"You sure you don't need me to stay tonight?" Mom's voice projects through the speakers.
Masie and I are on the way home from the hospital after a short visit, and Bella made herself clear. She was surprised Jake was still lingering this morning, and she doesn't want a babysitter.
Especially a stranger.
That stung.
She isn't even sure about us.
"Nah," I say, sighing. "We need to be respectful. She doesn't remember us."
"I'm sorry, son."
"It sucks ass." I turn into our driveway. "But we have to abide by her wishes."
"Hopefully, she just needs time." Mom sniffles.
