Bella stood beside the sofa bed crying. Part of her wanted to wake Edward up, another part wanted to hide away and pretend this wasn't happening.

"Bella?" Edward rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and reached for the lamp. Instead of turning it on, he knocked it off the table, and it shattered. Seconds later, Charlie came running down the stairs in his pajamas, gun in hand.

The big light flicked on, and both Edward and Charlie saw what had caused the commotion. There she stood in her grey pajamas, the crotch stained with blood.

Everything moved quickly after that. They brought her to the car, where her tears transformed into uncontrollable sobs. She'd wanted to believe Alice so badly. She wanted this baby. Life was so unfair. They'd fought so hard to survive, but in the end, it wasn't enough. Her body just couldn't support the fetus.

Bella hated hospitals and wasn't fond of being in one again so soon. She couldn't stand having to repeat her story over and over again. First to the man at the check-in desk, next the intake nurse, then the main nurse when she was admitted, followed by the doctor. All she wanted to do was go numb. She wanted to hear the bad news as soon as possible so she could get back into bed and cry in Edward's arms.

"While we're waiting for your blood work to come back, I want to run another test. This will be the easiest indicator." The doctor explained while the nurse pulled a blanket over her legs and then pulled her gown up. She looked uncomfortably between the two. Was this an ultrasound? Where was the gel and the big screen like in the movies? He pressed the device really low on her belly.

A whooshing sound filled the room. She looked at Edward as he squeezed her hand. He was smiling big, fresh tears in his eyes.

"Your baby has a strong heartbeat." The sound took on a whole new meaning. That was her baby, very much so alive inside her. She hadn't failed them. The relief was palpable. Choked up, she asked for her dad to be brought in. Edward hugged her as they waited.

"Congratulations. You're going to be a grandpa." Charlie surprised her by edging out Edward and giving her a big hug. On the way home, her giddiness wore off and sleep took her.

"It sounded just like the pregnant vervet monkey you did that ultrasound on in Tanzania. It was just wow…We didn't get a recording, but we're going to head straight to Florida, not meander, so she can get into a ob-gyn right away." Bella laid with her eyes closed and tried to guess who Edward was on the phone with. She got her answer a minute later. "Goodbye mom and dad. I'll call you tomorrow before we hit the road…I love you too."

"Did you just compare our baby to a monkey?" His head whipped around at her question and she couldn't help but laugh at his 'oh shit' expression.

"Monkeys are primates which are similar to humans in a lot of ways." He stumbled out, blushing. "Not that I'm calling you a monkey."

"Just keep digging yourself into that hole." Bella tried to keep a straight face as she pretended to be offended.

"In trouble already." Charlie walked in, smacking Edward on the back. "Welcome to fatherhood."
