The sun was starting to rise. Another day. Another day added from when the men left to fight in the war. Another day of being on alert incase of a Fire Nation attack. Another of praying…hoping that the Avatar would return too save them all. That was on the mind of everyone in the Southern Water Tribe as they awoke. Well…not everyone. Although too everyone in the world, it was a day like any other, to Katara, her Brother, and her Gran-Gran, it was a very special day. 14 years ago, Katara was brought into this world.

As Katara was sleeping, her Gran-Gran was sitting on a rocking chair, knitting robes, but also admiring Katara. She was so proud of her little girl. Katara and Sokka meant the absolute world to her, and feels blessed everyday that she is able to see her grandchildren grow alongside her. She just wished it was under better circumstances. But today, she would try to forget about that. She didn't need to force her thoughts and emotions in the back of her mind, because she just felt overwhelming joy that Katara is given another year of life. She continued knitting her robes, waiting for Sokka to arrive back to the hut.

Katara's eyelids began to open. She was able to sleep well knowing that today was a special day for her. She looked to her right, and saw her Gran-Gran smiling with so much happiness, she couldn't help but smile too.

"Happy Birthday Katara"

Katara stood up too give Gran-Gran a hug and a kiss.

"Thank You so much Gran-Gran" said Katara.

Neither Katara, n'or Gran-Gran wanted to let go, feeling great joy of just being in each other's presence…and great warmth from the freezing cold temperatures too.

Sokka barged in after hearing his sister's voice, and excitedly shouted

"Happy Birthday Sister!", running up too her and giving her a tight hug.

Katara would usually be annoyed with his antics, but she just felt at ease with her family around her, and equally embraced Sokka just as tight.

"Since when did you get so strong?" said Sokka in a chocked voice.

Katara rolled her eyes, and immediately let go.

"Are you saying women can't be strong Sokka?" she said annoyed.

Sokka carefully replied, "Nooooo"

Katara just glared at him, arms folded, feeling greatly annoyed by her brother again. She was very close to connecting with him again, but ever since her Dad left to fight the war, Sokka changed so much.

"Why don't we all just eat breakfast?" said Gran-Gran with a warm smile.

Katara immediately softened and was ready to devour whatever Gran-Gran cooked for her, but so was Sokka.

"Calm down Sokka. I know you have a large appetite but it's your sister's birthday, let her enjoy her food first."

"Sure" said Sokka in a brooding voice.

Katara just giggled at her brother's reaction but then immediately, felt the delicious smell of stewed sea prunes and fresh bread.

Her mouth started to water. To her, no food in the world can come close to Water Tribe food. Although she doesn't have as big as an appetite as Sokka, she always looks forward to dinner because everything Gran-Gran makes is absolutely delicious.

Gran-Gran started serving the stew, and gave Sokka one bread, and Katara two breads. Sokka obviously finished first and snuck to the pot to have seconds, but when he saw how little there was, he immediately felt bad and decided to leave to his sister.

When they were all finished, Katara wanted to do nothing more than to practice her waterbending, but Sokka had other ideas.

"Katara…", Sokka started awkwardly.

"...why don't I… take you somewhere?"

Katara felt skeptical at first. Sokka was always adamant of keeping everyone in the village, playing soldier. He always burdened himself with fishing and looking for supplies. 'This better not be one of his stupid pranks she thought inwardly.' Katara knew that Sokka would never let her get anywhere near the border of the village. He was too protective of her.

"Where are you gonna take me? The border of the village?", Katara asked sarcastically.

"I wanted to do some fishing since the village is running out. And I wanted to know if you wanted to come." said Sokka in a serious tone.

"Oh"

That certainly wasn't what Katara was expecting.

"Sure, I'm up for it." she said a bit surprised.

"Okay, let's go" said Sokka as he started to turn towards where he kept his boat.

"Wait…you mean now?! I haven't even gotten ready or anything!" Katara said chasing after him.

"Don't worry, you won't really need anything, since I already got everything we need in the boat."

Sokka turned around and then added "You could take a bath once we get back"

"Ok" Katara said excitidedly.

Katara was very eager to go with her brother. Not only to finally get some freedom and leave the village (for a little while) but also, she could finally bond with her brother again. She just felt distant from him ever since Dad left.

Katara followed her brother towards the boat and sat in the back part.

"You ready?" asked Sokka

"Of course I am" reapplied Katara.

Sokka then pushed the boat on the water and jumped in the front seat of the boat. He then grabbed the paddle and started heading outwards.

Katara just wanted to take everything in. She loved her village to death, but this was a much needed change of scenary for her. Although it just looked like a bunch of water and ice, it was more than that for her. This was a brand new world for her. Unseen territory. Finally seeing beyond her village gave her hope of one day being able to travel the world.

But as long as the Fire Nation are around, she wouldn't be able to fullfill that dream. Katara felt a bit depressed with those thoughts, but instantly pushed them to the back of her mind and once again, felt the joy she was feeling moments ago when she finally traveled beyond the village.

She was in such bliss that she almost forgot about her waterbending practice.

Almost

Born with a great ability, yet, no one but herself to learn how to properly use it.

Sokka spots a fish in the water, and his hunger starts too grow.

"It's not getting away from me this time." said Sokka grinning.

"Watch and learn, Katara. This is how you catch a fish." he added.

Katara rolled her eyes at her brothers claim and stared at the water. She then noticed a fish a knew that now was the opportunity to practice her waterbending. She glanced at Sokka too make sure he doesn't notice right now. She then takes off her left glove, takes a deep breath to concentrate, and starts moving her wrist. The fish gets encased in a water bubble, and Katara brings that bubble out of the water into the air.

"Sokka, look!" said Katara surprised.

"Sshh! Katara, you're going to scare it away." whispered Sokka.

Licking his lips, ad wiggling his fingers he gets ready to catch the fish with his bare hands.

"Mmmm ... I can already smell it cookin" said Sokka in deep concentration.

Katara was struggling to keep the bubble in the air, moving her left hand in order to keep it up.

"But, Sokka! I caught one!" yelled Katara, moving the fish towards the boat.

Sokka, too focused on his own fish to notice, raises his spear and pops the bubble splashing cold water all over him.

"Hey!" exclaimed Katara.

Sokka let out a gasp of discomfort as the fish tumbles through the air and Katara follows its arc with her eyes as it flies over her head and splashes back into the sea. Sokka rounds on his sister, placing his spear perpendicular to the rim of the boat as he yells irately.

"Why is it that every time you play with magic water, I get soaked?" asked a frustrated Sokka

Katara replied, "It's not "magic", it's waterbending! And it's …"

"Yeah, yeah, "an ancient art unique to our culture", blah, blah, blah.", Sokka cut her off.

"Look, I'm just saying that if I had weird powers, I'd keep my weirdness to myself." continued Sokka.

"You're calling me weird? I'm not the one who makes muscles at myself every time I see my reflection in the water!" responded Katara, producing a displeased face from Sokka.

Suddenly, the boat starts to shudder. Sokka and Katara manage to keep their balance but soon realize the boat is caught in a rapid current, which is pulling it swiftly toward a jumble of large icebergs which block the end of the narrow passage formed by the towering walls of ice. Sokka paddles the boat in an attempt to stay clear of any floating chunks of ice. He manages to gain just enough speed to keep the boat from being crushed by two icebergs which slam together behind the boat.

"Watch out! Go left! Go left!" commanded Katara.

The boat manages to stay clear of some of the icebergs, but it veers to the right with the current and becomes pinned by three large chunks of ice. As the canoe is completely crushed by the ice, Katara and Sokka throw themselves from the canoe and onto one of the floes; Katara nearly slides off the other side into the water, but comes to a halt at the floe's very edge. Katara raises her head and soon realizes that they are floating on one floe among dozens.

Katara, shuffling on her hands and knees, moves away from the rim toward the middle of the floe, sitting next to her brother. His spear is embedded point-first in the ice just behind him.

"You call that left?" asked Katara bitterly.

"You don't like my steering? Well, maybe you should've…waterbended us out of the ice." said Sokka waving his hands around mockingly.

"So it's my fault?!" said Katara indignantly.

"I knew I should've left you at home!" yelled Sokka frustrated.

"Even if it was your birthday, I should've just gotten dinner like I always have!" he continued.

"Leave it to a girl to screw things up!" he finished.

That was Katara's last straw. All her pent up rage, all of her bottled feelings, about to tip over the edge. She just didn't know how much power she had at her fingertips.

"You are the most sexist…immature…nut brained…" Katara started wailing her arms around in fury. As she was wailing them, she started to create giant waves behind her, but she was too angry too notice.

Sokka on the other hand, immediately noticed and got concerned.

'Was she always this powerful?' he thought to himself. If she was, he needed to calm her down before she sinks them. But he was too mesmerized of what was happening behind her to even say anything.

"...I'm embarrassed to even be related to you!"

Ouch! That one stung Sokka. Yet, he was used to arguing with his sister, so her comment didn't hurt him as much as it would have a few years ago. Yet she kept wailing her arms, and now started to crack a giant iceberg behind them.

"Ever since mom died…I've been doing all the work around camp while you've been off playing soldier!" she spat.

That one came really deep from her heart. Sokka had been more focused on becoming some village guardian, to impress their father, that he forgot how to be her sister. She hated that he made her feel like this on her birthday of all days. She started to hold back tears, and her angered only revealed itself more as she kept on wailing her hands more violently.

Now Sokka really started to get concerned. She deepened the crack in the iceberg and sooner or later, it will break apart and maybe cause a large explosion.

"Uhh…Katara" said Sokka bewildered.

"I even wash all the clothes! Have you ever smelled your dirty socks? Let me tell you, not pleasant!" she spat causing even more damage to the weakened iceberg behind them.

"Katara, calm down!" yelled Sokka full of fear.

"NO! THAT'S IT! I'm done helping you. From now on…you're ON YOUR OWN!"

As she said that last part, she wails both her arms towards the ground, causing a massive wave which causes impact to the iceberg, splitting it completely in half. Completely in shock, Sokka gasps for air, and only then Katara turns around an realizes what she had just done. She gasps and the two halves of the iceberg begin to fall away from each other and the siblings can be seen through the widening space between them. The two halves collapse into the water; a wave larger than any Katara cast at it radiates outward toward them and they are thrown to the ice as it pushes their floe backward. As the waves subside, Sokka, holds a protective arm over Katara, turns his head toward her.

"Okay, you've gone from "weird" to "freakish" Katara" said Sokka releasing her.

"You mean I did that?" she said astonished.

"Yep…congratulations." said Sokka sarcastically and nudging her elbow.

Then, glowing bubbles begin to appear. Then that glow begins to spread to an even larger radius. The siblings jump back in renowned terror, and what appread under the water begins to submerge itself.

A Giant Glowing Iceberg!

Large waves began to form due to it's revelation and large mass.

Mesmerized by the iceberg, Katara strays closer and stares at the iceberg; behind her, Sokka halfheartedly stretches out his hand, as if to hold her back. Katara focuses, and soon notices what seems to be the shape of a human, looks like a young boy, inside the iceberg. It seems, almost in a sitting position. She notices that the boy has glowing arrows on it's forehead, and hands, so she raises her eyebrows in confusion, only for the boy inside to suddenly open it's eyes, which are also glowing, eliciting shocked gasps from both siblings.

"He's alive! We have to help!" yelled Katara.

Before Sokka can grab it, Katara grabs Sokka's club out of its sheath on his back and pulls her hood over her head, heading in the direction of the strange boy sealed in the iceberg. Sokka again reaches out his hand in an attempt to hold Katara back, though she is already running across the ice.

"Katara, get back here! [He grabs his spear from the ice and runs after Katara, who is already at the ice's edge.] We don't know what that thing is!" he said trying to calm her down.

Katara hops across the short distance between her floe and the iceberg on five tiny chunks of ice; Sokka, close behind her, does the same. Reaching the iceberg first, Katara repeatedly strikes the iceberg with Sokka's club. On her fifth strike, the club breaks through the surface and a great gust of wind, which escapes from within the iceberg, throws her and her brother back from the side of the dome. Fissures quickly snake their way over the whole iceberg and, in a massive outward explosion, the entire orb of ice destroys itself. A beam of light bursts from the core of the iceberg and rockets into the sky.

Sokka had protectively clutched Katara, but he now releases her as he looks around. Light still encircles the remains of the former mountain of ice, now reduced to a hollowed-out crater. Sokka looks at his sister and they both get to their feet, Katara holding onto her brother. He points his spear at the crater, ready to defend them, though lowers it in shock as a figure emerges slowly from the depression in the iceberg.

"Stop!" he yells protectively, brandashing his spear in defence.

Now standing atop the crater, the figure slowly erects himself and looks down at them, and the two siblings stare back in wonder and circles of light finally dissipate as the boy stops glowing. The figure is revealed to be nothing more than a young boy, who gives a moan of exhaustion and suddenly faints.

Katara gasps and runs forward to catch him before he hits the ground.

Sokka follows behind and begins to poke at the boy's head with the blunt end of his spear.

"Stop it!" she said annoyed waving her brothers spear away.

Katara places the boy gently against the base of the crater. The boy slowly opens his gray eyes. He gasps in awe as he beholds the Southern Water Tribe girl, who stares at him, in wonder, with deep blue eyes.

"I need to ask you something…" said the boy weakly.

"What?" responded Katara

"Please ... come closer." he continued.

"What is it?" she asked moving her heads slowly towards him in curiosity.

The boy's entire demeanor and voice changed, and what came next out of his mouth was certainly not something Katara or Sokka were expecting.

"Will you go penguin sledding with me?"

Author's Notes:

Hi…welcome to my story. I'm gonna do my best to try to explain what I'm trying to write here, but to put it in basic terms, I'm writing an extended rewrite of Avatar the Last Airbender. I am in no way doing it because I thought the original story was bad. I believe it was a masterpiece, and whatever I write cannot come anywhere near. I am simply doing this for my own entertainment, and would like to share that with you guys. The story will basically have the same goals, mostly the same scenes as the original. Obviously, a bit changed, since I'll try to make it a bit more mature and there will also be added scenes, which would have taken place in between episodes. I also plan on continuing it after the main goal is complete. You will find out later on that there will also be an added power system. I obviously got inspiration from other series I watched, and once you see it, you guys will most likely recognize it. I hope you guys enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it. I'll try my best to continue updating this.

Goodbye :)
