Chapter 1
"Oonah!"
Oonah sat up and craned her neck around the branch of the tree she was sitting on.
"Oonah, dinner's ready. Come on and have some with me!"
Oonah sighed, but she couldn't help but smile at her little sister, who was almost an exact copy of herself, just smaller. Tara was glancing up at Oonah with her little brown hands clasped expectantly, as her beads that Oonah had carefully weaved into Tara's braids to match her own glistened in the sun. In a swift movement, Oonah lept from her tree and landed softly on the ground, ruffling her sister's hair as they made their way towards their house. It was a good sized muggle home, but it could get a little cramped and loud with six people living there. Oonah quickly washed her hands and slipped into her seat at the table; her three sisters were already there, as were her parents.
"Our letters from Hogwarts will come any day now, mum," Onnah's oldest sister Kisha was saying. "I do hope they'll make me the head girl."
"I'm sure they will, darling," Raza assured her daughter. "You're the best candidate from Gryffindor and it's about time they chose someone from your house."
Kisha tossed her long, wavy brown hair over her shoulder.
"And what about you, Bia? I don't think you'll be chosen as Hufflepuff prefect next year with the way things are going for you," Kisha said, pursing her lips and frowning at her younger sister as if Bia was a small child who had misbehaved.
"Cut it out, Kish, it's not like I'm failing my classes," Bia said, scowling. "So what's so wrong with having a little fun? Why, I wouldn't be surprised if you turned out to be a stuck up br-"
Alright, girls, cut it out," Hadan said sternly, banging his fist on the table. He shook his head as he stared warningly at Bia. She really was a complete opposite of him. Hadan had always been a stickler for the rules, working his way up in the Ministry of Magic. He hoped to one day become the Minister of Magic. And the only thing Bia had inherited from him was his super curly and short hair. But Bia did have a way with people, he had to give her that.
"Daddy," a sweet voice called to Hadan, drawing him out of his thoughts.
"Yes, sweetie?" Hadan replied, turning his gaze to Tara.
"Is Oonah gonna get a letter?"
Oonah slumped in her seat and stared at her mashed potatoes.
"I don't know, darling," Hadan said through a sigh. "But hey, even if Oonah turns out to be a squib, we still have five wizards and witches in the family, right? And that's more than enough to drain Gringotts of our galleons!"
Bia laughed, Raza raised her eyebrows, a faint grin playing on her lips, and Kisha gave Oonah the same patronizing look she had given Bia. Oonah didn't see her or Tara, who was looking at her big sister with concern plastered on her little face, because Oonah was intently studying the tulip engravings along the edge of her plate.
"Now Kisha," Raza said. "As you know, this is your most important year at Hogwarts."
"I thought that was the fifth year, the one with the O.W.L.s," Bia interrupted.
"They're equally important," Hadan clarified. He turned to his wife and said sweetly, "Continue darling."
"Kisha, we are all very proud of you for all the work you have done the past six years. We want you to know that no matter how many N.E.W.T.s you get, we will always be proud of you and I'm sure you'll have a successful career in the ministry, just like your father and I."
"The wizard doesn't fall far from the wand," Hadan said with a grin.
"Dad, stop doing that," Bia complained. "It doesn't make sense, it's not funny."
"I think it's funny," Hadan shrugged.
"Why would the wizard fall?" Tara asked. "Did someone push them?"
"Aaaand, my point stands," Bia said, smirking at her youngest sister.
Oonah took one last bite of potato and got up to clear her plate.
"Where are you going?" Tara asked.
"Outside," Oonah replied. As she creaked open the backdoor, a warm breeze slid over her face. Oonah walked into her family's small yard and made her way to a familiar oak tree. It was Oonah's favorite place to be, even though she finally had her own room. The branches hugged Oonah and the leaves tickled her face as she climbed to the top and snuggled into the smooth, comforting branches. The fragrance of wood and oak wafted pleasantly into Oonah's nose and she felt her body relax. In her tree, it didn't matter if she was a squib, or a witch, or even a normal muggle. Oonah could just enjoy nature and relax and not think about witches or Hogwarts or owls or anything magical at all.
Suddenly, there was a loud rustle of flapping wings and a hoot, as four owls proceeded to drop from the sky, heading straight for Oonah's house. Oonah suddenly understood the saying of "butterflies in your stomach" as her's flopped, knowing that these owls contained her entire future and fate. Oonah strained her eyes against the sun and counted for owls. Her parents always got one each from the ministry, and then there was one for Bia and one-
"For Kisha," Oonah muttered, feeling her heart drop. Oonah's eyes filled with tears. "It isn't fair!" Oonah cried, closing her eyes. "Why do all my sister's get magic while I have to be a muggle! Why couldn't I just have two specks of magic in me? I'll never hear the end of this! I'll never belong to my family! Everything will end up being my fault and I-"
Onnah stopped abruptly, for she could have sworn she felt something pecking at her face. She opened her eyes and gasped, her eyes growing wider than her open mouth. Perched in front of Oonah, looking rather flustered and impatient, was a rather ugly gray owl. It stuck out its leg, hooting irritably, and to Oonah's amazement, the envelope bore the Hogwart's seal and Oonah's name! Oonah squealed, barely daring to believe her eyes. She tore open the letter, and quickly scanned it.
To: Miss Oonah Starport
The Oak Tree
9028, Lime Street,
London
Dear Miss Starport,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
There was more, but Oonah just looked up in awe, feeling as if she had suddenly sprouted wings.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" Oonah called out to the departing owl. She leapt from the tree and ran into her house at full speed, nearly colliding with Tara.
"Did you get in?" Tara asked excitedly.
"Yes!" Oonah said, waving her letter, her grin threatened to split her face.
Tara threw herself onto her sister, wrapping her arms around Oonah's stomach.
"I knew you could do it," she squealed.
"Have you gotten accepted?" Bia asked, frowning at her sister's who were squished in the doorway.
"Yes! Yes!" Oonah cried, swinging Tara around by the arms.
"Nice," Bia said, smiling. "Partners in crime?"
"Hey, I don't want to get in trouble already, I just got in!" Onnah said, laughing.
"Partners in fun then?" Bia stuck out her hand and Oonah shook it. Bia pulled her little sisters into a hug.
"A full family of wizards," Bia said. "Congrats, sis!"
"There's no letter for me today," the girls heard their mother say from the kitchen.
"It'll come soon, I'm sure," Hadan assured her. "Hi, girls!"
"Hey dad," Bia said excitedly. "Guess what? Oonah, tell him!"
"I got into Hogwarts!" Oonah cried, waving the letter in her father's face.
"Really? Oonah, I'm so proud of you," Hadan beamed. "I knew you had some magic in you, eh? You're my daughter after all!"
"Whether she's our daughter or some half blood child, she may still very well have been a squib," Raza said, walking up to her family. "Why do you all have to stand in the doorway?"
The five of them shuffled into the house and made their way to the living room. Next to an old dusty bookshelf was a tan and comfortable sofa. Bia sat down on the end and stuck her feet out. Tara and Oonah sat on Bia's feet until she reluctantly moved them. Hadan sat next to Oonah on the other side of the couch and placed a proud hand on her shoulder. Raza sat in an armchair parallel to them.
"Well?" Raza asked. "Did you receive a letter?"
"I did," Oonah said, smiling.
"Very good," Raza said, with a satisfied nod. "I'm very proud of you, Oonah."
Oonah sat up straighter. These words, so rarely said to her, were music to Oonah's ears.
"You've got a real potential, Oonah," Hadan told her.
"Ya, a real potential," Bia grinned, "to be my partner in, Ahem, fun."
"I love you!" Tara said, and hugged Oonah.
Oonah looked around at her family; all beaming at her, all celebrating Oonah. Oonah felt warmth rise in her chest. Finally, for the first time in her 10 years on earth, Oonah knew she belonged.
