This is a crossover/au. The times for HP will be closer to TVD timeline.
Damon wasn't one that could be called fatherly. He was known more for his playboy ways but one day changed all of that. He had friends of the magical nature, not nature witches but more powerful core witches. He had actually come across them by accident.
Damon had tried to make a snack out of a lovely redhead one night while in England. Said snack decided to hex him when he attacked. He had been so surprised, he could only stand there and stare at her.
"What are you?" He asked, rubbing his arm where the hex had hit him.
"Witch, and you're a vampire." The redhead growled, "Your morals must be shit to attack a pregnant woman."
Damons eyes snapped to her stomach. Yup, she was pregnant. "Sorry, I honestly didn't notice." He held his hands up in surrender.
The redhead glared, "The least you could do after attacking me is walk me home. My husband is most likely worried."
That was how Damon was introduced to Lily Potter, her husband James and two of their friends, Sirius and Remus. He spent a lot of time with James and Lily, Sirius and Remus were always there when not on missions. It was an odd experience for him. These people didn't care that he was a vampire or that he wasn't magical. They treated him better than his own brother did. Lily became almost a sister to him.

The night that changed everything was one Damon would never forget. He had been out grabbing a bite, Halloween was a great night to get away with freely feeding. When he had finished, he had gone to see the little lady that had him and everyone else wrapped around her finger.
Hazel was an interesting little girl. She hardly ever cried and didn't seem to mind his vampire face. She had also shown signs of early accidental magic. Her parents had been amazed. Damon thought she was a sweet kid. He remembered Stefan as a baby, Hazel was a million times better a baby.
Approaching his friends home, he felt something was off. Seeing the hole in the roof, he flashed inside. Damon saw James first, he could tell his friend was dead. Flashing upstairs, he found Lily next. She was sprawled before the crib, moving closer, he looked for Hazel. She wasn't there but a small bit of blood was.
Hearing voices entering the home, Damon flashed out. Hopefully Sirius or Remus had Hazel. He stayed hidden, watching as people combed through the house. He needed to find her, she had been hurt. Hearing on of the men talk, he knew who had taken her. Flashing away, he headed to the last place Lily would want her daughter.

Dumbledore had been a part of many conversations Lily and Damon had. She didn't trust the man like others, thought he had a plan for her daughter. That was why Lily had told him where to find her muggle sister. Lily was smart, she had declared Damon as a guardian. He had tried to deny her but knew he could hide the girl until she was Hogwarts age. Lily had given him all the information he would need to raise Hazel. They had both hoped he wouldn't have too but you can't always get your way.
Damon watched the old man with a sneer. He could see why Lily didn't trust him, he wouldn't either. She had been right, the old man had ignored the wills of James and Lily, he was planning to leave Hazel with these people. Damon wouldn't let that happen. He had promised Lily, and he would keep that promise.
The cat woman left, as did the very large man. Dumbledore stared at Hazel with a look that made Damon shudder. Once that man left, he moved forward. He couldn't believe they had left her on the doorstep in the winter night! Wouldn't they be in for a surprise when it came time for Hazel to return.
Looking down at the bundle, green eyes looked back at him. "Alright bug, let's get out of here." Damon said, picking Hazel up. Seeing the note that dropped, he pocketed it before pulling her close and flashing away.

Damon wasn't sure what Lily was thinking, he should not be responsible for raising a child. He was the last person who should be trusted, especially raising a little girl! He knew Lily was laughing at him from the other side. The playboy turned daddy. There goes his sex life. Kind of hard to pick up women when you had a baby with you 24/7.
Settling into a routine had been hard at first. Hazel missed her parents, but she was happy she still had Damon. All of her childhood was spent traveling with him. They would settle in one place for a couple years before moving on. She had an amazing childhood thanks to him.
When it came time for her to start school, she only attended the best private schools. Hazel was extremely intelligent, and Damon made sure to feed her thirst for knowledge. By the time she was ten, she was already taking high school classes. She was hoping to be done with normal school before she had to return to the Wizarding World.
Damon had told her all about her parents, how he had met her mom. Hazel had a good laugh at that story. He made sure to show her pictures, he didn't want her to ever forget them. Anytime they went to a new country, he would find and take her to the wizarding side. He made sure she was prepared for when her letter would arrive.

Hazel had a friend growing up. She never mentioned this friend to Day because she knew she was the only one who could see him. Most kids would be scared of someone like this, but Hazel knew she was safe with him. He always watched her, making sure she was safe.
She never realized the significance of this friend and she wouldn't until she was older and facing down a madman. So, for now, she just kept him her secret but knew that he would always be with her.

Hazel's eleventh birthday was bittersweet. Damon had made sure to celebrate it but they both knew what would be arriving today. Being back in London was hard for them both. Damon hadn't brought her here since that night.
Neither on wanted to be where her parents were murdered. Needing to be close, they had decided to stay in the city so the owl could find them. They were pulled from their thoughts by a peck on the window. Hazel's Hogwarts letter had arrived.

Over the years since starting Hogwarts, Hazel had kept things from Damon. She knew it was stupid, but she wanted him to live his life. The man had given up ten years to raise her. Hazel would always be thankful and grateful, but she wanted him to have his freedom. She worried he would resent her.
No one in the Wizarding World knew of Damon, she wanted to keep it that way. As the years went on and things grew darker, she knew she had made the right choice.
During her summer before seventh year, Damon had gotten her a cell phone. He had felt her pulling away and wanted her to be able to call him if she needed him. Hazel had smiled at the gift. She could text him during the hunt. It was a small comfort, but she loved it. Damon had told her he was heading back to see his brother for a bit, but she was to call him any chance she had.
Hugging Damon, Hazel had trouble letting go. She wasn't sure what she was about to face but she wanted him to know how much she appreciated everything he had done for her. With one last hug, she headed out. The Weasley's were having a wedding, and she had been invited.

Damon stared down his brother and the doppelganger. They were getting on his last nerve. He hadn't heard from Hazel in over a month, and he was getting worried. He didn't need the drama the two in front of him were causing. He had thought coming here would be good, but it seemed that his brother would never change. He wished Hazel was here, she was always a way to get his mood good.
"Why don't you just leave Damon?" Stefan started in again. Of course, he was stuck up Elena's ass. Caroline, Bonnie and Ric were all staying quiet.
Before he could respond, his phone began ringing. Pulling it out of his pocket, he almost dropped it when he seen the caller ID. Ignoring everyone around him, he answered, "Hazel! Where have you been? I've been so worried!"
He didn't notice the looks everyone was sending him.
"It's hard to hear you bug," Damon was moving around, trying to get a clearer signal. Giving up, he puts it on speaker, "Hazel."
"Day, I'm so sorry. I should have told you he was back. I should have told you things had gone to shit. I'm sorry" he could hear Hazel's sobs, and a fist tightened around his heart.
"Whose back bug, what's going on?" He asked.
Sniffling was heard, then, "I have to let him kill me. There's a piece of him in my head from that night. I didn't know" more sniffles, "I'm so sorry. I wish I could hug you one last time. Thank you for everything you did for me. You were the best."
Damon's knees went out, he hit the ground "Hazel, who's back? Not him, he's dead. He died!"
"I'm sorry. I love you dad, so much. I'll tell mom how great you did." The call disconnected.
Not one person spoke as they watched Damon. He stared at the phone, tears running down his face and looking like he had just died.
Stefan moved towards his brother, "Damon, who was that?"
Damon shoved him away. This couldn't be happening. She wasn't allowed to die. Why hadn't she told him, said anything? He didn't notice everyone was still watching him. He couldn't hear anything besides Hazel's cries. What could he do? He couldn't even go to her, he didn't know how to find Hogwarts. It would be too late anyways. Why was he always too late?
Turning, he walked upstairs to his room, slamming his door shut. It was a nightmare. He will wake up and it not be true.
