Chapter 15
Vi sat back on the couch, unable to move as she listened to the arguing coming from beyond the door to the outside.
After Jack had made his way into Caitlyn's home and found his Fiancé in the warm embrace of another, he found himself irate. He began to yell, accusing his future wife of unimaginable things, before Caitlyn forced them both out front, to argue away from prying ears.
Vi sat still, as she tried to listen, unable to make out full sentences. She found herself becoming angry every time she heard Jack raise his voice louder at Caitlyn. She wished she could move, pull herself up, and run to Caitlyn's aide. The heat in her chest writhing, as she balled her fist. She readied herself on the edge of the couch, when suddenly the voices softened, as the door began to open, bringing in a new face.
Jayce walked through the door, holding a bag of food, he walked in, setting the food on the kitchen counter as he made his way to the couch next to Vi.
"Any idea what that's about"? He said looking at Vi, motioning to the front door.
Vi stared at him, unsure how to respond. Sure, she could tell him what Jack had just walked in on, but what did it mean? She couldn't explain it herself. What was the relationship between her and Caitlyn. Were they still just friends, partners, more, less, Vi couldn't find an answer as the intimate moments she shared with Caitlyn flashed through her eyes bringing more confusion than answers.
"No idea", Vi said as honestly as she could.
"Well, I hope everything is alright", he said as he sat listening, now unable to hear anything. "You hungry, I brought some really good burritos from this amazing place just up the street from the academy".
"Sure", said Vi, as she kept her gaze towards the door.
Jayce got up, and began preparing the lunch, by grabbing some plates, and utensils, before pulling a couple items out of the bag.
Vi looked at Jayce, as she saw just how comfortable he was in Caitlyn's home. Knowing where everything was stored, as he looked like he had been here many times before.
Just then Caitlyn entered back into the house.
"Oh good I'm starving". Caitlyn said, sending shivers up Vi's spine at how casually she entered the room, like nothing had just happened.
Caitlyn and Jayce took a seat at the table, while Vi enjoyed her meal on the couch. The three engaged in casual conversation like everything was alright in the world.
"Hey anyway I could get some more water". Vi asked while raising her glass for attention.
"Sure", Caitlyn said, making her way over to Vi and refilling her glass, while avoiding eye contact.
Caitlyn then turned from Vi's gaze, and sat herself back in her chair, where she continued the casual conversation.
'That was weird' Vi thought, as she watched the two engage.
Time ticked by as the three enjoyed the rest of the day, as evening approached. Vi found herself becoming uncomfortable sitting on the couch for as long as she had, but didn't want to interrupt as she watched Caitlyn relax more and more in the company of Jayce.
"Hey, I don't mean to be a bother, but anyway I can get help to the toilet, then maybe the bed"?
"Of course," Caitlyn said as she walked to the couch. "Jayce I'm just going to get Vi set up for bed, if you want to stay there's a bottle wine in the cabinet".
"Sounds great" Jayce said as he walked to the kitchen and pulled down some wine glasses.
Caitlyn then helped Vi get ready for the night, still being gentle, but Vi could feel something was different. Caitlyn then proceeded to get Vi something for the pain, before heading to the door, and turning off the lights, as she proceeded to avoid looking directly at her partner.
"Yell if you need anything" she said as she exited the room.
Vi stared on as she watched Caitlyn make her way down the hall and out of site. She sat back as she listened to the quiet chatter coming from the two close friends just feet away.
Vi felt her eyelids grow heavy, as the effects from the pain medicine took over. Before she knew it she was in a deep sleep. Time ticked on as yet another nightmare infiltrated her world. This one, different from the rest. Vi sat in darkness as voices filled the air. Unable to hear the words being spoken, she sat trying to understand what was being said. The voices grew louder, but the words were still jumbled. Suddenly they were yelling, screaming, with no meaning.
Vi threw herself awake, as the cold sweat dripped from her brow. She turned to the empty spot next to her, as she hoped for a body of relief. A light found its way into the hall, as Vi felt her chest fill with excitement. She watched once again as a figure entered the bathroom, then exited a few moments later, followed by darkness. She waited, hopeful the figure would enter the room, bringing warmth and safety. Time moved slowly as the emptiness grew. Seconds turning into minutes, minutes into hours, as the young Enforcer lay still as the chasm of the void engulfed her.
The new day brought light as Vi laid still eyes wide open as she watched Caitlyn casually enter the room.
"Hey, you're up early, you sleep alright?"
"Fine", Vi said with a gloomy stare.
"Glad to here, let's get you ready"
"For what?"
"Well for the day, you don't want to just stay in bed, do you?"
"I guess not" Vi said, as she sat herself up, allowing Caitlyn to help her to her feet.
Caitlyn helped Vi get cleaned up, and then brought her to the couch turning on the tv. She then walked to the kitchen, cleaned the dishes from breakfast before making her way to the living room, and sat in the chair on the opposite side of the room as Vi.
Vi looked to Caitlyn as she fidgeted in her seat, she couldn't help the feelings of discomfort grow. She looked to Caitlyn, wanting to talk to her, but watched as Caitlyn kept her eyes forward, never so much as a glance in Vi's direction.
The day moved on staying on the same path. Caitlyn only talking to Vi, when she is needing something. The little things that Vi found comfort in before, she now found to be awkward and distressing. Things like Caitlyn helping to change her bandages, seem to have turned into a chore for the Sherriff. Helping Vi to the restroom, becoming a burden. Vi hoped she was reading into things but couldn't help noticing the drastic change of atmosphere the Sherriff brought with her.
As night fell, Vi was hopeful a new day would bring the Caitlyn she had become accustomed to back. She closed her eyes, hoping for a quick night, with mild dreams.
Vi woke in the night, plagued by more nightmares. She tried to wrap herself tight in the blankets hoping to bring comfort, with no success. She laid back awake, as loneliness made its way in.
The next morning was no different. Caitlyn made her way through the room, avoiding eye contact with Vi, while getting her set up for the day. She then helped Vi to the couch, turned the tv on, but this time after breakfast she retired herself to her office, leaving Vi alone.
The day drug on with no relief for the Enforcer. Vi found herself becoming angry, and agitated at the empty room she sat in. She wished she could just be home, if this was how things were going to be moving forward. She sat and watched as Caitlyn only left the office to make quick trips out to either make a quick check on Vi or get herself more tea.
The day went by slowly, as Vi was happy to let the night come. She laid in bed growing used to the emptiness of it all.
The next few days were the same, only thing changing, was Vi becoming physically stronger, relying on Caitlyn less and less.
"We have your Drs appointment today. Hopefully you get the sling off, and stiches out" Caitlyn said as she got herself ready and handed Vi some clean cloths.
"Couldn't come soon enough" Vi said as she got herself changed.
Vi hobbled to the car, only needing Caitlyn's assistance to get herself in before heading to the Dr.
The drive home was silent as the two sat, Caitlyn finally breaking the tension.
"You want to stop and get lunch?" Caitlyn said, trying to make lite of the situation
"Not hungry" Vi said as she looked out the window.
"Vi, you really need to eat, keep your strength up you know".
"Don't worry yourself with my needs Cupcake" Vi said trying not to show too much emotion.
"What is that suppose to mean?" Caitlyn said, slightly taken back by the comment.
"Just take me back already, so you can go on ignoring my existence, will you?"
"Vi"
"Just don't Caitlyn, please, I can't, not right now" Vi said as tears threatened to spill over.
Caitlyn sat quietly, as she drove them back to her place. She parked the car, and hurried over to help Vi exit the car, only to be pushed aside.
"Vi please let me just help you up"
"I don't need your help, not anymore. And don't worry, once my leg is a little stronger ill be out of your hair for good"
"Vi I don't want that" Caitlyn said, as she watched Vi slowly walk past her.
Vi entered Caitlyn's house as she made her way to the master bedroom, slamming the door shut behind her, before plopping herself on the bed.
She wanted nothing more than a stiff drink, just something strong enough to erase the day, and maybe the next few. She reached for her phone, as she stared at the unanswered messages from the only person texting her.
'Hey Cassie, sorry I haven't responded, phone has been acting up. Anyway you could do me a favor?'
Vi sat back, as her phone was suddenly flooded with messages. She sent a few responses, as she laid back down and waited.
A couple hours passed, as Vi lay on the bed, not wanting to return to the living room, as she heard the doorbell ring from the other room.
She got to her feet as quickly as possible, trying to make it to the door before Caitlyn without success.
"Cassie, what are you doing here, at my home?" Caitlyn said as she turned and looked at Vi coming down the hallway.
"I invited her Cupcake, didn't think you would mind" Vi said giving Cassie a smile.
Cassie pushed her way through the door, as she ran towards Vi, practically knocking her over,
"Seriously, she can still barely walk" Caitlyn said as she watched Cassie throw her arms around Vi.
"Come on Cassie, let's leave the Sherriff to her business" Vi said grabbing her hand and leading her to the master bedroom.
"Stop, not in my room, you guys can stay in the living room, ill give you privacy. I have some stuff I need to work on in my office anyway".
Vi turned Cassie back around and headed towards the couch, as Caitlyn shut herself in her office.
"You bring the stuff?" Vi whispered to Cassie.
"Sure, did babe, you want some now?" Cassie said as she pulled a large clear bottle filled with liquor from her bag.
"Ya, but we can't let Caitlyn see, she doesn't exactly approve"
"Prude" Cassie said as she pulled the cap off, and took a big swig, handing the bottle to Vi.
Vi looked at the bottle, as her heart began to race, all thoughts leaving her head as she tipped the bottle back and took multiple gulps.
"Easy, I thought we were going to share" Cassie said, as she watched Vi down the liquor.
"You bring anymore, or just this one" Vi asked as she took another gulp.
"I brought one more" Cassie said as she pulled the second bottle from her bag.
Vi took the bottle, bent over, and stashed it under the couch. "Good ill save that one for later" she said as she continued to drink.
Cassie sat next to her, as she began running her hands through Vi's hair, as she watched the woman, drink herself into a different person.
Vi sat back, as she allowed the effects of the alcohol to consume her. The presence of the person next to her could be felt, but not comprehended.
Cassie began kissing Vi, as the Enforcer laid back, enjoying the touch, but not fully engaging in the play.
Before Vi knew it the bottle was empty, and somehow her shirt was on the floor. She looked up to see a figure hovering over her, kissing her, while running her hands down her muscular body. Vi only feeling the slightest bit of touch, as her body became numb from the alcohol.
Caitlyn sat in her office, as she went over countless emails she had missed over the past week or so while out of the office. She tried to concentrate but found it difficult with the annoying giggling coming from the other room. She decided to turn on some soft music to drown out the unwanted presence. Time ticked on as she got up to stretch, and get herself a drink, only to be horrified by what she walked in on.
Caitlyn walked out into the living room, to see Cassie straddling Vi, both topless, as Cassie was kissing Vi, as she ran her hands all through the Enforcers hair.
"Are you Fucking kidding me right now" Caitlyn said as she entered the living room.
"I thought you said you wouldn't bother us" Cassie said as she pulled herself further into Vi.
Caitlyn then walked over, picking up the empty bottle from the table as she looked into the spaced-out eyes her partner was wearing. Caitlyn then bent down, picked up Cassie's shirt, threw it at her, before shouting "Get out of my house".
"But Vi wants me here don't you" Cassie said as she looked at Vi.
Vi looked forward, unable to comprehend what was going on.
"I said get out, you are no longer welcome in my home, if you return, I will have you arrested for trespassing, do you understand?" Caitlyn said as she removed the girl from Vi's lap.
"Vi is right about you, you know" Cassie said as she found herself on Caitlyn's front porch, shirt only halfway on.
"Anything Vi wants to say about me, she can say to my face" Caitlyn said as she slammed the door.
Caitlyn then made her way to the couch where Vi lay, already passed out. She slowly lowered herself to the floor as she began to sob, as her world began to spin.
