In the depths of the endless woods, there existed a kingdom forgotten by time and fortune. Cloaked in the shadow of towering trees and mist-laden valleys, the kingdom of Oakwood was a place of quiet resilience. The people here were rugged and resourceful, for they had to be. The endless woods were not a place of fairy-tale wonder but a realm teeming with monsters and dangers. Among these hardy souls was Princess Hailey, a girl of noble blood but humble means, bound by the legacy of a once-great kingdom that had long since fallen into obscurity.
Hailey had grown up hearing the stories of her ancestors, tales of heroism and grandeur. Her great-great-grandmother had been a peasant, a woman chosen by a king for her strength, wisdom and aid she gave in the trials they faced together. But times had changed, and with them, the fortunes of Oakwood. The kingdom, once known for its abundant crops and thriving trade, had dwindled into near isolation. Her father, King Roderick, had made the fateful decision to focus on self-sufficiency, withdrawing from the intricate web of alliances and social standings that governed the world outside their borders. This decision had caused their social ranking to plummet, leaving them at the bottom of the ladder, almost forgotten by the other kingdoms.
Despite their fallen status, the royal family still bore the weight of their lineage. Hailey's two older brothers, Alexander and Marcus, had both attended the prestigious School for Good, where the destinies of princes and princesses were forged. Alexander, the eldest, had become a Follower, a role that left him supporting others' stories rather than leading his own. Marcus, the middle child, had barely scraped by with a 'Leader' pass, a fact celebrated by their kingdom as a small glimmer of hope in their otherwise bleak prospects. Their sister, Amelia, the eldest child, hadn't been so fortunate and failed her classes, disappearing. Her fate, a cautionary tale whispered among the townsfolk.
For Hailey, the expectations were different from her two elder brothers. She was the youngest, still a child when her sister vanished and seen as a delicate flower in need of protection. Her father's fear of losing her, like Amelia, had led to a life of confinement within the castle walls. But Hailey's heart was too wild for such restrictions. She yearned to explore the vast woods, to discover the secrets of the land she loved. It was this curiosity that had nearly cost her life on a fateful trip into the forest, a close encounter with a monstrous creature that had left her shaken but more determined than ever to learn how to defend herself.
Although her years of pleading had not once managed to sway her father's mind, after the incident that nearly claimed her life, her father finally relented. He allowed her to join her brothers in training, albeit begrudgingly. The knights of Oakwood were not just ceremonial guards; they were warriors, skilled in combating the myriad threats that lurked within the endless woods. Hailey learned to wield a sword, to shoot an arrow true, and to outsmart the creatures that prowled the forest. Yet, even as she trained, she knew that her future was not her own to shape. The reality of her status as a princess in a struggling kingdom meant that her life would be dictated by politics and alliances.
Her betrothal to Prince Andreas was a testament to this harsh reality. Andreas hailed from a middle-ranking kingdom, not rich but respectable, and his alliance was seen as a lifeline for Oakwood. Hailey had met him only a handful of times, finding him kind but distant. There was an unspoken understanding between them-neither had chosen this path, but they would walk it together. It was a pragmatic arrangement, devoid of the passion and romance that filled the stories she had grown up reading. Yet, in the quiet moments they shared, Hailey sensed a mutual respect that could possibly one day grow into something more.
With her fate seemingly sealed, Hailey, at seventeen years old, now embarked on a new chapter of her life: her first year at the School for Good. The school was a place where the destinies of royalty and nobility were crafted, a place where the stories of future heroes and heroines were written by the Storian, a mystical quill that dictated the fates of those who attended. Here, she was just another face among the many, a girl from a forgotten kingdom who had to bow low and stay out of the way.
