeah, she's upstairs in her room," said the girl. "Who's your friend?"
"I'm Bella," she said with a bone-chilling smile. Amy took a step backward. "I'm interested in learning more about your sorority."
Amy immediately jumped into recruiter mode. Goosebumps appeared on her arms, a clear instinctual fear of the angry vampire, though she hid it well.
Nessie slipped past them and went upstairs. Nessie didn't know which door was hers, but she found one that had a large "M" and "S" surrounded by pictures containing Kat and Sabrina.
Nessie knocked softly on the door. Sabrina answered the door.
"Hey," said Nessie softly. "I came to check in on Kat."
Sabrina glanced over her shoulder at Kat.
"It's fine, let her in," Kat said.
Nessie took a step inside. The room featured an array of posters and canvases. The décor ranged from cheesy phrases about sisterhood to satanic imagery.
"Hey, Kat," Nessie smiled. "How are you feeling?"
"Awful. Seth and I drove all the way to Portland and they didn't even let me see him," Kat sighed. "I tried to tell them nobody else was coming for him, but they didn't listen. They literally wouldn't tell us anything. I have no idea if he was in stable condition. I've been worried sick. How could this happen?"
"Maybe it would be best if you tried to forget about him?" Nessie asked. Alice's words echoed in her head. If he survived, he would try to kill her.
"What's it to you?" Kat said defensively.
Nessie puts her hands up. "I'm just trying to help. Maybe you should use this time to talk to other people without his chasing them off."
She thought about what Alice said. When Seth decided to kill Kevin, Alice wouldn't see it coming. Nessie was certain Kevin's days were numbered. The more distance between Kevin and Kat, the better.
"Are you joking? He's fighting for his life. He literally could have died and I wouldn't know. I'm not going to go look for a hookup at the bar."
"He's your ex, isn't he?" Nessie said. Sabrina cleared her throat loudly.
"You can't be serious," Kat said.
"I'm just saying, it sounded like his injuries were pretty bad. I don't think you should get your hopes up," Nessie rationed. She knew she couldn't tell Kat the truth, but she tried to warn her as best she could. The more mentally prepared she was, the less of a shock it would be.
Kat stared at her in shock. Tears welled up in the corner of her eye.
"Nessie, can I speak with you in the hallway?" asked Sabrina.
"Sure," Nessie said.
They stepped out of the room and Sabrina closed the door softly. Her caring tone immediately turned to anger.
"What the hell is your problem?" Sabrina demanded. "She's stressed. Why are you insulting her?"
"Sorry," Nessie said defensively. "I just thought you of all people would see the silver lining."
"What silver lining? You can't just tell her he's probably going to die. I don't care if he was the spawn of Satan himself. She still cares about him. The least you can do is show some sympathy."
"I am sympathetic, but she can't be sad forever."
"Yes. She literally can be," Sabrina said. "As long as he's in the hospital, she's not going to be able to think about much else."
"You can't honestly tell me she'd be better off if he survives."
"I think you should leave," Sabrina said, "and don't come back. I don't think this sorority is the right fit for you."
Nessie's jaw dropped. "Are you kicking me out of the sorority?"
"No. You were never a member," Sabrina turned and stalked back into the room, shutting the door roughly behind her. Nessie heard the click of the lock.
Nessie stared at the closed door in shock before turning to leave. Bella's eyes locked on Nessie as she came down the stairs. It was clear from her expression that she had heard every word. Bella excused herself politely from her conversation with Amy and left with Nessie.
The unspoken "I told you so" radiated from her body language. She walked Nessie back to her dorm. She knew better than to try to leave before morning. Somewhere outside, one of her family members would be lurking.
Nessie checked her email. She had a message from the sorority. She clicked on it. She read through the message and her heart sank. In a few short sentences, the email stated that they appreciated her interest in Beta Iota Tau, but they regret to inform her that they do not feel she would be a good fit for their sorority.
Nessie's heart sank. She curled up in her bed and cried herself to sleep.
The next morning, Bella was waiting for Nessie outside her dorm. She wondered how long Bella would be able to hold her anger. They walked together to their shared Communications class and sat in their usual seats. Edward gave her a hard smile. She could tell he was sympathetic to her struggle, but he wasn't opposed to Bella's punishment. The professor began his lesson and Nessie did her best to pay attention.
Midway through the lecture, Bella stiffened in her seat next to Nessie. She turned to Edward and exchanged an alarmed look. He furrowed his brow. His eyes scanned the room. Bella's anger at Nessie disappeared in favor of some larger threat.
What's wrong? Nessie asked her mother, eager for the reprieve.
"There's someone here," Bella whispered. "One of us. I can feel something attacking my shield."
"That's impossible," Edward whispered. "Alice would've seen them coming."
"Is it the Volturi?" Nessie squeaked.
"I don't know," Bella said. "It's not anyone I recognize, this feels… different."
"Let's go check it out," Edward said, quietly shoving his notebook into his backpack.
"Wait, won't people notice if we all leave class together?" fretted Bella.
"This is college, not high school. Nobody cares," Edward assured her.
The trio stood up from their seats and headed for the door. The professor shot them a disappointed look but otherwise continued on with his lecture.
"Keep your shield tight around us," Edward advised. Emmett joined them in the hallway. Nessie realized he'd been patrolling the building, keeping an eye out while they were in class. She wondered what other precautions they were taking.
Edward told him what they'd learned.
"Can you tell where it's coming from?" Emmett asked.
Bella furrowed her brow in concentration. "It seems like it's coming from above up."
"There's someone on the roof," Edward said.
"How many?" Emmett asked.
"Three," Edward said.
"I'm on it," replied Emmett. He bounded up the staircase. Nessie and her parents followed at a less conspicuous pace.
A growl rumbled in Edward's chest. "It is the Volturi."
Nessie let out a gasp. He wasn't supposed to come near them, but of course, Alice wouldn't have been able to see Nessie and she was the one they would want to speak to. She felt her entire body quiver in fear. Bella wrapped her arm around Nessie's shoulder and pulled her close to her side. Nessie didn't stop her. Suddenly, she was three months old again and her mother's arms were the safest place in the universe.
A few moments later, Edward's eyes widened. "Interesting," said Edward.
Emmett reemerged, coming back down the staircase with a confused look on his face.
"Cover him with your shield," Edward instructed.
Bella nodded and concentrated. A look of realization instantly crossed Emmett's face.
"Emmett can't remember what he's doing unless your shield is covering him," Edward explained.
"Let's stick together then," Bella said.
Emmett took point while Edward took the rear as they made their way to the roof access.
"I thought was Felix coming alone," Emmett said.
Edward shook his head. "It seems Aro has found a way to exploit the loopholes in Alice's visions."
Edward joined Emmett at the point as he pushed open the door.
Nessie stood in back, Bella crouched protectively in front of her.
"Felix," Edward growled.
"Hello Edward," said Felix with a smirk.
Bella gasped. Nessie tore her eyes away from the man to follow her gaze. She saw the two new members that her father had referenced. Bella was wrong when she had said the threat was one of them.
The threat was like her. Hybrids. The two small figures were like Nessie, neither human nor vampire.
The eldest was about the size of an elementary student, but Nessie knew he had to be much younger. She estimated that he was about three years old based off of how large she had been when she was that age. His skin was the other of a warm mahogany, but his eyes were a greyish blue color, like the sky on a cloudy day.
The youngest couldn't be more than a few months old. He was the size of a large toddler. He was much paler, his skin was closer to the color of elm. He hid behind the older child.
Aside from skin tone, the boys were very similar. They had the same blue eyes and facial structure. They were so similar, Nessie suspected they were siblings—half siblings, as it was unlikely a human woman would've survived to carry a second pregnancy. Nessie felt a pang of sympathy for the unknown women and clutched her own mother tighter. Their faces were familiar, but Nessie couldn't quite pinpoint why.
The pair wore the telltale robes signifying position within the Volturi ranks. They were a dark grey color that was normally reserved for the highest-ranking members of the guard.
"Who are they?" asked Bella in shock.
"My name is AJ," introduced the older hybrid. "This is Dante. We are here representing the Volturi."
The younger child peeked around his brother and watched Nessie with curious eyes.
"It seems your daughter has been getting into some trouble," Felix said to Edward.
"We are monitoring the situation closely," Edward said. "We have no intention of causing a disturbance."
"It's too late for that," Felix said. "The humans are abuzz."
"The university is coming under fire for its response," Edward corrected. "They don't suspect us. There is no danger."
"That is our decision," Felix said. "The human has seen too much. He needs to be silenced."
"If that is your verdict, we won't get in your way," Edward said.
The younger child reached up and tugged on his older brother's robe. AJ leaned down and Dante whispered something in his ear. AJ nodded and stood back up.
"He says you have information regarding a Child of the Moon," AJ reported.
"A child of the moon?" Felix's eyes narrowed.
"We spotted one in the woods last week," Edward explained. "We were unable to catch it before the moon set."
"Looking for more guard dogs?" Felix raised an eyebrow.
"We were trying to put a stop to it," Edward snarled. "We aren't looking for any trouble."
"I see," Felix said. "Maybe we should stick around for a while longer and make sure the situation is handled appropriately."
"We all want the same thing, I'm sure there won't be any issues," Edward said.
He gestured for them to leave. The Cullens headed back down the staircase with Emmett taking the rear.
As they exited the building, Nessie spotted another face she recognized. A man leaned against a tree in the quad. His skin was dark brown and his hair was pulled back into a braid. He turned to watch them leave. His warm teak eyes met Nessie's. She couldn't help but break into a grin at the sight of him.
"Nahuel!" exclaimed Nessie.
Edward hissed a warning. "He's with the Volturi."
Nessie's face abruptly fell. How could he? Nahuel had been their saving grace. How could he even consider joining the very forces that once threatened to destroy them?
Nahuel responded to her look of betrayal with one of sympathy. There was an explanation in his eye. Nessie knew he wanted to talk to her.
"Let's go," Edward placed a hand on her back and guided her to his car and away from Nahuel.
