Chapter 9

Lex and Ron apparated to the end of the street that his and Hermione's house was on. Ron thought it was a better idea to apparated further away from the house in case they haven't followed. It would give them a second to handle any attack that may come. However, when they landed and lax realize where she was, she felt sick. This was the street she grew up on, the house she grew up in.

"It's the one up on the right here," Ron said, pointing to the house Lex immediately recognized.

Lex silently followed Ron, her breathing uneven as they got closer to the house. She was so overwhelmed. The last time she had been there was when the house had been burnt to ash and Ron, Ross, and Hugo had been killed. It felt like a sick dream to now be returning there with her father, and she had a constantly reminder herself that this house was one from the past, one she had probably never seen as she was certain her mother had had redecorated many times before she could remember the house.

As they reached the driveway they were met with four Aurors who had been posted there behind a defense shield that Ron had put up.

"Good evening, Mr. Weasley. No activity to report," the tallest Auror named Shawn said.

"Good. Did Hermione leave today?" Ron asked, knowing Hermione would probably be a little on edge if she had been stuck inside all day.

"No," Shawn shook his head.

"Brilliant," Ron mumbled under his breath and then turned to Lex as they walked up to the front door. "Hermione may be a little short if she's been here all day with no work to do."

Lex just nodded, hardly hearing her father as they approached the all too familiar door. She took a deep breath but said nothing. She couldn't believe she was about to see her mother, much younger and much more sane than the Hermione she had left a week ago.

"Don't be nervous...Hermione's not nearly as scary as everyone makes her sound," Ron smiled a little, misinterpreting Lex nerves as fear.

"Yeah, right..." Lex said as she slowly watched Ron open the front door. She was not sure how to feel about what was about to transpire. She had missed her mother maybe more than she even missed her father, maybe because Hermione is still someone she could see, but was no longer than mother she had grown up with in the future. She had to just keep reminding herself that's why she was there in the past, to help change things.

Hermione nervously busied herself around the kitchen. She had prepared one of Ron's favorite meals and made a small cake which was in the fridge that she had painstakingly wrote "you're a dad" on in frosting. Tonight as the night she was going to tell Ron she was pregnant. Her stomach felt twisted in knots and she couldn't tell if it was the morning sickness or just nerves. Being stuck at home all day with Aurors watching her every move if she had even stepped remotely near a window had only made her worse. She was ready for Ron to get home and offer the comfort of his presence.

The sound of the front door opening caused Hermione to jump a little and call out. "Ron?"

"Yeah, it's me," Ron's voice filled the kitchen before he did.

Hermione smiled at her broad-shouldered husband, nerves and excitement all boiling up at once. She moved to give him a kiss and hug but both were cut short as Hermione realized Ron was not alone.

Hermione let go of Ron as she took in the image of Lex. Her assistant was right, Ron's new partner was very pretty with beautiful olive skin and deep blue eyes, eyes that matched Ron's himself. "Oh, you brought someone."

Lex stood, her mouth slightly opened as she took in the younger image of her mother. Now she knew why everyone said she took after Hermione, it felt like looking in a mirror in some ways. Her mother was beautiful and her eyes were so full of life. Lex had forgotten what that had looked like on Hermione. It had been so long since she had seen her mother like that.

"Uh, yeah...this is my new partner, Lex," Ron pointed to Lex and then gave Hermione a half smile.

"Nice to meet you, Lex," Hermione said as she stuck her hand out to shake Lex's, after a long moment of silence when Lex didn't move or speak.

Hermione's movement seemed to snap Lex out her trance and she awkwardly cleared her own voice. "Uh, yes, hi."

"I invited Lex for dinner. We were working late...and I figured she had to eat...," Ron explained, realizing from Hermione's body language that he should've maybe asked before doing it now.

Hermione forced a smile, realizing that Ryan had only invited Lex because of the fight that she had with him the previous night so even though having the unexpected visitor had derailed Hermione's plans to tell Ron about her pregnancy she couldn't be upset with him, although she also couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy at the beautiful woman Ron would be spending long days with while she steadily grew, what she assumed would be less attractive throughout her pregnancy. "It's fine. Happy to have company."

Lex mirrored her mother's forced smile with an equal one knowing her mother was lying; she absolutely did not want Lex to be there.

Scorpius and Harry had been at it for hours, moving slowly through the massive shelves, and trying to figure out where all the prophecies belonged and which one was truly missing. Both of them were exhausted.

"This is impossible," Scorpius rubbed his bloodshot eyes.

"Not impossible, but improbable we will figure this out tonight," Harry said, also exhausted. He just wanted to get home to Ginny and his son. He knew between the Aurors watching Ginny's every move, how active James was, and Ginny's pregnancy his wife would need a break.

"Should we call it a night then? Try again tomorrow? I mean, we did go through at least a good quarter of the shelves already." Scorpius asked.

"I think we have to try and do a few more shelves. We are on a time crunch here," Harry said, and he meant it. He knew, whenever it came to Death Eaters, that time was of the essence.

Lex sat in awkward silence at Hermione and Ron's dinner table. Hermione had served a meal of beef and potatoes and Lex was trying her best to get it down. It had been years since Lex had eaten Hermione's cooking and although it had never been the best cooking, Lex realized her mother had approved vastly by the time she was born. Right now, Hermione's cooking was nothing to brag about.

"So...Lex...what's that short for?" Hermione broke the silence, trying to be polite but also wanting to know the woman Ron was spending so much time with.

"Alexis," Lex said flatly.

Hermione nodded, thinking that was a beautiful name. "Very pretty...and Ron said you are from America?"

"I live there now but I'm originally from London," Lex said.

"Oh, that makes sense...I didn't think that was a truly American accent," Hermione said.

Lex just shook her head, "Not fully."

Hermione nodded and went back to her own plate.

Ron glanced between the two women at his table, realizing dinner was a disaster. Lex seemed extremely quiet and Hermione, he could tell, was trying to be accommodating but not at all happy to have the extra guest.

"Lex has handled lots of death eaters...and I'd assume other criminals," Ron tried to bring it back to work, to assure Hermione he was safe with Lex.

"Uh...yeah...a lot of kills," Lex, shrugged off one sleeve to show the inside of her arm with the tally of death eaters she had taken out, careful to make sure her "mudblood" tattoo on her other arm was covered up.

"Bloody hell, what is that?" Ron was intrigued by the tattoo.

"It's a bewitched tattoo...adds a tally mark for every kill I've had...or execution after the capture," Lex explained.

"Thats's barbaric," Hermione said at the same time she heard Ron mumble the tattoo was wicked.

Lex frowned and put her jacket on. In the future, her mother had never seen her tattoo and she wondered now if the reaction would've been the same then as Hermione was having currently.

Ron and Hermione shared an uneasy book between the two Ron, obviously able to see that Hermione was not happy with the conversation at all. He ducked his head as he felt his ears go red and the room laps back into an uncomfortable silence.

The rest of the meal was eating quietly with only a few attempts from Ron to make light conversation. Finally, all of their places were clear, and Lex stood up.

"Thanks for dinner but I really think I should head out," Lex said.

"Well, hang on. If you need to go, why don't you take Scorpius back something to eat? I'm sure he's hungry as well." Ron said as he got up to move the refrigerator together some leftovers.

When Hermione realized Ron was moving to the refrigerator she panicked remembering that the special cake she had made to tell him she was pregnant was in there.

"Wait, Ron!" Hermione nearly fell out of her chair as she moved to stop him.

But Ron ignored her and open the fridge, immediately seeing the cake and smiling. He pulled it out, not really looking at it too closely. "Cake? Let's have dessert, shall we?"

Lex could see the distraught look on Hermione's face and although she didn't understand it, she could tell that Hermione did not want the cake to be pulled out.

"Ron, that's really not for us to share," Hermione said, her voice unsteady.

"Oh come on now, Hermione, that's being rude. It's just cake," Ron was surprised by his wife's behavior.

"Really, it's fine," Lex tried again.

"No, please have some dessert," Ron said, putting the cake down on the table and giving Hermione a slightly dirty look. She never was that rude to guests.

But the second that Ron put the cake on the table, Lex realized why her mother was trying to hide it. The words on top of the cake were clear as day to both women in the room and Hermione's face was white. Lex looked back-and-forth between her parents and realized her father had yet to read the top of the cake.

"Really, I'll head out," Lex said, more to her mother than father. She could tell her mom was almost on the verge of tears now.

"Well, take a piece with you then," Ron said, looking down at the cake for the first time.

And as Ron read the top of the cake, his face also went ghostly white. He slowly looked up at Hermione to see her watching him as she fought back tears. His eyes then drifted back to the cake, reading it again, completely dumbfounded.

Scorpius closed his eyes. He was absolutely exhausted and starting. He didn't think he could read through another shelf of prophecies and was about to tell Harry exactly that when suddenly Harry's voice filled the large room.

"I think I found something!" Harry shouted over the rows of shelves.

Scorpius quickly sprinted toward Harry's voice, finding the dark hard wizard staring up at a blank space on the shelf, most of the color looked like it had drained from Harry's face.

"What's wrong?" Scorpius approached Harry slowly.

Harry pointed to the spot on the shelf where there was clearly a missing prophecy. Under it, Scorpius saw the name attached to the prophecy, or at least part of it as the first half of the shelf had been destroyed by Death Eaters and the name plate was missing.

Scorpius read out loud what was left of the name and his voice trailed at the end "anger-Weasley..."

"Granger-Weasley," Harry said softly, easily filling in the missing letters as the impact of the words hit him. The missing prophecy was about Hermione. It had to be.

"So that's the one that was taken?" Scorpius knew he had to act half shocked. He knew they were looking for something related to Hermione or to Rose.

Harry nodded, looking a mixture of sad and concerned. After everything they had been through he had hoped Hermione and Ron would have peace like he was having with Ginny, but based on this that didn't seem to be the case.

"We should tell Kingsley," Scorpius said.

"And Ron and Hermione as soon as we can," Harry agreed, knowing time was of the essence if the missing prophecy really did have to do with Hermione.
