Episode 12: Vampire Discussions

*The next morning...*

"Lisa Paler... is a vampire?!" Noire said in disbelief, sitting at the table in the Basilicom's main conference room with Brian Duane, Erika, Uni, and Steamax. "Well, that explains a few things from the last case..."

"Yes, and it also explains why Aviel Kyokoku and AB decided to take over Paler Sunscreen," Brian added. "According to Miss Erika here, the description of Kyokoku that Mrs. Paler described when he and AB first appeared to her matches perfectly with a Digimon called Myotismon..."

"That's right. He's an Ultimate-level, and one of the stronger ones," Erika affirmed. "Not quite on the level of Lilithmon, but definitely not one to be underestimated."

"According to Mrs. Paler, they showed up out of nowhere one day and attacked her husband, draining him of blood, but not to the point of death. She was forced to submit in order to preserve Vlad's life..." Brian said.

"So what are their plans with that sunscreen business anyway?" Noire inquired next.

"I can answer that," Steamax spoke up. "It seems that Kyokoku has plans to aggressively expand the business into the other nations, and has begun making political contributions to governors of the rural provinces. My guess is that he intends to make Paler Sunscreen into a mega-conglomerate with enough money to control the strings of all local governments in Gamindustri, effectively running the world from behind the scenes..."

"A corrupt corporatocracy, huh?" Noire mused. "That's actually pretty clever. If you're an inhuman monster wishing to rule the world, then hide behind humans whose purse strings you control..."

"Which is why we gotta nip this guy in the bud now!" Uni asserted. "Oh, and we need to find where Vlad Paler is being held... did you find anything about that, Steamax?"

The cyborg ninja shook his head. "I'm sorry, Lady Uni. All I found was the cover story that he's out sick and that Kyokoku has assumed executive operations until he's better. They're likely keeping him close by... I would suggest searching around the office that Kyokoku currently occupies, Mr. Paler is likely around there."

"That's going to make things tricky. That AB found me almost immediately after Mrs. Paler let me in," Brian recounted. "And the only reason Steamax was able to sneak in was because she was preoccupied with going after me and Mrs. Paler..."

"What's the deal with that woman, anyway?" Noire interrupted. "Erika doesn't think she's a Digimon, so what is she?"

"According to Mrs. Paler, she called herself a shinso vampire- a True Ancestor, who doesn't need to drink blood to sustain herself," Brian recounted. "And she apparently claimed to have the power to manipulate nature itself... and given the lightning bolt that woman threw at us, I'm inclined to believe her."

"Sounds like she might be even more dangerous than Myotismon," Uni noted grimly. "Still, she's not invincible... she was clearly in pain after Batman rammed his car into her, and I managed to knock her down afterward with a shot from my rifle. But she wasn't dead by a long shot..."

"Let me state for the record that I never would have done that if Mrs. Paler hadn't insisted on it," Brian interjected.

"Because Batman's one rule is to never kill another human being," Noire nodded. "All right, is there anything else?"

"I managed to capture one of the Anklyomon that was sent after us," Erika said, taking out her mobile device. "He's in forced stasis right now, but I can link my phone up to the projector here so we can question him."

"All right, do it," Noire assented. So Erika tapped on her phone a bit, a holo-screen soon popping up showing the Digimon in question, the cage around it soon vanishing. Erika then made one final tap, which caused the Anklyomon to jerk up and look around, like it had just woken up from a long nap.

"Ah, wha, huh? Where am I?" the Digimon said in a male voice. He then looked 'out' of the screen, doing a double-take. "Whoa! Are these... humans?!"

"Yes, we're human," Noire responded. "I am Noire, CPU and ruler of this nation. Do you know why you're here?"

"Uh, no idea," Anklyomon shook his head.

"You and your brethren tried to run my car off the road last night," Brain Duane said bluntly. "Now do you remember?"

"Um... what's a 'car'?" the Digimon said in utter confusion. "I have no idea what you're talking about..."

"...I don't think he's lying," Erika observed. "Anklyomon, what's the last thing that you do remember?"

"Uh... oh yeah! Me and my fellow Anklyomon were foraging in the forest for food! And then this really weird Digimon suddenly came down from the sky... they said something I didn't really understand, then sent a bunch of bats at us... that's the last thing I remember."

"What did this weird Digimon look like?" Erika pressed. "Did it look human?"

"A little bit... he was wearin' dark clothing and a cape, and had a red mask over his eyes, and orange hair on top of his head..."

"Myotismon," Erika affirmed. "It seems that he brainwashed you and your brothers, and brought you with him to this world, to serve as his enforcers..."

"Wait, really?!" Anklyomon gasped. "Hey, speaking of which, where are my brothers, anyway?"

The group exchanged looks. "Um, we had to delete them in self-defense," Uni admitted. "But you were only knocked out, so Erika here captured you instead."

"What?! They're... they're dead?!" the Digimon cried in disbelief... which soon turned to anger as he slammed his mace tail into the floor multiple times. "Stupid Myotismon! Why'd he have to brainwash us and get my brothers killed...?! Why us?!"

"Most likely because of your hards shells and club tails," Steamax spoke up.

"Huh? Who said that?" Ankylomon looked around.

"Just a friend of mine, who's good at stealth," Uni answered. "Are you sure you don't remember anything else?"

"No... if I did, believe me, I'd tell ya!" the Digimon insisted. "So what happens now?"

"Well, eventually, we'll try and get you back home," Noire spoke up. "But for now, it's probably better if you stay confined in Erika's phone, in case Myotismon tries to control you again. I'd rather not take any chances, got it?"

"Aww... okay," Anklyomon sighed. "I wish there was somethin' I could do to make it up to you humans..."

"Well, if you happen to remember anything else, let Erika know so she can tell us, all right?" Brian suggested.

"Okay, sure," Anklyomon nodded sadly. With that, Erika tapped on her phone, the holo-screen winking out.

"By the way, where is Lisa now?" Noire asked.

"Still at Guild headquarters. We had her put in a holding cell for the rest of the night, out of an abundance of caution after she revealed her true nature," Brian said solemnly. "She says drinking red Gatorade helps stave off her cravings for blood, but the higher ups didn't want to take chances. She's out of the cell now, but being kept under close supervision."

"Well, she insisted that she had no idea about the vampire's plans for eternal night from the murder case," Uni supplied. "She had suspected that guy was one of her kin, but that's all. Personally, I think she's telling the truth."

"I'm inclined to agree. She doesn't seem like she wanted to cause any trouble on her own," Noire said. "So we should focus on this Myotismon and his partner. Do we have any idea if they have any other brainwashed Digimon?"

"I never saw any creatures when I was in the factory," Steamax shrugged. "Of course, they could be hiding on the business server, like the Anklyomon..."

"Well, I can try to hack into the website again when I return to the detective agency," Erika suggested. "If I'm able to get in this time, then it could be safely assumed that those Anklyomon were all they had for Digimon underlings..."

"All right, you do that, and also try to get a hold of Mirei," Noire said. "There's no way so many Digimon could go through that portal without her noticing, and I don't want to think that she's slacking on the job!"

"No, she's quite attentive and focused, from what I remember," Erika mused. "But yes, I'll try to have Miss Kyoko call when I get back. So if you'll excuse me..." She got up from her chair, giving Noire a brief bow before exiting the room. "Just hope she doesn't make me try her coffee again..." she muttered under her breath.

"So, I guess that's meeting adjourned?" Uni asked.

"For now, yes," Noire nodded. "Steamax, I want you to keep eyes on the factory for now, and let us know if you see anything suspicious."

"Very well, Lady Noire," Steamax stood and bowed, before vanishing into the shadows.

"As for you and Agent Duane," Noire said to Uni, "you should try and get some rest after last night. Especially the latter! I don't want to raid the factory without you all being at 100%, understand?!"

"Of course," Duane nodded as he and Uni stood up. "I'm sure Alfred will have some chamomile tea ready for me when I get home, like he usually does after a long night..."

"And I'll let Ciel and her sisters know what we've found out so far, so they can prepare," Uni said, then snapped her fingers as an idea came to her. "Oh yeah! And maybe you could get some jugs of holy water ready for when we confront the vampires!"

"Oh, good idea! I'll get with Pastor Balder to help me make some," Noire smiled and nodded.

"Just don't overwork yourself either, Lady Noire," Brian said before departing. "We're going to need all the muscle we can get for this operation..."

"Good thing I'm just about caught up on my paperwork," the CPU acknowledged.

*Kuremi Detective Agency*

"Well, it looks like you aren't having any trouble getting into the server now," Kyoko said as she observed the lines of code scrolling rapidly on Erika's laptop.

"Guess that confirms that the modded Anklyomon were the only Digimon minions that Myotismon brought with him," Erika mused. "Still doesn't explain how they got past Mirei... have you gotten through yet?" As soon as she said that, a ringtone sounded from Kyoko's computer. "Guess that answers that question..."

"Now to see if she picks up," Kyoko stated. Two rings later, Mirei Mikagura's face appeared on the screen. "Good morning, Mirei."

"Ah, hello, Al- (ahem) I mean, Kyoko," the spectacled woman greeted. "To what do I owe this pleasure? There haven't been any Digimon trying to access the portal as of late..."

"Well, it's like this, Miss Mikagura..." Erika began, explaining the situation with Paler Sunscreen.

"A Myotismon, you say? Oh, dear..." Mirei cast her eyes downward as she adjusted her glasses. "Do you know how long they've been there?"

"From what we've found out, it has to have been at least a month, if not longer," Erika told her. "You only recruited me to help recently, so I don't know how long you've been watching that portal..."

"It wasn't until Sistermon Noir and Blanc came looking for their sister that I set up camp by the portal on a regular basis," Mirei responded. "That would have been about two or so weeks ago. Before then, I was only checking the portal sporadically, due to its instability... So it's quite possible that Myotismon accessed said portal when I wasn't checking. And you say he's allied with another vampire from that world?"

"Right, but she's a complete mystery," Erika said. "We have no idea where she came from or why she decided to join forces with Myotismon, other than they're both being bloodsuckers... hopefully I can find something from the internal servers, now that the Anklyomon have been neutralized..."

"I see... Kyoko, do you think the Sistermons have what it takes to deal with Myotismon?" Mirei inquired.

"I know that Sistermon Ciel can digivolve to Pandamon, as well as access an 'awakened' state," the detective replied. "I believe that she was attempting to train Noir to try and achieve the latter, though I don't know what progress they've made... That being said, from what I've learned about Miss Noire's goddess power, she could probably hold her own against Myotismon as well. The only thing I worry about is that AB woman..."

"I'm afraid I can't offer much help there," Mirei shook her head. "In my human world, vampires were strictly a fictional construct... but I wish you and Erika good luck in dealing with this situation."

"Thanks, we'll probably need it," Erika deadpanned.

"Until next time, then," Kyoko said, cutting the connection. "Well then, how about we see if we can find anything on the business server?"

"I'm on it," Erika nodded as she went back to her laptop, sitting down and starting to type... "Let me access the payroll, see if I can find any clues there..." After typing for a few seconds, a list of names came up. "Okay, let's see... here's Aviel Kyokoku, it says he was hired about a month and a half ago. That tracks with what Mirei told us..."

"Check to see if anyone was hired at the same time as him," Kyoko suggested.

"Okay, I'll check the security staff," Erika nodded, scrolling down the list... "Hmm... there's an April Burns here that was hired at the same time..." A bit more typing brought up a picture of a familiar face. "This is AB, all right. Looks just like what I remember from last night."

"So they must have met before Myotismon assumed control of the company," Kyoko pondered. "However, 'April Burns' is likely a pseudonym, just like Aviel Kyokoku... though it's still possible that 'AB' is an acronym for her real name..."

"Well, I can't find anything else on her. No date of birth, no social security number, nothing. She's a ghost," Erika said in mild frustration. "Likely the same with Kyokoku himself, but we already know he's not from around here."

"So all we know about her is what Lisa Paler told the Guild," Kyoko concluded. "Which means Miss Noire and the others will going in blind when they confront her... you said that you managed to temporarily incapacitate her with your poison scales, correct?"

"Yes, but only because I caught her off-guard," Erika pointed out. "I doubt she'd fall for the same thing a second time... I did overhear Miss Uni saying something about holy water when I was leaving, though..."

"Then we'll have to hope that proves effective, so we can subdue her and Myotismon without too much trouble," Kyoko noted grimly. "In the meantime, we'll call the Basilicom back and let them know what we've found out..."
