Stephanie lets Carl hypnotise her to recover the memories. She pushes past her instinctive reaction to break from the hypnotherapy. The pain feels fresh. She screams as the realistic memories float to the surface. Stephanie feels the pain between her legs. It's smothering her. She gasps for air as the pain intensifies to an unbearable level. Her scream tears through the air. Carl focuses on keeping Stephanie from losing her mind.

Diesel pops into the room. Carl expects his sudden appearance and orders, "Don't talk. She's fighting me."

"I'm here to help. Tell me what to do," Diesel replies. He will do anything to protect Stephanie. She's been his best friend since her birth. Diesel's heart is heavy as the pain on her face reminds him of leaving her behind. Stephanie is a few years younger than Diesel, and she felt devastated when he had to say goodbye once he hit puberty. Diesel has many regrets. He's trying to make up for everything. She is the light in his life. Stephanie gives him the strength to do his job. Whenever he needs her help, she's immediately available to help him. Diesel doesn't deserve to have Stephanie as his friend.

"Stop those negative thoughts. Stephanie trusts you. Hold her hand," Carl says. Diesel pulls his wavy blond hair into a ponytail before taking Stephanie's hand. He strokes his fingers across her knuckles and waits for her heart rate to slow. Stephanie relaxes as the pleasant aroma of cinnamon surrounds her. She associates the scent with Diesel. They share a special connection from their childhood years. She loves him, but they can't be more than friends. The Unmentionable Committee forbids two Unmentionables from dating, marrying or having children. These rules keep the Unmentionable powers tame and humankind safe.

Stephanie's reflexive instincts subside, and she remembers everything. Someone is returning the thoughts inside her mind. The pain of childbirth is prevalent. She's in a psychiatric ward in a Chicago hospital. Her son cries as someone injects her arm with a drug. Stephanie sees Grandpa Plum in the room, holding her newborn son. "I have to take him," he sadly says. She's unable to reply since the drug is taking effect. Stephanie disappears into the dark abyss.

Suddenly, she gasps when Carl and Diesel enter her thoughts. They're asking her to focus, begging her to climb out of the darkness to find the man responsible for impregnating Stephanie. She needs to remember how it began. The memories are painful. Stephanie fights against the pain. "Please, Stephanie," Diesel begs. "I'm giving everything I can to help."

Carl and Diesel hope Stephanie recalls a description of the man so they can capture him after all these years. He's notorious for impregnating female Unmentionables to create an heir more potent than all the other Unmentionables alive. Several Unmentionable children die from organ failure. The investigation into the case indicates they are siblings with the same father but different mothers. It's a waste of life and abilities. The committee is hoping to prevent more children from dying because of that man's desire to live forever.

With Carl's guidance and Diesel's unwavering comfort, Stephanie forces her mind back in time. She vaguely remembers someone grabbing her in Newark two years after Morelli took her virginity. The man sexually assaults her and injects her with something to transport her to another location. He mentions having a child with his DNA to harvest his organs. Stephanie vomits on his shoes. She's helpless against the drugs. He bends to lift her from the ground when Carl Costanza finds her. The man with black hair, blue eyes and an unusual scar on his neck leaves, needing to escape before others like her arrive. How did Carl find her?

"Don't fight it, Stephanie. Let the memory flood your mind," Carl says. He wants Stephanie to remember he is Unmentionable.

Carl's first assignment upon finishing his training is protecting Stephanie; he admonishes himself as he remembers arriving nearly too late to save her from the attack. Acclimatising to his developing powers prevents him from reacting fast enough. Knowing that the dangerous man is in the area, Carl takes Stephanie to the hospital in Chicago.

They admit her into the psychiatric ward when her powers explode from her. The doctor has no other options besides sedating her using a concoction made by the Unmentionable doctor. It's the only way to keep her from harming others. A few weeks later, during a routine blood test, they detect her pregnancy and have to use a safer method of sedating her. Aborting the baby isn't possible. Something forms to protect the embryo from uterine evacuation. Carl sees Diesel arriving to use his abilities to take away Stephanie's powers. Removing the mother's powers doesn't release the protection around the uterus. Its only benefit was protecting Stephanie from harming others entering her room.

"I never wanted to take away part of your powers," Diesel whispers. "It was necessary to protect you from going insane. At the time, I didn't know it would erase your memories."

Stephanie imagines Diesel's deep-set brown eyes gazing into her face, willing her to recall the memories without feeling the pain. Diesel has the ability to permanently take away her powers. One day, it will become inevitable. Until then, Stephanie must remember to protect her son, Giuseppe.

Opening her eyes, Stephanie says, "If you didn't, I would have died, and the doctors would have kept my heart pumping for Giuseppe. I understand, Diesel. Remembering childbirth was unpleasant, but it's part of the memories and necessary to remember how I arrived at the hospital."

He touches her forehead with his hand. Stephanie feels the heat of her powers returning. She hopes Giuseppe has someone to help him control his powers. There's a reason for Unmentionable's inability to date and procreate. They create children with uncontrollable powers. The only way to handle those children is to remove their powers, pushing them into multi-organ failure.

"It's inevitable," Stephanie sighs. She sees it unfolding before her eyes. Diesel wipes the tear slipping down her cheek.

"I'm sorry," Diesel whispers.

"Thank you for charging the phone in my car," Stephanie says.

"Your old one wouldn't charge. I gave you a new burner phone but reused the SIM card," Diesel explains. "I'm glad I replaced it yesterday."

"You guys always have my back. I can't thank you enough for keeping me sane and safe," Stephanie cries, turning away from Diesel so he can't read the emotion in her eyes.

Diesel is cautious and gentle as he uses his fingers to coax Stephanie to look into his eyes. "Do you remember the man?" Diesel asks.

She looks into his brown eyes. Diesel's love for Stephanie shines through, giving her the courage to answer, "Yes."
