Hazel had won, she had defeated Voldemort. She was glad this nightmare was over. Now, she needed to get out of her. She needed to get to Damon. Her phone was shattered but she could go to him. She winced when she remembered the call, she needed to apologize. She wasn't sure how he would react after that call but she needed to leave. Everyone else could handle this, she won their war.
Finding her friends, she told them she would contact them soon. Finding Kingsley and McGonagall, she told them to owl her if they needed. Running as fast as she could, Hazel left Hogwarts and her grounds. Pulling her new wand, she made a portkey.
Hazel knew exactly where Damon was staying. Setting the location, she pointed her wand at the key and said, "Portus" with a flash, she was gone.
~~~~
Hazel hate traveling by portkey. For some reason, she could never stick the landing. Standing, she noticed it was nighttime. Brushing the leaves off herself, she gave up when she realized she was still dirty from the battle.
Walking up to the house, she could hear voices inside. Deciding to put her manners to use, she knocked and waited.
A brunette girl answered the door. Looking Hazel up and down, she asked, "Can I help you?"
Hazel's eyes narrowed, "Nope" she pushed past the girl and walked into the house. Looking at the people in the living room, she looked to Damon's brother, "Where's Damon."
Stefan's eyes widened. This girl was covered in blood, cuts, bruises and looked about seventeen. Finding his voice, he asked "Why are you looking for my brother?"
Hazel glared at him, "Look, I've had a really shitty day, year, tell my where Damon is, now!" She hadn't realized she had raised her voice until she heard her name.
"Hazel" Damon was staring at her like she was a ghost.
"Day" Hazel said but it was cut off by her sob. Damon flashed down the stairs and scooped her into his arms.
"You're so grounded young lady." Damon said through tears of his own.
Hazel gave a watery laugh, "I'm so sorry."
He squeezed her tighter, "Why didn't you tell me? I could have protected you."
She shook her head against his chest, "I couldn't let him take you too. You're the only family I have."
Damon tightened his arms around her. He noticed how skinny she was and how dirty. She had blood all over her and not all of it was hers. Looking up, he realized they weren't alone.
"How about you use my shower, and I'll get you some food. We can talk more later?" Hazel nodded. Damon led her upstairs and showed her where everything was. He pulled out her shampoo, soap, toothbrush and hairbrush, leaving them on the counter.
Hazel smiled, Damon always took care of her. Before he walked out, she called "Love you Day" he smiled and shut the door behind him.
~~~~
Heading downstairs, he ignored the curious looks everyone was giving him. He knew they had questions but none of them deserved his answers. He rolled his eyes when Stefan followed him to the kitchen. Deciding a light meal would be best, Damon started on soup and grilled cheese. She needed some fruit too, orange juice was full of vitamins.
Stefan watched his brother put the meal together. He wanted to know who the girl was and what the hell had happened. Having enough, he asks, "Are you really just going to ignore me?"
Damon didn't respond, he just kept on cooking. When Stefan watched him add his own blood to the juice, his eyes widened.
"Who is she Damon?"
Finishing up, he could hear the shower turn off. Placing everything on a tray, he turned, only to be stopped by Stefan. "Move" he growled.
Stefan stepped aside. The look in Damon's eyes was a dangerous one and he wasn't about to fight him. Walking back to the others, he shook his head.
~~~~
Damon knocked, hearing Hazel answer, he walked in and placed the tray on the bed. He let her eat and drink, making sure she drank all the juice. Once she was finished, he moved the tray. Hazel leaned against the pillows, patting the spot beside her. Once Damon settled, she cuddled in like she did as a child.
Hazel told him everything, everything she had been keeping from him. They cried together when she told him about Sirius. She told him Remus was a dad now, he was the only person she had told about Damon. When he asked why she had hid it all, she got quiet.
"You spent ten years raising me, I wanted you to live for yourself. I know raising a kid was never something you expected but I am so grateful you did. I was just trying to let you live and be free."
Damon wasn't sure how to respond. Raising Hazel had never been something he ever regretted. Looking down to her, he said, "Hazel, I could have left you that night, but I didn't want to. Raising you gave me purpose. I don't regret one bit of the last sixteen years, except sending you to Hogwarts. I should have known that old bastard was up to something."
Hazel cuddled deeper into his side. "Thank you for being you. I love you Day, if you'll have me, I'll stay with you."
Damon pulled her closer, just like when she would have a bad dream when she was little. "As if I would let you leave. Love you bug."
~~~~
Damon could hear everyone talking the next morning. Looking to Hazel, he noticed she was dead to the world. Sliding off the bed, he quietly snuck out of the room. These morons were going to wake her if they didn't shut up. Walking down the stairs, everyone froze and watched him.
"Damon, who was that girl? Is she one of your little toys?" Elena sneers.
He ignores her and heads down to grab a blood bag. Heading back up and to the kitchen, he starts to make Hazel's favorite breakfast. Of course, the others couldn't leave him alone.
"Damon, we need to know about the girl. Who is she?" Stefan asked.
"She's none of your business brother. She doesn't concern any of you so back the hell off!" Damon growled.
No one noticed Hazel, she knew how to sneak around vampires, so when she walked past Stefan, he jumped. "Please tell me those are pancakes" she asked Damon.
Smiling, he nodded and plated two pancakes. "Here, I'll grab the syrup. Do you want juice or milk?"
"No coffee" Hazel pleaded with her best puppy dog eyes.
Damon shook his head, "No. You're too skinny. Milk or juice."
"Milk" she pouted. Damon smirked and poured her glass. While she was eating, she stared at everyone else. "Damn, don't you people ever leave?"
Elena scowled while Stefan gaped, "I live here" he muttered.
Rolling her eyes, Hazel turned back to Damon. "I need to do some shopping. I should probably send out some letters too. I kind of just left yesterday."
Damon nodded, he poured her some coffee now that she had finished her breakfast and milk. Hazel watched as she sliced his finger and put a good amount of blood in. "Don't sigh, you looked like death warmed over yesterday. Until you're better, you get blood."
Hazel tried to hide her smile, "Yes dad." Damon scowled but there was no heat behind it. She knew he had been worried, she would do as he said. "I need something to wear out, do you have my stuff?" She asked when she finished her coffee.
"Yeah, it's in the back of my closet. Why don't you go get ready while I deal with this." He motioned to the others. Hazel nodded and skipped from the room. "You have three minutes, ask."
Everyone was stunned but Ric seemed to think the quickest, "What happened to her? She's the one who called yesterday, right?"
Damon nodded, "She was supposed to be at school. Turns out, she's been fighting in a war. One I had thought ended sixteen years ago when her parents were murdered."
Caroline asked the next question, "Damon, who is she to you?"
Damon looked from the others to the stairs. "I raised Hazel from the age of one. Her mother brought me into their ragtag group and begged me to save her daughter if something happened to her. The man who killed her parents and the supposed leader of the light wanted Hazel for different reasons." Sighing, he could tell everyone was surprised. "I've been wrapped around that girl's finger since she was born and yesterday, I thought I had lost her."
No one knew how to respond to that. They had all seen and accused Damon of being self-centered and not someone who took responsibility. Even Stefan hadn't known about Hazel. He had protected her from everything and everyone.
"Your time's up" Damon stated towards the stairs when Caroline called out to him.
"Are you taking her shopping?" She ignored the looks from Bonnie and Elena.
Damon nodded, "She needs clothes and stuff for her room." Stefan looked surprised at that but kept his mouth shut.
"Can I tag along? She may like shopping with a girl more than with her dad." Caroline smirked at his scowl.
He stared her down before nodding. "You may be right. Okay, be ready to leave in an hour."
Caroline nodded and Damon headed upstairs to check on Hazel. The others looked at Caroline like she had two heads. "What" she scowled.
"You're really going shopping with them? We don't know if she's a threat or not. I mean, she was raised by Damon." Elena hissed.
Caroline rolled her eyes, "That girl showed up here last night looking like the walking dead. I watched as Damon's heart shatter during that call. The only threat will be him if you all keep acting like this."
She was the last person who would ever stick up for Damon, but she had seen it. Caroline had seen when his whole world came crumbling down. Hazel had to be an amazing person to make someone as heartless as Damon Salvatore crumble.
~~~~
Damon had raised Hazel in a lot of different places, but he had always avoided the states. He didn't want her around his brother, Hazel knew of Stefan's ripper tendencies. She knew these people didn't like Damon, she would make sure they regret judging him without actually knowing him. Once she was ready to go, she was surprised the blond girl was going with them.
Damon was driving and Hazel sat next to him. The blond girl sat beside her. "Hi! I'm Caroline. I figured shopping would be better with another female."
Hazel smiled, "I'm Hazel. Thanks for coming with. I noticed the others were pretty standoffish. Are they always like that?"
"Elena's untrusting. She's had a couple of people come after her, so she keeps her guard up." Caroline explained.
"What about you? You're a new vampire so I'm guessing you don't trust easy." Hazel asked.
Caroline looked surprised, "How did you know?'
"Hazel's special. Her mom knew I was a vampire, so did her dad." Damon laughed.
Hazel smiled at Damon, "You tried to eat my mom, she made sure you regret it" They both laughed but Caroline looked shocked.
"You tried to eat her mom?" Caroline gaped.
Damon explained how he met Lily. They all got a good laugh out of that.
"How did Stefan not know about you?" She asked Hazel.
"Damon didn't think it was a good idea. I had an amazing childhood anyway, he made sure I never wanted for anything. When I went to Hogwarts, that's when shit went to hell." Hazel explained.
"What's Hogwarts?" Caroline asked.
"A school for core witches and wizards. We have a whole secret society, so technically I can't tell you but you won't be able to repeat it. A tongue tie jinx, sorry but I had to." Hazel was waiting for her reaction.
Caroline only nodded, "I understand. So, what was Damon like growing up? Just how did he handle raising a girl?" Her grin made Hazel laugh and Damon scowl.
"I did just fine raising her, she's still alive isn't she." Damon said.
"Not for lack of others trying to change that" Hazel joked.
"Not funny bug." Damon growled.
Hazel knew it was going to be a sore subject for a while. Laying her head on his shoulder, she said "Sorry Day."
Caroline couldn't believe Damon had a soft side, only for Hazel though. They chatted for the rest of the ride, getting to know each other better.
~~~~
Hazel had so much fun shopping with Caroline. The other girl was such a happy soul and had a bubbly attitude, it was contagious. Damon made sure to pay for everything, even the things Caroline picked as a thank you. He realized while watching the tow, he needed to apologize to Caroline. He couldn't imagine what he would do if someone did that to Hazel. He would have killed them. As soon as they got to the house, he would pull Caroline aside.
Hazel needed to stop in one more store but didn't need her dad to follow. Turning to face him, she smiled sweetly, "Will you go grab a table for lunch, I need to stop in there." She pointed to Victoria Secret behind her.
Damon grimaced, handing over his card, he nods. "Yeah, I really don't need to see that."
Hazel laughed and took his card. Grabbing Caroline, they rushed into the store. She was in desperate need of new undergarments. Luckily, this store had plenty to choose from. Hazel picked out five set and then extra bras and panties. She had missed the feel of new clothes. The last year in the tent made her appreciate everything Damon had done for her, even more.
"That color will match your skin tone really well." Caroline told her.
Hazel really enjoyed Carolines company. Sure, she had friends at Hogwarts, but she wanted to separate herself from there. She had saved them, now she just wanted to live her life. Finishing up the girls checked out and went to find Damon.
They had one more stop to make after lunch. Caroline had told her of the masquerade party, Damon said she could be his plus one. Hazel knew about Katherine, Damon had told her years ago about the woman. When he told her, the woman was back, Hazel knew she needed to have a talk with him. Damon had a big heart, and it would get him hurt.
~~~~
Hazel was looking through the racks of dresses. She knew Damon would be sporting black so she could pick anything. An idea came to her when she found a blue-green dress. Perfect, she could charm and transfigure a mask to match. Grabbing the dress, she quickly found shoes to match.
Damon looked to the bag, "Find what you needed?"
"I did. I'll make our masks for the party." She smiled at him.
Caroline watched the two. Damon was a new person. He was softer around Hazel. This girl looked to him with such trust and love. The way a daughter looked at her father. Caroline wished she had that, her dad never looked at her that way.
~~~~
Stefan watched as his brother and Hazel carried in a bunch of bags. He must have bought her a whole new wardrobe. When Caroline walked in, she sat her bags down before going out to grab more. Damon came back down and walked out, he had what looked like a bed spread and rugs.
Elena scowled as she watched Damon carry in stuff. She didn't like how he acted with this girl. Now, Caroline was in it. They didn't even know if she was a threat, the girl needed to answer some questions. She could be working with Katherine.
Stefan decided to see what they were doing. Walking upstairs, he walked to the room nearest Damons. The door was open and Caroline was helping Hazel make the bed. He was surprised because the walls had changed color, so had the carpet. "How did you do that?" he blurted.
Damon walked out of his room, carrying Hazel's stuff. "With a tap" he smirked and walked past his brother.
Elena could only gape. The girl was moving in. She would be living with Stefan. She didn't want this girl here, Damon wasn't paying attention to her anymore and now Caroline seemed to be friendly. Huffing, she told Stefan, "I'm leaving. I need to talk to Jenna."
Stefan nodded and walked her out. Heading back upstairs, he wanted to find out what was happening.
~~~~
Caroline needed to head home, her mom wanted to share dinner. Hazel thanked her for all of her help and added her number to the new cell phone Damon had gotten her. Picking up her bags, she headed out to her car when she heard Damon call out.
"Caroline, can I talk to you for a minute?" he asked.
Nodding, she said "Sure" she was a little hesitant.
"I need and want to apologize to you. What I did to you was horrible and I feel like a dick. I understand if you can't forgive me, but I needed to apologize. I was going through some shit but it's not an excuse for what I did" Damon paused, he took a breath before adding, "I don't want you to hold my actions against Hazel."
Caroline looked surprised. Damon had apologized, she had been wanting an apology, but she needed to know what had brought it on. "Why? Why are you apologizing now?"
Damon looked into her eyes, "I realized that I was a monster for what I did. I was in a dark place, but I never should have brought it down on you. Seeing Hazel made me realize how shitty I was. I know when I tell her, she's going to hex me. Her mother would have too."
Caroline gaped, "You're going to tell Hazel? Why?"
"Because if I don't and she found out I lied or kept it from her, she'll be pissed. I'd rather deal with her when I tell her rather than if I didn't."
"Thank you" Caroline whispered, "I may not forgive you yet, but I do appreciate you coming to me and apologizing."
Damon nodded, "I understand" Smirking, he says "Tell your mom I said hello."
Caroline rolled her eyes but smiled. "Goodbye Damon" she walked to her car and shook her head. Maybe Hazel would be good for Damon. He was already a better person with her here.
~~~~
Hazel smiled as she finished her room. The walls were now a deep purple, the carpet was black, her bedspread was a dark green. It all matched the dark wood furniture. She had her own bathroom and walk in closet, it was her own space now. She smiled at Damon when he walked back in, her smile dropped when she seen his expression.
"What's wrong Day" she asked, hopping on her bed.
Damon sat next to her, "I need to tell you something, you're going to be disappointed in me Hazel" She didn't like how this was sounding. When he began to explain, she didn't know how to respond. Caroline was such a sweet person, how could he have hurt her like that. When he finished and told her he had apologized, he waited.
"Did you mean it? Your apology?" When he nodded, she asked "I don't know why you did it but if you're making amends with Caroline, then I'll let it go. Unfortunately, you're going to have a problem for a few days" The smiled she gave him sent chills down his spine. He couldn't move fast enough, the spell hit him. Damon immediately felt the itching.
