Chapter 11: Revelations and Promises
The dining hall was warm and inviting, sunlight streaming through the tall windows and casting a soft glow over the elaborate spread laid out before Eirik and Aeryn. A lavish breakfast awaited them: freshly baked bread still warm from the oven, golden honey and rich butter, bowls of fresh berries and cream, smoked meats, soft cheeses, and eggs cooked in a variety of ways. The table was also graced with delicate pastries filled with jam, flaky croissants, and pitchers of chilled juice and spiced tea.
Eirik sat back in his chair, taking in the sights and sounds of the morning. He glanced over at Aeryn, who was delicately nibbling on a piece of fruit, his face glowing from their earlier intimacy.
As they ate in silence for a few moments, Aeryn finally spoke, his voice soft but clear. "Eirik," he began hesitantly, "I was wondering... would it be alright if I spent some time with the physician? I would like to learn more from him... perhaps even practice medicine."
Eirik looked up, clearly surprised. "Medicine? I didn't know you had an interest in that."
Aeryn smiled shyly and nodded. "I used to be a healer back in my home. It's something I've always been passionate about, and... well, I miss it."
Eirik took a sip of his tea, leaning forward slightly. "Is that how you know so much about herbs? You've surprised me a few times with your knowledge."
Aeryn nodded again, his eyes lighting up. "Yes, herbs were a big part of my work. I used to collect and prepare them, depending on what was needed. For example, lavender—it didn't grow very well where I'm from, not like it does here in Felgon. I've noticed how much healthier the plants are here, and they're so useful in medicine."
Eirik raised an eyebrow as he took a bite of smoked ham. "Lavender? I always thought it was just for its scent. I had no idea it was medicinal."
Aeryn's face brightened, and he began to speak with more enthusiasm. "Oh, it's wonderful for so many things! It helps with anxiety, insomnia, and even pain. You can use the oil or the dried flowers in teas or tinctures. And if you mix it with other herbs like chamomile or valerian, it can be even more effective..."
Eirik found himself smiling as Aeryn continued, clearly lost in his passion for the subject. He watched his young husband talk, noticing how animated he became when discussing something he loved. It made Eirik realize just how much he had underestimated Aeryn's depth of knowledge and capability. He was not just a pretty face, but a man of talent and intellect.
After a few minutes, Aeryn paused, realizing he had been speaking non-stop. His cheeks turned pink, and he lowered his gaze, embarrassed. "I'm sorry... I didn't mean to go on like that."
Eirik chuckled softly and reached over, resting a hand on Aeryn's. "Don't apologize. I like hearing you talk. You're clearly very knowledgeable, and it's nice to see this side of you."
Aeryn blushed even deeper but smiled, grateful for Eirik's words.
After a moment, Eirik added, "You know, there's a field not far from here where lavender blooms, along with another rare flower you might find interesting. I'd love to show it to you today."
Aeryn's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, I wouldn't want to keep you from your duties, my lord."
Eirik smirked and leaned back in his chair, giving Aeryn a mischievous look. "Nonsense. I could use a distraction, and you, my little prince, are a very pleasant one. I don't mind indulging in you for a day."
Aeryn blushed again, flustered by Eirik's bold words. "Thank you, my lord... I'd love to see the field."
They finished their meal, the atmosphere light and easy. As they were preparing to leave the table, the butler entered the room with a serious expression and a sealed letter in his hand. "My lord, a message has just arrived. It appears to be urgent."
Eirik frowned as he took the letter, quickly scanning the contents. After a moment, he stood from the table, folding the letter and placing it in his coat. "It seems I'm needed briefly, but it won't take long. Aeryn, go ahead and get ready for the ride. I'll join you shortly."
Aeryn nodded, finishing the last of his tea. "Of course."
As Eirik left the room, Aeryn stood and made his way to his chambers. There, his maids awaited him, and as they helped him dress, they couldn't help but gush over the attention Lord Eirik had been giving him.
"It's clear that Lord Eirik is completely taken with you, my prince," one of the maids said with a smile.
"He hardly takes his eyes off you during meals!" added another, giggling.
Aeryn blushed at their words, trying to brush off their teasing, though a small smile crept onto his face. "He is very kind," Aeryn admitted softly, though his heart fluttered at the thought of Eirik's affection.
By the time they finished dressing him in a simple yet elegant riding outfit, Aeryn was ready, and the maids continued to chat lightheartedly. It was clear they adored seeing the young prince so happy.
Once prepared, Aeryn waited for Eirik outside, his thoughts filled with excitement for the ride ahead.
