A Demon's Cry
[(7)]
An entire overnight had passed since the recent incursion. The record knew it was bad when three of the Hashira were deployed to end Lower Moon Five and his family's antics and the following morning turned a new page onto the fate of Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado. Compared to the dreary atmosphere of the previous night's mountain, the sun painted the bright blue sky with some clouds, warm temperatures, and light breezes. To say it was a beautiful day could be a debatable understatement. For all those involved in the incident, this was a perfect way to welcome themselves into the arms of rest.
A break.
Though the leisurely day comforted all else, it had a rather rude awakening in store. Bounded by his wrists and feet, Tanjiro remained unconscious; ignoring the yells of the kakushi worker to wake up. His nose twitched once he earned himself one more:
"WAKE THE HELL UP, WILL YOU?!"
"Gah!" Tanjiro snapped back to reality. 'W-What the hell? Where am I?!'
A firm, mature voice captured his attention, accompanied by the sounds of expensive jewelry dancing in the wind. "I heard he was a demon slayer with a demon in tow. I was honestly expecting someone more flashy! Too bad it's just some ordinary-looking kid."
"We must see this boy to be put on trial to be judged! So it shall be!" A more excited tone emerged from the man with the fiery gold and orange hair.
'To think that he's been protecting his sister who is now a demon. What a brave and beautiful display of sibling love!' The pink-haired woman clenched her fist to her chin, absorbing the reality that is Tanjiro Kamado.
"Easy there flames! Try not to get too riled up. He's harboring a demon." Lady crossed her arms. Even when on rest, she remained armed to the teeth. "There's another one out there as well."
"Another one?" Tanjiro spoke up. "Who are you guys- OOF!"
"DON'T OPEN YOUR MOUTH UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD!"
The Kakushi roared, "DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF?! THESE ARE THE HASHIRA!"
'Hashira? What is that? Like, I have no idea.' Tanjiro gazed at the seven figures immediately looking at him. The most recognizable one was Shinobu, the Hashira who fought Giyu in the dilemma over Nezuko. Behind her was a ginormous man, enough to make Heracles look small. With blind eyes and a scar across his head, his focus remained unbreakable, like the space between his two clasped hands. Also next to Shinobu, a young man with long hair, looking rather tired and uninterested. His bored expression contrasted with the smiling face of the flame-haired man crossing his arms! He'd never seen anyone with that hair color, let alone eye color to match! A short pink-haired Hashira with green highlights remained still in front of her taller buff companion. He wore a gem headband over his white hair, one long chain hanging from each side. Last but not least, the most interesting Hashira had to be the one with a sword and multiple military weapons strapped to her. Was she a soldier? Was she a spy? Short black hair complemented her heterochromic eyes; one brown, one blue. These surely were an interesting cast of characters. Tanjiro had never seen such popping diversity!
"Welcome to the Demon Slayer Headquarters." Shinobu remained smiling towards Tanjiro. "You are here, Tanjiro Kamado, to be put on trial. But, before we begin the trial, why don't you explain the crime you've been accused of?"
"THERE IS NO NEED FOR A TRIAL!" The warm-colored man shouted. FLAME HASHIRA KYOJURO RENGOKU. "Protecting a demon is a clear violation! We can deal with this on our own! We shall execute them both!"
"In that case, I'll decapitate them both with style!" SOUND HASHIRA TENGEN UZUI. "I'll show you the most flashy display of blood ever! It will be a spectacle." His voice radiated with suppressed excitement. Would he get the chance to put on a show for himself and his fellow Hashira?
'No way! He'd kill such an adorable child as him?' LOVE HASHIRA MITSURI KANROJI. 'Such a thought fills my heart with sorrow.' Mitsuri didn't want to imagine what that would look like. The day was too beautiful to stain it with blood! There must be another outcome on the horizon!
The taller blind man remained still, keeping his palms clasped together as if he were constantly praying. "Alas, to see such a pitiful creature as this, I grieve for him." STONE HASHIRA GYOMEI HIMEJIMA "Perhaps it would have been better if he hadn't been born." Tears ran down his eyes, sorrow leaking through his trembling lips.
The longer-haired boy just remained staring off into space. MIST HASHIRA MUICHIRO TOKITO. No words came from him. No thoughts, empty-headed.
"Put him on his knees, facing away. If he's harboring a demon, I'll put one right through the back of his skull." ARMS HASHIRA MARY ANN ARKHAM, AKA LADY Crossing her arms, she spat in the direction of the younger boy. "Better to take them both out than have the weight of countless other lives pull us down for this fuck up."
All of their words smacked Tanjiro across the face one at a time. Especially with that other woman calling him a fuck up. What did these people know about him? What did they know about the suffering and the loss of life that he endured to be there that day?! And to be treated like dirt? Tanjiro's anger was only subsided by noticing a lack of Nezuko. 'Wait, Nezuko? Where the hell is she?'
"Hey, you!" The Kakushi hissed. "The Hashira are speaking! What are you looking at? Pay attention to them! These are the ten highest-ranking swordsmen in the demon slayer corps!"
"That's the Hashira…?" Reality choked Tanjiro's angst before it could swell anymore. But, the murmuring talk of execution and even the display of weapons caused Tanjiro to squirm about a bit. He had to know the answer! "Hey! Where is Nezuko?! Where did you take her?" Sitting up, he looked around the pebbled garden. "Nezuko! Zenitsu! Inosuke! Murata! Mr Dante!"
"What did that boy just say?" A voice came up from a tree, belonging to a half-masked Hashira in a zebra-patterned kimono. A white snake remained stationary on his shoulders, its red eyes piercing into Tanjiro's soul. SERPENT HASHIRA OBANAI IGURO. His long black hair nearly covered his heterochromatic eyes, similar to that of the current Arms Hashira. "I thought for a moment I heard the name: Dante. Did I hear that right, Tomioka? Or, are you just going to stand there without restraints and a sour look on your face? You're equally at fault in all of this.
'Wait, they're here? Why did I notice everyone going extra quiet saying Mr Dante's name? He is friendly with Mr Tomioka. Man, they're both screwed because of me now.' Tanjiro frowned.
Contrary, Mitsuri was glancing at the Serpent Hashira with a blush on her face and a covered smile. 'Iguro, how sharp-tongued as ever! I love that side of you!' She then turned to glance at Giyu. 'Tomioka is all by himself! All stoic-like! What a cutie! Is it true that Dante is here? That cute young man must certainly be near to say hello!'
WATER HASHIRA GIYU TOMIOKA
"Let's leave him be." Shinobu broke her silence, resuming her famous soft smile. "He did come here on his own accord without resistance. Let's come up with a penalty later." INSECT HASHIRA SHINOBU KOCHO. "What I am more interested in is hearing this boy's story. He has been traveling with a demon alongside him despite being a demon slayer himself. I wish to hear why straight from the boy's mouth. What he has done is unquestionably against the Demon Slayer Corp's rules. You are aware of that, are you?"
Judging by Tanjiro's gasp, he played coy.
"Tanjiro Kamado," Shinobu asked, "Why are you traveling with a demon as a fellow demon slayer?"
CLICK!
"Who cares why?" Lady drew her pistol, racking the slide to load a round into the chamber.
"Lady, at ease." Shinobu verbally disarmed her. "It's ok, you can take your time, Tanjiro."
All these eyes on him started to push the restrained boy into the dirt. The pressure turned chips into cracks. "She's my- She's my youn- Ack! COUGH! COUGH!" Tanjiro suddenly started coughing up his lungs before receiving a special bottle from the Insect Hashira.
Kneeling in front of him, Shinobu presented the bottle to him. "Here, have some water. I can tell you've injured your jaw so please drink slowly. I added an anesthetic to the water to help. Your wounds are still healing so please don't push yourself too much. Now, are you ready to tell us your story, Tanjiro?"
"That demon is my little sister! My family was attacked by a man in a cloak and sword when I was gone! I lost almost everyone! My sister was turned into a demon! She's never hurt anyone! She never has and never will!" Tanjiro proclaimed, "She'll never harm a human being no matter what!"
"Spare us the ramblings, they're absurd!" Obanai interjected. "If she's family, that explains why you are defending her. But, I can't trust a single word you are spouting. I don't believe you for a moment."
"How sad." Gyomei cried. "This poor child has been possessed by a demon. Let us end this young boy's life and free him from this cursed existence."
Lady furrowed her brow. "This is stupid. Do you believe demons would harbor good? It's that kind of talk that gets you and others killed."
"Please listen to me!" He pleaded. "I became a swordsman in hopes of finding a cure for her! It has been two whole years since Nezuko became a demon! She's never devoured anyone in that time!"
Tengen wasn't buying it. "Your story lacks spice and flashiness. She hasn't devoured anyone and she's not going to, you say. If you're going to plead your case at least make it more creative! Catchy!"
"I have a few things to say," Mitsuri spoke up. "Something about this is strange. I don't think the master would be unaware of this. I don't think we should act without his permission?"
Tanjiro got their attention once more, especially Shinobu who was kneeling in front of him. "Please convince them to let my sister go! Tell them! You've met her! You know she would never hurt a single human being! Tell them that my sister can fight by my side! I know she can fight as a demon slayer to protect humans! So please!"
"Well well…"
"What kind of fun do we have brewing here? A moron who brought a demon along with him," WIND HASHIRA SANEMI SHINAZUGAWA. He held Nezuko's box in his left hand like it weighed nothing. "What the hell do you think you are trying to pull here exactly?"
'Those new scars make Shinazugawa look even more handsome!" Mitsuri internally fawned over her comrade.
"Master Shinazugawa!" A Kakushi emerged. "I must ask you to put down that box."
Mitsuri then noticed Shinobu rise, facing the white-haired Hashira. 'Wow, even then angry, Shinobu looks as cool as ever!'
"Shinazugawa, please don't act out of line." Shinobu softly stated. Her face was no longer smiling, now more heavy and serious.
Sanemi couldn't help but smile maniacally at Tanjiro. "I find that demon-slaying proclamation absolute bullcrap." His hand gripped the hilt of his sword. "You know what we call a demon fighting alongside us? OUTRIGHT IMPOSSIBLE!" Drawing his blade he pointed it towards the box, plunging it clean through!
Nezuko screamed as blood oozed around Sanemi's blade.
"RAH! Anyone who harms my sister answers to me! I don't give a damn if you're one of the Hashira! I'll tear his ass three sizes bigger!" The young boy screamed, running right in front of him despite his wrists being restrained behind his back.
Sanemi was getting way too excited. The red veins in his eyes were popping visibly towards them. He removed the soaked sword from the box and swung Nezuko's blood across the ground. "Well, how very nice of you."
"RAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!" Tanjiro screamed, suddenly charging Sanemi.
Meanwhile, Giyu wasn't having it. "Cease this! The master will be arriving shortly!"
Sanemi gasped, sacrificing a moment to retaliate. Tanjiro only closed in on him. When he swung his sword to keep him back, the restrained Tanjiro leaped OVER the blade, gaining massive air on him. 'What?' He didn't expect the determination this angsty teen held over him. 'Why you little-'
THUD!
Tanjiro landed a world-class famous headbutt, taking him and Sanemi to the ground. Everyone watched in silence. No one dared to intervene in this business. No one dared to make a slip. Suddenly, Mitsuri let out a laugh, covering her face.
"Pardon me." She excused herself from the ridiculousness.
"Damn you!" Sanemi groaned.
Obanai remained wide-eyed at the sight before him. "Tomioka's outburst must have been a distraction. That boy still managed to get a blow"
"If you can't tell the difference between good demons and bad demons, then you shouldn't be a Hashira!" Tanjiro screamed. He stared down Sanemi violently, inconsiderate of his fate. He would defend Nezuko's box until his death!
Sanemi rose from the ground. "You no good… little-" He gripped his sword with a smile. "Then I'll destroy you." The Wind Hashira brought his blade to Tanjiro's neck. The detained young boy stared back at him with pure anguish. Who knew, what would happen if he got the chance to get his hands on Sanemi? The cackling coming from the older swordsman prepared Kamado to meet his fate.
"The master of the mansion… has returned."
Everyone faced the twin girls in green kimonos. Their announcement, soon followed by soft footsteps growing closer and closer to the patio, turned the heads of all, including Sanemi alike. Standing tall above the girls, he greeted all in front of him with a calm smile. "My beloved children. I thank you for coming here today."
Tanjiro gasped at the sight of the older man. The top half of his face was violet-purple, veins looking like they were ready to burst. Both kneeling twins crawled to the double doors, closing them behind the master. Graciously taking his hands, they aided him in walking to the open-lit patio. He couldn't help but smile at the sky, the sun gently kissing his face and lavishing his long black hair. "The weather is striking today, isn't it? Perhaps with a blue sky, finding ourselves here at this semi-annual gathering with all the same faces, it brings me joy."
'So this is the master?' Tanjiro snapped back to reality. 'He looks wounded. Almost sickly."
SLAM!
Grabbing Tanjiro's head, Sanemi slammed it into the ground.
'Gah! So fast! I didn't even have time to react! What is he?!' Though he ceased his quarrels at the discovery of all the Hashira kneeling before him, Sanemi included. Did he have that much influence and respect? 'Incredible.'
"I am pleased to see you in good health, master." Sanemi softly greeted. "I further pray for your continued good fortune."
The master nodded, "Thank you, Sanemi."
'Awwwww! I wanted to greet the master!' Mitsuri internally whined.
"Before we start this meeting…" Sanemi politely greeted. "...May you be as kind as to enlighten us about the young swordsman who would appear to have been accompanied by a demon."
'He didn't seem to have any social graces before. But, now he's speaking so formally!' Tanjiro pondered, face still buried in the rocks.
"Why of course, I apologize for any confusion." The master kindly answered. "Tanjiro and Nezuko have both been sanctioned. I would appreciate it if you all accept this condition."
Was this for real? They just had to accept that a Demon was pardoned by the MASTER himself.
Gyomei broke the silence. "My Master, Even though it is something you have requested, I cannot bring myself to do it. Both of those bear too much weight."
"I am also opposed to this!" Tengen followed. He sparked as he pointed to himself. "A slayer traveling with a demon is unacceptable!"
Mitsuri gleamed brighter than the sun itself, "As for myself I shall do whatever you wish, Master!"
Tokito remained still, "I'm fine with whatever, I'll forget anyways."
Shinobu refused to speak up.
Giyu also chose the path of silence.
Obanai lifted his finger of judgment, pointing it in the direction of both Tanjiro and Dante. "I don't trust them. Absolutely not. First of all, I loathe demons."
Rengoku shouted, "Master, even though I respect you with all my heart, I cannot abide by this decision! I am fully against it!"
Sanemi, though, started to tweak. "The corps mission is to eliminate demons. I ask that you punish Kamado and Tomioka!"
Every disapproval was another stab into Tanjiro's chest. Why did everyone discriminate so blindly? Despite how amazing they are, were the Hashira revealing how cruel and unjust they can truly be?
"The letter." The master beckoned.
The younger girl reached into her kimono, retrieving a letter. Reading an abridged version, she announced the message from the former Water Hashira's request. "I ask you to allow Tanjiro and his sister to accompany one another. Because of resilient mental fortitude, Nezuko has not lost her human mind. Even when starved she has never devoured a human. That remains true more than two years later. Although the situation sounds outlandish, it is, in fact, a reality. In the event that Nezuko does assault another human, myself as well as Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka shall atone by committing seppuku." - Urokodaki
Tearing up from his eyes, Tanjiro felt his shoulders and heart become heavier with his new burden's weight. Not a burden, a promise! One that carried a contract and commitment to his comrades' lives. Shall it be broken? Then death does them part.
Though Sanemi felt his blood begin to boil. How can the master just turn their way of life upside down for a demon?! "Who cares how they choose to end their lives? Fire! Hanging! It's all the same! It doesn't guarantee our safety!"
"Shinazugawa is right! If she kills a human, we can't turn back the clock! That person will be lost forever!" Rengoku added.
Hearing the cries of his children, the master put the probability into a fair perspective. "You do have a point. We can't prove that she won't attack humans. It's uncertain. But, it is also uncertain that she will attack humans. Here is what we do know; she has been abstinent for over two years And four people can vouch for her with their lives."
'A fourth?' Tanjiro thought.
"Master!" Rengoku once again spoke up. "You say four people have vouched for the boy! But you only mentioned three!"
"Ah, yes, you are correct." He nodded. "The letter itself only came from the three. The most recent fourth happens to be another former Hashira who is here with us today."
'Another former Hashira?!' Who has Tanjiro met that could be another Hashira? He's been all across the lands and training for the last two years!
The Hashira slightly raised their heads in concern. A past comrade of theirs was here?
"But, Master, why would a former Hashira be here? If their old pillar is currently being upheld by one of us, how will that work? Who were they to say that ending their service wasn't peaceful enough for them?" Gyomei asked.
All of these questions were easily absorbed by the patient master. "I was just as surprised as you. But, greater threats are coming with this age. A powerful demon of astronomical proportion seems to also be making moves on the land. He possessed a long sword rumored to be able to cut through space and time itself. I would like to remind you, that similarly, Tanjiro Kamado has seen the face of this demon; just like he has seen the face of Kubutsuji."
GASP!
Everyone recoiled at the news, their gazes immediately targeting Tanjiro.
"Impossible!" Tengen shouted. "Not even a Hashira has crossed paths with him! And another demon of similar proportion?!" Kneeling to Tanjiro, Uzui frothed out the mental mouth for knowledge. "What did he look like?! What are his powers?! Where did you see him?!
Sanemi began to shake him. "What was Kibutsuji doing?! Did you find his secret hideout?! Answer me! Come on! Tell us his powers!"
Raising a finger to his mouth, everyone immediately silenced, returning to a bowing kneel. "Speaking of that man, we know he has sent pursuers after Tanjiro. While his goal may be to silence Tanjiro, now that he has finally revealed himself, I wish to seize this opportunity. I also believe something is happening to Nezuko that Kibutsuji never saw coming. Do you agree with me now?"
"Master." Tomioka inquired, sensing the rising tension. "May you please introduce this fourth reference to us, as they are here with us. Aren't they also here to join the fight against Kibutsuji and this other demon?"
"You are correct." The master nodded towards the girls.
"Please, Former Hashira, step forward."
Step… step… step… step…
Tanjiro angled his eyes at the strapped leather boots of the approaching man.
The other Hashira slowly lifted their gaze, seeing a shockingly young face painted by the sunlight.
Gasps arose from every member, starting from the Sanemi, all the way across the yard to Giyu. Speaking of the water Hashira, he couldn't help but feel somewhat proud that they actually committed and pulled through. The master looked up at the taller slayer's white hair and smiled. "Welcome back, Dante." FORMER ARMS HASHIRA: DANTE.
"Mr Dante?" Tanjiro groaned. 'He was a Hashira?!'
"Dante…" Sanemi shook, containing his fury underneath his piercing gaze. "Nothing to say to us? Deserter?"
Though, Dante didn't speak. He didn't even make eye contact with the rest of his old comrades. Most of them frowned at his arrival, the only smiles being from Rengoku and Mitsuri.
"It is good to see you again, Dante!" Rengoku shouted. "But, I am afraid you may not have a place here! Our new Arms Hashira, Lady, is keen on remaining as our current Arms Hashira!"
Dante just blinked. "Well isn't that one way to welcome me back? I guess it's good to see you too, Kyojuro. How's the leg?"
Rengoku patted his thigh. "Good as new! I have made a full recovery!"
"Why is he allowed to even set foot on these grounds, Master?" Obanai hissed. "Second of all, the next thing I loathe is cowards and deserters."
Mitsuri, on the other hand, became overcome with bliss; her face flushed red. 'Even after two years Dante still looks so incredibly handsome! He's so cute! Those eyes! His hair! And his muscles without a shirt are so defined!'
"He's a renegade! I don't care how flashy he is. Even his extravagant style isn't posh enough to hide his true colors!" Tengen argued.
Dante's eyes, having previously remained looking straight ahead, slowly lowered towards the insect Hashira. He expected to see her looking away only to meet her subtly disturbed gaze. Instantly both their eyes returned to looking away from one another.
"I understand your grievances. May I also include that Dante himself has come face to face with the same demon that Tanjiro Kamado has? He has faced him in battle and even wounded him. While his unapproved departure has been sanctioned, he will not be returning to his pillar. Though unorthodox, his knowledge and aptitude will only strengthen us as the page turns on this new chapter of the world." The master kindly informed his children.
"I'm afraid I don't agree with this, Master." Sanemi snarled. "For the demon, if it were human, there would be no question that I would spare it. But, after all, we have gone through, after losing countless of our brethren! Now we're asked to house a demon? Speaking of brethren, now we are supposed to just welcome back someone who walked out on us? Insulting and abandoning us so easily! It's unacceptable!"
The master nodded, Sanemi visibly taken back. It was only Dante's smirk that made the last string of restraint snap in his mind.
Drawing his blade, Sanemi slashed his forearm, blood dripping from it. Amongst the erupting confusion from all the Hashira, he suddenly stood on top of Nezuko's box, watching his blood drip into the box. Determined to prove a point, he ignored the Master's sigh of disapproval. For the safety of his brethren and this world, he would show the master how depraved Nezuko truly was! "Hello, demon! It's time for your dinner! No need to hold back!"
No response.
"Show us your true colors!" Sanemi demanded. "Then I'll destroy you right here!"
"GET AWAY FROM HER!" Tanjiro screamed, flailing around in his restraints.
"You know, Sanemi… it is daytime." Dante broke his silence. "It will only show itself in the shadows."
As much as Dante made him want to lash out, he did provide a mental lightbulb.
"Master, please forgive the discourtesy I am about to commit." Sanemi leaped into the shadows of the manor, discarding Nezuko's box into the solid carpet. Raising his sword, he smiled at the box, driving the sword through it. "Come on out Demon!" Sanemi taunted.
"STOP IT!" Tanjiro shrieked. "WHEN I GET MY HANDS ON YOU ILL FU-
THUD!
Obanai struck Tanjiro's back with a flying elbow.
"Come have the blood you love so much!" Sanemi raised the blade again, ready to continue torturing young Nezuko. Then he felt a sudden tap on his shoulder. "What do you-?"
THWACK!
Sanemi tumbled backward from a direct punch to the nose, blood squirting down his face. "Agh! Dan- Dante you!"
"What's wrong? Can't pick on someone your own size!" Dante taunted with a smirk. "Come on, get back up. You know you wanna." But once Sanemi stood up, Dante grabbed him by the bleeding nose and tossed him aside.
'Dante- he just-' Tanjiro barely kept his thoughts in line, struggling to breathe.
Mitsuri covered her mouth, shocked.
Sanemi slowly rose to his knees, only for Giyu to hold him back by the shoulder.
"There are other ways to prove things without lashing out at the innocent." Dante used his other hand to politely knock on the wooden box. "Hey there little lady, it's me! Mr Dante. You can come out, I promise I won't hurt you. The big bad meanie is too busy soiling himself to hurt you again."
The door to the box was slowly opened before the girl rose to her feet. All eyes fell on the two as it was now Dante and Nezuko alone in the shadows. He presented her with his hand, soiled by Sanemi's nosebleed. It dripped, one by one onto the ground.
"Easy does it, little lady. I know you're stronger than this." He encouraged her.
But Nezuko frothed from the mouth. Her veins protruded from her head, pulsating at the sight of the blood on Dante's hand. She left her box and slowly approached him, salivating more rapidly.
'Don't mess this up for yourself.' Dante mentally pleaded. 'Don't make me have to put you down in front of your brother.'
Meanwhile, Obanai pushed more into Tanjiro's back the harder he struggled.
"Iguro," Shinobu spoke up. "You're being too rough. Ease up a bit, will you?"
"This is because he's trying to escape." Obanai justified himself. He felt Tanjiro struggle more and more with his escape.
While the others narrated the unfortunate fate of Tanjiro Kamado, Dante held his hopes high for Nezuko. Despite her salivating and looking more and more violent, they couldn't give up yet. However, Tanjiro focused on his strength, beginning to scream a vicious battlecry. Before he could be caught, the slayer broke free of his restraints, shocking Obanai and Shinobu nearby.
"Tanjiro!" Shinobu shouted.
Obanai tried to strike, but halted, noticing a familiar silver hand cannon pointed straight at him. 'Would he actually-?' The shock spared Tanjiro enough time to get up and run. "Mr Dante! Nezuko!"
At that moment, Nezuko faced the bloody hand, its riches and scent driving her wild. But, there was bliss. A sudden chill of bliss overcame her. She remembered that day she first met Dante. The day she nearly killed her brother. The snow, his begging, and even the sounds of roaring thunder from those guns. But, there were the moments of Urokodaki sitting with her, convincing her that all humans she laid her eyes on were family. Her own family growing up. Like the pink of the Sakura trees, there was beauty in their existence. Humans were more. They weren't food. They were family. An oath to protect them, every last one!
Taking one more step toward Dante, she looked at his hand and shook her head, turning away.
All the Hashira gasped at this sudden display of unorthodoxy
"She refused?" Shinobu couldn't believe it.
"It appears so." Lady shuttered.
"Atta girl." Dante pulled his hand away.
"What happened?" The master asked, unable to see. He faced the direction of Dante, trying to scan the scene with his blank and dullened eyes.
"The demon girl refused the blood even after being stabbed three times and Dante's bloody hand in her face. The blood he got was from punching Shinazugawa in the nose."
The master… smiled.
"Lower your gun, Dante. It's insulting me." Obanai spat.
Sanemi on the other hand broke free from Tomioka's grip but stayed put. "Let go of me. I don't know what you are even thinking anymore."
The master, content with this outcome, turned his smile to a relieved Kamado. "Tanjiro, despite what has happened here today there are still those who cannot accept Nezuko. Work towards changing their minds. Prove to them that you and Nezuko can be helpful to our cause by fighting as demon slayers."
Moved by this request, Tanjiro bowed, planting his hands and knees on the ground. 'What is this feeling? It's like I'm floating. Is it because of his voice that I feel so light?"
"Go out and defeat a Twelve Kizuki. Do that, and you will be accepted by all. Your words will carry more weight as a result." The master motivated young Kamado.
"Alright!" Tanjiro rose to his feat. "My sister and I will defeat Kibutsuji and his sword-slicing demon! I assure you, we will strike them down and stop this endless cycle of misery!" He proclaimed.
Dante started to snicker, Tanjiro turning red from embarrassment.
"That seems a bit ambitious for you. Let's start by defeating a Twelve Kizuki." The master chuckled.
"Yes sir." He choked.
Mitsuri held back her laughter, Shinobu soon giggling on the lowdown. Everyone but Sanemi, Obanai, Giyu, and Muichiro were holding back laughter. While entertaining, it was ridiculously adorable to see such ambition. Even the nativity.
"It goes without saying that the Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps have phenomenal skills. They have trained themselves to the brink of death and have defeated it, as well as those of the Twelve Kizuki." It was quite interesting to hear the master support this ambition while also consoling Tanjiro. This was all possible in his eyes.
"Yes!" Rengoku cheered. "A noble pursuit!"
"That is why the Hashira receive utmost respect and special treatment. So, it would be best for you to mind your manners when addressing them, Tanjiro." The master instructed.
"Yes, sir." Tanjiro obeyed.
"Also, Obanai and Sanemi. Please don't torment the young ones too much.
"As you wish." Obanai bowed, slightly weighed by the embarrassment of rash behavior.
"As you wish." Sanemi followed.
"There is another thing I wish to discuss. That involves Sanemi and Dante."
Both white-haired slayers felt a chill run down their spine. Was this going to be like a kindergarten where they were forced to shake hands and make up?
"But, for now, we have concluded our business with you, Tanjiro Kamado. You may step back." The master nodded.
Shinobu, though, seized this opportunity. "Master, if you may, I would be happy to take Tanjiro and Nezuko into my abode!"
"Eh?" Tanjiro exhaled.
Clap! Clap! "Take them away please!" She smiled through the command.
"PARDON ME FOR CUTTING IN FRONT!" The kakushi bowed before the master and the Hashira before hoisting Tanjiro into his grasp and bolting off. Another Kakushi approached a box-rested Nezuko, hesitant to take her into her grasp.
"It's ok, she won't bite." Dante sneered. "I'll see you around, little lady."
Nezuko watched him wave to her, looking at her hand before opening and closing it back to him as a wave. With the box closed up and loaded onto the Kakushi's back, they were also off.
"And Tanjiro, give Miss Tamayo my regards."
Before he could protest anything, those words zipped his lips right up. 'Is that right? Did I hear him say, Miss Tamayo?!'
"Now, let us continue with our business." The master initiated as the two Kamados were carried away to the Butterfly Mansion. "Dante, while his Hashira status will not be reinstated, will be given the title of veteran. So, I ask that any past grievances you have may be put aside for the sake of our cause. I especially ask you to do this for me, Sanemi."
"Veteran status?" Sanemi restrained his snarling, a muffled voice coming from his hand holding his nose. "After defending a demon, deserting the corps, and breaking my nose?!"
"Quit being a baby," Dante muttered.
"A BABY?!"
Putting his finger up, his gesture brought both Dante and Sanemi to kneeling silence.
"While I disagree with the violence displayed here today, I do recall you, Sanemi, taking your stance to try and prove a point without my approval." The master added.
"Yes, Master. I'm sorry, Master, it won't happen again." He assured him.
"Very well. Then I think it is fair to label Dante's actions as 'corrective measure'?" The master asked.
Everyone had a different opinion of what took place. Was Sanemi's nose really broken? Was the tension between the two able to be settled? It was clear that most of the Hashira still held a grudge against their past companion. However, it was clear this meeting wouldn't advance with everyone not on the same page about this.
"Master, may I speak?" Dante asked. Once the nod of approval was given, he stepped up. "Listen, I couldn't care less what you all think of me. For all I know you're jealous that I was the best among all of you. Hell, I think I could have taken most of you with my arm tied behind my back and blindfolded. As fun as it sounds, that's not why I'm here. While you think I've been scratching my butt and raking in cash for the last two years, I've been tracking a very dangerous demon that threatens this world. They want to take the demon world and merge it with ours to be taken over and destroyed. They're going around the world now, unlocking various keys to open the 'portal to hell' as they say. I've fought this demon. I know his abilities, his weapons, and his motives. I know he's a brainwashed and sad puppet for Kibutsuji and is currently blind as a bat."
"In the literal sense or…?" Mitsuri asked.
"In the sense that he's lost his mind. I know I can't put the right words together to make you all magically like me again, and as I said, I don't care." Smirking, Dante looked at all the faces of the disapproving Hashira. But, seeing the master turn to him, lit a fire under his but to cut to the chase. "I'm here to work with you to bring down the idiot demon and Kibutsuji. I'll also be monitoring Nezuko and making sure that she stays true to herself. If she does attack another human… I'll put her down myself. That's my promise to you. I can't make up my leave to all of you. I don't expect you to forgive me. I just ask for us to be able to work together on this one. Once we crush both demon dictators, I'll get out of your hair."
…
…
…
"Is that how you truly feel?" Shinobu's voice cut through the air and smacked into Dante's heartstrings. "That leaving wasn't personal?"
"It wasn't." He declared. "Let's just say I had a lot going on. Please."
"We all have a lot going on! And we didn't go out as unstylish as you did." Tengen crossed his arms.
"Whatever the reason, you still abandoned us." Obanai reminded him. "You're a renegade."
"A traitor." Gyomei sniffled. "It breaks my heart that you disregarded us so easily. Were we not family enough?"
Dante rolled his eyes at his slander. "No, Gyomei. It wasn't like that, buddy."
Sanemi wasn't having any of it. "I call that absolute bullcrap! Not personal?! You have to be kidding me if you think we believe you for a second! Master, I believe Dante should be banished and even marked for death for how many lives have been lost because his skills weren't utilized! But, if you want to play coy, then there's only one way to settle this!" He drew his sword, holding it out in front of him.
"A duel?" Dante snarked. "You want to lose that badly?"
"You're unprofessional, a disgrace, and a sad excuse of a Hashira! I'd take pleasure in defeating you in a duel." Sanemi declared.
"I'm sorry, Dante, Sanemi, but I don't see a reason for senseless bloodshed of our own in a time like this." The master added. "I forbid it."
"Call it a friendly competition." Sanemi corrected. "Just two Hashira sparring or training one another. If Dante wins, then he gets to stay and keep his dignity. If I win…" Sanemi's bloody smile had a maniacal glow. "...I'll destroy you. I'll destroy you so bad you'll never show your face anywhere in the world ever again. Besides, we should see what skill level Dante is at since he gloats that he is the best."
"Shinazugawa…" Shinobu protested.
"I accept." Dante snarled.
Silence bound all the Hashira.
"You do have a point, Sanemi. We should evaluate Dante's skills. I can't say I have seen or heard a definite report of his skills. If you both consent to this moderated training spar, then I will allow it." With a green light from the master, it seemed a duel was now in motion. "I am curious to see how you have been keeping your iron sharp, Dante."
"Sanemi's just embarrassing himself." The renegade laughed.
"Your incompetence hasn't changed," Sanemi growled.
"At least I'm not compensating for something."
"Your thunderous weapons tell a different tale. The master and others will see what a coward you are."
"So how do you want to do this? Hands only? I thought you'd learn after a broken nose."
Sanemi felt his now swollen nose, "Your face is still my canvas to carve. Blades only."
Lady rolled her eyes, "I guess there's no stopping them from acting like children."
Rengoku spoke up, "I think this infighting is ridiculous! Either you end this tension and rivalry or stop wasting time!"
"Agreed." Gyomei sighed. "I've frankly had enough."
"Well then, let's get to the duel!" Tengen announced. "I hope it's going to be as flashy as possible!"
'Dante was always so outstanding when he fought!' Mitsuri blushed. 'Shinazugawa as well! I can't fathom the thought of them fighting! That will just break my heart if any of them get hurt!'
"Dante. Let's get this over with." Giyu commanded.
"What are we fighting over again?" Muichiro blankly mumbled.
Obani rolled his eyes.
Shinobu's eyes were shaded as she gripped her knee.
"Alright then, my children, we shall continue after the duel. Let us move to a more open area." The master extended his arms.
"These are the rules of the duel," Both twin girls announced.
"Both participants will receive a blunted training sword made of wood. They shall only use that weapon. No other weapons are allowed. Sanemi, your sword will be returned afterward. Dante, your firearms and sword will be returned afterward. Both participants will spar until one or both admit defeat. This can be done by raising your arm in the air in surrender."
'Not like I'll need to surrender.' Dante confidently held his wooden sword. Quite odd that it came with its own wooden sheath. Revealing the dummy weapon, Dante discarded the sheath soon after.
"A verbal 'I surrender' or similar can be shouted. The spar will end immediately after. Failure to announce this could result in injury or a forceful surrender by collapsing or passing out. If one were to pass out during the spar, the opponent shall back away and allow the Kakushi to serve the defeated."
'They'll need the entire butterfly mansion just to get a pulse out of Dante when I'm done with him!' Sanemi mentally screeched. Remaining in a taito draw stance, his gaze never once left his enemy.
The remaining Hashira posted themselves around the arena in anticipation of this. While those like Rengoku and Tengen voiced support for their Wind Hashira, others just wanted this idiocy to be over with. But, perhaps a certain Hashira was rooting for Dante. Maybe two or three in secret.
"Breathing techniques are forbidden. You may start when ready."
…
…
…
"WAIT!" Dante shrieked, halting Sanemi's charge. Everyone gasped, all eyes on him. "Before we start! I just want to say something. It would hurt my pride if I was as unprepared as my opponent here. But, I'm using my chivalry and humility to say this. Sanemi Shinazugawa, your shoe is untied."
"What?!" Sanemi couldn't believe it. Did he leave his shoe untied? Peering down he realized that he was wearing sandals; without laces.
WHACK!
"He got one in!" Tengen shouted. "Dante struck first!"
"Are punches against the rules?" Lady asked.
Shinobu looked at the master whose silence seemed to allow the use of close-quarter hand combat. "I'm afraid not, Lady."
"Dishonorable deception." Obanai hissed.
'That bastard!' Recovering from the sneaky headshot, Sanemi took the momentum to swing around facing Dante who flew towards him mid-swing. Parrying it with his sheathed blade, the Wind Hashira twirled it between his fingers and jabbed Dante's gut.
"Ack!" All the cockiness flushed away. Was Sanemi always that fast? Wrapping his fingers around the sheath, Dante ripped it right off the sword, spun around, and threw it right back into Sanemi's blade, pushing the Hashira back.
Both combatants took a moment to catch their breath.
"You have some nerve coming back," Shinazugawa growled.
"You just don't know when to give up, now, do you?" Dante retaliated. In his heart, there was a fiery roar that echoed through his words. Despite not wanting to care, Dante couldn't help but feel an urge to want to let loose. But what good would that do? Sanemi's incoming strike didn't display any mercy or say 'no hard feelings'. A swift block screamed 'I reject you now and I reject you always!'
With passion, Dante kicked the dummy sword away and spun around with a roundhouse kick into Sanemi's side. Yet, Sanemi blocked, tumbling across the rocks before leaping back at Dante. Another block by the Son of Sparda.
A parry by the Wind Hashira.
Dante capitalized off of a split second, rushing Sanemi and slamming his dummy blade against his.
A few feet apart both combatants pushed against one another in a battle of strength. Sanemi fixed his sharp, piercing eyes on Dante. His expression was as cold as ever, lips pressed into a firm line. He spat out bitter words in a whisper, each one laced with venom. "You think you can just waltz back in after all you've done? You don't deserve to stand among us, traitor!"
Dante, wearing his signature smirk despite the increasing tension, met Sanemi's gaze with equal intensity. His cocky bravado hadn't faded, though the playful glint in his eyes masked something deeper—guilt, perhaps.
The wind stirred around them, swirling dust into the air as if it sensed the storm brewing. Neither was in the mood for banter. This fight wasn't just about a wager—it was about old wounds and broken trust. Sanemi's thunderous kick separated them across the arena. With lightning-fast reflexes, he lunged forward, his wooden sword whistling through the air. He swung it with vicious intent, aiming for Dante's head. The Wind Hashira fought like a man possessed, his movements swift and deadly, as if he were wielding a real blade.
Dante blocked the strike, though barely, the force of it reverberating through his arms. "You're trying to kill me with that thing, huh?" He stepped back, fluidly dodging the flurry of strikes Sanemi unleashed. The sound of wood clashing echoed through the courtyard like thunder. Dante spun, his movements graceful but precise, countering with quick jabs aimed at Sanemi's ribs.
Sanemi parried each attack, his breath steady despite the intensity of the exchange. His focus was razor-sharp, eyes never leaving Dante. The air around him seemed to grow heavier, the gusts of wind bending to his will as he fought. He wasn't holding back—not even for a second. Every swing of his wooden sword came with the force of someone determined to prove a point.
"You think this is a joke, don't you?" Sanemi snarled, his voice filled with rage. "This isn't some game, Dante! YOU LEFT US!"
Dante's heart recoiled at the impact of Shinazugawa's spite.
You left when the corps needed you most…
You're no Hashira…
He blocked another strike, but the impact staggered him. "It doesn't matter what you think I am. Like hell, if I care," he muttered, the usual confidence in his voice wavered. "I had my reasons."
"Reasons? Sounds to me like you're making pathetic excuses!" Sanemi slid below Dante's blade, returning the cheap-shot favor and driving his shin towards Dante's groin.
Dante dodged the attempted cheap shot, his agility saving him from the powerful blow that would've been the end of the bloodline Sparda. He retorted quickly, using his demonic reflexes to leap into the air and counter with a well-aimed strike to Sanemi's shoulder, sending him stumbling back.
SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK!
Dante hit Sanemi's head over and over with his wooden blade.
Sanemi's hand shot out, grabbing the sword with all of his might. This halted the half-demon's barrage. Yanking Dante towards him, the Wind Hashira delivered a successful clothesline to his adversary, the entire attack commencing in the blink of an eye.
Dante himself became slightly disoriented. Once more, when was Sanemi ever that fast?! Was he just hiding his potential when they were Hashira-in-arms? Or was he genuinely trying to do some damage? He donkey-kicked Sanemi in the chest, just to be met with a roundhouse kick with his name on it.
WHACK!
"Any demon would make a meal out of you, Dante!" Sanemi shrieked, watching the white-haired renegade hold his face in pain.
Dante's eyes narrowed, his playful demeanor gone, replaced by determination. This wasn't just a fight anymore. He needed to prove himself, to humiliate this stuck-up brat. He rushed forward, swinging his wooden sword in a wide arc.
Sanemi met him halfway, their blades colliding with a crack that echoed through the courtyard. Both fought and pushed themselves to their limits, neither giving an inch. The wood started to give, the combined fury and resolve of both slayers becoming too much for simple 'dummy' weapons.
A sudden series of slashes, faster and more precise than before closed in on Dante. With his otherworldly reflexes, he dodged and parried as best he could. Though he couldn't predict Sanemi's sheer speed. A strike slipped through his defense, landing a solid hit on his side. Dante grunted in pain, stumbling back, but he didn't fall. He was too stubborn for that.
In the stands, the Master gazed down at the twin girls in beautifully designed Kimonos. "Please, tell me what has been happening."
"Dante and Shinazugawa have been in a near stalemate. It is difficult to declare a lead."
"So, then he has been apt at his skills, even in his absence." While the other Hashira seemed less invested in whether or not Dante had kept his skill, deep down, the Master couldn't help but feel joyous. He sees that his child has survived, gotten stronger, and returned. Despite the terms and the unprofessionalism of the ex-Arms Hashira, the master couldn't help but feel grateful.
'Seems you finally found something to keep you on your toes.' Giyu mentally declared. 'With all the demons and monsters you could bring yourself to fight, it seems someone more your speed is giving you a rude awakening, Dante.' This satisfying-to-watch, yet intriguing learning lesson seemed 2 years in the making.
Mitsuri watched intently. 'I just hope they don't hurt themselves too badly! Dante is so courageous when he fights! Shinazugawa is also a force of pure awesomeness! I would hate for any of them to be seriously hurt!' She clasped her hands together, as if ready to say a prayer.
"So, what's the beef?" Lady finally spoke up. Seeing the Arms Hashira before her going at it with the Wind Hashira so passionately was enough to intrigue her. Upon hearing no reply, she looked to her left and right. Every gaze locked itself on the fighting. Even Gyomei. Hell, even Obanai's serpent! Muichiro was even paying attention! 'I guess everyone is too invested in this brawl.' But, she decided to talk to ole reliable. "Shinobu."
…
SILENCE
…
"Shinobu?"
…
"Earth to Shinobu!" Lady called.
…
"Yes, Lady?" Shinobu covered up being merely shaken up from shock, being so honed in on the fight. But, she refused to turn her head to Lady, not wanting to take her eyes off this scuffle.
"What's the beef? I have never seen so much anger and malice in a 'friendly spar' like this before." She stated.
The Insect Hashira hitched her breath, her voice losing the cheery up-pitched beat she usually paraded. "Oh, it's nothing to worry about, Lady."
"Well, do you believe that this should be settled watching these two beat each other senseless?" Her question was nearly drowned out by the yells and roaring of the fiery force from the combatants.
This was a bit difficult to watch, she had to admit. But, a bit satisfying at the same time. Every time Sanemi landed a strike, it was as euphoric as if she was doing it herself. Her fellow Hashira seemed to scream the same words her heart begged to let out. "I believe this is best." She promptly answered Lady. "Besides, do you want to be the one to stop them?"
Hell no. Any sane person wouldn't want to get in the middle of that. Though this was starting to drag out. The top layer of wood started to lose color and both of their bodies were being painted with black and blue bruises.
"While I would be one to cheer on my fellow Hashira, I feel this spar is more seldom than it seems to lead on!" Rengoku declared.
"I don't know where you're getting that from. Shinazugawa wishes to put a traitor in his place." Obanai hissed.
"So… who's winning?" Muichiro asked.
"They are surprisingly evenly matched," Tengen added, impressed by the growth of both fighters. Dante's smokin' sexy style of brawling always managed to earn a smile from Uzui himself. "Dante still hasn't lost his touch."
"It's so sad to see them fight like this!" Mitsuri finally exclaimed. "They used to be so close! Whatever happened to talking things out?"
'Interesting.' Lady began to put some of the puzzle pieces together. "I think we are far past that point. Do you want to try and stop them?"
Mitsuri turned back to both boys no longer taking tactical approaches but just beating one another senselessly. Sanemi elbowed Dante in the nose, only to be headbutted back. Unlike Tanjiro's headbutt, Sanemi only staggered; just enough to punch Dante in the head again.
"Ummm… excuse me? Dante! Dante!" Mitsuri tried to call out. "Shinazugawa! Please! Can't we talk this out so we don't get seriously hurt?"
"Please do not interfere. You may vocalize once the spar is over without interruption." The master's twins ordered, commanding Mitsuri's sudden nod and bow of apology.
"So, what do you mean they were pretty close?" Lady asked.
"Lady…" Obanai called out. "I wouldn't waste your time thinking about it too much."
Rengoku suddenly perked up, "Oh yes! Dante used to be friends with all of us! He was the Hashira before you! The Arms Hashira!"
It suddenly clicked in Lady's mind. "So THAT's him?" The stories, the legends, the myths and gossip. Why didn't it connect when she first met him a while ago? When she was held to a standard and trying to make a name for herself- THAT was the person she was trying to shadow? No wonder such a goal seemed so close yet so far. That was why she was even more on edge around Dante. Besides… they had met each other in the past…
"Correct!" Rengoku confirmed.
"You still think you can beat me?" Sanemi spat, punching Dante across the cheek. "You don't have the heart anymore."
Dante, panting but defiant, grinned through the pain. "I didn't lose my heart. I just… misplaced it for a while." He surged forward with renewed energy, kneeing the Wind Hashira with everything he had.
Sanemi faltered, but the force of the blow sent him skidding back.
"I'm not the same guy who left," Dante continued, his voice steady. "And I'll prove it." He marched towards Sanemi, barehanded and bleeding.
"Oh yeah, before I forget. UP YOURS, Dante." Sanemi marched towards him.
Both of their angered stomps turned into sprints. The combatants' resolve manifested as battle cries, closing the distance between each other and their impending fists.
"RAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!"
CRRAAAAACK!
~Gasp~
"The spar moderation has officially called an end to this match. Both combatants…
…DRAW" The twins announced.
The master walked down onto the field, both Dante and Sanemi unconscious, with identical punch marks on both of their cheeks. "Oh my, it seemed that this ended with no clear winner. My children sure tired themselves out. Lady Shinobu?"
"Yes, Master!" She kneeled, lowering her head.
"Would you mind taking Dante and Sanemi back to the butterfly mansion as well? We can reconvene later tonight once they make a steady recovery." He requested, his soothing tone providing comfort in such a time of intensity.
"Yes, Master." Shinobu accepted. "It won't be a problem."
"Wonderful." The master smiled.
As for the other Hashira, Mitsuri covered her mouth with her hands attempting to stifle her laughter from nervousness. It seemed it all came to an end.
"Tch." Obanai couldn't help but feel disappointed at such an anti-climactic ending. "Happy, Tomioka?"
"What are you talking about?" Giyu retorted.
"Your point was proven. Personally, it ended in such an underwhelming way." The serpent Hashira spat.
"Tomioka." The Master called.
"Yes, my master?" Giyu kneeled.
"Since this was a draw, I suppose it is fair that a compromise should be made. The current wager between Dante and Sanemi has been invalidated since the spar completed with neither of them satisfying their stakes. Perhaps it is for the better. Personally, I believe that Dante has proven himself capable of defeating a Hashira, just as Shinazugawa has proven his capability in defeating Dante." Pacing past his children, one hand raised itself in a pointing gesture.
"Master, if I may," Tengen kneeled, along with the rest of the Hashira. "I think we should be allowed to vote out our own opinions. Once they recover we can take a full vote together. Despite that flashy display of skill ending in a very unflashy way, I think this would be the best compromise!"
"I agree." Gyomei broke his silence.
Rengoku nodded, "I agree to host a vote later tonight. There has been a lot happening! What do you think, Lady?"
"Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… sure? Yeah! Uh, Sure! That works for me!" Lady nodded from her kneeling position.
"Are there any objections?" All Hashira were asked to speak now or forever hold their peace. "I truly believe this is a fair compromise to decide on, I wish to hear if anyone thinks otherwise. We did entertain Sanemi's challenge and catered to Dante's actions. We were given a display of both their capabilities at the lowest level. I think it's smart that we should take a vote. Enough bias and pressure has been put on them."
SILENCE
"Well then, I thank you my children~"
Walking towards the curtains of the empty room, Tanjiro pulled them shut as the sun began to set. Once the room was darker, he turned to his large wooden box with a smile.
"It's fine now. They said it was ok for you to use this room, Nezuko." His body still ached from the injuries during the mountain battle and the fresh ones given to him by the Hashira. It made simple tasks like sitting painful "Ow… ow ow ow…"
Detecting it was safe, Nezuko creaked open the door of the wooden box, crawling out and onto the floor.
"The encounter up on the mountain was really brutal. I gotta be honest too, everything freaking hurts right now. Nezuko, thank you. Thank you for protecting me up on the mountain. And there are others too. Tomioka, Urodaki and we can't forget about Mr D- I mean, Dante. I never thought I would see him ever again, let alone for him to have been one of the Hashira. It's really something, huh? I- I need to grow stronger. Take today. If it wasn't for Dante and the Hashira's master, we wouldn't have been spared. His voice was mysteriously soothing. Just listening to him speak made my body feel light. Just who is he? And Dante. I have so many questions. The Hashira seemed to be pretty hostile towards him as well. I guess I can ask him in the morning if I have time."
Coming out of his daydream, he noticed Nezuko lying down on the floor, sound asleep.
"That makes sense. You've had a long day. Even though I'm in a world of pain, I have to keep pushing forward." Tanjiro softly narrated to his sleeping sister. "I'll be a grown man one day. I'll get old and eventually die. If you're still a demon by then, you'll be lonely"
"I promise. I WILL turn you back into a human."
Evening lanterns illuminated the master's home, occupied by all the current Hashira, even those in between those lines. Resting on their knees, each pillar sat next to one another in a semicircle, their gaze facing right ahead at the master. On each side of him was one of the twins listening in with their hands patiently folded.
He began to address their planned nightly meeting to solve two of their biggest ongoing threats among the land and their own domestic dwelling.
"As you all have reported, the carnage caused by the demons has grown more than ever. Meaning the threat to human life is greater than it has ever been. There have also been reports on a new kind of 'demon' unlike the ones we have faced. They tend to be a bit more monstrous, and ferocious, and don't go down as easily. Muzan might be in collaboration with an entity we have never foreseen before. These praeto-demons have threatened our world many times in the past. They united under the mythical demon king, Mundus. While in a world parallel to our own, these praeto-demons have made their way through the dimensional cross and wreaked havoc. That was until fate blessed us with something we never before have seen. A demon who wanted to protect humanity. A demon named Sparda." The silence in the room felt heavier once this truth was revealed. The other Hashira looked a bit unsure. Was there truly such a thing as a 'good demon'? Was Nezuko one of them?
"I fail to believe that a demon can be good," Sanemi spoke up, covered in light bruises and some medical tape. "Despite what was shown today, I don't think that demon was one of those praeto-demons you speak of."
The master shook his head. "No, she is not. I have seen them myself. They are much more monstrous and blood-thirsty. But, mainly it is the issue that Dante had brought to our attention earlier. Another powerful demon has allied themselves alongside Muzan intending to break Sparda's seal and unleash absolute chaos into our world. This would be Armageddon; the end of all life as we know it. Dante is very knowledgeable on the demon as well as pareto-demons that have been seeping into our world slowly. He has spent the last two years hunting them, learning about them as well as pinpointing and monitoring the demon that has been allied with Muzan. So, I have come to see what we can do about this. But, we should address the elephant in the room."
The master extended his hand towards Dante and another towards Sanemi.
"As we saw today, the spar between two ferociously skilled combatants ended in a draw. It was to see if Dante possessed the skills to be on par with the Hashira and be allowed to mingle among the ranks as a veteran. It also tested you, Sanemi." The master faced him.
"Me? How so, my master." Sanemi hitched his breath.
"It tested to see if your skills were up to par as a Hashira. You drew with Dante. Dante drew with you. I believe it is because you both are exceptional warriors who lift each other even in the shadow of an adversary. Despite this draw, you both were able to show one another how far you've come. But, seeing the friction amongst you children I had come to a fair wager."
A VOTE
"A vote?" Dante whispered.
"A vote?" Shinobu whispered softer, nearly being heard by her neighbors.
The other Hashira looked equally as confused and even startled.
"A vote." The master confirmed. "There are 10 of you in total. It is a matter of welcoming Dante back into our care. While not reclaiming his official pillar status, he will be a veteran and be treated as such. But, if you wish not to have him around, then I will dismiss Dante this instant."
For some reason, Dante felt a chill fire down his spine. Would the master really do that? Would he dismiss him if his past comrades found it was not in their best interest to welcome him back? "I understand, Master."
"Very well. Tengen Uzui." The master called.
"Well, despite his duo ending in a not-so-flashy manner, his style was smokin' and sexy! If you promise not to abandon us again, you have my vote!" Tengen declared, matching Dante's growing smile.
"You have my word, Tengen. All of you. You have my word." Dante softly declared.
1 vote for Dante, 0 against
"Kyojuro Rengoku."
Rengoku looked towards Dante. "I will take your word and rest it in my heart! I forgive you, Dante! You performed outstanding today and it is good to have you back!"
2 votes for Dante, 0 against.
"Lady."
"No. He betrayed the corps, yes? I remember the disarray he left you all in when I became the Arms Hashira. Plus, I still haven't forgiven him for the pocket dirt. So I'm sorry, Dante, it's not personal." Lady crossed her arms.
"Kinda sounds personal…" Dante muttered.
2 votes for Dante, 1 against.
"Shinobu Kocho." The master called out.
Dante held his breath, refusing to turn his head to face her as each moment ticked away slowly and agonizing. Anticipation filled the room, even stronger than the silence.
Shinobu herself didn't think she would be called on this early. All eyes were on her. All besides- Dante? Why didn't he look at her? This was obviously deliberate. It only created more nervousness. But, composing herself, Shinobu did what she felt was best at that moment.
"Against." That was all she managed to whimper.
'Expected…' Dante internally sighed.
2 v 2
"Mitsuri Kanroji."
Mitsuri lit up, "Oh I would love to have you back Dante! I'll take your word for it! Welcome back! We have so much to talk about and catch up on! I want to know how you've been!"
3 v 2
"Muichiro Tokito."
"Uhhhh nah. I don't even know why we are voting…" He murmured.
Dante looked like he'd seen a ghost, "So are we just counting that as a vote? Is he even ok? Or like, fully present?"
BONK!
Shinobu bonked Dante into silence.
3 v 3
"Gyomei Himejima." The master's soothing voice alerted the taller man.
"While it is a pleasure to have the Arms Hashira pillar to return and his skill still refined, there is plenty of room for improvement. I'm sorry Dante, but deserting the corps hasn't yet left my range of forgiveness. Against." Gyomei started to cry.
That denial hit just as hard as Shinobu's. Why? Wasn't he always cool with Gyomei? Did it really affect him that much? Gasp! Was Dante learning that his actions have consequences…?
3 v 4
"Iguro Obanai."
"Against. He's a traitor, deserter, and a slime. Treacherous. How do I not know you'll get up and leave us in the heat of battle? Is your word all you have to give me? If it is, then I find it pathetic that you even try." Obanai spat pure venom with every word. His passion was enough to even take the half-blooded demon hunter by surprise.
3 v 5
"Giyu Tomioka."
Once the master called him, he nodded once. "Thank you, Master. I vote to allow Dante back into our company. As you said, he has valuable information about Muzan and the Demon that is helping him. He and the young man, Tanjiro, are both the keys to our success in bolstering the probability. Dante may have fallen short, but from personal experience, I can vouch for his effectiveness."
4 v 5
'Giyu…' Dante least expected Giyu to actively fight for his sake. Despite them having a deal and Dante getting paid to help, those words sounded genuine. He didn't expect to be trying to get back among the ranks. But even his help alone was tested by those he once called 'friends.' They didn't deserve that abandonment. They didn't deserve the back that was turned on them. But, they also didn't deserve to be dragged down with his demons.
"Lastly…" The master announced. "Sanemi Shinazugawa."
…
SILENCE
…
If Dante hadn't learned the meaning of 'cooked', he just shook hands with an in-person introduction to the very essence of the word.
Finished.
Sanemi's eyes remained wide open, looking over his own bandaged nose and bruises. Was this really a question? He was the final vote to tip the scale. Why would he allow Dante, who humiliated him, to stay amongst them and mingle like nothing ever happened? It was obvious, he was no good.
"Dante," Sanemi growled.
"Just say it already and I will show myself out." Dante stood up.
"Stay." The Wind Hashira boomed. "My vote is for Dante to stay. I understand my fellow Hashira are against his presence. I am as well. But he has valuable information that can help us stop what's ahead. Look at our ranks of the new demon slayers. The incident on the mountain showed us that whoever is signing off on them is the least bit competent. You would have thought a trainer ought to know better than to send off a rookie against a lower moon. Tch. They don't seem to be getting better. Dante is unlike those rookies. His presence helps."
"Also that new boy Tanjiro!" Rengoku called out. "Despite him just joining, he has had the opportunity to face a Twelve Kizuki! I am a bit envious of such a rare anomaly!"
Tengen chuckled, "Besides, he did manage to land a mean headbutt on you. On top of that, you also drew with Dante in a battle of mere fists. You both appeared subhuman. You got each other good!"
Looking away, Sanemi finished, "So, I vote to keep Dante around. But that doesn't help us. It's an even tie."
"You are correct, Sanemi." The Master nodded. His smile was blissful contrary to the shock everyone else showed. No one anticipated his answer. Progress. "I open this opportunity up to see if anyone would like to change their answers. It can go one way or another. I assume the ones who chose to let Dante stay are keen on their answer, yes? So, let us look at those who haven't forgiven him."
…
…
"No? Well, then I suppose I shall break this tie. I vote for you to stay, Dante." The master announced.
Dante immediately kneeled, "Thank you."
Sighs of relief erupted around the room.
The master smiled widely, extending both arms out to all of those blessed enough to be in front of him. No, he was blessed to be in their presence. All of them, with love. "All of you. Each and every one of you that I have assembled created the best unit in action since the first swordsmen were selected. Each of your talents and skills has pushed us further ahead into the future. My beloved children. I look forward to seeing your success."
"This envelope feels kind of heavy, are you sure Giyu?"
After the master disbanded the meeting, Giyu and Dante snuck around the corner to finish their transaction. Giyu reached into his uniform, retrieving a heavy envelope full of cash in Japanese Yen.
Dante could count about 200,000 Yen inside of there. USD 2,000.
"You said you wouldn't protect Nezuko for free. I'm simply paying you for your services. If it's not enough I can get you more." Tomioka declared.
"I didn't expect you to actually pay up." Seeing his partner's glare, Dante chuckled. "But, I knew you'd come through for me. You're a man of your word."
"But, are you?" Giyu inquired.
"What do you mean?" Dante tilted his head.
"Are you a man of your word? Are you going to remain by our side until our job is done? Will you protect Nezuko until the end? Will you do whatever it takes, no matter how ugly it gets to ensure that girl lives?"
"Whoa whoa whoa, Giyu. Relax. You got the moolah so I'm not going anywhere."
"I feel like you're not taking this seriously, Dante."
"What makes you say that?"
"I know you. We got very lucky. I don't know why Sanemi voted for you. In reality, you should be on the high road far from here. But, we will take the break that fate has given us and run with it. All I ask you is that you don't blow it this time."
"Giyu, Giyuuuuuuuu. You worry too much. I'll catch you around Sir Frownsalot. Learn to smile from time to time." Dante snarked, placing the envelope in his jacket pocket. "Pleasure doing business with you." Tuning out the Water Hashira's scoff, he spun around and walked along the dark patio, the moon guiding him along the master's house. 'Leave again? Pfft. As long as you keep paying me, then there's no reason for me to leave. Who else would pass this up?'
BOOF!
"HEY WATCH WHERE YOU'RE-!"
"The master requests to see you, Dante."
Dante froze as both of the twin girls stood right in front of them. "H-Hey, sorry about bumping into you. It's pretty dark out so my eyes were a little-"
"Follow us."
"Yes." He obeyed.
The room, once filled with his fellow Hashira, lay empty; the lone occupant remaining on his knees. The master placed both hands on his thighs, only turning his head once his daughters brought Dante inside. "Thank you. You may leave us." He dismissed the twins.
Dante immediately fell to a knee and lowered his head. "You wanted to see me, Master?" How funny. The cocky gunslinging demon hunter that was just mocking Giyu Tomioka not even moments ago suddenly kept his tone quiet, respectful, and concise.
"Yes, my child. You don't have to worry, it is just us. Be at ease. I wanted to talk about something with you. Something you confided in me with long ago." The master addressed.
"What is it?"
"Sparda" He declared. "The story of Sparda is quite the interesting one, isn't it? We know demons are blood-thirsty monsters that kill humans and eat them to survive. But, a demon who had done none of that, wanted to protect this world. He betrayed his nature and sealed off a threat far beyond our knowledge. Sparda is why I believe that the girl Nezuko can be what I deem- no, what we deem a Miracle."
"A miracle?" Dante slightly gasped.
"That is what Miss Tamayo is. Her helper as well. They are miracles. Demons that break past the 'laws' or expectations of demons and use their abilities for the benefit of the world." The Master elaborated. "Nezuko could possibly become a Miracle."
"Wait, what do you mean?" Dante furrowed his brows.
"Dante, I would like you to tell me what you know about the demon allied with Muzan. Please… tell me about Vergil."

Continued...
Hey hey! This was one of the longer chapters that took to write and compose just because I had some writer's block and trouble executing an idea I wanted to rewrite over and over and over and over. But, I got it down-packed! I have been busy with life and I know, Heaven's Shining Diamond is awaiting an update. I'm facing writer's block with that as well because I wish to continue it perfectly. But, I hope that I can keep producing these great stories and crossovers for you all. I love reading your reviews and seeing your follows and favorites! As one of the only DMC / DS: KNY stories, I hope to keep pushing forward for the best!
For those who read and are reading I know the strongest choice and the most controverisal decision was the duel between Dante and Sanemi. The Hashira are near superhuman as is. We even seen Rengoku travel up to the speed of sound. This is Devil May Cry 3 Dante. He has not unlocked devil trigger and is fighting with one arm tied behind his back. This is the weakest Dante is as before the story progresses. Sanemi himself is on par with Dante in this state. If thjs was say DMC 4 or ESPECIALLY DMC 5 Dante, then yes, he would dog walk the entire verse. But where's the fun in that? Lets look at our badass Son of Sparda before he earns his stripes. Vergil has his devil trigger and is ahead of the game hense he was able to defeat Dante and Giyu in the prologue. Vergil is more disciplined. I plan to make him a soveriegn threat as he was in DMC 3. I know ill get backlash for that duel but remember. Its base Dante. He has yet to grow more. Woth love of course.
Love yall and I will see everyone again on the next update!
