I don't own reign.
Prologue
A young king watched and looked at the woman who taught him everything he needed to be Scotland's King. The older woman looked from the hills to the green fields of her beloved country.
It truly has been so long to have peace between two great nations.
"What doth wished to speak to me of, my king?" The older woman with a cane looked bored and weary.
"I am to go to England." The King spoke and then added, "Privately. As you suggested."
"Yes, to speak with Queen Elizabeth. I hear she is on her deathbed now." She walked slowly with her cane, tapping on the floors as a young lady in waiting guided her mistress to the chair.
"Aye, my lady aunt, Meg."
This woman is Margaret Stuart, Countess of Galloway, daughter of King James V and Lady Catherine Macleod.
She laughed softly and said, "They said she and I were the women truly beyond the lands. I like to admit now that Queen Elizabeth and I were the same. We both struggle and fight our way to power by surviving this cruel and lonely world of royalties. Bastards, they called us. Now it is 'Your grace' or 'princess.' Remember my King, they said Kings were born in the makings, but it is the queens who shape nations. Understand?"
Before he could say anything, a violent coughing fit attacked her. "KOFF! KOOF!"
She grabbed a handkerchief to cover her mouth, and the only lady in waiting, Jane and her granddaughter to her long-time friend, quickly went to her side.
King James was about to go to her, but she waved off.
"No, my King. Tis' nothing. Just a coughing fit, nothing more." The King is not convinced, but she stubbornly orders him. "Go on! The people wanted too long for a king to arrive in England. I will be here resting and will meet there soon."
King James VI and now I of England swiftly left, but he quickly returned to kiss this woman on her cheek as if he was her son's affection for a mother.
She giggles and says, "Still breaking hearts, are you?"
He laughs and bows before leaving.
The old smile left her as she looked at her used handkerchief. She found blood on them. "Jane. I fear I won't see England at all."
Jane gasped and looked at the handkerchief.
"Get rid of this, will you?" She orders Jane as she takes her bloodied handkerchief and throws it into the fire inside the fireplace.
"I must hurry and get my things to prepare." Jane quickly gathered papers and quills with ink on the board. At the same time, the old lady of the household prepares to be undressed and confides herself to her bed.
Jane came forward and presented Lady Stewart with her nightdress. She dresses up her mistress and leads her towards the bed to be confided. Warping her in the warmest wool and fabrics as it was getting too cold for her ladyship.
Jane then turns away to get the papers and ink opened with a pen quill feather settled on the hardboard for her to write.
Lady Margaret is truly amazed at how she outlived everyone and is now preparing herself to die.
First things first, she must display the inheritances to her children and grandchildren as well manner of the estate.
When all that is said and done. She decided to make her one page to write her last confession.
She prays to god and Jesus that James will forgive her.
She decided to write her only confession.
The confession that she had played the role that brought the downfall of his mother and her half-sister, Mary Queen of Scots.
