-Chapter 126-

Hot Cocoa

Robotropolis

In his lab, Robotnik was typing on his computer and printing out multiple slips of paper as Grimer, Snively, and Eggatha looked on.

"Sir, what's the point of outsourcing and posting these inane ads?" Snively asked. "Through Roboticization and Cyberization, you can just take whatever you want to get troops."

"That only gets you so far, Snively," Robotnik pointed out. "At times, it's better and more effective to get things done the civilized way."

Eggatha picked up one of the flyers, looking confused as she looked it over.

"'Single, two-hundred eighty-two pound evil scientist looking for suitable companion.'" she read aloud.

Robotnik perked, turning to her.

"Whoops!" he let out. "Uh, wrong paper."

He chuckled sheepishly before snatching it out of her hands. "Give me that."

Eggatha chuckled, then looked at another.

"I'm glad you're actually outsourcing, Uncle," she said. "We may be able to find some new blood for the Empire. And I can make some new friends!"

"Isn't swaying half of Robotropolis to your side enough?" Snively questioned.

"She means actual living company that isn't programmed to follow her every command," Grimer cut in. "Not just Badniks."

"Hey, Metal chooses to be my friend," Eggatha defended. "Don't insult him like that."

Grimer cleared his throat. "My apologies."

"Kiss-ass," Snively muttered under his breath.

"What was that?"

"Oh, nothing," Snively backpedaled. "I just sneezed."

"Thought so," Robotnik said. "Now, I need to filter these fliers. Agatha, take Metal and have them distributed around Springtrap."

"You got it!" Eggatha took a stack. "C'mon Metal, we have work to do."

"Grimer, ensure our compatriots on the deep web get ahold of this flyer," Robotnik ordered.

"Consider it done," Grimer assured.

"And Snively…" Snively perked. "Get me coffee. After that, sort and organize all these."

Snively's eye twitched before he put on a fake smile.

"Of course, sir. I exist to serve. I live to please."

"Good. Now get moving."

Snively and Grimer dispersed to carry out their tasks, the latter grumbling to himself.

One week later…

The citizens of Robotropolis were caught off-guard when numerous Mobian birds threw the doors to the citadel open and marched in military style to Robotnik's throne room. They parted to reveal two figures in particular. One was a tall bird in a red coat, green pants with high heeled shoes and tail feathers of the same color, light orange/brown feathers, white gauntlets, pince-nez sunglasses similar to Robotnik's own, and a tall black hat with a skull-like insignia on it. Beside him was a bird around Tails' age with lime green feathers, orange-ish red eyes, and a yellow beak. His attire consisted of an aviator-style uniform consisting of a brown B3 bomber jacket, a red ascot, brown gloves, matching goggles with red lenses and brown shoes with an orange stripe running across them.

"I assume you're here about the ad?" Robotnik asked casually.

"Indeed," said the older bird. "I am Grand Battle Kukku XV of the Battle Bird Armada. This is my son, Speedy."

"Yes, I've heard of you," Robotnik mused. "Didn't the Kingdom of Acorn hire out to you as mercenaries during the Great War?"

Battle Kukku XV shrugged. "It put bread on the table.

"Alright then," Robotnik went on. "Now, tell me what makes you different from every other Mobian that has answered my ad."

"We birds own the skies!" Speedy gloated. "We're the biggest, baddest bunch you've ever met!"

"Speedy, if you please," Battle Kukku XV cut in.

Speedy nodded, motioning for him to go on.

"We of the Armada have simple goals, Doctor. Sole command of the skies. Rediscover our long lost homeland. And learn the secrets of our ancestors."

"And these ancestors are?" Robotnik asked.

"We are what remains of the Children of Babylon. I assume you've heard of them?"

"It rings a bell. An ancient culture with a reputation as legendary thieves. It's said their technological prowess rivaled that of the Ancients themselves."

"Indeed,"

"Now that's an interesting offer. Color me intrigued."

"As for what brought us to you, it's simple," Battle Kukku XV went on. "Many birds on Mobius are still scattered to the winds. We of the Armada seek to unify our race beneath our banner. And through you, that dream will become a reality."

"So you hope to use my empire as a stepping stone for your own people?" Robotnik questioned.

"We wish to unify our people under your banner," Battle Kukku XV clarified. "Give them a cause to fight for. A mutually beneficial partnership. You scratch our backs, we scratch yours."

"I'll admit the idea has merit," Robotnik confessed. "And so far, you have been the most impressive of my candidates. But just to be absolutely sure, I'd like to put you through a little... final interview."

"And that would be?" asked Battle Kukku XV.

Robotnik brought up a map, displaying an image of a remote island.

"This is Cocoa Island, the central isle of the Acorn Archipelago," he explained. "For well over a week, I've been getting Chaos energy readings. If you successfully establish a base there for my empire, while gathering any Chaos Emeralds you find in the bargain, you and your Armada get the job and will become the newest branch of my Egg Army."

"Question," Speedy piped up. "Is getting any Emeralds absolutely necessary?"

"Consider them extra credit," Robotnik replied patiently.

"Consider it done, Doctor. The island, and the Emeralds, will soon be yours."

"Excellent," Robotnik grinned. "Then we have a deal."

The two shook hands.

Knothole

At Freedom HQ, Hope gathered the Freedom Fighters in the lab.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it's with great pride that I introduce to you the next step in our crusade to protect our fair planet from the forces of evil," she began proudly. "A robotic aid, com-link, database, and cute and cuddly pet all in one. I give you... Omochao!"

She whipped off the white sheet on her work table, revealing the completed, though currently inactive, Chao-bot.

"Not bad, Hope," Tails remarked. "What can it do now that it's finished?"

"I'm glad you asked. Just let me turn him on, and…"

She picked Omochao up, winding up the key in his back before setting him down. His eyes flickered on, glowing bright orange as he floated up before the group.

"Hi! I'm Omochao!" he greeted. "I'll tell you anything you want to know. Look me up if you ever need some help!"

"Cool!" Tails exclaimed.

"Personally, I find the thing a little creepy," Johnny said bluntly.

"Hey, she worked hard on that thing," Rotor objected.

"Yeah!" Omochao chimed in. "Mistress Hope slaved over me for weeks on end! And for the record, most would find me cute and lovable."

They blinked at that.

"He can-" Sonic began.

"Think?" Hope offered. "Yeah. Nicole helped me out a lot with that. With her help, I was able to give Omochao a wireless link to the Internet, as well as the Mobotropolis Grand Archive. Anything we may want or need to know, all we need to do is ask him."

"He's the perfect study buddy," Kat remarked.

"And info hub when we're on missions," Chris added.

"I think Omochao will fit in just fine," Sally mused.

"I look forward to emotionally bonding with you all." Omochao declared.

He fluttered over to Hope, landing on her head just as Cheese did with Cream.

"I look forward to it too, Omochao," Hope replied.

About that time, Chails came flying in, waving an envelope around. He was chirping excitedly, flying right for Tails.

"Whoa, where's the fire?" Tails questioned.

Chails held out the envelope, practically shoving it into Tails' arms. Tails looked over the note, his eyes widening at the sight of it.

"What's up?" Keith asked.

"It's a letter from my parents!" Tails exclaimed.

"Whoa, for real?" Sonic asked. "I thought they were out on some big recruiter mission or something."

Tails ripped open the letter, reading it.

"They've stopped to take a break for a bit at our summer home on Cocoa Island," he said at last. "They want me to drop by for a visit."

"Well then, what are you waiting for?" Sally questioned. "Go see them!"

Tails grinned before going off to pack. Uncle Chuck chuckled as they went.

"Amadeus and Rosemary," he mused. "It's been a long time since I've heard from them."

Hope blinked. "You know them?"

"Oh yes. Jules, Bernie, and I would have been killed a dozen times over during the war if it wasn't for Amadeus' tactics. They called him the 'conductor of the battlefield' for a reason."

"So that's where Tails gets his genius from," Sally deduced.

"Oh, definitely," Sonic agreed.

"What's this about a recruiter mission?" Amy questioned.

"It was a week or so after Sally launched the Freedom Fighters Initiative," Sonic explained. "Mr. and Mrs. Prower decided to travel Mobius to recruit other people to the cause. You can never have too many people opposing Eggman, after all."

"More and more groups keep popping up," Sally mused. "I'm honestly considering trying to set up a global network so we can all coordinate. Maybe GUN can help establish something."

Cocoa Island

Tails arrived via Warp Ring, a suitcase in hand. He grinned at the sight of two older foxes with the same blue eyes as him, but with dark brown fur. The male was donned in an Acorn Army uniform similar to Antoine's with a black eye patch over his right eye, while the female had long auburn hair similar to Sally's and wore a floor-length purple dress.

"Mom! Dad!" Tails called out as he ran over, hugging them happily.

"Good to see you too, son," Amadeus greeted, ruffling his son's fur. "Sorry we've been away so long."

"Look how you've grown," Rosemary gushed. "You're becoming such a strong little man. Soon, you'll be even bigger than your father."

"Mom…" Tails let out, blushing from embarrassment.

"She's right you know," Amadeus pointed out, "and I can't tell you how proud I am every time I read about more and more of your team's exploits."

Tails smiled, chuckling

"Thanks. That means a lot."

"Come, come," Rosemary insisted, "we have lunch ready. We want to hear all about your latest adventure."

-X-

As they ate, Tails detailed the events at Dragon's Nest.

"Dragons, my word," Amadeus let out. "You certainly are leading an active life."

"I've always wanted to visit Yurashia," Rosemary admitted. "What was it like there?"

"Haven't seen much outside of Dragon's Nest, but that place was pretty peaceful," Tails replied. "And exciting. Not every day you head to sacred grounds like that."

"Perhaps next time you'll get a chance to truly explore," Amadeus mused. "If you ever do, you must take the Dragon's Road. Trust me, you won't be disappointed."

"Thanks for the tip, Dad," Tails said with a smile.

After they finished eating, Tails stood up.

"Where are you headed?" Rosemary questioned.

"My workshop down the path," Tails answered. "I've been working on a little pet project on and off for the past few months, and I'd say it's high time I wrap it up. You'll be the first to see it when I'm done."

"Just try not to spend all day in there," Amadeus advised. "This is supposed to be a vacation, and we do enjoy spending time with you."

Tails nodded. "I'll try, Dad."

He exited, eagerly flying down the path to his workshop.

Meanwhile, a sizable flying fortress was headed for Cocoa Island, and Battle Kukku XV and his subordinates were scanning the area when they saw Tails.

"It seems one of the Freedom Fighters Dr. Robotnik mentioned is on the island," Battle Kukku XV mused.

One of his subordinates was in shock. "How can his tails even do that?!"

Speedy scowled. "The only Mobians meant to enjoy the skies are the birds. Who does this two-tailed freak think he is?"

"Easy, Speedy," Battle Kukku XV said. "We'll make an example of that two-tailed land walker. His tails will make a perfect trophy for the Fortress Wall, and his death will help to prove our superiority to Dr. Robotnik."

Speedy smirked. "Sounds like a plan to me."

"Take to the sea," XV ordered. "We will attack soon."

Some time later, Tails had brought his parents to the workshop, displaying his newly completed pet project; a robotic dog best described by appearance as a disproportionate, goofy, robot Chihuahua. His coloring was light orange and grey and he had grey eyes. His head was roughly the same size as his body and he had large eyes, a large metal muzzle, a thin tail with a metal sphere at the end and a pink tongue. He let out a metallic bark, wagging his tail.

"So when you said 'pet project', you meant it literally," Rosemary nodded.

"Pretty much, yeah," Tails replied. "Meet T-Pup. The newest support unit for the Knothole Freedom Fighters. He can do just about anything."

They heard the sound of multiple small metallic objects hitting the ground, and turned to see T-Pup squatting, several nuts and bolts dropping from his rear. He stood up, pawing the nuts into a pile before looking up at Tails expectantly. Tails let out a sheepish chuckle .

"Well... except clean up after himself."

Both of his parents began laughing as well, then the sound of engines reached their ears. All three perked and T-Pup turned towards the door of the lab, growling and snarling.

"Something's come to the island…" Amadeus let out.

They hurried out, seeing the massive battle fortress swooping in.

"Is it one of Dr. Robotnik's?" Rosemary asked.

Tails eyed the insignia on the ship, a bird-like skull with a red background rather than a stylized picture of Robotnik's face, and shook his head.

"No. It's something else."

"The Battle Bird Armada," Amadeus realized. "I've crossed paths with them once or twice. Vile, cruel Mobians who have claimed the skies as their domain. What could they want here?"

Tails held up a Warp Ring, a com-link in the other.

"Whatever it is, I'm calling in backup."

Knothole

Before long, the Knothole Freedom Fighters had gathered in the main room, listening to Tails. After hearing the name of who they were dealing with, Hope set Omochao down on the table.

"Omochao, run a search for data," she instructed. "Keywords 'Battle Bird Armada.'"

"Processing…" Eventually, Omochao dinged. "Match found: Battle Bird Armada. Hired out as mercenaries during the Great War by King Max. Modern day descendants of the inhabitants of Babylon Garden, a rival culture to the Ancients. Their technological prowess rivals that of Dr. Robotnik himself."

"And let me guess, their alignment is to whomever pays them the most?" Sonic asked.

"Affirmative," Omochao confirmed. "They have three goals in mind. Conquer the skies of Mobius, rediscover their long-lost homeland, and learn the secrets of the Babylonians."

After a minute, he perked. "Hmm... that's interesting. According to recent data from Robotnik's database, he's their latest employer."

"How'd you-" Sonic turned to Hope. "Eggatha?"

"Who else?" Hope asked rhetorically.

"He began outsourcing shortly after the Meropis incident, and the Battle Birds answered the call hoping to unite the scattered birds of Mobius under his banner," Omochao explained. "Their job application, so to speak, is to establish a Robotnik Empire base on Cocoa Island, and bring any Chaos Emeralds they find in the process to the doctor."

"Sounds like Tails could use some assistance," Sonic mused.

"Count me in," Johnny said. "It's been awhile since I've been able to help on a mission that didn't involve babysitting the Brain Trust."

"Well, I hope you won't mind babysitting me and Omochao," Hope replied. "This'll be a great test of his fieldwork capabilities."

"I'm coming too!" Amy declared. "My hammer's itching for some action."

"I'll come as well," Sally concluded. "With the history between the Battle Birds and my father, I might be able to convince them that their alliance with Eggman is ill-advised."

Sonic nodded, holding out a Warp Ring.

Cocoa Island

Back on Cocoa Island, several Battle Bird soldiers had already been deployed, wielding both laser pistols and mechanical walkers. People were already scattering to the hills, the Prower family standing at the ready.

"I'm assuming aid is on the way?" Amadeus asked.

"En route," Tails replied. "They'll be here shortly."

"They're already here," Sally's voice came.

They turned to see Sonic and the others emerge from a Warp Ring.

"Just one big brawl after another with us, isn't it Tails?" Sonic questioned.

"Looks like," Tails agreed. "Eggman doesn't know the definition of vacation."

Several soldiers suddenly zipped by on hoverboards, narrowly avoiding spotting them.

"No way…" Hope gasped. "They have access to Extreme Gear?"

"What now?" Johnny questioned.

"Really high-tech methods of transportation," Hope explained. "A lot of professional skateboarders are getting into them. They come in a lot of forms. Hoverboards, skates, bikes…"

"They're almost as fast as Sonic," Sally mused. "That could be a problem."

Sonic scoffed. "Come on Sal, ain't nothing as fast as me."

"Mobians of Cocoa Island!" came the voice of Battle Kukku XV. "This is your only chance! Leave now while we still allow it! Or be killed where you stand!"

"Dad, the two tailed-" Speedy began.

"I was getting to that. Patience, Speedy." Battle Kukku XV coughed and began again. "And as for the two-tailed fox who dares to traverse our skies, surrender now and your death will be swift!"

Tails rolled his eyes. "Of course the bird brains would take issue with a flying fox."

Sonic decided now was a good time to make his entrance. He casually strolled out, getting the Battle Birds' attention.

"How about a counter-offer?" he suggested. "You pack up and leave Cocoa Island now, and my buddies and I won't pluck, stuff, and roast you for Thanksgiving dinner."

"Ah, Sonic the Hedgehog," Battle Kukku XV remarked. "An even better prize than the two-tailed abomination. Perhaps we'll hang your sneakers next to his tails."

Sonic glared at him. "That 'abomination' is my best buddy. You lay one feather on him, you better hope and pray to Aurora you can run faster than me."

"Oh, you poor deluded hedgehog..." Battle Kukku XV spread his wings. "Why run when we can fly?"

He began flying as Sonic ran off. Speedy saw Tails and made a beeline straight for him, the two flying around one another.

"I am Speedy, the sixteenth Battle Kukku of the Battle Bird Armada! And I am your end, freak!"

Tails whirled around, smacking Speedy in the face with both tails and knocking him back.

"'Freak'..." he scoffed. "Like I haven't heard that one before! Try something more original!"

"Okay, how about this?!"

He held out a hand and a fair-sized bomb shimmered into view. Tails went wide-eyed as Speedy grinned, throwing the bomb like a baseball.

"Catch!" he declared.

Tails immediately went on the defensive, dodging the bomb even as Speedy began lobbing more.

"Warning!" Omochao piped up. "Bombs are pressure sensitive. Will explode on contact!"

"Don't let the bombs touch you or you'll be blown to bits!" Hope translated.

"Thanks for the heads up!" Johnny shot back.

Speedy kept going after Tails, the two trying to outmaneuver the other in flight.

"You don't belong in the air, Tails!" he ranted. "The sky belongs to birds, and birds to the Battle Bird Armada!"

"Oh yeah?" Tails shot back. "What about bats? Bees? Flying squirrels?"

"At least they have something resembling wings."

"Yeah, well, who put you in charge of the sky? It's free air!"

"We birds were made for the skies! It's ours by right and we will defend it from abominations like you!"

Amadeus drew his sword, clashing with several Battle Birds.

"You're outnumbered, old man!" one ordered. "Give up!"

"You'll find that numbers mean very little when my home is threatened!" Amadeus shot back. "En garde!"

Sally and Johnny stood back to back, clashing with their Ring Blades and staff respectively.

"All of you, listen to me!" Sally cried. "Whatever Dr. Eggman offered you, he won't keep his end of the deal! You're nothing but pawns to him!"

"Do you take me for a fool, Princess?" Battle Kukku XV scoffed. "Dr. Robotnik is a means to an end for our cause, nothing more. Just as your father was when we offered him our aid during the war."

"You're a complete idiot if you think that Eggman's gonna just let you go on your merry way once you have what you want!" Johnny shot back.

"So long as our people are reunited once more, we will be content," Battle Kukku XV retorted.

"Ever stop to think that maybe the rest of the birds on the planet don't want to be united under you?" Sonic offered as he ran circles around several Extreme Gear riders.

"Ever stop to think that nobody gives a damn about your opinion?" one rider shot back.

"How about we show him that he's not the fastest thing alive!" his partner offered.

"Good luck with that!"

As Sonic ran, the Extreme Gear soldiers followed, only for Omochao to suddenly shoot up in front of one's face. He scowled, swinging at him and brushing him off before looking ahead... and had just enough time to scream before he plowed right into a tree. He slid down painfully, upon which Hope emerged from behind another tree and snagged his board.

"Mind if I borrow this for a while?" she asked casually. "Thanks."

She hopped on it, Omochao plopping onto her head. His arms extended, wrapping under her chin.

"Safety first!" he insisted.

Hope grinned. "I knew installing the helmet mod was a good idea."

She took off, shakily at first, but soon got the hang of it. Speedy pounded into Tails, knocking him to the ground.

"Time for the hero to go out with a big bang!" he exclaimed.

He summoned another bomb before chucking it at the downed fox, aiming right for his twin tails. Sonic saw that and quickly made a U-turn, rushing for his friend.

"NO!"

He kicked the bomb and it exploded on contact with his foot. The explosion sent him flying back, skidding across the ground. Sonic looked up, seeing his left leg was now covered in burns and bent in the wrong way from the blast. He looked at it, wide-eyed and a strained look on his face, before managing a single, wheezing word:

"...Whatever."

With that, he passed out.

"Sonic!" Tails cried.

"Oh, this is perfect!" Speedy declared. "Dad! We got the hedgehog!"

"A worthy prize indeed," Battle Kukku XV mused. "Grab him! We will leave the rabble for another day!"

Speedy swooped down, scooping up the prone Sonic before flying back to the fortress. The remaining troops retreated as well as the fortress flew away.

"No! Sonic!"

Tails made to follow, but Sally grabbed him.

"Tails, wait!" she insisted.

"I can't leave Sonic hanging!" Tails objected. "He'd do the same for any of us!"

"Easy," Sally soothed. "We'll get him back. But we need to be smart about this."

"They work for Eggman, Sally!" Tails cried. "They'll hand him over and the doc will roboticize him! Or kill him! And I don't know which is worse!"

"You think Eggman will pass up a chance to lock Sonic up and gloat in his face over his little victory?" Hope pointed out. "We'll have plenty of time to plot a rescue."

"Exactly," Sally agreed. "We'll find him and save him. But we need you at the top of your game to do that, Tails. So calm down and focus."

"Eggman sent them to establish a base of operations," Johnny cut in. "This island is your summer home. Where would he set it up?"

Tails took a deep breath, composing himself before looking out. "Past the Polly Mountain chain, in the open waters behind it."

"Then that's where we need to go," Sally decided. "And collect every Emerald we can get our hands on while we do. Sonic's leg looked pretty messed up, and he's gonna need their energies to heal in time to stop the Battle Birds."

"Let's hurry then," Tails turned to his parents. "Looks like we'll have to continue our little visit after we deal with the birdbrains."

"Go," Rosemary urged. "We'll take care of the village."

"Go save your friend, and show those birds how we do things in the Prower family," Amadeus ordered.

Battle Fortress

When Sonic came to, he found himself strapped to a table, an older Mobian owl with a long white beard in a red lab coat setting the bones in his leg before dabbing the burns with disinfectant.

"And you are?" he questioned.

"The top scientist of the Battle Bird Armada," the owl gloated. "I am Dr. Fukurokov."

Sonic blinked. "Dr. Fewer-Cough?"

"Fukurokov…" Fukurokov sighed.

He pressed a bit harder than necessary on a particularly nasty burn, causing Sonic to yelp.

"Hey! Watch the leg!" he managed. "I need that!"

"You need to hold still so I can finish tending to your wounds, you miserable rodent," Fukurokov snapped.

"Why not just leave it to rot and fall off?" Sonic asked.

"The Battle Kukku's orders. Dr. Robotnik wants you stabilized when you're brought to him."

"Let me guess, so he can spend a few hours rubbing in my face how he 'beat' me and listen to himself talk?"

"Your guess is as good as mine, but I suspect you are correct. He seemed quite pleased when he saw your unconscious form. We have done what his Badniks and servants have never managed: defeated and trapped Sonic the Hedgehog. And with this, our alliance is assured."

Sonic scoffed. "Just how dumb are you birds? Who do you think's gonna be left standing the minute Eggman gets bored? You?"

"We're far from dumb," Fukurokov shot back. "But you are if you think Robotnik will get rid of the beings who succeeded in capturing you. No, he'll keep us around, and we'll be able to fulfill our goal."

"Whatever helps you sleep at night, Dr. Fin Fang Foom."

"It's Fukurokov!"

"Whatever."

The doctor just snarled and stalked off to get the makings of a cast. As he did, Sonic looked down at his leg. It was badly swollen, covered in burns, and he couldn't twitch his toes. The fact he could see his toes really sent him into a panic, realizing his shoes were gone.

"Oh great…" He leaned back on the table, struggling to keep himself from devolving into a panic attack. "No shoes, busted leg, and no idea where I am or how to get out… And I thought the Egg Dungeon was bad news."

He took several deep breaths, forcing himself to calm down.

"Tails… Sally… please find me..."
