I duck a swipe from a sword, a small smile on my face as my own lashes out.
The man who I'm fighting against goes down with a cry of agony.
*FWOOOSH*
I lift the sword in my other hand, a large gout of fire being sucked into the blade. The blade seems to glow brightly with the attack absorbed.
I kick a third man in the chest, spinning slightly and slashing my glowing weapon.
A red line is cut in the air.
It rushes forwards at high speeds, fire shooting from its corners it makes contact with an armored figure.
It cuts him cleanly in half.
Acceptable loss.
I lift my pain sword and weave through the next three figures, lighting jabbing the tip of the blade into their bodies.
They all collapse spasming in pain.
I look cross the battlefield where more than half of the opposing force are prone, orbs of water around their heads.
Juvia is... terrifying, honestly. But that just makes her more attractive.
She's untouchable by most conventional means, and she seems to have gotten quite good and drowning people just enough.
Must have a lot of trial and error with that.
I duck one final swing and slash upwards. My final opponent letting out a scream of agony as he collapses, beginning to writhe on the floor.
The edges of my pain sword are blunted, but it still causes this much damage.
"Juvia are you finished?" I call out.
"Yes darling- I-I mean Yes Arthur!" She beams.
She's trying to play it cool. she hasn't demanded I be her boyfriend yet, but it's bound to happen sooner or later. Anyways, our mission is quite simple. Defeat a... dark guild?
Dark guild is probably not a good word for it.
Criminal Organization would probably be better as they have a few magic users but mostly non-magical grunts.
Regardless.
We have accomplished our task.
Now the rune knights shall arrive to clear the bodies and capture the living.
"We work quite well together, I believe." I admit, causing the girl to swoon slightly. "Shall we return to the guild?"
"Yes!"
I let out a long breath as I look to a strange little rectangle with a band around it.
Will. This. Work?
I cup my chin, looking over my newest creation.
This one took even longer than Lullaby.
About two months... with breaks every now and then.
Maybe I should have gone for something simpler like a twice critical.
Ah well~ this'll be the thing that allows us to kick Fairy Tail's ass.
You could even compare such an effect to Fairy Tail's 'Great Fairy Magics'.
That's right...
The Sacred Gear, 'Origin Release'.
As in...
Second Origin.
Harnessing the magic stolen from Ultear was a bit more difficult that I originally thought.
Magical power is more... wispy... than a soul, or a physical object.
I was only able to glean one spell from the Arc of Time magic. But reasonably, that one spell was potent enough to base an entire sacred gear around it.
Sure, I could have likely made a fairly potent time-based sacred gear had I not focused on figuring out this one spell- I would have had a lot more to work with as well... as getting the magical power into this state 'consumed' a bit of it.
A long breath leaves my lips as I slowly lift the rectangle and slip it on my arm.
I can feel it bind to me...
I close my eyes, letting out a long breath, the corners of my mouth turning upwards.
"Activate."
It promptly unfolds, trapping my arm in an angular bracer that goes all the way around my forearm.
It glows brightly, red lines creeping down my arm.
A low hum leave my lips... then I pause.
REGRET! HOLY SHIT REGRET.
I faceplant into my bed abruptly, letting out a muffled scream.
I adjust my collar slightly, a grey jacket with the Phantom Lord symbol in purple on the back.
"Ah, there you are, Arthur." Jose begins as he appears with a dull flash. "Are you ready to show the true power of phantom lord?"
"I am." I nod once. "I finished using that one object you gave me in exchange for Lullaby."
"Oh?" The man grins viciously. "Did you create anything good?"
"It sadly wasn't enough to make a new sacred gear by itself... however... It was quite useful to augment my sword birth into a subspecies... I can now 'invest' shards of power into my created weapons, allowing them to sustain themselves as magical swords without draining me even slightly... plus it gives them a fair boost in power." I gesture to the sword sheathed on my back.
"Ohohoho good work."
Jose had fulfilled his promise... the 'Grand Magic Games' has been created... sponsored entirely by the Phantom Lord guild.
Fairy Tail was seemingly quite eager to fight us. I wonder why?
"Do we know our opponents? I can take an educated guess. The salamander. The ice make wizard. Fairy Queen. Those are the three I am certain will be competing."
"Regretfully, I do not know." The man states. "I ensured that spying on the other teams is against the rules... and while I am quite adept at twisting rules to my own advantage... I believe that we can take the fairies in a fair fight today."
"Provided Makarov's brat isn't here." I deadpan. "He's a perfect counter to everyone but like... Aria... due to his sheer speed and destructive power."
"Yes." The guild master nods slowly. "However... I do know that he is apparently on a mission with that triad of his... I specifically timed it so he would be gone."
"Ooooh. Devious, master." I grin.
"Yes, yes. Come on." The man states, gesturing for me to follow him. "I need to explain today's goal to the other selected members."
We begin walking deeper into our waiting area.
"So... how are the ticket sales?"
"Valuable! Ohoho this was quite an idea! Win or lose Phantom Lord is coming out on top... even more so if we can accomplish our goals."
I enter our waiting room instead of the locker room, spying Juvia sat nearby, her hair is down, finally. It took a little convincing, but judging by how her eyes widened as she looked in the mirror she saw herself in a new light.
Gajeel is sat in the corner on another sofa across from me, arms hung over the back of it. His eyes track me as I walk across the room and take a seat next to Juvia, who smiles brightly.
Aria is stood nearby, and the eyebrow mage from Galuna is here as well.
"Well. Took your time, swordmage." Gajeel grunts. "Geheheh."
"Sorry, I was thinking about who we'd be facing and I lost track of the time." I reply.
"So! My wonderful S-Class... and Yuka- You will likely make it quite soon, do not worry, my boy- I shall now tell you our strategy of the day."
"Hn? Gajeel hums. "I just want to fight Salamander. He's fighting today, right?"
"He likely will but... I actually have a mission for you in particular, Gajeel."
"Hn?" The man with long black hair grunts, a studded eyebrow raising slightly.
"Win or lose... Phantom Lord is going to profit from this day for it is not a matter of us winning or losing. We have supplied the venue, reaped the rewards for the ticket sales, the food sales, and the merchandise. We have already won. We will face no losses even with the monetary bet I have made with Makarov. While I would like to win and show the world that Phantom Lord is on top... that is a secondary goal."
"A secondary goal, Master?" Juvia questions. "This seems... hm... a little out of character, Juvia believes."
"It was originally a plan suggested by our one and only Arthur here." Our guild master admits.
Four sets of eyes- or rather, three and a blindfold- lock onto me.
"Why should I crush the cunning mind of our wizards? Besides, this plan was quite devious and I am... ashamed I didn't think of it sooner, honestly." He continues. "This entire duel... it is all to just get Gajeel and that damned fairy queen into the same ring."
Gajeel blinks slowly, then his face morphs into a grin. "Oh? Ohohohoho I can see where you're heads at. I'm in."
"Your goal today, Gajeel, is to not defeat Erza... but merely to eat as many of her items as you can." Jose grins deviously. "After all, Fairy Tail has presented this banquet for you... it would be quite rude to refrain, no?"
"Geheheh." Gajeel grins.
"The rest of you... are here to defeat the other wizards, but take a fall upon the entrance of Erza... but make it believable, if you would. We wouldn't want them catching on. The second she is on the field, of course, Gajeel will be entering play. When you feel as if you have had enough, defeat her and we will try to win the remaining fights, but not before. Juvia, your intangibility will be a tremendous assistance in this. Erza's elemental weaponry will pose a problem for you, as will the Ice mage provided he fights."
"Yes, Master Jose." Juvia nods.
"Win or lose... I want people to realize that Phantom Lord isn't just some second rate guild!" he grins.
"The first match will be in five minutes... Arthur... you are up first."
"Yes, Master." I nod once. "May I inquire about the protection of the spectators?"
"Ah. No need to worry of that, my boy! I've repurposed the Jupiter cannon's systems to charge a protective ward. Go all out freely." Jose smiles.
Welcome viewers to the very first Grand Magic Games!" A voice calls out. "I'm Chapati Lola, and I am joined here by the two very special wizards! Both a member of the ten wizard saints and both the guild masters of our two competing guilds! First, you have Makarov of Fairy Tail, and next, you have the creator of this event, Jose Porla of Phantom Lord!"
The crowds cheer.
"Now... I'd imagine this event is on everyone's mind... tell me, Jose... what inspired you to create this event?"
"Well, one of my wizards came to me, disgruntled about his experiences with the fairy tail guild, he inspired me to create this wonderful event! Friction between guilds can be quite a dangerous thing. So. I have devised a method for our wizards to... let off steam at each other as it were! Besides, don't tell me questions such as 'who is better' hasn't been echoing in your mind? Who is better? Fairy Tail's Salamander, or our Black Steel? Aria of the Great Sky, or the Lightning of Fairy Tail? Those questions have been burning at my mind for ages, and with this, I suppose we will finally see!"
"This is the first intelligent thing you have said in a looong time, my friend." Makarov laughs. "But we all know who's going to win, after all! Fairy tail's number one!"
The crowd cheers.
"N-Now, shouldn't we explain the rules of this event?" Chapati begins, presumably Master Jose is giving Makarov quite the death glare right now and the man is sat in between them.
"Yes." Jose hisses out. "The rules are quite simple... No doubt even those in Fairy Tail could understand... we both select mages to duel. We have already written our decision on which of our sides should go first and supplied it to our announcer here. The winner will be decided by surrender, incapacitation, or loss of all magical power."
"What do mean by 'Incapacitation'?" the announcer seems to question- as he was paid to do, I assume.
"If a wizard falls into an event that they cannot get out of, such as their opposing wizard holding a blade to their neck and pinning them down. That is a loss. This is nothing more than a friendly duel. Not a fight to the death."
"I didn't think Phantom Lord had a concept of friendship~" Makarov snipes.
"The winning wizard." Jose continues. "Shall be forced to remain in the arena. Where they are given a ten-minute break. This is more for the spectators to go to the bathroom or get something to eat, but it will allow tired mages to rest while limiting the opportunity to get outside help such as healing magic or enhancement spells."
"That seems more like something Phantom Lord would do." Makarov observes.
"Yes. Which is why I added this rule so when you lose, you will have no excuse." Jose replies. "Regardless, also in this time, the guild who had just lost the duel may strategize with their team, but they must submit their choice of who to send in next before the break is up."
"And if we don't?" Makarov questions.
"Well, we don't really have a punishment system yet." Jose admits. "I just thought that since Phantom Lord has lain out these rules, and that Fairy Tail seems so keen on badmouthing our name, it'd look fairly hypocritical to in turn break the rules at your own convenience."
"Well, why don't we meet our first duelists!" I can hear out hired announcer exclaim. There's a slight crinkle of paper.
"From the Phantom Lord Guild, you have their newest S Class after only three months of joining the guild! It's Arthur Pendragon!" Chapiti exclaims as I step out, a charming smile on my face as I offer waves to the crowd. Noticeably a lot of girl voices seem to pick up as I take center stage. "And for his opponent... He's Mysterious, he's elusive, it's the first time he's made a public appearance! It's Fairy Tail's most Mystifying S-Class Wizard Mystogan!"
"Fuck." I whisper as a cloaked figure slowly meanders forwards out of the doorway on the other side of the ring.
His face is covered, five staves sit on his back, body wrapped in bandages.
"FUCK." Jose curses.
"Heheheh! Don't think I didn't notice the timing of your little request, Jose! Waiting until Laxus and his Thunder God Tribe are out!" Makarov states. "You're about thirty years too young to pull one over on me!"
My eye narrow slightly as I draw a sword.
What do I know of this guy?
Aside from the whole other-reality thing.
"Allow us to start the countdown!"
"Ten!"
Large numbers appear above us.
'he uses sleep magic. I know this much.'
"Nine!" The crowd seems to join in on the countdown.
Illusions? If I remember correctly, he can also combine the effects of his staves.
"Eight!"
My eyes flick around him in caution, my grip tightening as the countdown continues.
I might be forced to use it...
Damn.
That's... a little problematic.
"Three!"
"Two!"
"One!"
"Fight!"
My eyes begin to droop slightly, but with a flash of movement I abruptly stab myself in the leg.
"Arthur Pendragon seems to have stabbed himself in the leg!" Comes the helpful observation of the commentator.
I can see Mystogan's eyes widen slightly underneath his cowl.
"When fighting for your guild... you should have enough resolve to do at least this much." I declare, pantleg beginning to be stained with red.
I lunge forwards, ignoring the pain.
Power surges in my blade.
As I slash downwards.
Mystogan shatters.
"Ah. Annoying." I observe.
I am blasted upwards. Carried miles upon miles into the sky-
"Fake." I declare as a new sword appears in my hand offhand.
The world abruptly shatters as I duck to the side, avoiding a barrage of sharpened water droplets.
I slash my original weapon, a large blade of wind appearing and rushing towards the Fairy Tail Wizard.
He, of course doesn't know that with 'Illusion Breaker', the sword I just created, I can see through his fake.
I abruptly duck to the side and slash downwards, a magic circle appearing in front of him.
A tremendous force seems to strike my blade as it makes contact with the circle.
Ah... a reflection barrier.
The sword sails from my grasp as I flip up and over the man.
He blocks my slash with one of his staves.
There's a flash of light behind him as the dagger I subtly dropped explodes, knocking him forwards... right into my waiting fist that buries itself into his stomach.
He is knocked backwards, quickly regaining his composure, he does a few hand signs that look like they came right out of Naruto.
He slams a hand down, purple waves of magic shooting forwards across the earth.
Pov: Nearby.
A blue haired woman smiles brightly as she gazes up at the Lacrima screen in front of her.
"How sad." Aria intones. "To fight against the unknown of Fairy Tail... Mystogan. My jealousy has no end! Perhaps when he loses I will get a crack at him."
"What?!" Juvia gasps. "He won't lose!"
Her love is fighting so passionately!
Mystogan being here was quite the curveball. But...
He is putting up a fight!
She watches the blonde form of her beloved rush forwards flipping through the air, showing off surprising agility and acrobatics as a blade forms under one of his feet.
He uses it to pivot through the air, avoiding a blast from the cloaked Fairy Tail wizard.
He lands with a slight roll, his jacket ruffling slightly as he spins, snatching one of his discarded swords from the ground slashing a large crescent of magical energy into the air that shoots towards the mysterious S Class.
He is forced to leap over the attack as it is rebounded, but he continues his charge, magical energy crackling around one of Mystogan's staves as they enter melee, the fairy tail wizard rapidly spinning his weapon and jabbing out with it.
a pulse of magic seems to abruptly lock her beloved's feet to the ground.
"I will admit." Mystogan whispers, voice lightly muffled. "You are strong. But this is the end."
Four of his staves stab into the ground around the blonde, energy crackling around them as the cloaked wizard raises his own upwards.
Five magic circles appear above the blonde wizard.
"Arthur! No! Look out!" She exclaims, not that he can hear her.
"The end?" Arthur questions, his face remaining stony and serious, the slightest smiles appearing on his lips. "Who decided that?"
He seems to disappear moments before...
*FLASH*
*BOOOOOM*
The screen flickers briefly, but when it clears it reveals Arthur as he appears behind the fairy tail wizard, slamming the pommel of his sword into the side of his head.
He is knocked aside, briefly rolling for a moment before flipping to his feet.
He seems to breathe heavily.
"You could have ended it with that attack." Mystogan observes. "Why didn't you?"
"I honestly thought that attack would have knocked you out... I'm here to defeat you, not kill or maim you after all... you are stronger than I first assumed." Her beloved replies, a small smile appearing on his face that causes her heart to swoon.
He sways slightly, glancing down at his leg with a slight grimace.
"I shall end this now." He decides. "I had wanted to save this, but..."
"Release..."
Gajeel blinks as the room begins shaking.
It's as if the entire arena is vibrating...
A tremendous aura of magical power surges around.
"Hah?" Gajeel huffs.
She had no idea he was that powerful.
"Balance Breaker..." He intones.
The sword in his hand begins to brightly glow.
Red and purple energy seems to surge along the blade as it crumbles, pieces falling off and revealing a new form underneath.
It is black in color with a glowing red line that travels down the very center of the blade.
He brings his arm back, Mystogan flicks his arms, his staves quickly shooting towards him.
Arthur lunges forwards, the ground cracking underfoot.
He clears the distance between them in an instant, black blade slashing downwards.
Power surges around Mystogan's staves, but... the attack cleaves through all five as if they aren't there.
It stops an inch from his chest, a low breath leaving her beloved's lips.
A line is carved in the earth that seems to explode outwards from behind the fairly tail wizard.
The black blade comes up to the fairy tail wizard's throat.
"My win... good... match." Arthur breathes out.
"Phantom Lord secures the first victory of the grand magic games!" The announcer shouts as Arthur turns, slightly swaying as he takes a few steps towards the other side of the arena.
"AHAH! Who pulled one over on who, Makarov?!" Jose cackles.
"You've certainly found a powerful wizard." Makarov notes. "a few dozen more and maybe you'll be a challenge for Fairy Tail."
"Phantom Lord has dozens of skilled mages, old man." Jose replies. "One can be powerful without leveling a town each and every time they cast a spell."
Arthur snaps his fingers, a throne made of swords quickly sprouting from the earth.
"And with this, the ten minute break has begun! Fairy Tail, please select your next participant!" The commentator seems to cut in, stopping the guild masters from bickering.
He takes a seat upon it, hand resting on the handle of his sword as he stabs the tip into the earth below.
There are a few beads of sweat on his forehead as he rubs his face with his other hand. A second sword appearing in his lap.
He seems to let out a long breath, gazing around at the surroundings as he sits there in his metal throne, propping his head up with one fist, his face falling into a serious expression that makes Juvia want to squeal.
"Damn. I'm actually a little surprised that damned runt managed to pull it off." Gajeel huffs. "Damn sleep mage. That would have been an annoying fight."
"To think he was holding back this much..." The blue haired wave-mage with large eyebrows speaks suddenly. "I seem to have a long way to go..."
My eyes close as I sit on the throne.
I am slightly light-headed... better than I was before. My leg-wound is mostly healed now thanks to that regeneration sword I had lain across my lap.
They should be about to pick the next fighter.
"And just like that, our ten minute break comes to a close! Fairy Tail as decided on their next fighter! You know her, you love her, she's top five in 'Wizards you would want as your girlfriend' in Sorcerer Weekly, it's ERZA SCARLET!"
A red haired woman marches out of the tunnel before me. A serious expression rests on her face as she gazes over me, glad in armor emblazoned with the fairy tail symbol.
"This will be a match to remember, sword versus sword! Who will win?! Let's begin the countdown!"
"Ten!"
"I will be taking you seriously from the get-go." Erza declares as with a flash she appears to be in some sort of spikey armor, a large cleaver rests in her hands.
"Nine!"
I take a breath, rising to my feet.
"Eight!"
The throne of swords seems to crumble as I brush my hand along the edge of my balance breaker weapon.
"Seven!"
"I would suggest something more protective... my next attack isn't something you could endure or dodge with that armor... I'm going all in. One attack with everything I have left."
"Six!"
Her eyes narrow slightly.
"Five!"
"..."
"Very Well." She seems to decide. "I shall respect that."
"Four!"
Her armor changes. Instead of what she was just wearing, now she dons bulky armor with two massive halves of a shield imbedded in the forearms. "I shall face you head on, Phantom Lord Wizard!"
"Three!"
The halves slam together as I shift my stance, taking my weapon in two hands.
"Two!"
A magic circle appears in front of the shield, following by another and another and another. Purple, Black, and Red energy seems to pool around my sword, surging outwards in a wave that causes the sword to appear cloaked in this destructive energy. My magical power surges wildly around me.
"One!"
I bring my arms back as I prepare to swing.
"Fight!"
"EX-"
"Barrier!" Erza calls out.
"-CALIBUUUUUR!"
I swing, the world devolving into red, purple and black.
A surge of energy rushes towards Erza, the floor is turned to molten rock, the beam of concentrated power washes over the barrier causing Erza's feet to slightly slide back, carving trenches in the earth below.
This isn't just any attack.
This is an attack using all of my second origin... and all of the swords that I sustained- and empowered- with the Tenrou Jade shards whose sole purpose is to store excess magical power and give it back to me...
And, as those swords run out of energy and they break, those shards of the jade are instead installed upon my Excalibur, vastly improving its strength with each.
After around ten seconds... the surge of power stops... I am left panting,, the sword in my hand fading in and out of reality.
It eventually shatters as I gaze upon the destruction I had wrought.
The arena's floor is practically gone. A dull heat radiates outwards, the temperature has spiked a good twenty degrees or so.
All of the floor in front of me has been reduced to molten rock.
Except for a cone extending behind the red haired woman.
The blue barrier shatters abruptly, the woman falling to a kneel, her armor seems to lightly crack as she breathes heavily but eventually rises to her feet, glaring at me in challenge.
"..."
"It is my loss." I declare as I turn limping away. "Perhaps if I was uninjured, this would have ended differently."
There's a massive cheer.
"And Fairy Tail acquires their first point! A battle over in a single move! Like a duel between the samurai of old!"
"HAH!" Makarov laughs. "Another point for Fairy Tail."
"Oh, we will see who will be laughing by the end of this." Jose seems to glare. "One of my mages has taken out one of your S class and exhausted another. Say what you will, Makarov... but we are winning."
"Though... with the arena like this, it will be quite hard to continue... Sol! If you would!"
"Qui! Master Jose!" A thin and fragile looking man in an orange suit and monocle seems to exclaim "La Fae Titania, please step upon this platform so I do not touch you with my magic."
A small pillar seems to raise just behind Erza.
She glances up, but eventually leaps up on top of it.
A wave of earth magic seems to cool the magma, flattening out the arena once more.
I step into the tunnel and continue walking, eventually coming to our waiting room.
"Hooh. That was exhausting." I sigh as I limp inside taking a seat by Juvia.
"My prince! Are you okay?!" She fawns over me.
"I'm fine Juvia. I've just never used that much magical power before. I'm quite exhausted." I admit.
"You can rest your head upon my lap if you want?"
"I might take you up on that." I smile.
"Ugh. Can you love freaks take that shit somewhere else?" Gajeel scoffs.
Well, Devious fucker's back. Showing the world just what TRUE royalty can do! Plus, with his second origin, he had a power surge great enough to unlock his balance breaker.
And let's be real, could it have been anything else?
