AN: Well, this is the newest chapter for Adventures of the Smiling Critters! Since it is now October, I thought it would be fun to make my next chapter a spooky sort of chapter! I hope you enjoy this new chapter!
Chapter 2
Sleepover of Terror
Tonight was a peaceful and quiet night. As most of the citizens went to bed, the Smiling Critters had plans of their own as they all decided to have a sleepover at DogDay's house. They had all been looking forward to this night for awhile and were ready to have a fun time!
Throughout their sleepover, the Smiling Critters have been playing games, eating snacks, and watching movies. This all led to everyone telling scary stories. No one's story was more intense than Hoppy's. Everyone listened in anticipation as Hoppy got to the scary part of her story.
"And right when the poor woman thought she was safe, the chainsaw wielding maniac jumped right behind her and cut her to pieces, blood and guts spilling everywhere and-"
"Whoa, too graphic!" Bubba interrupted, covering his ears.
"Yeah, Hoppy! Wouldn't want to give CraftyCorn nightmares!" Kickin teased Crafty.
"Hey!" Crafty glared at Kickin, trying to hide the fact that she really was frightened by the story.
Hoppy rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Fine! I'll give you guys the censored version! The chainsaw wielding maniac managed to catch up with the victim and she was never heard from again! The End!"
"Ooh! That was a pretty scary story, Hoppy!" Bobby complimented. "That story is going to give me chills all night!"
"After hearing a story like that, it really puts me in the mood for a scary movie!" DogDay commented.
"Ooh! Another movie! I'll go get the popcorn!" Picky smiled, just wanting an excuse to get something to eat.
Suddenly, DogDay felt a tug on his arm as CraftyCorn tried to get his attention.
"We're not going to choose a movie that is too scary, are we?" Crafty asked in a frightened whisper.
"Of course not, Crafty! We can just choose a simple horror flick! Just remember that these movies aren't real and can't hurt us! Besides, they can't be any scarier than getting lost in the middle of a desert!" DogDay said, remembering the time he and his friends got lost in a desert during their beach trip not too long ago. "We can always pause the movie if you get too scared!"
"O-Okay." Crafty agreed to watch the movie.
Once everyone had popcorn to eat, they turned off the lights to set the mood. They all watched the movie for a couple of moments before a jumpscare of a ghost appeared on screen. This caused Crafty to let out a soft shriek before she hid under her blanket, trembling in fear. While the rest of the Smiling Critters weren't nearly as frightened as Crafty, they were still terrified as well.
At least, all except for Kickin and Hoppy, who both let out a couple of yawns since neither of them were frightened in the least. As for CatNap, he wasn't paying attention to the movie in the slightest since he simply laid down, sleeping on the couch.
After a couple of hours, the credits of the movie rolled and DogDay ejected the disc.
"Well, that was two hours of my life I'll never get back." Hoppy stretched before standing up from the couch. "That movie was so boring."
"I know, right?" Kickin agreed. "I could barely stay awake."
"What?" Crafty popped out from under her cover. "You two weren't scared at all?"
Kickin shook his head. "Nah! It takes more than a few cheap jumpscares to frighten me and Hoppy!"
"You know, Crafty, as an elephant of logic, I can assure you that these ghosts and monsters we saw in the movie aren't real!" Bubba assured.
"And even if ghosts were real, I'll just give them a big hug until they become our friends!" Bobby smiled.
DogDay chuckled. "Only you can convince ghosts to be our friends, Bobby! Anyway, we should probably get to sleep soon. It is getting late."
"Then I might as well get a midnight snack for myself before going to bed!" Picky announced before getting a snack from DogDay's kitchen.
Before long, the Smiling Critters went to bed after the fun sleepover they had. A couple of hours had went by before all of the Smiling Critters drifted off to sleep. Unfortunately, the night wasn't as quiet and peaceful as they hoped. Strong winds were blowing outside, along with rain and thunder. It was at this point when the house was completely pitch black, only being lit by the occasional flash of lighting.
DogDay didn't want to admit it, but he couldn't help but feel a little scared, himself. If even he was this frightened during the storm, he could only imagine how poor Crafty felt right now. It wasn't long before DogDay was startled out of his thoughts when he heard a loud noise coming from the kitchen.
With a gulp, DogDay stood up from his sleeping bag and entered the kitchen to investigate. Just when DogDay was halfway through his kitchen, lightning illuminated the house once more, revealing a mysterious figure right in front of DogDay.
"Aaah!" DogDay screamed, stumbling back in fear.
"Aaah!" the mysterious figure screamed as well in a voice that sounded all too familiar to DogDay.
"Wait a minute! Picky? Is that you?" DogDay squinted, his eyes adjusting to the darkness.
"Sorry, DogDay! I just came in here to get something to eat!" Picky explained. "I hope you don't mind!"
After getting over his surprise, DogDay breathed a sigh of relief. "N-Not at all, but I thought you already got a midnight snack awhile ago."
"I did! I got hungry again, so I guess this is my second midnight snack! I might have knocked over a few pans when I was in here." Picky directed her attention to a couple of pans on the floor.
That explained the loud noise DogDay heard earlier. It filled DogDay with relief, knowing that he didn't have to worry that someone was breaking into his house or anything like that.
"I'm so glad that it was only you, Picky!" DogDay said as he and Picky walked back to the living room. "You nearly gave me a heart attack!"
Suddenly, DogDay was caught by surprise when someone threw a pillow at his face.
"Would you keep it down? You woke us up with your screaming!" Kickin complained, sleepily.
"Oops, sorry!" DogDay apologized with a sheepish grin.
"Don't feel bad, DogDay. It's natural to feel scared every once in awhile." Bobby said. "If there is something that is really terrifying, we just have to face our fears, right, Crafty?"
In response, Crafty cowered under her blanket until Bobby could only see her eyes. "I think I'm fine with staying as far away from my fears as possible." Crafty said from under her blanket.
The booming of thunder startled everyone out of their beds, causing all of the Smiling Critters to huddle together and hug each other in fear. The storm got more intense every passing second as everyone was too scared to go back to sleep.
"Th-This is no big deal! W-We're not going to let some silly storm scare us, right?" Hoppy asked, trying not to show her fear.
"R-Right, Hoppy! We have nothing to be afraid of." DogDay tried to assure his friends. "Now, we can get through this night if we just-"
"Scary monster!" Crafty suddenly screamed, pointing at what looked like a monster claw right out the window.
Seeing this caused the Smiling Critters to scream as they all started to panic.
"Okay, this is getting ridiculous! Monsters aren't real!" Bubba tried to reason with everyone before inching his way towards the window. He took a look at the claw before letting out a relieved sigh. "See? It's just a simple tree branch! We are all just being paranoid! If there is anything I learned, it's that we have to stay calm if we are going to control our emotions!"
Suddenly, Bubba heard a tapping noise on the window. He looked through the window to see a bat on the other side of the glass before it hissed at him.
"Aaaah! Everything I learned is a lie!" Bubba screamed before running back to his friends.
As everyone cowered in fear, they were all started by a strange rumbling noise from nearby.
"Wh-What is that noise?" Picky stuttered.
"I think it's coming from my basement." DogDay said, bringing his attention to his basement door.
"Of course it is!" Hoppy said with an annoyed groan. "Guess one of us is going to have to check it out."
Gathering his courage, Kickin decided that he should be the one to go down. "Alright, looks like I'll have to be brave for the rest of us! If there are any monsters down there, they won't know what hit them!"
With that, Kickin opened the door to the basement before taking a look down. It was pitch black down the stairs, and just like that, all of Kickin's courage immediately disappeared.
"Hey, are you sure nobody else wants to go first?" Kickin asked with a nervous grin.
Hoppy laughed upon realizing how scared her friend really was. "I knew it! You're scared after all! Gee, Kickin! I always knew you were a chicken, but I didn't think you were that kind of chicken!"
Kickin glared at Hoppy. "Fine, you go down there if you are feeling so brave, Miss I'm Not Afraid of Anything!"
Hoppy took one look at the basement and started to get freaked out as well.
"How about we all go together?" Hoppy suggested. "There's strength in numbers, after all!"
Having no other choice, the Smiling Critters all walked down the stairs together. As they walked further and further into the basement, they noticed a bunch of cobwebs hanging everywhere. This forced the Smiling Critters to walk through a lot of the cobwebs, messing up their fur.
"Seriously, DogDay! Would it kill you to clean down here every once in awhile?" Hoppy complained.
"Well, excuse me! I didn't have time to clean up because I was busy preparing for this sleepover!" DogDay defended.
"Guys? What's that?" Bobby pointed a shaking finger at a mysterious object in the corner of the basement.
It appeared to be some rectangular ghost like entity that the Smiling Critters have never seen before. It suddenly made the same rumbling noise that everyone heard from earlier. Everyone was about to run away before DogDay realized something.
"Wait! Calm down, everyone! I think I know what it is." DogDay stepped over towards the mysterious object and took a sheet off, revealing the object to be a washing machine. "It's just my washing machine. I have been washing my clothes, but it has been acting up lately."
"Washing your clothes? But Dog Day, you don't even wear any clothes." Bubba explained.
"Of course I do! I like to wear a pair of warm socks during those cold nights." DogDay explained. "Look, we're obviously letting out imaginations get the better of us. How about I turn on some lights and make this place less scary."
"Yes! Please, do that! I can't take being in the dark anymore!" Crafty begged, desperate for some light.
Wasting no time, DogDay ran over towards the light switch before flicking it on. However, the room was still dark. Confused, DogDay repeatedly tried flipping the switch on and off, but nothing happened. When he noticed that the lights of the washing machine were off as well, he could only assume the worst.
"Okay, guys! Try not to freak out, but I think the storm just took out the electricity!"
"What?! How can we not freak out over this?" Crafty yelled.
"It's okay, Crafty! We're all going to be fine!" Bobby tried to assure Crafty that everything was going to be okay. "We're only standing in a dark room! It could be a lot worse than this!"
"By the way, Bobby, what's that on your fur?" Picky asked, noticing a tiny black object on Bobby's head. "It looks like some kind of raisin."
Confused, Bobby reached on top of her head and took a closer look at the object. It was at that moment when Bobby noticed that the object was moving around her paw and her eyes widened in horror once she realized what it was.
"Spider!"
Suddenly, everyone noticed that they had spiders crawling around their fur as well from all of the cobwebs they passed through. Letting their fear get the best of them, the Smiling Critters ran out of the basement, screaming. None of them were able to think straight, so they all panicked as they ran all around the house.
Before long, Crafty found herself in the attic of the house. Once she was certain that all of the spiders were out of her mane, Crafty was shaking in fear, wanting nothing more than this night to be over with already. Just when she thought she was alone, Crafty felt the presence of a mysterious figure behind her. She slowly turned around to be faced with a creature with a creepy wide grin.
Crafty let out a scream before she fell to the floor in shock. The frightened unicorn backed away from the creature, but upon taking a closer look, she was relieved to find out that it was just CatNap.
"Oh, it's only you, CatNap!" Crafty breathed a sigh of relief.
At that moment, CatNap held out his paw before helping Crafty back up.
"Thanks!" Crafty thanked before taking a look around. "It is really dark up here. You wouldn't happen to know where we can find a light source, would you?"
In response, CatNap pointed towards a nearby flashlight. Feeling a wave a relief wash over her, Crafty ran towards the flashlight before clicking it on. It didn't shine too much light, but it was still better than nothing.
"At least we're able to see now!" Crafty smiled before hearing the noises of tree branches falling on the roof. "C-CatNap? Please tell me that you heard that too!"
Crafty turned to see CatNap giving his same usual wide smile. The unicorn couldn't help but tremble in fear from being lost in a dark attic, and seeing CatNap stare at her with his creepy wide smile didn't exactly make things any less scary! With the flashlight shaking in her hooves, Crafty took a few steps forward before she suddenly tripped and got herself stuck under a nearby sheet. This caused Crafty to stumble around, unable to see anything through the sheet.
"Aaah! I can't see! CatNap, where are you?" Crafty called out from under the sheet.
Suddenly, CatNap's white pupils shrunk in horror when he noticed Crafty stumbling towards a nearby open trapdoor. If he was able to talk, he would have warned Crafty about the trapdoor. Instead, he attempted to catch Crafty before she fell. It was too late though as Crafty fell through the trapdoor, followed by a bunch of stairs. All CatNap could do now was watch as Crafty stumbled through stairway after stairway.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Smiling Critters got all of the spiders out of the house as they all tried to calm down from their terrifying experience. After what they went through, they don't think they would be able to sleep at all tonight.
"That's all of the spiders, right?" Bobby asked, desperately checking to see if there were more spiders crawling on her.
"It seems like it." Bubba said. "Hopefully, we can get through this night without anything else scaring us."
It was at that moment when everyone heard a lot of bumping noises as Crafty continued to tumble down the stairs.
"You mean something like that?" Picky asked.
Terrified, the Smiling Critters slowly crept over where they heard the sound. Crafty, who was dazed and confused from her fall stood up with the sheet still over her. Since the flashlight was stuck in the sheet with her, it gave off an eerie ghost like glow. Thinking that it was a real ghost in front of them, the Smiling Critters screamed before backing away into a corner.
"It can't be! Ghosts are real?" Bubba asked in shock.
"M-Maybe it's a lonely ghost who just needs a hug." Bobby guessed, feeling hopeful.
"This doesn't look like a ghost who wants a hug." Kickin trembled in fear.
"Guys, if this is the end, I just want you to know that you are the best friends I could ever ask for!" DogDay confessed. "I love you guys!"
"We love you too!" the rest of the Smiling Critters said in unison before closing their eyes, bracing themselves for the worst.
After a few moments of struggling, Crafty was finally able to get the sheet off of her, much to the surprise of her friends.
"Crafty?!" the Smiling Critters gasped in unison.
"Ugh. Wh-What happened?" Crafty asked, looking around, confused.
"Let's just say that you kind of gave us a bit of a fright." DogDay explained.
"Wait, so Crafty has been a ghost this whole time?" Picky raised a confused eyebrow.
Bubba shook his head. "No, Picky. Don't you see? All night we have been letting our imaginations get the better of us to the point where we got scared by a simple sheet."
"Well, now I just feel silly." DogDay commented, feeling slightly embarrassed that he let himself get scared so easily. DogDay soon paused when he realized that he couldn't hear anything outside. "Hey, I think the storm just stopped! Let's try to turn some lights on and see if we have the power back!"
At that moment, the Smiling Critters reached for a couple of lights and were relieved when the lights flickered back on. Once they were surrounded by light once more, they took a few moments to relax after the tough night they had. For the passed couple of minutes, the Smiling Critters had a nice chat with each other and laughed as they realized that tonight's events might not have been so scary after all.
"I still can't believe that we have all been spooked by CraftyCorn!" Hoppy laughed, still trying to get over the fact that she got scared by Crafty of all people.
"Yeah! Intentional or not, that was a pretty good scare, Crafty!" Kickin complimented.
"Oh, thanks, I guess!" Crafty thanked with a shy smile.
It wasn't long before everyone let out several yawns, each of them now more tired than ever.
"Okay, everyone! Let's all go to sleep for real this time!" DogDay suggested. "We're going to need our sleep if we're going to have a fun filled day tomorrow!"
Now that they were no longer afraid, the Smiling Critters returned to their beds and turned off the lights. Unlike last time, the weather was calm and silent, allowing them all to sleep peacefully.
As the hours ticked by, the sun slowly rose over DogDay's house. Despite that, the Smiling Critters weren't ready to wake up just yet. After the long night they had, they just wanted to sleep a little bit longer, not that CatNap minded as he laid curled into a ball without a care in the world. None of the Smiling Critters knew when they would have their next sleepover, but hoped that the next sleepover won't be nearly as scary as the last.
