It felt very weird having to look up an actual 2008 calendar for this story, but you know what, it made me laugh. Worth it. I'll also start including the day of the week moving forward.
Chapter 2: Introductions
Friday, July 11th 2008
Between Takeharu, Mitsuru, and Ryuden, the room was silent. Eventually Ryuden raised his right hand, "Pardon me, Kirijo-sama, but what's SEES?"
Takeharu closed his eyes, "Right, you haven't been fully briefed on the night activities yet. That's on us for rushing you into the program." Mitsuru looked at her father, her face masking the confusion of his sentence. Takeharu motioned for her to look at Ryuden. "Yamamoto-kun here is trained in multiple forms of martial arts, as well as a few weapons. I have no doubt he'll serve you competently as a bodyguard." He leaned onto his desk with his elbows, "As for SEES, I'll leave you to brief him Mitsuru," he grabbed a folder off the desk and handed it to Mitsuru who wasted no time in grabbing it. He also pulled out a cell phone and tossed it to Ryuden, who caught it. "Everything you need to know about him is written in there. There's also a form with contact details for when he needs to make his weekly reports."
"Weekly reports?" Mitsuru couldn't help but ask.
Her father nodded, "Every Sunday, Yamamoto-kun is to call one of the numbers on that phone to leave his report. If nothing unusual happens, then the call shouldn't take more than five minutes. We can exclude this upcoming Sunday since it's only two days away."
"I see, I'll make sure he gets the form," Mitsuru said dutifully. Although, she was still displeased about having a bodyguard.
"One last thing before you go," Takeharu spoke again, "Despite his training, Ryuden has not had any time to practice using his persona during the dark hour. In fact, we haven't seen it yet."
"You haven't? Then are we sure he has one?" Mitsuru asked.
Takeharu nodded, "He has the potential, if nothing else."
"Beg your pardon Kirijo-sama, but I'm fairly certain I have a persona," booth Kirijo looked to Ryuden, "If I didn't, I'm pretty sure I would have died when the shadow attacked me that one night."
That got Mitsuru's attention, "You've already fought a shadow?"
Ryuden nodded, "Yeah, it wasn't a pretty fight. Now I'm stronger than I ever dreamed I could be. I'm confident in my ability to beat a shadow, but my first priority will always be protecting your well-being."
Takeharu nodded, that was the type of answer he was hoping for, "Good. Now then, Mitsuru, unless you have business elsewhere, you can take him to the dorm. His stuff was scheduled to be delivered before the end of the day."
"Of course, father," she made her way to the exit, "Take care of yourself." She said as she continued out. Ryuden stood up, bowed to Takeharu, and proceeded to follow Mitsuru outside.
Once they left, Takeharu pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a deep drag, "Here's hoping I'm right."
The walk outside and into the limo was completely silent. Ryuden remained silent, like a good, unnoticed bodyguard. Mitsuru had a serious look on her face. Once they got into the limo and were settled, Mitsuru spoke.
"SEES stands for Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad. Our goal is to eventually rid the world of shadows, as well as the dark hour itself," she stated suddenly. "Let me make myself clear Yamamoto-san, even though I haven't seen your persona yet I have no objections to you joining SEES."
Ryuden nodded, "I appreciate it ojou-sama. I promise I'll be a beneficial asset to the team."
Mitsuru hummed in affirmation, "As leader of the SEES I fully intend to help you integrate with the group. Our numbers are too few to be picky. We need all the help we can get."
"How many are there in SEES?" Ryuden asked.
Mitsuru frowned, "Including you, there's myself and one other active persona users."
"Such a low number. There's just three of us in SEES?"
Mitsuru nodded, "Well there's the chairman, who acts as our club advisor, but he isn't a persona user."
"Hold on, club advisor? Chairman?" Ryuden asked.
Mitsuru had a look of realization, as if just realizing he really was new to SEES as a whole, "Right, my apologies. It's been so long since we've gotten a new member that I've forgotten the whole concept is still new to you."
Ryuden shook his head, "It's not your fault ojou-sama, if anything I'm sorry I'm not better informed."
Now it was Mitsuru's turn to shake her head, "That's not on you. If anything, someone else in the Kirijo Group should have provided you with the information."
"Well, I can't begin to fathom what goes on behind the scenes to keep the group up and running, but now we're just getting sidetracked. What did you mean when you said club advisor and chairman?" Ryuden asked.
Mitsuru crossed her legs, "For all intents and purposes, SEES is an officially recognized club at Gekkoukan High School, complete with a club advisor. The chairman of the board, Shūji Ikutsuki, is our club advisor."
That's a name Ryuden remembered, specifically because of the tongue twister of a name, "Oh him! He's the one who recruited me to SEES."
"I see, you'll have to forgive me for not having read your file yet," she motioned to the folder in her lap, "Until today, I didn't know you existed."
"That's fair."
Mitsuru opened the folder, but didn't look at the pages yet, "If I may be frank for a moment," she started, "While I plan to fully support you within SEES, I still don't agree with my father's decision to assign you as my bodyguard."
Ryuden could understand her trepidation at his presence as her bodyguard. He could tell Mitsuru was a strong, capable woman, so she most likely felt slighted that her father felt it necessary to assign her some protection.
"Understood. I'll do my best to not be a hindrance in your day to day life. In regards to SEES, I promise to pull my weight."
Mitsuru nodded and she looked at the files on her lap and began reading. Ryuden said nothing as he let her read in peace.
…
…
"You're younger than I thought," Mitsuru broke the silence after a few minutes had passed. Ryuden didn't reply, but looked to her to acknowledge he heard her. She took a deep breath, "I apologize if I came off as harsh before. Just because I disagree with my father's decision doesn't mean I should vent my frustrations out on you."
"It's alright ojou-sama, as I said before. When it comes to everyday things, just pretend I'm not even here, I won't interfere unless you prompt me, or if I see potential danger," Ryuden tried to reason.
Mitsuru sighed, "Even then, I suppose I'll have to adjust to your presence." The limo started slowing down as they approached their destination. "Looks like we're here." When they came to a stop, Ryuden stepped out first to stand guard as Mitsuru left after him. They were both well aware of why he exited first.
"Looks quaint," Ryuden commented.
"For the most part, it really is just a dorm. Only the fourth floor has equipment related to SEES activities," Mitsuru explained.
Ryuden hummed in acknowledgement, "Alright, lead the way ojou-sama."
Mitsuru walked up the stoop, and entered the dorm, Ryuden right behind her. The first floor of the dorm was, indeed, quaint. A living room with couches could be seen as soon as he entered. Past some partitions, he could also see a dining room table with the kitchen beyond that. On his left was a small desk area, the doors to the bathrooms, and another unmarked door. There was also a staircase to the upper floors.
"Oh hey, you're back," Ryuden heard a voice call out, as he saw someone descending the stairs. This boy looked about Mitsuru's age, with short silver hair and grey eyes. While was was wearing the summer uniform of Gekkoukan High, he also had a bright red vest over it. He also had some serious looking biceps for a guy his age.
"Yes, and I have quite a bit of news for you, but before that," Mitsuru motioned towards Ryuden, "Akihiko, this is Ryuden Yamamoto, he will be joining us in SEES."
Akihiko looked shocked, but it quickly turned to excitement, "Really?" He reached out to shake his hand, "I'm Akihiko Sanada, nice to finally get some new blood."
Ryuden gripped his hand and gave a very firm handshake, he correctly guessed that Akihiko was going to test his strength right off the bat, "I'm Ryuden Yamamoto, glad to be of service." The two men grinned as they measured each other with a simple handshake before separating.
"So, how'd you end up getting roped into all this?" Akihiko asked.
"Dark hour happened, shadow attacked me, and I survived purely thanks to my persona happening," Ryuden summarized.
Akihiko whistled, "Already fighting off shadows with your persona? That's pretty impressive."
"Well, I haven't exactly fought any shadows since then. And I don't really remember how it ended, I passed out after it happened," Ryuden elaborated, trying not to look embarrassed.
"Nah, memory loss and fatigue are normal the first time experiencing the dark hour. We'll help you get used to it in no time."
"Thank you, Sanada-san."
"You're welcome, though I have to ask," he eyed Ryuden up and down, his suit in clear contrast to the warm weather outside, "Why the full suit? You look like you just got out of a job interview."
Ryuden laughed, "Well, you're not too far off."
Akihiko looked at Mitsuru who looked like she'd rather not explain, "While Yamamoto-san is indeed a member of SEES, he's…also been assigned as my bodyguard."
The next threw Akihiko for a loop, "A bodyguard? For you of all people? I know you're rich and important and all, but doesn't your dad know how capable you are?"
Mitsuru sighed, "I tried explaining that to him. He seems dead set on assigning Yamamoto-san as my bodyguard. Both during the daytime, and during our nightly operations."
Akihiko scratched the back of his head, "No use trying to change the mind of someone like your dad. But how's he going to do his job at school? He gonna transfer into your classroom or something?."
She looked at Ryuden, "I imagine the most likely scenario is that Yamamoto-san will act as a sort of security guard when on school grounds."
"Security guard? Wait a minute, how old are you?" Akihiko suddenly asked.
"I'm 19," Ryuden said.
"Wait, seriously? I thought you were our age. Though I guess we're not too far apart," Akihiko admitted.
"Since you're both in Gekkoukan uniforms, I'm guessing it's safe to assume you're both around 16 years old?" Ryuden asked.
"I'm 16, yeah," said Akihiko, "but Mitsuru is 17. We're both 2nd years."
Ryuden nodded, "I see. I might be older than you, but you both have seniority over me in SEES. So please, don't treat me any differently than you would a comrade of the same age."
Akihiko smirked, "Sure, I can do that."
Mitsuru cleared her throat to gain their attention, "Now that you two have been introduced, perhaps you'd like a quick tour, Yamamoto-san?"
"Oh, yes please. That would be very helpful."
"In that case, I'm sure you can already see what we have here on the first floor. The kitchen has everything you need to make a meal, but it honestly doesn't get used very much," Mitsuru started.
"Yeah, I only use it once or twice a week myself," Akihiko admitted, "Mostly when I need to have a meal with some extra protein. We do keep some instant ramen around though, just in case."
Ryuden nodded, "I'm no master chef, but I know two or three meals to help break up the repetition of high school life if you'd like," he offered.
"I'll take you up on that," Akihiko was quick to say. Perhaps too quick.
"That does sound like a nice idea, we can discuss that more another time. Please, follow me," Mitsuru led them upstairs. The winding staircase felt like a nice touch design wise. At the top of the stairs there was a small couch and some chairs, as well as a few vending machines. "The second floor has the boys rooms, so that would be for you and Akihiko. Any questions?"
Ryuden shook his head, "Seems pretty straightforward."
Mitsuru nodded, and proceeded to another staircase going up. The third floor, upon quick inspection, looked just like the second floor, "The third floor has the girls rooms, which is only myself at the moment. It should be obvious, but dorm policy forbids boys from entering the girls rooms and vice versa. The reasons should be obvious."
'Hormones,' thought Ryuden while nodding, 'Glad I got through that phase of my life mostly unscathed.'
"Can I assume if someone screams for help that I'm permitted to enter?" Ryuden asked.
Mitsuru took a breath that almost sounded like a sigh, "Yes, in case of emergency you can enter one of the rooms. However, if you falsify such an emergency for any nefarious reason, there will be consequences."
Ryuden could tell she was serious, it looked like Akihiko even shivered in fear. "Understood. As I said, only in case of an emergency."
Mitsuru nodded, somewhat pleased with the answer, "Alright then, follow me to the fourth floor." The trio went up the stairs together. At the top, the landing for the fourth floor was much smaller than the previous two. There were also only two doorways, one was clearly marked "Rooftop, Do Not Enter," while the other was a set of double doors. "That's the door to the rooftop, again, do not use it unless it's an emergency." Ryuden nodded to confirm. "This last room in the command room," she opened the doors and walked in. One wall was taken up by a large monitor, with other smaller monitors around it, and a large computer console beneath. "We typically gather here at night prior to an operation, but we haven't been on one since…not in some time."
Ryuden heard the hesitation, but decided not to push it. In fact, now was the perfect time for a change of subject, "Since you're both persona users, mind if I ask you both a question?" Mitsuru and Akihiko both turned to face him. Mitsuru motioned for him to go ahead, "Does the name Velvet Room sound familiar at all? I had a dream about it around the time I got my persona. I wasn't sure if it was related, or purely coincidental."
The two senior persona users looked at each other "Not me, how about you Mitsuru?" said Akihiko.
She shook her head, "I'm afraid I haven't had any related dreams. Perhaps the dream was unrelated to your persona?"
Ryuden folded his arms, "Hmm, I guess so. Thanks though, I didn't have anyone else to ask until now." 'So it looks like my experience was unique. Can't really explain Velvet Room stuff without seeming crazy. Hell, I'M still not entirely sure what it is.'
"Understood, it must have been difficult not being able to discuss persona related issues with anyone else up until now," said Mitsuru.
"Not the easiest no, but I managed. It's actually quite a relief knowing I have two senior persona users to help me if I have any questions," Ryuden said confidently. He was admittedly nervous, but knew he couldn't show it. He had to remain stoic and put off an aura of strength, not just because of the persona stuff, but because he wanted Mitsuru to have confidence in him as her bodyguard.
"Yes, please don't hesitate to ask us if you have any questions," said Mitsuru, "Let's head back downstairs." At her instructions, the three of them headed back to the first floor.
"So," started Akihiko while they defended the last set of stairs, "You two have any plans for tonight?"
Despite the question being phrased in a way that could easily have been misconstrued, Mitsuru answered very professionally, "Our finals start on the 15th Akihiko, or have you forgotten?" Akihiko flinched, having either forgotten or chosen to forget that fact. "My plan is to study tonight, and every night in the upcoming week."
Akihiko looked to Ryuden, "How bout you Yamamoto? You clearly don't have to study."
"If what I was told is correct, my stuff should arrive before the end of the day, so I'll spend my night unpacking," Ryuden explained.
Akihiko nodded, but then realized something, "Hey, Mitsuru, do we have any mattress here for him?"
Mitsuru seemed to realize the same thing once he said it, "I…I don't know. We've never needed to look for an extra mattress."
The doors to the dorm room opened, "Hello everyone, good to see you all getting along," the persona trio turned to see the warming smile of Ikutsuki with a laptop and a briefcase.
"Hello chairman"
"Hello Ikutsuki-san,"
"Hey Ikutsuki-san,"
All three greeted the man differently.
"Yamamoto-kun, your stuff should be coming in momentarily. We had to make sure we remembered to pack everything requested," explained Ikutsuki.
"Chairman," Mitsuru spoke up, "Do we have a spare mattress anywhere for Yamamoto-san? I'd hate to have him sleep on the floor or couch because of such an oversight."
Ikutsuki smiled, "It's alright Kirijo-kun, we have a mattress already set up for him."
"We do, where?" She asked.
He pointed to the door near the restrooms, "Right there in the RA room. It makes sense, doesn't it? If he's acting as security, then he's the closest one to the entrance in case of emergency." Everyone turned to the door as he pointed to it.
"Of course, the Resident Advisors room," Mitsuru exclaimed.
The doors opened again, and two gentlemen dressed in suits walked in. Each holding a variety of suitcases or briefcases. They walked over to the divider near the TV, put down the luggage, then promptly turned around and left.
"Everything you packed from your time in the training program should be here Yamamoto-kun, including extra boxes from your home, and the weapons you requested. Well, all except one." Ikutsuki explained.
"I have a feeling I know which one," said Ryuden, "It's the sling, isn't it?"
Ikutsuki nodded, "That is correct. Every other weapon you requested, you used during your stay and showed more than enough proficiency in. The sling, however, was an odd request. They feel you have more of a chance of hurting yourself or a comrade with it than hitting an enemy. Honestly, it seems a little ridiculous if you ask me," he sighed.
"It's OK, I'll find a way to get it one way or another," said Ryuden, not letting the small setback get him down, "but you said the other weapons are in there, right?"
Ikutsuki repositioned his glasses, which was quite the feat since he was holding a laptop, "Yes, the spear, short sword, and shield are all there. I must admit, the shield is a smart choice for one in your position."
"Don't I know it," Ryuden agreed.
"In fact, one could say it ensured you 'shield' the deal,"
…
"Yeah, that one was a stretch, wasn't it? Forget I said anything," Ikutsuki handed a small briefcase to Mitsuru. "This is for Yamamoto-kun. Please show him sometime before tonight, as well as confirm his persona. It never hurts to be cautious."
Mitsuru took the briefcase and nodded, "Understood chairman, thank you for your continued support."
"You're welcome, and with that, I'll take my leave," Ikutsuki said before heading out the doors.
…
"So…does he always-"
"Yes, he's always trying to make bad puns," Akihiko said, exhausted.
"He's a valuable member of the Kirijo Group, but his jokes leave much to be desired," Mitsuru agreed.
"Right, I'll keep that in mind. So are either of you going to start studying now, or would you like to help me move all this to my room?" Ryuden asked.
"I'll give you a hand," Akihiko volunteered.
"I shall help as well," said Mitsuru, "The sooner we move it, the sooner you can unpack and get settled."
"Alright, thanks you two."
"Merci à vous," Mitsuru said, before realizing she said it.
"Was that French? It sounded French," asked Ryuden.
"It was, my apologies for slipping into it. Do you know any French, Yamamoto?" She asked in return.
"None whatsoever," Ryuden said while grabbing a suitcase with Akihiko. "English, however, I'm very good with."
"A very useful skill to have, especially in the world of business," said Mitsuru as she grabbed a long briefcase. She assumed it held the spear mentioned earlier.
"Yeah, I haven't used it in awhile so I hope I'm not too rusty," it was a real worry that he had. Ryuden did not want to forget the English he worked so hard to learn, especially due to who taught him.
"I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to use it again," she said.
"So am I," he admitted.
Ryuden spent most of the evening and night organizing his clothing and belongings. The bed was made, most of his clothes were put away, and his desk had a small monitor and a laptop on it.
'Alright, I finally have time to use this thing,' thought Ryuden as he booted up his laptop. 'I legit had no time to use this during the last month and it's been KILLING me.' After he waited for the laptop to fire up, he immediately opened up an internet browser. 'Alright, let's do this,' he typed into the browser.
Setanta of Ulster
After a second, he got his results. "Coo, what now?" He read the pronunciation a few times. "Koo cull in, Koo cull in, Cú Chulainn. It's Irish, and hard to pronounce."
"I take offense to that,"
The voice startled Ryuden, "Setanta", 'Sorry, but it really was tricky for me to pronounce. Now please let me read this."
"If you insist,"
Ryuden was fortunate, there was a Wikipedia entry available for him to read. Accuracy be damned, it was better than nothing.
Several minutes later…
Ryuden had finished reading the article, and what he read had astounded him. For starters Setanta was the birth name of who would eventually be Cú Chulainn, an Irish folk hero and demigod. According to what he read, he had accomplished some feats that were utterly insane, but that checked out with what he remembered from other mythology figures…was the voice of his persona really THIS Setanta? This Cú Chulainn?...one way to find out.
'Hey Setanta,'
"I am here, what is it?"
'I'm assuming you know what I just read, is this really you? Are you really this Cú Chulainn guy? Cause he's just a legend here on Earth, he didn't actually exist.'
"Hmm, in short, yes, I am Cú Chulainn." Ryuden was a bit shocked from the revelation, but it was far from the strangest thing he'd seen and heard in the last month.
'Do you have a lengthier explanation? Cause it sounds like you might.'
"Nothing so concrete, but I have a theory if nothing else," Ryuden remained silent as Setanta spoke, "Here in your world, I am nothing but a myth, a character in a story. However, it's possible that in some world, in some other time, I existed as a real person. We were able to forge a contract thanks to that Igor fellow, but I know naught else. I know my memories aren't fake. I remember fighting in the ford's of Ulster, protecting my countrymen as they were disabled from labor pangs."
'Labor pangs? Wait, I think I just read something about that.'
"My countrymen were affected by a curse that put them through the pains of labor for multiple days. It's a long story. Perhaps, if you prefer, I can regale you with some stories of my adventures."
'That actually sounds amazing. I think the more I know about you, the better I'll be able to fight. I DO have your strength and speed after all.'
There was a knock on his door.
"One moment," Ryuden called out, 'We'll continue this conversation later.'
"Understood," Said Setanta.
Ryuden opened the door to see Mitsuru holding the briefcase from earlier.
"Good evening Yamamoto-san, I know it's getting late, but do you have some time?"
"Of course, ojou-sama, how can I help?"
She motioned for him to follow her, which he did. She led him to the dining room table, and placed the briefcase on it.
"Now that you're a part of SEES, you're going to need these," she opened up the briefcase which contained two items. The first was a red armband that had "SEES" written on it. The other object looked like a gun. "There's no need to panic, that's not a real gun." At her words Ryuden picked up the "not gun". He held it in hard hands and examined it. It was of very fine quality, Ryuden wasn't a gun expert, but even he could tell it was a beautiful piece of equipment. Although, for something NOT a gun, it certainly looked and felt like it.
"So what is this, then?" He asked.
"This is an evoker. It's made to look and sound exactly like a real gun when 'fired'," she emphasized the word fired. "The point is to induce the fear of near death in a persona user, making it so that they can summon their persona quickly and efficiently."
He heard what she said, but wasn't too sure he liked what she was implying, "Hold on, are you implying the point of this, evoker, is to use it on myself." Mitsuru silently nodded. Suddenly, the evoker felt much heavier in his hand.
"Get your gear together, we're going to have you show us what you're capable of tonight."
"Tonight? How long do I have to prepare?"
"About one hour," was her reply.
Ryuden looked over towards his bed where an alarm clock sat. The clock said 10:53pm.
"I see. I'll be tested during the dark hour."
"Correct. Do whatever you need to, then meet us on the fourth floor before midnight," said Mitsuru.
"Understood, I'll be upstairs shortly."
Mitsuru nodded before departing. Ryuden went back into his room, briefcase in hand. Once inside he took a deep breath.
'This test could make or break my stay here.' He realized he was still wearing most of his suit, only the jacket had been removed while unpacking everything. 'This'll do fine. Now where are those straps?' He dug around and found what he was looking for. Straps that went around his chest and back, the purpose was to hold his spear and shield behind his back when not in use. He also had a strap go around his waist to hold up his sword. Now, he was given yet another strap, this time for his evoker. "Any more straps and they'll think I'm into bdsm," he said, making a joke to keep his spirits up. 'Wonder if they'll let me warm up? That'd be nice' He thought to himself as he got all his gear on. Eventually, he was all set. 'Still got plenty of time, but I don't think it'll hurt to head up early.'
Ryuden left his room, and went up to the fourth floor. Mitsuru, who was sitting at the computer, looked shocked to see him so early.
"I thought you'd take longer getting ready," she admitted.
"Having done this a couple times a day for multiple days, it doesn't take as long as it used to," he said with a smile.
Mitsuru hummed, "May I ask you something Yamamoto-san?"
"Of course ojou-sama."
"While I am indeed the Kirijo heiress, there are many parts of the business I am still unfamiliar with. This training program the chairman mentioned, what is it?" She asked, her aura of leadership was strong.
Ryuden couldn't sit down with his gear on, so he chose to lean forward onto the back of the couch, "As far as I'm aware, it seems like it was made to further improve the efficiency and skills of bodyguards. I was definitely too young to be there. I have a feeling the only reason I was placed in there was due to me being a persona user."
"Hmm, persona users do have an enhanced degree of strength and endurance. Do you think you would have been able to get through it if you were not a persona user?" She asked.
"I'll be honest, I doubt it. Prior to me becoming a persona user, I wasn't the strongest guy around. I wouldn't call myself a weakling, but I think I was as strong as your average Japanese citizen."
"And what about now? How strong do you feel now?"
Ryuden remained silent for a moment. Should he reveal his true strength, or should he keep it under wraps for now? What if Mitsuru and Akihiko were just as strong, and he was overthrowing this? He wasn't sure yet, so he'd play it safe for now.
"I have no worries in terms of my own strength, but I would like to test myself against a shadow or two to ensure I've steeled my resolve," said Ryuden.
Mitsuru nodded, then turned back to face the computer again. Ryuden decided to simply watch and observe.
…
…
Eventually Akihiko also entered, greeted the two, and sat on the couch.
…
…
"Alright, it's just about time. Let's proceed outside," the three proceeded to head out to the front porch.
…

11:59:58
11:59:59

Dark Hour
…
Ryuden had seen the dark hour a number of times since awakening his persona. However, those times had been while in the training program, so he didn't go outside or explore during those times. Honestly, he'd find any excuse he could to prevent interacting with people as it struck midnight. Talking with someone, only for them to turn into a coffin, forcing him to wait an hour to resume a conversation was the worst feeling imaginable. Then there was that giant tower…he didn't know what it was, but something about it…made him hate it.
"Well, you're clearly used to the environment," Akihiko commented from the porch steps he and Mitsuru were standing on.
"Yeah, I am now. Wasn't my first time. That was an experience I'd rather not relive," said Ryuden, standing in the middle of the road.
"Alright Yamamoto-san, the goal for tonight is simple, we want you to summon your persona, as well as show off any fighting skills you have," Mitsuru explained.
Ryuden took out his evoker, and took a deep breath. 'No other option. When it's time to fight, the shadows won't hesitate to kill. It's do or die,' he steeled himself.
Both Mitsuru and Akihiko could see Ryudens facial features harden with resolve, and continued to watch with interest.
He took the gun in his left hand. His decision was to use his non-dominant hand so he wouldn't have to put away his weapon. In one swift movement, he pointed the gun to the side of his head.
"Come forth, Setanta!"
*BANG!*
In a bright flash, Setanta appeared before him, delivering fast strikes with his spear against a nonexistent opponent. After completing the strikes, Setanta faded away. Ryuden sighed in relief as he put his evoker away.
"Look at that, barely any hesitation. Remind you of someone?" Akihiko commented. Mitsuru declined to comment.
Ryuden took out his spear and his shield. The shield was circular, and very large. As long as the attack was physical, chances are he could block the attack. Now, however, he faced a dilemma. The bulk of the shield made it difficult for him to reach and use his evoker. Especially since it almost overlapped with his sword straps.
'His layout is unorganized. He most likely didn't account for having to use the evoker with his current setup,' Mitsuru thought to herself while watching him.
"I'm going to have to rethink this layout," Ryuden said aloud, "My evoker is not in an easy to reach spot when using my shield."
"Are you right handed or left?" Akihiko asked.
"I'm right handed," Ryuden answered.
"Then why are you using the evoker with your left hand?" Asked Akihiko.
"I don't want to put down my weapon under any circumstance," said Ryuden, "I do know how to fight unarmed, but I'd rather not chance it when shadows can summon fire and explosions out of nowhere."
"Then we'll take some time another night to find a setup that works for you," Mitsuru said.
"Thank you ojou-sama," Ryuden said gratefully.
Akihiko looked like he was trying not to laugh, but Mitsuru didn't react.
"Akihiko, we're going to find a shadow for Yamamoto-san to fight. I'll return to the command room to provide support," she said before swiftly entering the dorm.
"Got it," Akihiko descended the stairs and went to Ryuden. "You heard her, let's go."
"H-hold on," Ryuden interjected, "my job is to protect Kirijo-san, I can't just leave her here unprotected."
"She's fine, she's more than capable of handling a shadow if one shows up. Besides, Mitsuru can sense if one is coming, and let us know if there's trouble."
Ryuden didn't quite like it, but had a feeling Mitsuru would override his opinion on the matter.
"Alright, if I must," Ryuden admitted defeat, and followed Akihiko.
They walked to the end of the block when a voice spoke.
"Akihiko, Yamamoto-san, can you both hear me?" Mitsuru's voice cut into his head similarly to how Setanta did when he spoke, yet he also heard radio static.
Akihiko pulled out a small radio, "Yeah, loud and clear."
"Good. We're in luck tonight. There's a shadow only three blocks away. Continue on for two blocks, then make a left. Yamamoto-san, your job is to eliminate the shadow. Akihiko, you are only to intervene if there's trouble."
"Got it, I'm sure he'll be fine," Akihiko said dismissively before sprinting ahead. Ryuden ran after him and quickly caught up. When he caught up, Akihiko smirked. "You're pretty fast, got the strength to back it up?"
Ryuden nodded, "Watch me." Ryuden began to run ahead of Akihiko who was impressed by his sudden burst of speed. Two blocks were traversed, and they made a left. The shadow could be seen at the end of the street. It was just like the one that hunted Ryuden a month ago.
"All you, Yamamoto," Akihiko said, falling back.
"Payback time," Ryuden said aloud. He charged towards the shadow but stopped just short of it. "Hey ugly!" He shouted to gain the things attention.
ROOOAAAAA!
It worked.
The shadow came charging at him, just like the one from a month before. Only this time, Ryuden was trained. He was stronger. He was powerful.
The shadow swung with its claws. Ryuden swatted the shadow's arms off to the side with his shield. With one swift strike, Ryuden forced his spear into the shadows mask, causing the mask to break, and the whole shadow to melt into black ooze. It almost felt anticlimactic.
"Congratulations on your first kill, Ryuden," Setanta spoke to him. Ryuden simply hummed in reply.
"Well, that sure was quick. Guess we had nothing to worry about. You get all that Mitsuru?" Asked Akihiko.
"I did. Job well done Yamamoto-san. You passed with flying colors. Both of you can come back now. I didn't want this to be anything more than a test for Yamamoto-san."
Akihiko tsked, it was clear he wanted to stay out, "Alright, hear you loud and clear." The two began walking back.
"How's she able to do that Sanada-san?" Ryuden asked, "Is it her personas power?"
Akihiko nodded, "Yeah, one of them, it gives her some limited clairvoyant-like powers. She uses some special equipment to extend its reach. That said, she'll be one of the first to tell you that her persona is more geared towards combat."
"I see, I hope to see both her and your personas soon," Ryuden said as they approached the dorm.
"Give it time, you will eventually," said Akihiko. The two completed their journey back, and entered the dorm. Mitsuru was waiting for them in the living room.
"Great showing Yamamoto-san. You've shown no hesitation when it comes to calling your persona, and you clearly have the strength to fight as well." She extended her right hand, "I'd like to officially welcome you to SEES."
"The pleasure is all mine, ojou-sama," Ryuden said, returning the handshake.
July 12th 2008
Ryuden slept very well that night. Having to wake up early was not his idea of fun, but duty called. He got himself together, had his breakfast and tea (which was caffeinated), and was ready to escort Mitsuru to Gekkoukan.
Currently, the two of them were on the train headed for the High School. Both had to stand due to the lack of available seats. Ryuden leaned over to talk to her without having to shout.
"Ojou-sama, would you prefer me to walk closer or at a distance? I know how quick gossip can spread at school."
Mitsuru shook her head, "You're wearing a full suit and look the part of a bodyguard. Most people should assume you work for me. That said, Gossip and rumors abound at school. I'm sure some people will make up whatever story suits them."
"Alright then, I'll stick close," said Ryuden.
The rest of their ride was silent.
…
Walking the path towards Gekkoukan High School felt like a mixed bag for Ryuden. Lots of good memories, a couple rough ones, but the memory of being called home the day his father passed…
Ryuden shook his head. Now wasn't the time to be distracted, he had a job to do. Some of the students walking towards the school looked half asleep, others were talking with their friends. Regardless of what they were doing, a good portion of them stopped when he and Mitsuru walked by. Mitsuru walked confidently, as if she didn't even notice the people looking their way. Ryuden did see them, but only as far as looking for signs of anything suspicious. Granted, he didn't think any of these students would be so bold or stupid as to try something nefarious on THE Mitsuru Kirijo. Though he felt good knowing his presence might have helped to deter such thoughts from even crossing their minds.
When they reached the doors to the school entrance, a teacher called out, "Kirijo-san, a moment please." The teacher was male, and Ryuden recognized him as Mr. Ekoda. Not one of his favorite teachers, he must admit, but Ekoda was always straightforward with him. Ryuden could appreciate it when someone "cut out the bullshit." The duo approached the teacher.
"Good morning, Ekoda-sensei, how can I help," Mitsuru greeted with a bow.
"The staff has been informed about the situation with your bodyguard," he said, "as such, we've made sure to-" he broke off when he looked at Ryuden, "Yamamoto? Is that you?" He asked.
Ryuden offered his own bow, "Good morning sensei, been a few years, hasn't it?"
"My goodness it has. I always worried about you when you left abruptly, but look at you now. Are you the bodyguard for Kirijo-san?" Asked Ekoda.
Nodding, he replied, "Yes sensei, I'm serving as her bodyguard moving forward."
Ekoda smiled, "Honestly, that makes my job a bit easier. You still remember your way around the school, right?"
"Like the back of my hand," Ryuden joked.
"Very good. In that case, all you need to know is that the staff has been informed of your position. When on school grounds you'll be like an interim security guard. You can wander the halls as need be, but please don't interrupt any of the classes unless there's an emergency."
"Understood, I didn't plan on causing any disturbances. Although, can I make one request?" Ekoda nodded, "Is it possible for me to use the school library?"
Both Ekoda and Mitsuru were intrigued by his request. Ekoda spoke first, "I'm sure we could arrange that. I'll send a message to the staff and students to let you use the facilities."
"Thank you very much, sensei," Ryuden bowed again.
"You're welcome. Now unless there's anything else, I have to go get ready for class," Ekoda went into the building, leaving the two persona users.
Mitsuru looked at Ryuden curiously, "Is there a particular reason you wish to use the library?"
"Believe it or not, I have some reading I want to do," Ryuden said honestly.
Mitsuru could sense he was telling the truth, "Really? What kind of reading?"
Ryuden smiled, "At the moment, mythology."
"I see. To each their own, I suppose," the topic of mythology wasn't of particular interest to her.
"Shall I escort you to class, ojou-sama?"
She shook her head, "No thank you, this should be far enough. I have a student council meeting after school, as well as some other errands, so I'll be late. You can meet me here around 4:30."
"Understood, I shall be here at that time, ojou-sama."
"Thank you, Yamamoto-san," Mitsuru departed for her classroom.
'Alright, I'll check in at the teachers lounge real quick, then it's off to the library.'
Ryuden was in the library. As class was in session, he was the ONLY one in the library. After a quick search about Setanta on one of the school computers, he was now looking for one book in particular.
"It should be here in the 200s, where are you book?... ah, there it is. Aaaaand again with the things I can't pronounce. Ta, tai, tain, bo coo, cul, whatever, let's give this a read."
10 Minutes Later
…
…
…
'Hey, Setanta?'
"Yes, Ryuden?"
'What the hell is wrong with the Irish language?!' Ryuden yelled in his thoughts.
"Excuse me?!" Setanta was clearly caught off guard.
'Irish as a language is weird as hell! If this book didn't have a pronunciation guide, I'd be completely screwed!'
"It is not as difficult as you make it out to be, Ryuden," Setanta defended.
'Oh it's no, is it? Just look at this guide:
B = V
C = g OR k
Ch is guttural like GERMAN
D = dh
and to contrast that, T = D
M = V, oh but there are EXCEPTIONS to that rule. This is just for consonants, and I'm not even done. Need I go on?!'
"..."
'...'
"...OK, you've proven your point. Perhaps it IS a hard language for those not raised in it."
'Speaking of, how do we understand each other now? I'm talking, well, thinking in Japanese. Do you know it, or are you somehow talking in Irish, but I hear it in Japanese?' Ryuden asked.
"I am indeed speaking to you in my native tongue. As part of our pact, we are one with each other, perhaps this allows us to understand each other?"
'I won't question it any further than that, but I'm grateful for it.'
"You know, I could just TELL you what's in the book. I WAS there, after all."
'You could, and I do want to hear you talk about your adventures, but if I read it I have a better chance of retaining the information. I can also compare and contrast if what I'm reading differs from what you remember. That, and I'd like something to do when I'm sitting around waiting for classes to end. Walking the halls will get old real quick.'
"Alright, I respect your decision, and will leave you to it."
'Thank you Setanta,' Ryuden took a deep breath.
"Alright Táin Bó Cuailnge, bring it on…"
Seriously, Irish pronunciations are no joke. Every time a name is said, it's a battle to figure out how to actually say it. Therefore, I decided to make a joke about it. While I would normally love to recommend people read The Tain, it's admittedly a tough read. Good stuff though. If you guys don't read it, no worries, it's not required to enjoy this story.
