Taking Flight

"I've packed and repacked your suitcase, you have everything you need, including some things you might not need, but are good to have just in case." Alice smiles bouncing out of the closet, "Any questions?" I shake my head returning to my book, I expect her to bounce out of my room altogether when I feel the mattress dip,

"Something wrong?" I ask looking up from my page. The smile on Alice's face is gone, now replaced with a frown, it looks so unnatural on her normally happy face,

"Mare I'm sorry-"

"Not again Alice," I shove the bookmark onto my page and close the book tossing it on the bed,

"Mare it's just-" I shake my head,

"Nope, not listening to it."

Alice has been tip-towing around me since that night, which has now officially been one week. At first, she would smile at me. One night she came into my room after I had just gotten out of the shower and asked if she could blow dry my hair, and then this morning she asked if she could pack my suitcase for tomorrow, and seeing as I haven't even packed a pair of socks in the nice suitcase Esme bought, I told her yes.

"I know whenever you don't see something bad happening, you blame yourself, but just...just no Alice." She stares at me for a second before taking an unnecessary breath,

"It feels sometimes like that's all I'm good for." I furrow my brows and almost laugh,

"You know that's not true, you're a..a vampire-"

"You know Mare, we may be vampires but that's only physically we still think like you, excluding some of the older ones who've lived and seen more."

"I'm telling Carlisle you called him old." Alice smiles a real genuine smile,

"I'm sorry that sometimes I don't realize you're a real person...vampire person...vampire body, human mind maybe." Alice rolls her eyes,

"Okay Mare, don't hurt yourself thinking too hard about it." I smile at the natural flow of this conversation, no one's been this easy with me since...since I got back, everyone's been so sickly sweet and gentle as if I'll break, maybe it's because I feel broken, I feel like I've broken more in one week than I have in my whole life,

"Thank you, Alice." Alice smiles, understanding the meaning behind the quip,

"You should get some rest, we'll be leaving the house at six, Carlisle has all the tickets and passports,"

"It still freaks me out how fast you got that."

"It's easy when you know people." She shrugs as if things like this are just the most normal in today's society,

"That's scary." Alice smiles a real genuine smile and reaches forward to squeeze my arm,

"Get some rest Mare, you look tired." I am, just not physically.

"You're running with Jasper?" Alice nods, this was something Carlisle reiterated to me yesterday. Alice, Jasper, Edward, and Emmett would somehow be running to Italy, while Carlisle, Esme, Rose, and I would be flying. According to Carlisle being stuck in a plane with 70 other humans would just be too unfair for Jasper, and Alice would never let Japer run by himself, but Emmett and Edward? They're just doing it to see who can get there faster, although apparently Emmett cheats. When I asked for him to elaborate Carlisle just said Emmett enjoys watching Edward fall and left it at that.

"Goodnight," Alice stands and tucks the covers closer around me,

"Goodnight Mare." She's light on her feet as she skips out of my room, hitting the light on her way out and closing the door quietly behind her. I wait a second before tip-towing out of bed to open the window just a crack before jumping back in bed,

"Esme hates when you do that." Edward peeks in from our conjoining doors,

"Stop doing that." I hiss quickly snuggling into the soft blankets, "What she doesn't know doesn't hurt,"

"She knows," Edward rolls his eyes, of course, she knows, "She'll close it once you're asleep."

"Good to know, what can I do for you?" Edward pushes the door open before crossing his arms and leaning his shoulder against the door frame,

"Are you still mad at me?" I swallow burrowing deeper into my blankets,

"No...I don't think I was actually angry." Edward shakes his head,

"You were, but you should be, and not just at me." I take a deep breath and close my eyes,

"Edward, she was my mom."

"I know, and I'm going to leave it alone from here on out. Unless you want to talk about it, and I do think you should talk about it and not just to me-"

"Yes, I know." I cut him off, "Therapy isn't for crazy people," I repeat Carlisle's new mantra. I hear Edward chuckle and look up at him,

"He's right," I huff out a breath and roll over, plopping my head down on the small mountain of pillows,

"Goodnight Edward."

"Goodnight Mare, enjoy your open window while you can."

"Edward." I peek back at him before he can close the door, "FYI when a girl has her window open it's not an invitation to watch her sleep." Edwards lifts a brow in confusion, "That's all, close the door." I roll back over waiting for the door to close before shutting my eyes and searching out sleep unfortunately I never really find her.

"Mare." Esme's cold fingers card through my hair before settling on my forehead,

"Mmmmmm," I lean into her touch, I don't know what time I fell asleep last night but it was somewhere after 2 AM, sleep just constantly out of reach until it was clear I wouldn't be getting enough before this stupid 10 AM flight,

"Alice laid out some clothes before she left, you have some time to get dressed and come eat before we leave."

"I'm not hungry." I groan, reaching up to rub the sleep out of my eyes,

"You don't have to if you're not hungry, but I do want you to eat something when we get to the airport." I nod, holding my hands out, Esme giggles grabbing both my arms, and pulls up.

"Carlisle's packing the car, I'm going to bring your suitcases downstairs while you get dressed okay?" She caresses my cheek, I nod.

"Did Alice at least lay out something comfortable?" Esme laughs,

"I believe it's a pair of jeans, a T-shirt and flats."

"Ha," I laugh out sarcastically, "Can I switch it out for sweatpants, an oversized T, and sneakers? " Esme leans forward and kisses my forehead,

"Already did." She stands up with a smile, "But if Alice sees you later, you changed the plan,"

"Our secret." She smiles and heads for the door,

"Esme?" She stops,

"Thank you." She smiles,

"Of course sweetheart,"

Putting on the clothes Esme exchanged for Alices feels weird and I have to push away the tears threatening the inner corners of my eyes. I know Alice knows what I like to wear, she just doesn't care. Fashion is her thing and that's fine, but Esme knowing I wouldn't want to wear Alice's pick and swapping it out for something I would pick myself...I take a breath quickly exit the closet and down to the living room where Rosalie stands dressed as if she is going to New York Fashion Week instead of the airport.

"You look comfortable." She smiles taking in my baggy black sweatpants, oversized white T-shirt tucked into the waistband of my sweats, and cuffed sleeves.

"You look...very fashion-ready." Rose looks down at her outfit, tight black jeans tucked into knee-high healed brown boots, a loose pristine white shirt and an expensive looking fitted jean jacket.

"This is the most laid-back outfit I have." Rose frowns,

"It shows," I lie, "Very fashionable but very relaxed." Rose rolls her eyes and points toward the kitchen,

"Are you hungry? Esme made you something but she said you didn't have to eat if you didn't want to." I reach down holding my stomach and shake my head,

"I'm not." Rose's lips quirk up and her eyes turn sympathetic,

"That's okay." She wraps her arms around me, "It's only yogurt and fruit, you can get something at the airport." I smile and let her lead the way down to the garage. She stops to grab my coat and holds it out before opening the door. I never really got a good look at Esme upstairs but now I see that both she and Carlisle are dressed to impress...at the airport. Carlisle's in a pressed pair of khakis, leather shoes, and a very expensive-looking trench coat, while Esme's dressed in an all-white turtleneck jumpsuit, pointed white leather boots, and a long dark orange coat. She's thrown her hair into a high ponytail and even has a pair of sunglasses sitting on the top of her head, I look between the three adults until Carlisle holds his arm out,

"What's wrong sweetheart," I cross the distance to reach his hand,

"You know this is the airport right?" Carlisle chuckles opening the back door for me,

"Are we too fancy for you sweet girl?"

"More like I'm not fancy enough," I mumble sliding into the back seat,

"I wouldn't have you any other way." Carlisle squeezes my hand before letting go and closing the door. The cars warmed to the point where my cheeks reddened almost immediately and I basked in the heat for just a second more before taking off my jacket. Rose slides into the other side of the backseat and Esme and Carlisle join seconds later,

"It's a bit of a small drive to Sea-Tac if you want to nap a bit before." Carlisle smiles at me from the rearview mirror,

"I'm good." Carlisle raises an eyebrow,

"Alright, buckle up." I follow his instructions before turning to the window and watching Carlisle slowly back out of the garage and down the driveway. The house is still lit up and suddenly my heart hurts watching the house disappear behind us, as if reading my mind, Rose scootches over and pulls me close to lay my head on her shoulder.

"Relax" Rose mumbles and slowly I relax into her embrace. She starts pushing my hair back in a calming and soothing manner and I realize exactly what she's doing, sleep quickly seeks me out and I didn't stand a chance.

"Surprise." Carlisle smiles, holding out a white Starbucks cup,

"For me?"

"It's not for me." I grab it and take a sip,

"White chocolate mocha?" I smile, Carlisle nods,

"I asked them to give me something for the season and something a teenager would like."

"Whoever took your order knew what they were doing." He smiles down at me,

"Also" he holds out a small brown bag, I take it finding it hot to the touch, I peek inside,

"A breakfast sandwich?"

"I talked Esme out of taking you to one of the nicer sit-down places, the only compromise, is you have to eat the whole thing." I internally groan, I'm still not that hungry, honestly, I don't know if I'll be able to eat at all, but slowly I pull the sandwich out and take a bite, it's really not that bad.

"It's good." Carlisle smiles and places his arm around my shoulders pulling me close. I ended up sleeping the whole way here, something that still angers me, I was hoping to sleep on the plane. Getting through TSA was a breeze and now we had about 30 minutes before we had to board,

"I also have another surprise?" I look up at him and raise a brow,

"I don't think anything is going to top this?" I raise the paper cup in my hands, Carlisle just chuckles and leads me through the crowd,

"We'll see."

"You know at the airport these are more expensive than a regular store." I hold the book up to Carlisle. He takes it and quickly thumbs through it,

"So you're saying this is the one you want?" I reach up grabbing the book from his hand and put it back. It turns out Carlisle's second surprise was a trip to the airport bookstore and any book I wanted,

"No, I'm just telling you." Carlisle shakes his head, a breathy laugh escapes his lips,

"I think I'm going to get this one." He holds up a large copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, I lift a brow,

"Tolstoy really?" He turns it over in his hands,

"Something wrong with it?" I shake my head,

"No, but you're telling me in all your ancient years on earth, you've never read Anna Karenina." I choose my words carefully, with a small smile on my lips. I'm pretty sure Carlisle is not only older than Tolstoy but was also there for the publication,

"Russia hasn't always had the best history, I'm ashamed to admit I haven't read much Russian literature in my...ancient years on earth." He emphasizes that last part with a smile on his face.

"I'm shocked,"

"I'm a shocking man," He smirks, checking his watch, "We'll be boarding in 15 minutes, have you picked a book yet." I sigh and turn,

"I wish you would have reminded me to pick a book from my shelves back home," Carlisle reaches for a pack of gum and places it on top of his book,

"But then I would have taken away the opportunity for you to get a brand new book." I roll my eyes and reach for a book on the lowest shelf in the Fantasy section and hold it out,

"This one." Carlisle grabs it and holds it up,

"A Class of Kings," He lifts a brow,

"I read the first book back home." We head for the register, and Carlisle quickly pays and hands both the book and gum to me,

"Hmm, what's it about?"

"Where do I even start?!"

"Keep going." Rose pushes me forward, I turn to glance at her,

"Where are our seats?" She looks up,

"Forward, keep following Esme." I sigh but continue. Carlisle boarded a few minutes ahead of us, taking all our carry-ons. I look around as we pass the rows of orange and blue seats. This is a 13-hour flight so the seats offer a bit more legroom than my 8-hour flight to Russia years ago, but Rose pushes me forward until we pass through a curtain and into a completely different section. These seats look like little pods. Each one has a comfier-looking grey seat, TV, and little pull-down tray. Some people are already getting themselves situated and I turn behind Rose to give her a look,

"These are nice." She rolls her eyes,

"These are business class, keep going forward." My mouth drops,

"What do you mean to keep going forward?" She huffs a breath and smiles,

"Mare I wouldn't be caught dead flying anything other than first class, keep going." She places her hands on my shoulders and forces me forward,

"What?!" We pass through another curtain and it's like passing into a whole other world. Instead of little pods, their actual rooms. A few, each one complete with its own doors, I feel my eyes widen and my mouth drops. Theirs even a row of flight attendants to great us,

"I have everything all situated." Carlisle pops out of one of the private first-class rooms,

"Mare, you and Rose are right here, and Esme and I are right across from you." He points to the door he just came out of, when I don't move, Rose pushes me through,

"We'll be fine." She promises both adults before pushing me in. This little room is cozy, with two sizable chairs and a large T.V. Theirs enough room for both of the large chairs to recline, heck I could even lay down in here if I want.

"This is ours?" Rose nods, before dropping down into one of the chairs. She grabs a fancy-looking sheet of paper and holds it out to me,

"This is the menu, you can order whatever you want, it also has options for meals later." I take it and look it over, feeling my eyes once again bulge when I see Caviar as an option for "light snacks", "Mare?" Rose's voice sounds light,

"Sorry." I look over the menu at her. She has a small smile on her lips,

"Relax, I promise you everything is fine, just take a breath and sit, you can pick a movie for us to watch okay?" I take a breath and nod, slowly sinking into a plush chair, "Feel better?" I look over at her,

"I think this is the comfiest chair I've ever sat in."

The first five hours fly by (get it?) Rose and I watch two movies, I pick the first one, Titanic and Rose picks the second, Gone with the Wind. She smiles through the whole movie telling me about how she sat in a theater to see this, she held her breath the whole time but she was such a fan of the book, that she had to see it. I find myself smiling throughout the whole movie if only because Rose looks so happy watching it. When we get to Part 2, Carlisle pops in to see how we are doing. Rose quietly kicks him out and he smiles as he leaves. One of the flight attendants constantly checks in on us, she brings both Rose and me fizzy beverages before we take off and then stops by to ask if we are ready to order anything to eat. I'm not, but when the second movie is over Rose forces me to get lunch, I end up picking a fancy-looking burger and eat about half...I want a pizza. Hour six when I realize we are not even halfway over with this flight I begin to feel a little antsy, and Rose notices. She gets a flight attendant to turn my super comfy chair into an honest-to-god bed, and then she does the same for hers, together we have a cute little full bed,

"Lay down Mare." I comply if only because my five hours of sleep are catching up to me, Rose closes the cabinet windows, and turns the TV to the screen showing our progress, we are currently over the ocean. She lays down next to me, and starts brushing my hair back,

"Want me to read to you." I look over at her and nod, she smiles and grabs the book Carlisle just bought me and flips it open,

"The Comet's tail spread across the dawn, a red slash that bled above the crags of Dragonstone like a wound in the pink and purple sky. The maester stood on the windswept balcony outside his chambers. It was here the ravens came, after long flight. Their droppings speckled the gargoyles that rose twelve feet tell..."

"Mare, Mare" A hand lightly shakes me awake. I jerk away and turn towards the voice, Rose looks down at me, her lips pushed into an unsure frown,

"I'm sorry, I closed my eyes, please keep reading."

"Mare...we're here.
