"Valerie, I'm going to grab us something to eat, what do you want?" Damon asked, interrupting Valerie's trail of thought.
"Quel? Oh, I'll take the double cheese burger. Thanks Daddy." Valerie smiled, shaking her head out of French mode. She looked up from her homework to see her Dad put on his jacket.
"Okay, I'll be right back, call me if anything happens." She watched him as he headed out of the security guard's room, closing the door behind him.
Valerie sighed, sitting back in her chair as she gave up on her homework. As much as she loved the language, her mind really wasn't focusing. All she could remember was what had happened yesterday. So many questions and no answers. Like, who is Dani Phantom really? Phantom calls her his cousin but… were they cousins before they died? They do look a lot alike when the girl's in her ghost form. Than how'd she end up with her human half? How is that even possible? And so is Vlad! Is there more of these… she thought for a minute and came up with the best thing to call them as being hybrids. Are they dead with a human half or alive with a ghost half?
"Garrr! None of this is making sense!" Valerie cried out to no one as she was close to pulling at her hair.
Her phone went off, taking her mind away from her thoughts. She pulled out the phone and looked at the caller ID, not recognizing the number. She flipped the phone open and asked, "Hello?"
A high pitch sound started up, getting her to take the phone away from her ear to look at the device. The sound faded away, letting her put it back to her ear only for an explosion to go off, flinging her away from her desk.
"What the-?" Valerie held her side as something wet had covered the area. She sat up, trying to take in the room that was around her but the lights must have gone out, leaving her in the dark. A heat flared up, making her think it was a fire but the fact that she didn't see anything confused her.
A ringing found its way to her ears as she felt around, trying to figure out what had happened. She activated her suit, knowing she needed to protect herself from whatever was going on around her. Something hit her from behind, being the last thing she remembered.
-.-.-.-
"Have you heard anything from the doctor?" a voice asked, getting Valerie to slowly come to her senses. There was still a ringing in her ears but it wasn't as bad as it was before. Just a slight bell instead of a blaring alarm. A moan reached her ears as she tried to move only to find what felt like wires attached to her face and arm.
"Val? Don't move okay," a voice said. A hand held hers as the male was trying to comfort her.
"Who's there?" Valerie asked, trying to open her eyes but something was restricting her eyelids from moving. She reached upwards with her free hand only to find a gaze was surrounding her eyes. "What happened? Somebody answer me!"
"Valerie, calm down," a different male voice tried, putting a hand on her other shoulder to try and calm her down. "You're in a hospital."
"Your dad said something about an explosion with some ecto-weapons," a female voice explained.
"Danny, Sam, Tucker?" Valerie asked, putting together the only three-some with two guys and one girl she could think of.
"Yeah, we're here for you, Val," Danny said, his voice soft and caring.
"Ah, you're awake, Miss Gray," a new voice said as the door opened. Footsteps came closer to her bed, getting her to turn towards the male as he stopped on the side Danny was on. The hand left her shoulder as the man asked, "How are you doing?"
"Confused, what happened?" Valerie asked, instantly going into information mode.
"It looks like an ecto explosion, the Fenton's are examining the accident to learn more about that. But the explosion damaged your eyes so you'll have to keep the bandage on for at least a week for your eyes to heal. You've also received two degree burns on your arms and legs so I'd like to keep you here for the weekend," the, now deemed, doctor explained.
"Where's my dad?" Valerie asked.
"He's trying to convince his boss that he needs some time off," Tucker said.
"No, he can't do that!" Valerie exclaimed, turning towards the boy.
"Val, you're his daughter, he's not going to listen to us," Danny tried to point out as footsteps could be heard heading to the door.
"If you need anything, Miss Gray, don't hesitate to ring," the doctor called before the door shut behind him.
"I wish he'd shown me where that button was," Valerie muttered, feeling around the bed frame for an indent.
"It's right here," Danny offered, gently grabbing her hand and moving it to point towards an indent a couple of inches away from the edge.
"Thanks Danny," Valerie smiled up, hopefully at him.
"Hey sweetie, how you doing?" Damon's voice asked as the door opened again. Something happened that made the air feel stagnant, Valerie imagined her dad was glaring at the two boys since she had dated both of them.
"We better get going," Tucker said, his voice shaking as the boy headed towards the door.
"Anything we can bring you, Val?" Sam asked, laughter in her voice.
Val? Wow, when did I become on more of friend terms with her? "No, thanks though," Valerie smiled at the girl.
"Call us if you need us," Danny called as he retreated out of the room with Sam and Tucker following him.
"How you doing, Valerie?" Damon asked, the bed dropping by her feet to signal he had sat down where he would her bed at home.
"A bit annoyed that I can't see for a week, but other than that, fine," Valerie admitted, trying to bring a smile to her Dad's face. Just because she couldn't see didn't mean she didn't know what was going on around her. Her father cared about her, and ever since her mother had died, he tried to do everything he could for her.
"I didn't know you had become friends with those two boys again," Damon said, his voice sounding like he wasn't really sure where he wanted to go with that.
"They may be weird, but they're loyal," Valerie said, realizing it as she said it out loud. Even Sam, who hadn't been her closest friend, had proven herself to be more loyal than any of her more popular friends. Well, all besides Star, who still talked to her even after her fall from popularity.
"You know this means no more ghost hunting until you can see," Damon said, a smile in his voice.
"I promise." Valerie raised her right hand to have it an oath. She dropped her arm as a thought appeared to her. "How'd you…"
"I'm a Dad, I know a lot more than you give me credit for." Damon laughed as he patted Valerie's shoulder. "Get some rest, I'm going to see if I can find me something to eat."
"Dad…"
"Yeah sweetie?" Damon asked, his weight half off the bed.
Valerie paused, not wanting to sound clingy but…. "Be quick, please."
"Will do." Damon lightly squeezed her hand before leaving her bed completely.
"Oh, when do I get that double cheese burger?" Valerie asked, getting a laugh from her father as he sounded close to the door.
"When you get out of here, we'll hit a fast food place, okay?" Damon smiled before the door closed behind him, leaving Valerie alone in the hospital room.
Valerie laid back into the pillows, the beeping of the device pumping her IV and the EKG monitoring her heart the only sounds in the room making it feel bigger than it should.
-.-.-.-
"I don't think she knows, dude," Tucker tried, taking a sip from his drink as the three sat down around their table at the Nasty Burger. "I mean, she didn't try to pull out any weapons earlier."
"Tuck," Sam hissed.
Danny sighed as he looked down at his food, not really hungry but with his parents busy at Axion Labs, this was dinner. "I guess I'm just being paranoid," Danny admitted, picking up his burger and half-heartily took a bite from it.
"Hey, with your life, you have to be," Sam smiled, looking at him from across the table.
"Where's your cousin now anyway?" Tucker asked, remembering what all had happened yesterday from what Danny had told them.
Danny shrugged, swallowing the food still in his mouth before answering, "Don'no. She said something about her wanting to go places, so I guess anywhere within a day's trip from here."
"With Valerie knowing about her though, we've gotta be extra careful," Sam pointed out. "You said she saw her change?"
Danny nodded his head. "I know… she looks too much like I did two years ago." He dropped his head onto his hands as the whole problem weighed down on him like a ton of bricks.
"Well, at least we've got a week for that problem, and by then she might forget what Dani looked like, right?" Tucker suggested.
"We can hope," Sam said. "And in the meantime, your parents are trying to figure out what blew up the labs."
"Let's just hope that was a freak accident," Danny said, pointing a fry at the girl.
