"Is it only me, or has 61 been long for a really long time?" Matt mumbled, looking at his watch. "Ya, 61-" Cruz attempted to answer before getting cut off. Truck 81,Squad 3, car accident at Lakeshore Highway. "Why is 61 not called together with us?"Stella asked. "Maybe they are busy with a patient," Cruz answered.
"OH MY GOD! Is that 61?" Stella practically yelled. Matt instantly lifted up his head to see 61 down the bridge, sideways, with smoke billowing out of the front and supplies strewn everywhere. Matt immediately opened the truck's door, getting ready to jump out. "Wait for Stella to stop the truck!" Cruz yelled. Matt turned a deaf ear to him and jumped out, rushing towards the ambulance. "Brett! Sylvie! Please answer me!" He yelled as he saw that Sylvie was unconscious through the cracked both Squad and Truck arrived, they quickly worked on getting Sylvie and Gianna out.
As Sylvie was driving the ambulance, she was at the top, making the extraction easier. The second she was out, Matt immediately felt for a pulse. He sighed in relief, although it was weaker than his liking. However, Gianna was a lot harder to extract, taking them quite a bit longer. Before Gianna was extracted, Sylvie was on the stretcher of ambulance 19. Just as she was going to be loaded into the ambulance, her heart rate went through the roof, becoming very quick. The paramedic yelled, "She's in V-fib!" before starting CPR as her partner got the defibrillator ready. "Charge to 200! Clear!"she yelled. Looking at Sylvie limp as they resuscitated her made Matt shed tears. "We've got a rhythm," they said as they loaded her up and rushed her to Med. Gianna had just been extracted...
A few hours later, at med...
"Family of Gianna Mackey?" The entire 51 looked up to see nothing but despair in Dr. Rhodes's eyes and expected the worst. "Ms. Mackey sustained severe trauma to her head and chest. She had a pneumothorax, and we inserted a chest tube as her lung collapsed. She suffered from a massive brain bleed, and her brain swelled terribly. I am so sorry... Her injuries were too severe; she didn't make it through the brain surgery. Her time of death was 1803," he explained. Everyone's face filled with grief, having lost a member. "Why, Gianna, it's only like her second shift with us..." Stella sobbed into Severide's chest. "Just pray we don't lose Sylvie too..." he mumbled to her.
Two more hours later...
"Family of Sylvie Brett?" Everyone's head shot up to look at Dr. Manning. They couldn't make out anything. Dr. Manning opened her mouth and said, "She's alive. Ms. Brett has a slight trauma to her head, which caused her brain to swell. She did break 7 ribs, which could be due to her airbag not working. 2 of her ribs punctured her lungs, and 1 of them punctured her heart, which might explain why she coded. Titanium plates and screws were then inserted to stabilize the broken ribs and prevent further damage. She's in the ICU now; you guys can visit her, but only 2 at once." All of them sighed in relief; thankfully, they didn't lose Sylvie as well. Stella went to Sylvie's room together with Matt. Sylvie looked fragile on the bed; she was intubated and still unconscious. Stella's heart broke for both Matt and Sylvie. "You can hold her hand," Dr. Manning said. Matt hesitantly grabbed her hand, afraid that a touch could break her. They planned for Gianna's funeral to be in two months.
1 week later...
"She has shown no signs of awakening; it has been a really long time," Matt mumbled to Kelly and Stella. "The doctors are really scared that the lack of oxygen to her brain caused extensive damage. Dr. Manning wants to do surgery for her brain because the medication is not helping to decrease the swelling in her brain." Both of them hugged Matt as he cried his guts out. "Hi there. Sorry to ruin this moment, but I have to bring Sylvie to the operating room now." Dr Manning said, pushing her out.
3 hours later...
"She coded for 20 minutes during her surgery; her heart has been through so much trauma; with the surgery and all, the lack of oxygen to her brain for so long might leave her paralyzed or have side effects if she can wake up." Dr Manning explained. "Wha-at do you mean by if... you mean she mi-ig-ht no-ot wake up?" Matt asked, his voice cracking. His legs instantly gave up, Kelly holding him being the only reason he was standing.
1 month later...
"Baby, it has been so long...why are you still not awake? You can't leave me. I don't want to be alone..."Matt mumbled to Sylvie, who was still unconscious. He left her side just to take a bath. When he returned, he could see a few doctors examining Sylvie. "I don't know how to tell you, but... I'm so sorry, she has been declared brain dead... The vent is the only thing keeping her alive..."One of the doctors told Matt softly. Matt froze. Did I hear correctly? Is Sylvie, the love of my life, gone? He called Stella, knowing he would need a lot of support. Within 10 minutes, Stella was at the hospital with Kelly, eyes red. "Is my best friend... really gone?" She asked, sobbing. "Once I consent to remove her from the vent..."He mumbled tears flooding his eyes. He said, I am going to end her suffering..."He called a doctor before consenting to extubate held Sylvie's hand as the machine blared a monotonous beep that will probably haunt them forever...
On the day of the funeral...
Everyone is upset and sobbing; they cannot believe they lost two innocent paramedics due to Hallerck...
