Subaru had always believed that Rem's affections were his alone, and after all they'd been through, he took her loyalty for granted. But one day, he overheard Rem talking to a maid in the mansion, whispering about a mysterious "someone" she
admired deeply. Subaru's heart dropped as he listened closer. Was she talking about him? The longer he eavesdropped, the more apparent it became that Rem wasn't referring to him at all.
Later, when he pressed her on the matter, Rem hesitated before shyly confessing that she had been admiring Wilhelm, the elderly swordmaster, for his wisdom and strength. Subaru was floored. Wilhelm? He couldn't believe it. His face flushed with humiliation as he realized that even Rem, who he thought loved him unconditionally, had her heart set elsewhere.
Trying to act unfazed, Subaru attempted to play it off, but in his rush to leave the room, he slipped on the freshly polished floor. He tumbled down the hallway, crashing into a suit of armor that promptly collapsed on top of him. Trapped beneath the heavy steel, Subaru couldn't move, his bruised ego only worsened by his pitiful situation.
