The two had arrived where the video rental place had existed in 1986. Marty pressed the button and Arthur came out of the window. Marty thought, 'Huh, deja vu.' Marty and Emmett were under the window.

Arthur asked, "Yeah, who is it?"

Emmett blurted out, "It's McFly!"

Marty shushed, "Shh, I know!" He walked forward a bit, letting Arthur see him. He added, "Hey Arthur, can you come down for a minute?"

Arthur replied, "Do I know you?"

Marty responded, "We got something for you!"

Emmett came out too and started to add, "It's a sub…"

Marty cut him off, "A subscription to 'The Accountant Weekly'." He threw Emmett a glare, "He won't come down if he knows the real reason we came."

Emmett commented, "Oh, right."

Arthur said, "I'm not interested. And besides, the boss won't let me leave the room! Sorry, some other time."

Arthur closed the window and walked away. Marty, Emmett, and Einstein all walked back to the town square. Kid and Matches came out of the barber shop again. Marty had an idea. He walked over to them, gaining their attention.

Kid taunted, "Well, well…look who's back. They say rats always return to the scene of the sinking ship!" He then turned to Matches and said, "Get him, Matches!"

Marty ran off with Kid on his heels. He jumped into the town square, going up the gazebo as Kid yelled at him down below. Marty took out the tape recorder and recorded it. Marty then turned to Einstein.

He pleaded, "Einstein, help!"

Einstein barked, going over to Kid and attacking him. In the confusion, Marty got down off the gazebo. Einstein got off of Kid, which is when he noticed that they were gone again. Kid was pissed.

He huffed to Matches, "You let him get away, idiot!"

With that, the two gangsters walked off. Marty breathed a sigh of relief, petting Einstein afterwards.

Marty replied, "Thanks Einstein. Annie would've killed me if I wound up staying in 1931."

Einstein barked, wagging his tail. The three of them then headed back to Arthur. Marty buzz again, letting Arthur come to the window again.

Arthur complained, "What now…?"

Marty and Emmett hid under the window as Marty brought out the tape recorder and pressed play. They heard Kid yelling, making Arthur think that Kid had returned. Arthur came down, seeing them.

He asked, "Huh? Where's Kid…?"

Marty got out the subpoena and answered, "I got something for you, Arthur McFly."

Arthur stated, "Thanks!" He read it as he gasped, "A subpoena?!"

Emmett replied, "Ordering you to appear in court and provide evidence in the investigation into…"

Arthur blurted out, reading it on the paper, "Kid Tannen?!" Arthur turned to them, waving the paper to them, "Take it back!"

Emmett pointed out, "You can't get rid of it, Mr. McFly. Once you've been served, it is your duty to report to court at the earliest possible time. Failure to do so could lead to a warrant for your arrest."

Arthur repeated, "Arrest?! But Kid will kill me! Stupid, Artie! Stupid, stupid! Holy cats, what am I going to do?!"

Emmett suggested, "I suggest you avail yourself of the protection of the court."

Arthur was still freaking out a bit, "Oh gosh! Oh gosh!"

He took a lead to the courthouse. Arthur went into the courthouse as Marty turned to Emmett.

Marty commented, "Well, we served the subpoena and got a barrel of booze delivered to your house. Looks like we're off to your lab to build your rocket powered drill!"

Emmett stated, "We make a good team, Michael."

Marty whispered, "Oh you have no idea. Annie you would have loved." Marty then thought of something, "Um you do have a lab, right?"

Emmett replied, "What kind of future patent holder would I be without a lab?!" With that, he took the lead, "C'mon!" Marty smiled as he followed Emmett. Marty was about to let Doc know that he was off but Emmett came up to him. He told him, "Let's go! Time waits for no man!"

With that, Marty and Emmett ran off. Doc smiled after them. He knew that Marty could get it done.

At the lab, Marty was looking around. He was really impressed. He went over to the rocket powered drill.

He asked, "Are you sure this gonna work, Emmett?"

Emmett reassured, "Don't let the ramshackle nature of my laboratory fool you! If all goes according to plan, we'll soon be in the possession of the most powerful rocket fuel known to man!"

Marty stated, "That's great. Um how?"

Emmett explained, "It's very simple!" Emmett walked over to his tools, "This crankshaft induces a powerful electrical current into the electrolysis chamber, producing hydrogen that must be periodically released into the primary distillation barrel! While tending to the hydrogen, we'll also need to regularly sprinkle these shredded protein flakes into this aquarium of tuber bacteria to generate the necessary nitrogen to catalyze the reaction!"

Marty responded, "Cool."

Emmett shook his head, "No, no! Extremely hot! The temperature of the reaction is 623 Kelvin by carefully pumping these bellows! Any questions?"

Marty started to say, "Uh…"

"Emmett! WHY IS THERE A BRACE OF DRUNKARDS GATHERING ON OUR LAWN?!"

Emmett paled, "Oh no, it's my father…"

The youngest McFly asked, "So?"

The inventor explained, "So he doesn't know that I am engaging in acts of science exploration here! He thinks this is where I go to pore through my law books! You tend to react, I'll try to get rid of him."

With that, Emmett stepped out of the lab. Marty couldn't help but smile at the irony. He followed Emmett's instructions step by step, listening to him and his father go at it.

Marty asked, when Emmett came back, "Are you okay? You and your dad sounded…"

Emmett admitted, "It was an argument that we should've had a long time ago. We…" That's when Emmett noticed something. He stoked the fire, sprinkled the bacteria, and used the crankshaft to help. He added, "Eureka! How in the world did you keep up with me?"

Marty laughed, "You'd be surprised. I remember when my cousin, um…Ami, and I used to do this all of the time."

Emmett perked up, "You two are close?"

Marty confirmed, "Yeah, we're dating. I'm um hoping to ask her to marry me soon."

To that, Emmett smiled. He told Marty, "Now all we have to do is fuel up the ol' rocket powered drill. And you and I can…"

Marty realized that it was almost time to say goodbye and got sad. He was getting to like helping Emmett. He interrupted, "And I can take it and go."

Emmett raised a brow, "But don't you want to test it first?"

Marty replied, "No time. The last, um, train for Washington D.C. leaves in just a few minutes…"

Emmett responded, "Oh! Right! You got to get this baby to the U.S. Patent Office."

Marty stated, "Exactly…"

Emmett asked, "So tell me, Michael, when can I expect to hear back from the patent office?"

Marty started to say, "Oh, in about… I'd say…" But when he saw Emmett's smiling face, he just couldn't lie to him anymore. He sadly added, "I can't…"

Emmett perked up, "Huh?"

Marty confessed, "Emmett…I'm not from the patent office…"

Emmett stammered, "I - I don't understand…"

The youngest McFly stated, "I lied to you. I didn't want to… It was just…it was the only way I could get you to trust me." The inventor was in shock. Marty added, "See, there is somebody in big trouble. Someone who is very important to Ami and me. Someone who is important to you too. I can't tell you who…but I need to save him. Tonight. And I need your invention to do it." Marty grabbed the kart that had all the stuff on it. As he did, Emmett looked at the designs to the drill. He looked sad. Marty said, "I'll get it back to you, I promise. And Emmett…" Emmett turned to look at him as Marty smiled, "You're going to be a great inventor."

Emmett turned back to look at the designs again, making Marty sad. He didn't want to do it this way but there was no turning back now. He pushed the kart towards the exit.

"Wait!" Emmett pleaded, making Marty stop and turning to him. He added, "Keep the throttle at about eight."

Marty smiled sincerely at him before leaving the lab.
