My Friend's Crush

He's hanging out with his girlfriends outside the main block, sitting on a bench next to the steps, the sun shining brightly overhead. He's scrolling through his Instagram feed when something Hilary says catches his attention.

"He was sweet!" she giggles, cheeks tinted pink as she tells Emily how her night went. Tyson looks at her with a slight smile as she continues, his interest piqued. "I mean, who would expect, right? He's so brash and cold all the time in college, you would expect him to be a bit rough in bed too, but he's not!"

"It's true what they say then?" the red head asks Hilary, who is sitting in between the two of them, eyes wide.

"Yeah!" Hilary nods in glee. She can barely contain herself as she spills how good Kai was to her last night. They had been meeting consistently over the last one week and by the end of it, Hilary had decided that he was the one she was going to lose her virginity to. Which didn't come as much of a surprise to either Tyson or Emily because she had always had a crush on the campus bad boy. He had a reputation for breaking hearts. And Hilary saw him as a challenge. One she claims she has managed to conquer over the course of the last one week. They had met at a rager Kai and his friends - the infamous Blitzkriegs - had thrown, which Tyson had also attended and ended up suffering a headache for an entire day after. They hooked up that same night. Tyson doubted if he even talked properly to his friend before rubbing faces with her.

"He totally makes love to you," Hilary gives Emily's hand a bone-crushing squeeze. She suddenly looks serious. "No, really. It feels like an intense experience. He holds you so close and gazes into your eyes."

"Sounds unreal."

"But it's so real. He's real." She places a hand on her chest, above her heart. "He gave me an orgasm and I am not kidding, I fell for him right then." She meets Tyson's stare. "That was the moment."

Tyson nods. He is impressed.

"It's rare for girls to have orgasms on their first time but I got one," she tell him, then sighs dreamily before turning her face up to the sky and saying. "It's because he's so big."

"Whoa" Tyson sits up straight. "You can't say that."

"What?"

"You can't tell people stuff like that about him."

"Why not?"

"Well, it's his most private part. You shouldn't talk to other people about it. You get offended when we guys talk about boobs. Do you think it's fair to talk about the size of his dick?"

"I'm not saying anything negative. It's a compliment."

"It doesn't matter if it's a compliment or not, you are objectifying him."

"Jesus, Tyson. Fine. I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize to me. Apologize to him."

"I don't think he cares but okay." Hilary rolls her eyes discreetly at him.

A couple of girls overhear their argument and word spreads quickly. Before noon, people are saying Tyson, the college best boy defended renegade Kai's honour. How noble. They shoot him weirdly proud looks and tell him how great of a human being he is for having stood up for the leader of the Blitzkriegs. The bastard of bastards. The cruel and merciless heartbreaker who went around campus flirting with innocent girls, hooking up and making them fall in with him and then rudely breaking up, all within the matter of a few weeks. Hilary was his current conquest and everyone knew he was going to make her cry before the day ended.

Tyson enters the cafeteria and immediately notices the shift in the energy of the room. The space is usually buzzing with chatter and the clamour of cutlery on the plates, but today, the air is tense. Oddly a bit quiet. He occupies his usual spot next to Max and Kenny, and looks across the room. Completely on accident.

Someone was looking at him from the opposite end of the cafeteria. A couple of dark red irises glare at him in silent fury.

Tyson's cheeks singe under the heat of the scrutiny.

The Blitzkrieg boys are sat around him. They like the farthest corner of the hall, where the wall was painted black by a club back in the 90s and the university hadn't bothered to repaint, and a long table was placed in the middle of plush leather chairs the current occupants had bought through money and family influence over the authorities. Tala's mother was the dean of the university. The rest of the boys came from wealthy and powerful families too. Nobody dared to mess with them on campus. They were at the top of the food chain. The peace had never once been disrupted since they enrolled.

Kai stares at him with his tattoo-covered arms folded over his chest. Tyson, unsure of what to do, or how to react to the perplexing stare, averts his eyes and starts eating his meal like nothing happened or was happening.

He ignores him.

The next day, Tyson finds a note on his desk in History 101.

"Meet me outside in the parking lot at 4:00 if you want to live".
