Subaru had always believed that Rem's devotion to him was unwavering. After all, she had declared her love for him more than once. But when he saw her in deep conversation with Wilhelm, the elder knight, something in her eyes made his heart sink. She wasn't looking at Wilhelm as a mentor anymore—there was something more, something softer. Subaru's stomach churned as he realized Rem's feelings might be shifting toward someone more experienced, someone more reliable than him.
Convinced he was imagining things, Subaru decided to confront Rem later that day. But his attempts to bring up the topic only resulted in awkward pauses and evasive answers. The truth was, Rem had begun to admire Wilhelm's wisdom and strength, and while she didn't want to hurt Subaru, her feelings were indeed changing. Subaru, feeling rejected and utterly defeated, stormed out of the room, too humiliated to continue the conversation.
In his haste, he ran down the hallway, misjudging the distance between himself and a low-hanging chandelier. He slammed his head into the metal structure, knocking himself out instantly. As his vision faded, the image of Rem and Wilhelm chatting peacefully was the last thing his mind could conjure before everything went black.
