I've been wanting to pick this fan fiction up again but just never found the time or the energy. But I started rewatching the MCU movies and it reawakened my love of these movies so I want to try and get back into completing this story. I hope you guys continue to enjoy this. I never expected anyone else to even want to read it, as it's been more for myself than anything else.
...
Reina sat on the floor of the warehouse, tying a knot in the bandage she had wrapped around Bucky's bloodied knuckles. She sat back, watching him flex his fingers and rub his wrist with his metal hand. She gave a soft sigh, staring at the metallic arm. She glanced back over her shoulder to Sam and Steve talking, working out their next moves. She returned her focus back to Bucky as he sighed, hanging his head down.
"This...All this won't end well" Bucky said it flatly, plainly.
Reina laughed to herself, nodding her head in a silent agreement. She already knew that for a fact. She had drawn her line in the sand, and no matter which side succeeded nothing would be as it once was.
You don't have to follow your old war buddy.
Tony's voice echoed through her head. Was that it? Was she just blindly following Captain America.
"Rei?"
Reina looked back to Sam as he called her name. He held his hand out to her, Reina taking it as he pulled her to her feet. Bucky looked up at them, his gaze shifting past them as Steve approached them.
"I, um...called Sharon" Steve looked to Reina, clearing his throat at the mention of Peggy's niece. "She...agreed to help us out. I told her to meet us at the airport."
"So, we're really on our own with this one huh?" Reina asked quietly. She looked to Steve. "Calling Tony, out of the question?"
"Unfortunately," Steve sighed, shaking his head. "Even if he did believe us, he signed the accords"
"I may know a guy" Sam pipped in, pulling his cell phone out. "Clint can swing by and pick him up after he gets Wanda"
"Wait, Clint?" Reina straightened her back, turning her body fully to face Sam now. "You called Clint?"
"We need all the help we can get" Sam countered back at her, dialing the number.
"He's retired. He's supposed to be with his wife and kids. His youngest isn't even a year old yet" She raised her voice in irritation, Steve quickly shushing her.
"We just called and asked. He could have said no if he wanted to. It was his choice, just like all of us are here by choice" Steve assured her, but it didn't help.
Reina ran a hand through her hair, pushing her bangs from her face as she regained control over her emotions. She took a breath, letting it out slowly then looked to Sam.
"So... this 'guy you know'?" Reina asked him.
"Just trust me"
Reina scoffed. She didn't exactly like the sound of that response.
...
Reina knelt beside the open driver's side of the car, stooped under the steering wheel as she twisted the two wires together. She grasped a third wire in her other hand, gently touching them together as the engine started up. The three men stood off to the side, watching her as the car roared to life. Sam leaned over towards Steve, keeping his voice low.
"Did...you teach her that?" He asked, his gaze still set on Reina's back.
"No... it's probably best not to ask..." Steve trailed off, standing to attention as Reina stood and dusted her hands off.
"Oh, come on, we're already criminals. Might as well add grand theft auto to the list" Reina climbed into the driver's seat, adjusting it. "Alright, hurry up boys!"
Sam was the first to approach the car, climbing into the passenger seat as Steve and Bucky took the back. Sam shut the door with a thud, giving Reina a strained glance.
"Um, you can drive right?" He asked, almost afraid to know the answer.
Reina scowled at the question, giving Sam a passing glare.
"Hey, I hot-wired the damn car of course I know how to drive it." Reina settled into the seat, clearing her throat. "I mean, it's been a while but it's like riding a bike. You don't forget"
Reina peered out of the corner of her eye as she saw Bucky leaning forward to them.
"Do you know how to ride a bike?" He asked it innocently enough.
Reina thought about it for a moment, deciding not to answer. Instead, she whipped the steering wheel around as they backed out of the parking spot. The engine revved loudly as they took off towards the airport.
...
Reina sat in the car as Steve talked to Sharon, Sharon opening the trunk of the small Audi to show him the shield and Sam's wings. She tapped her fingers on the steering wheel, listening as Bucky asked Sam to move his seat up.
"No"
Reina shook her head, feeling the car shift as Bucky slid to the other side of the car to sit behind her instead. She cocked her head to the side as Steve pulled Shron in for a kiss. She scrunched her face in slight disgust. Not so much because he was kissing someone, but more so that the one he was kissing was his girlfriend's great-niece. Seems Steve had a thing for Carter women. She passed her gaze to Sam, sitting there smirking at the scene and bobbing his head in approval. She swung her arm out, slapping the back of her hand on his chest as he flinched and yelped.
"Hey!" He clutched his chest, looking at her with wide eyes. "You hit me?"
"Oh, please it wasn't even that hard..." Reina pushed the car door open, stepping out as Steve walked past her carrying the equipment. He kept his gaze downcast, not wanting to look her in the eye.
She laughed slightly, making her way to Sharon. Sharon stood with her arms crossed, leaned against the car.
"Sharon-" Reina started, but Sharon cut her off.
"I already got the run down from Mr. America over there" She interjected before Reina could say anything else. "I already know what this means to me by stealing this stuff. If I wasn't prepared for the consequences I wouldn't have agreed"
Reina wanted to argue with her, but the damage was already done. Sharon was an enemy of the state because of them.
"Just..." Reina started off, trying to find the right words. Instead, she pulled Sharon forward into a tight embrace. She felt Sharon tense in her arms before slowly relaxing and returning the hug. "Be careful, ok?"
Sharon gave a short nod, watching Reina as she pulled away from her. Reina held the card out to her.
"Use it to get to where you're going. They won't be able to track it" Reina gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder and one more tight smile before turning and walking back to the car.
