Whew, so it turns out the two-week deadline was definitely a lie. I really do want to apologize and say thank you so much for the continued support. I can't believe how much this story has blown up and I am really excited to finally share this chapter with you all. Actually, I do have a confession. This chapter was mostly completed way back when the last chapter dropped. However, due to writers' block and a lot of sudden real-life work it just sort of fell apart. The majority of this chapter was written before most of the last chapter had been written. As a result, I tried to do touch-ups, but I am fairly certain you can see where old me wrote and current me added on. Also, this turned out way longer than I had thought it would and I really like where the ending went. Regardless I hope you enjoy it and thank you sincerely for taking the time to read this work it means the world. So, without further ado…please enjoy.
The Grimm Lands
Chapter 5
An Initiation to The Hunt
"Wait…can you repeat that sir?"
"You will be using your own landing strategy." Came the impassive response as the Headmaster took another sip from his mug.
"Right…so what exactly is that?" As Jaune raised his question another student was sent flying from the launch pad under their feet.
"It seems rather self-explanatory wouldn't you agree?" Another sip.
To his left, he noticed Yang had now been sent hurtling towards the forest. This left Just himself and Ruby. Though the younger girl seemed unworried about the present circumstances. She gave him a reassuring smile before she too was thrown out over the cliffside.
"I wouldn't have asked sir if-"
"Do try to not make a mess when you land mister Arc, it would be most inconvenient for clean up." Was that a joke?
Before he could retort Jaune felt himself suddenly flying through the air. The wind slammed into him as he ascended higher and higher.
The forest below looked so small from his point of view, in fact, it almost seemed peaceful. And now it looked like it was getting closer, and closer.
Free falling it turns out was worse for motion sickness than simply flying. Jaune could feel his stomach rolling in circles as he ungraciously plummeted towards the ground. Panic superseded almost every other aspect of his survival instincts. He floundered for a few agonizing moments before finally taking a breath and relaxing.
Though he had never been airdropped before, nor would he ever want to again, he had to figure something out or he could very well die. He wasn't confident that his aura could handle an impact quite this large.
He scanned the sky around him. Maybe he could piggyback off of someone else's strategy. The ground was steadily approaching, and he had very few options with a simple sword and shield.
At that moment, a volley of gunfire rang out to his left. Twisting his body slightly he caught a glimpse of a red-figure firing off several rounds in succession in front of herself to slow her descent. At the same time, a yellow streak zoomed ahead of him using a barrage of shots to not only accelerate but also correct her flight path.
Grasping the basic idea, he hatched a slapdash plan as the tree line grew closer. He unslung his weapon from behind his back, and smoothly grabbing a high explosive magazine from his belt with a practiced assuredness. Slapping the magazine into the shotgun he pumped the action and loaded the round. Shouldering the buttstock, he aimed in front of himself as the wind forced him to squint his eyes. With a steady breath, he channeled the familiar warmth of his aura.
Feeling it spread throughout his body he directed the flow towards the gun in his hands. Seeping into the metal it pulsed and wrapped the battered shotgun in a faint white glow. Mixing into the specially made dust rounds inside the magazine Jaune concentrated. Fingering the trigger, he spilled out a thin stream of aura into the chambered round. Pulling the trigger, he was violently blasted backward.
'Shit! Too much!' He scolded himself. Righting his position, he lowered the aura he mixed into the next round. Firing again he was shot a few feet back into the air. Lamenting at the waste of bullets he fired off several more shots in timed bursts.
Having slowed down considerably he re-slung his weapon before pulling the sheath onto his forearm. Expanding the shield as the tops of the trees grazed past him, he refocused his aura into his legs. Pushing off a passing branch he made his way towards the ground. Raising his shield up he tucked his legs and rolled into the impact. Not nearly as elegant as he thought it would be, he found the shield catching onto the dirt as he made contact. Tumbling away he rolled several feet in an unceremonious heap. Finally stopping as he laid sprawled out on the ground.
'Note to self, work on a landing strategy' He bemoaned. Rising to his feet he dusted himself off and checked to make sure his equipment was still intact. A quick once over revealed only minor aches were the worst of his worries. Knowing his aura reserves would heal him soon enough he took a cautious look around. Unsure of just how far he had landed in the forest he figured the best course of action would be to make his way North. That was where the relics were supposed to be. Hopefully whoever he found along the way would be someone he could rely on.
Starting his trek north he collapsed the shield and placed it back onto his waist. It was hard to tell how full the forest was of Grimm; he would have to be on alert.
Several minutes trudged by as Jaune made his way through the thick foliage. He had heard gunfire somewhere off to his right, though curious he was sure whoever was fighting could handle themselves.
As he happened upon a clearing his instincts screamed out. Drawing Crocea Mors in a single swift movement he flung the blade in the direction of several bushes in front of him. The sound of metal tearing through flesh confirmed his intuition. A loud whimper filled the empty air as the creature in hiding fell lifelessly to the ground.
'Beowolves,' Jaune confirmed unhooking his shield and sliding it onto his arm. Expanding to its full size he lowered his stance. 'If there's one then that means...'
Shifting his feet, he spun in a half-circle, swinging the shield he met contact with the head of another one. Bashing against the Grimm he sent it skidding back. The creature stumbled and shook its head. Dizzy it looked back at the human who struck it only to be met with the edge of the shield crushing into its eyes. Tearing into its lightly armored head Jaune slid the smooth edge of the shield across its eyes. Blinding the creature, it stumbled back howling in agony.
Raising the heater shield high above his head Jaune struck downward with its sloped point. Cracking open the top of its skull the creature fell, disappearing into a cloud of dust before it hit the ground.
Without missing a beat Jaune swung his shield like a fist, hammering the top edge into another Grimm who attempted to surprise him from behind. The beast flew back, barely landing on its paws as it howled. A chorus echoed the wail as the pack slowly stalked forward into the clearing.
"So, there were more, thought so" Grinning to himself he returned to his starting stance, waiting for their next move. Beowolves weren't all that impressive alone but they hunted in large packs. They swarmed their enemies and tore them apart. Often led by a singular alpha it was advisable not to take them on alone. However, the ones he was currently facing were young. They had little to no skull-like armor. That meant they were inexperienced, they were careless, and Jaune would exploit that carelessness.
The Grimm closest to him snarled and lunged, its powerful hind legs tearing apart the ground beneath itself as it leaped. Opening its jaw wide it was met with a powerful throw of Jaunes shield. Thrown like a discus the polished metal tore apart the Grimm from the lower jaw up. Cutting through its flesh it embedded itself into a tree several feet away. The mangled body of the Beowolf collapsed, fading into nothing. The others hesitantly stepped back at the sudden display of carnage.
Wasting no time Jaune drew the small dagger from his belt. Holding it with a reverse grip in his right hand he waited patiently for the next attack. Finally allowing his emotions to surface he felt the bitter feelings of rage he had been forced to push down since he got to the school bubble to the surface.
It created a sweet scent for the Grimm, one he knew they couldn't resist. The hungry creatures charged him at once. As the first one attempted to bite down on him he raised his left arm to block the attack. Channeling his aura into his forearm the monster was met with resistance as it bit down on the limb. Struggling to tear through the forcefield, Jaune held the creature in place.
Raising his right arm high with the dagger he plunged it straight into the monsters' eye. Twisting it he pulled it out as the Grimm went slack. Pivoting he switched his grip and using both arms plunged it into the throat of a Beowulf charging from behind him. Letting go of the handle he kicked the dying monster into two more approaching.
Taking off into a dead sprint towards his shield he slid under the powerful swings of another Grimm that tried to intercept his path. Twisting his body, he rolled away from the beast as it smashed its massive paws downwards. Spinning into a kneeling position he unhooked his firearm, dropping the high explosive magazine in one motion he replaced it with a fire dust magazine. Chambering the first round he took aim and fired.
The powerful spread mixed with aura caught the beast and two other advancing Grimm in its path. The dust pellets embedded themselves into the Grimm igniting with the aura infused into them, setting the monsters ablaze. Howling in pain and confusion the monsters wailed and whimpered as they tried to put out the flames.
The remaining four stalked in place. Eyeing the boy, they hesitantly communicated amongst themselves almost like they were afraid to advance. Taking the momentary rest Jaune inched his way towards the tree his shield was currently stuck in. One of the Grimm seeing this grew impatient and pounced, clearing the distance between them in a single bound.
Ducking under its powerful swing as it landed Jaune kicked out at his hind leg. His aura added to the power behind the kick causing the monster to stumble. Straightening himself Jaune grabbed onto the creatures' massive head and used his body to slam it into the protruding edge of the shield. Ramming it into the polished metal, a wet sickening crunch signaled the creature was dead.
As it faded, Jaune gripped the shield and pulled it from its wedged position. Sliding it back onto his arm he eyed the remaining Grimm.
Casting a glance back towards the burning corpses of the three from earlier he noted with smug satisfaction that they were dispersing into ashes. "Looks like it's just us now. Where's your boss? Don't tell me he's scared." He openly mocked, the anger emanating off him in waves.
Pushing forward he charged them raising his left arm back he threw the shield once more. This time it embedded itself into the chest of the middle Grimm. Dashing forward as it stumbled, he jumped towards it. Kicking out his right leg he surged his aura through his body, contacting the metal shield the armament tore the rest of the way through the beast clattering to the ground as it faded. Landing in a crouch he turned his attention to the Grimm to his right. Sensing the hostility, it tried to reach out and swipe at the teen. Rolling, he unhooked his weapon and fired off another shot. As the Grimm caught fire, he was caught off guard as the third Beowolf attacked.
Leaping onto his back he was forced to the ground. Managing to turn onto this back he barely had time to raise the shotgun in defense as the monster snapped down at him. Bracing the raised weapon above his face the Grimm bit down into it. Struggling to force the creature off Jaune was pinned down. The scent of blood wafted off the creature creating a pungent odor. The scent was familiar and as Jaune pushed back against the creature of darkness his vision went red.
"Just how many people have you killed?!" He screamed out letting go of the shotgun with one arm he swung his fist up at the beast. Hitting its snout, he attacked again and gain. Channeling his aura, he swung and swung. Hitting its large maw, he felt the creature pull back. Taking advantage, he pushed back with the shotgun. Twisting the weapon in its mouth he forced its head away.
As he sat up the creature snapped back at him. With a loud cry, Jaune swung his fist again, surging it with his aura. Aiming for its eye his fist tore into the Grimm's skull. It shuddered and collapsed onto him. The weight pushed him back down and felt like it was crushing him.
Thankfully, it faded into dust soon after. Taking a moment Jaune let out a large breath. Sitting back up he surveyed the area to ensure it was secure. Rising back onto his feet he made his way over to his shield. Picking it up he collapsed it back into its sheathed form sliding it back onto his waist. Doing the same for his discarded dagger, he slung his shotgun back into place. Searching for his blade he stumbled through the shrubbery. As he parted the bushes, he came upon a sight that he couldn't help but offer a light chuckle.
"Well, I guess that answers where the Alpha ran off to." He snickered dryly as he cast a glance down at the once-proud beast.
When he had initially thrown his blade at the first Grimm the sword cut into the skull of the alpha. Slumping down and unable to move it had laid in this exact spot for the entirety of the fight slowly dying. The Grimm let out faint weak whimpers of pain as it simply laid down. Crocea Mors stuck out of the left side of its armored skull. "I wouldn't mind waiting for you to die but I'm stretched for time."
With a final farewell Jaune gripped the handle of his sword and pushed forward like a lever, the Grimms skull cracked open. Finally finished he sheathed the blade and continued onward.
"It would seem almost all the teams have been assigned," Glynda commented plainly as she watched the live feed of several students from her scroll. She was met with a disinterested grunt from her colleague. Unperturbed she continued, "By process of elimination it seems our final partners will be Miss Nikos and Mr. Arc. Though whether they find each other is a separate issue."
Being answered by silence she turned towards the stoic man to her side. The ever-enigmatic headmaster of Beacon was solely focused on his own scroll. Casting a glance towards his live feed she noticed he was observing the young silvered-eyed girl as she quarreled with her new partner. "I see Miss Rose has found Miss Schnee. Quite a problematic match."
"I find these sorts of pairings tend to create the greatest results," Ozpin remarked, finally turning his attention to his associate. "Though how long it will take for those results to show may prove troublesome."
"Speaking of troublesome are you certain about allowing Jaune Arc to enroll?" Glynda asked skeptically. Turning her scroll to face Ozpin she replayed the footage of the boy brutally attacking the Grimm. "He fights with such a brutish forwardness. He almost looks like he's enjoying himself."
"I can see your concern; I was quite surprised myself when I received his recommendation," Ozpin answered with a perplexed expression. "It came as a great shock to hear our old friend Jack was still alive, much less training a new protegee."
"I thought he was killed in that massacre in Vacuo years ago. If he survived then maybe there were others." Glynda hoped optimistically.
"I wouldn't be too sure, after all, false hope will only bring us greater heartache in the long run," Ozpin responded sardonically, his eyes taking on a faraway look. "Regardless I don't think he escaped unharmed. It seems he's been hiding out near the Grimm territories. Arming and training small group militias near the borders."
"Honestly, I don't think I'll ever understand why you and the council don't eliminate those groups. They aren't huntsmen and all they do is get in the way or turn to banditry." Huffing she folded her arms.
"They may not be trained but they are people who have lost everything to the Grimm. A small band of heroes who want so desperately to help fight back. Besides, they can act in ways that most Huntsman cannot."
"You mean to act in illegal ways" Glynda countered pointedly.
"Hmph, the law has no meaning out in the Grimm Lands Glynda. It's survival pure and simple. Mr. Arc is living proof of what it's like to survive on the cusp of life and death. I'm eager to see how far he'll go." Ozpin turned his focus back to his scroll, switching between the feeds he monitored any changes in the applicants.
"He's a liability. He prioritizes killing Grimm over everything else. In that letter Jack even stated the boy was a danger to himself if left to his own devices did he not?" Glynda could feel her patience fading quickly.
This whole situation was absurd. If Jaune's arc was connected to the small arms militias around the borders of the major cities, then he was nothing more than a criminal. Much less if he was to be trained as a huntsman than he had to set his priorities.
The militias themselves were formed as a sort of coalition of people who had been the victims of Grimm attacks on the outer settlements. Often, Farmers and destitute survivors banded together as a cheaper alternative to Huntsman. With no training and smuggled arms acquired through various underground means, they toted themselves a resistance.
Most were wiped out over time but some stuck around and offered cheaper services for potential settlements that didn't have the ability to fund experienced huntsmen. A noble enough idea, however, many militias turned into bandit groups or small-time gangs when rates were low. Strong arming businesses and traders along the roads used force to intimidate and bully. Eventually, the towns would either hit an economic instability or become so immersed in negative emotion that the Grimm would come pouring in.
"I understand your concern, however, I feel that Mr. Arc is in desperate need of direction. I fear if left alone he would self-destruct. So, I believe allowing him to enter Beacon may prove beneficial to not only himself but to his teammates." Ozpin explained, taking a sip of his coffee he watched as the man in question stray off the path. Detouring away from the location of the relics he seemed to be in search of something.
"He has the makings of a fine huntsman and it's hard to find those with such experience at his age. For now, let us simply observe."
With a long sigh, Glynda finally conceded. "Fine, but I hope you know what you're doing."
Reaching what appeared to be a solitary cave along a steep cliffside Jaune paused. Nearing the entrance, he noticed what appeared to be markings of some kind. Running his hand over the smooth carvings he tried to piece together the meaning behind them. It depicted several humans fighting off what appeared to be a large scorpion with thin spears and arrows.
"Deathstalker," Jaune mumbled to himself. Eyeing the small opening of the cave he cautiously made his way over. "If there are carvings warning of it then that means it must be quite old. I wonder if I should lure it out or maybe try to crush it inside..." Thinking out loud he nearly missed the sound of a branch snapping behind him. Reacting quickly, he spun on his heel and drew his weapon in an instant, finger on the trigger ready to shoot at a moment's notice.
"Oh sorry, I didn't mean to sneak up on you like that." Relaxing almost immediately he offered a friendly smile at the familiar face.
"Pyrrha, funny meeting you in a place like this,"
"Oh well, you know just happened to be around the area," Giving Jaune a timid smile she continued. "I was heading North and happened to see you in passing, I was curious when I saw you had taken off in the opposite direction."
"Oh, yeah I kinda picked up the trail of a Grimm and followed it back here," Jaune explained.
"You mean there's a Grimm inside that cave right now?"
"I'm pretty sure, if I'm right then it's an older Deathstalker. If we kill it while it's unaware then it shouldn't be too hard."
"Or we could head back the way we came. Our objective is to find the relics. We don' have to pick a fight with every Grimm." Pyrrha reasoned.
"That's not an option. If we leave it will only get stronger and potentially hurt more people. Isn't the job of a huntsman to kill Grimm?"
"Actually, I believe the role of all huntsmen is to protect the people. Sure, killing Grimm is a part of it but clearing the mission objective is always top priority," Pyrrha explained, stepping forward she rested a tentative hand on Jaunes shoulder. Casting her a weary look he weakly shook her handoff.
"Look, this is something I have to do. I'll finish this and head towards the objective after ok?" Hardening his gaze, he focused back on the cave's entrance. Deciding explosives would be too reckless in case of a landslide he decided heading in was his best option.
"You can't really be thinking of doing this alone Jaune. I mean if you are right then this is a very dangerous Grimm. I'm sorry if this sounds out of place but I don't think you could take something like this on alone," The worry was evident in her voice. Gripping his shoulder again she forced him to face her.
"I'll be fine," He responded flatly but something in his eyes changed. Gone were the bright kind cobalt blue she saw yesterday. Instead, they were darker, cloudy, filled with something far angrier and far more primal. "I always am," He spat out bitterly.
"Well if your set on this then I guess I'm in too," Pyrrha stated confidently. Reaching behind herself she drew her weapons. With a cheerful smile, she ushered for Jaune to lead the way. "I mean we're partners after all right?"
The disbelief on Jaunes face was evident, the dark gleam in his eyes was replaced by sheer shock. How long had it been since someone had said that to him? He honestly couldn't remember. A warm feeling arose in his chest, spreading to the rest of him. A grin spread across his lips as he looked back at the future huntress in front of him.
"If you really don't mind that it's me." Turning around he dropped to a knee. Pulling his bag off his back he rummaged around inside of it for a few moments. Pulling out a flashlight and flint and steel he turned his head to address his new comrade. "Can you find me a thick stick? I'd like to make a torch."
"Sure thing, be back in a few," With that Pyrrha turned around and headed back into the thick foliage of the forest disappearing after a few feet into the shadows of the trees.
Sighing to him Jaune closed his bag and standing up he slung it over his back. Checking the flashlight, he went over his equipment once more, though his thoughts drifted elsewhere. 'Partners' huh? I mean I knew it would happen, but it feels so strange hearing it. Ever since August I haven't really had one, have I?' Shaking his head, he eyed the cave once more. He focused himself. He knew what he had to do, and he knew how he was going to do it. His bitter feelings could wait until after the Grimm was dead.
Pyrrha returned soon after with a stick, working quickly Jaune gave her the light and set to make the torch. With all his preparations ready he turned to his new partner running over his plan he caught her up to speed. They would lure the Grimm out from its inner cave and once they had it in the open Pyrrha would distract it while Jaune took it out from underneath. He explained that the weakest part of a Deathstalker was its underside. Being so close to the ground they had little to fear in terms of potential attacks. One good shot would be more than enough for him to kill it.
"Ready to go?"
"Always"
The cave was far longer than either one had anticipated. It had only been a few minutes since they'd entered but it felt so much longer. Pyrrha eyed the back of the boy in front of her, curiosity ebbing away at her patience. Finally, she spoke up. "Hey, Jaune?"
"Yeah, what's up?" He responded. His voice was disinterested as he solely focused on looking for potential threats.
Playing with the flashlight in her hand she continued. "Why exactly make a torch? Wouldn't the flashlight be enough?"
"Weirdly enough fire is an effective deterrent for Grimm. Most species have some type of fur that can catch on fire," He explained. Raising the torch around the cave walls he eyed for potentially smaller Grimm.
"So, you want to set the Deathstalker on fire?" She asked in clear disbelief.
Stifling a laugh, he responded in a straightforward tone. "No of course not. The torch is to deter Ravagers from swarming us. They can't see well so the darkness of caves is where they tend to nest. They're like bats but have a bad habit of staying away from the sun. Torches help keep them at bay. If you can see them and avoid their pack mentality you can kill them easily." With an experienced edge in his voice, he continued. "It's also great for pissing off heavily armored Grimm."
"How so-,"
"Quiet, we're here," Cutting off Pyrrha Jaune stopped dead in his tracks. Looking forward he caught a glimpse of the giant beast. The pale light of the torch bounced faintly off of its rugged bone-like armor. Its side was to them so Jaune was certain it hadn't picked up they were there. Deathstalkers operated in darker environments but lacked proper peripheral vision. Head on it was a nightmare but from the side it was manageable.
"Pyrrha listen. I'm going to piss it off royally. When I do turn the flashlight on and run out of here. Just keep going until you make it out," Glancing over at her he managed to see the outline of her head give a nod of understanding.
"Good, then let's kill it." Drawing Crocea Mors Jaune stepped forward. The cave had expanded into a room large enough to comfortably fit the Deathstalker inside. Jaune theorized that the cave may have once belonged to either Ursa or Beowolves but had been taken over by the Grimm before him. Though Grimm only hunted humans and occasionally wildlife they didn't fight amongst each other except for territory rights and hunting grounds.
Slowly stepping his way towards the creature Jaune channeled the same blistering rage from his previous encounter. Creating an irresistible scent of negative emotions. The Creature picked up on it almost immediately in a flash of scurrying appendages it had turned its entire body to face its new meal. Its large menacing pincers snapped open and closed rapidly in excitement. Its chelicerae vibrated eagerly.
Its bright glowing red markings and soulless eyes shone ominously as it took in its prey. It scurried and clicked like an insect and even through his growing hatred Jaune couldn't help but shudder. He hated bugs and this was nothing less than an overgrown scorpion. Its stinger glowed bright yellow and swayed slightly, readying itself for the kill. It was a trait unique to the Deathstalker. It acted as a lure for wildlife and unaware humans. Catching their eye, it enticed them in with its bright appendage before capturing and tearing them apart.
Without warning, Jaune channeled his aura through his feet. Bounding forward he thrust the torch straight into one of the Deathstalkers eyes. Plunging it deep he smelled burning flesh and grinned. The flames licked around the ends of the torch and burned into the Deathstalker causing it to shriek in agony.
Using his aura once more Jaune jumped onto one of the monster's pincers as its stinger plunged cratering the earth in its aftermath. Jumping up again he slid onto the rugged skull armor on top of its body. Raising Crocea Mors high he plunged it into one of the gaps in its defenses on its abdomen. The creature cried out again and lashed out wildly. Swiping and tearing apart the cave the creature was confused and in pain.
"Now Pyrrha! Run!" Jaune yelled barely managing to hold onto the hilt of his sword as the Grimm tried desperately to shake him off. Ramming itself into the cave walls the entire room shook, rocks began to crumble from the ceiling and fall to the ground. "Flash it in the eye! Try to force it out of here!"
Jaune managed to drag himself into a kneeling position as the Grimm flailed about. Gripping the sword hilt, he pulled it out of the creature only to plunge it back in deeper. Crying out the creature's movements became more erratic.
Pyrrha did as she was told and flashed the light, somehow managing to gain the attention of the creature. Finally seeing a target, it could reach it charged forward with reckless abandon. Having accomplished her objective Pyrrha turned tail and bolted down the path they originally came from. The creature pushed forward, charging into the small opening of the pathway it decimated the path before itself. Pushing and breaking apart the stones and boulders in its way it chased after its target.
Jaune barely managed to hold on as the creature gave chase after his partner. Tucking down he simply gripped his sword and channeled his aura to aid in deflecting and brushing off any large rocks that came pelting into him. Thanking whatever entity above for his large aura reserves he grit his teeth and managed to twist the blade. Digging into the Grimm it let out another screech. Looking up Jaune managed to see the light marking the entrance of the cave.
Pyrrha leaped out of the opening of the cave, the creature exploding out behind her. Rolling forward she made the distance between herself and the Grimm, twisting around she raised her javelin form of Milo. Shifting the weapon into its rifle form she took a clear shot at one of the weak points in the cracks of the Grimms frontal armor.
The Grimm squirmed and screeched. Charging forward it attempted to barrel into her. Seeing this Pyrrha managed to roll to the side before taking another shot at one of the beasts' legs. Not even faltering the creature continued its charge forward. Tearing into the tree lines it simply pushed forward.
"Jaune!" Pyrrha called out as the boy simply hung on for dear life. The monster seemed more interested in creating distance than engaging head-on. Jaune wasn't surprised, Grimm were more like animals than people realized. Attacked in its own nest and forced to chase after capable prey it made sense for it to try and create distance and recover before making another attack. Though he wished he hadn't underestimated the Grimm survival instincts because now he was stuck as it ran through the forest. The wind rushed past him as the Grimm scurried.
He had to get it to stop somehow so he could kill it. Twisting the blade again he tried to force it to acknowledge him. The Grimm cried out once more as it burst into an open plane. Extending its stinger, it scooped at Jaune and managed to force him to jump from its back.
Taking Crocea Mors with him he landed into a roll. Coming to a kneeling position he was taken by surprise as the Deathstalker turned in a semi-circle and swept its long tail at him. Catching him in the stomach the force sent him skidding backward. Sliding across the open plain he tumbled and rolled until he finally came to a stop, his back hitting something hard.
He groggily made his way onto his feet.
'So not my best plan, but at least now I have it in the open,' His aura reserves took a bit of a blow but otherwise, he would be fine. All that was left was to charge it again and get under it. From there he would tear into the Grimm and finally end it. He just had to-
"Are you alright? That was quite a hit," A softly spoken voice broke his train of thought.
Glancing over he took notice of his surroundings. The girl in black from his first day was standing a few feet away. Though it wasn't concerned in her eyes it seemed like genuine empathy. Next to her stood Yang with a surprised look on her face, it was strange not seeing her usual shit-eating grin. On Yangs another side was Ruby and Weiss, Ren and Nora stood off behind the others. All eyes were on him. "Yeah, I'll be fine. More importantly that Grimm has to be dealt with,"
"Um about that Jaune, we have one other to take care of," Ruby commented with a nervous chuckle.
A loud screech caused Jaunes head to jerk upwards, his eyes narrowing at the giant Grimm circling above them. Turning back to the Deathstalker still hovering near the tree lines he couldn't help the excited grin forming on his lips.
"So, we have a Nevermore to deal with as well huh? This just got a bit more interesting," Gripping his sword in his right hand he unslung his weapon from behind his back.
However, as he prepared to take a step forward Pyrrha bolted from the tree line. As she sprinted forward, she narrowly dodged the Deathstalkers giant pincer swiping at her. Tucking into a roll she expertly raised her shield at an angle to deflect the other appendage from crushing her. She cast a glance in the direction of the group before spinning her javelin to parry another strike. She was sticking to the plan they had made earlier. She was waiting for him.
"We should grab her and head back, the objective is the relics, not the Grimm. We've secured the relics so I guess that means missions over." The raven-haired girl spoke up.
It made sense to any rational person. Fighting the Grimm here wouldn't impact their scores and accomplishing the mission objective was always top priority. If Jaune was anyone else, he would agree that running was the best bet. But he wasn't and not only did he have a partner waiting for him, but he also had two Grimm to kill.
"I believe that may be the wisest choice," Ren agreed sagely. "We've already accomplished our goal now is not the time to waste on pointless battles." Everyone else seemed to agree and Jaune couldn't blame them. The Grimm was more of an obstacle for initiation. Something to confirm everyone's ability. Yet he couldn't stop the trembling in his fists, the lump in his throat, the bitterness in his soul.
"Pointless?" Jaune managed to ground out the barely controlled rage catching the others by surprise. "We should be trying to fight it. Running away will only give it more time to learn and potentially hurt other people," The words started to flow, and he honestly couldn't stop them, or maybe he just didn't want to.
"Jaune?" Ruby croaked out in concern, but she was overshadowed by the explosiveness of her older sister.
"And just what exactly do you propose we do? Just because you have a hard-on to fight every Grimm doesn't mean the rest of us have to be dragged into it!" Yang countered stepping forward to face Jaune.
"Coward."
She grabbed the collar of his jacket just above the chest plate, her eyes a deep crimson. "I dare you to say that again!" She spat out.
Slinging his weapon back Jaune gripped her wrist with surprising strength. "I said, coward. There's a Grimm right in front of you and you decide prioritizing a few stupid relics is a better option?! Who knows what else that thing might do if we don't stop it?! All Grimm are the enemy. Just because it may inconvenience you doesn't mean you can just walk away like it's not your problem!" The rage bubbled a surface taking over him almost entirely. Wrenching Yangs hand away he turned back to the Deathstalker. If it had been anyone but Pyrrha he was sure they would have been overwhelmed and or ignored. He honestly couldn't have asked for a better partner. "I'm going to support my partner."
"I think he's right," Jaune was taken aback, some of the anger faded as he turned to face the red scythe wielder. "We're Huntsman and Huntresses in training, we're supposed to stop the bad guys and beat the Grimm," Turning to face him Ruby offered an understanding smile. "I hope you have a plan Jaune,"
"Now wait Just a minute!" Weiss cried out indignantly. "Just who do you two think you are?! There's no point in facing them we should head back while we can. We have the relics and the longer we take the worse we'll be graded. Don't either of you cares about passing?"
Jaune stepped forward about to lose his temper again before Ruby stepped in front of him. "Of course, we do, but it kinda seems like not fighting them is the least Huntsman-like thing to do. So, I say we show those Grimm what we can do!" Ruby declared cheerfully.
Weiss looked at her with clear disbelief before uttering out a defeated sigh. "I swear you're going to get us all killed," Ruby could only chuckle in response.
"If Ruby's onboard then I guess so am I," Yang stated. "But don't think you're off the hook for that comment." She warned casting a glare that threatened to burn through Jaune.
"Guess there's not much choice." Blake resigned herself.
"Ooh! Renny! Does this mean I get to smash the big one? Can I? Can I?" Nora eagerly pleaded the exasperated boy.
"Yes, Nora you may. So, what is the plan then?" Ren asked, clearly stuck with Nora's wishes. He looked to Jaune for the next step.
Looking at the group Jaune couldn't help but be surprised. They may be looking to him for a plan, but it was Ruby who had convinced them to follow. He really would have to thank her later. With a lopsided grin, Jaune laid out his next idea.
"Ren, Nora I need you to distract the Deathstalker," Receiving confirmation, he took note as the Nevermore circled back around from above. "Ruby, can you and the others handle the Nevermore?"
"You betcha!" With a salute, she took off for the tree lines the others following closely behind. Wasting no more time Jaune took off running towards the scorpion Grimm. From above him a few pink smoke trails lobbed towards the Grimm. Exploding on contact they only seemed to piss off the creature more than hurt it. It managed to allow a brief window for Pyrrha to disengage. Pulling back, she looked rather well considering how long she had been facing the monster alone. Switching back her Javelin to rifle she fired off several shots. Coming up behind Jaune, Ren unloaded dozens of rounds from his own pair of weapons.
The creature managed to shrug off most of the bullets though it clearly became more agitated. Jaune pressed forward.
"Pyrrha cover my flank!" He called out as he charged. Responding she readied her shield and charged as well. Nearing the Grimms massive frame Jaune managed to duck under one of its pincers, as it swiped above his head it raised its other appendage and tried another swipe.
Appearing in the nick of time Pyrrha angled her shield and deflected the blow. Taking the opportunity Jaune slid under the creature. Raising Crocea Mors as he slid, he dug the blade into the underside of the Grimm. Cutting vertically down the Grimm he had limited room to work. Gripping the length of the sword in his left hand he cut in short swings and dug into the Grimms underbelly. Black smoke oozed off the Grimm as it wailed. Attempting to scuttle away it was met by several concussive blows of Noras' grenade launcher from its right.
Digging the blade out of the Grimm Jaune swiped out towards the limbs on its left side. Managing to cut one and nick a second the Grimm stumbled and nearly fell. Eyeing an opportunity Pyrrha charged forward, rolling under a pincer strike from her right spun into a strike, and managed to cut off another limb from the Grimms left side. The creature collapsed onto the left side of its body unable to support its massive body any longer.
With a graceful backflip, she dodged the Grimms stinger. As it raised its tail back up for another strike Pyrrha threw her shield with incredible accuracy at the scorpions' stinger. Hitting the point where it connected with the rest of its tail, she knocked it loose. Wobbling uncertainly the Grimm was taken aback as it tried to retreat. Slashed from behind it screeched.
Ren fired off several more rounds as he took aim at its tail. Nora continued to pester it with mild explosions before switching to a more direct approach. Changing from her grenade launcher to a war hammer she leaped at the Grimm. With another round firing off she came down with an incredible force behind her broad swing. Nailing the Grimm on the top of its head the skull Armor seemed to crack under the force. As the creature tried once more to lash out with its tail it suddenly shuddered and stilled.
Moments later the tip of a blade came bursting from one of the openings around its eyes. The Grimm shuddered then slumped on its lopsided and damaged left side before fading into nothingness.
As the creature disappeared Jaune rose to his feet, swinging his blade casually downwards he tried to remove the black ooze coating the length of the blade.
"That went surprisingly well," Ren noted dryly as the four regrouped.
"Yeah, no kidding. It was tougher to take out than I thought it would be. I'm honestly amazed you kept it occupied for so long alone," Jaune praised his partner. It was true though even after running after the Grimm and holding it at bay while the others bickered Pyrrha had barely even broken a sweat.
His awe was short-lived as a thunderous crash erupted over the massive ravine near the temple that housed the 'relics'. Casting his gaze he caught sight of Ruby and the others fired off one of the most overwhelmingly dangerous attacks he had ever seen.
"Never thought to try and behead a giant bird…"
As the others regrouped and collected their relics they broke into light chatter before deciding to finally make their way back towards the cliff. It seemed they would all pass initiation after all. Spirits were high, and an air of hopefulness swept amongst the group.
At that moment bloodcurdling screech rang out through the forest accompanied by a thundering tremor that shook the ground.
"What was that?" Weiss asked unsurely.
"Whatever it is was we should probably go before it arrives." Blake proposed, receiving nods of agreement from most everyone else.
Jaune himself agreed but found his feet unwilling to budge. A part of him refused to grant the idea of retreating any more than a passing thought. He was surprised when he felt a tender hand rest on his shoulder.
"I understand how you may feel," Came Pyrrha's soft-spoken voice, barely more than a whisper as to avoid bringing notice from the others. "but now may be the best time to consider completing the mission."
"But the Grimm-"Jaune began but was stopped from a firm shake of Pyrrha's head.
"There are others besides you here Jaune. Think about how they may feel and what is best for them." Though soft-spoken her words held a firmness that caused any further protest to die on his lips.
She was right. The others had already decided to leave was a better option, he could see them breaking for the relics. With a sigh, he relented and turned to face his new partner. Offering a small smile, he gave a sly smile.
"You're right. But next time- "Once again she managed to cut him off.
"I'll stand with you." She matched his grin with her own.
A silent air of mutual understanding settled between them. Both nodded towards each other before making haste to catch up with the group.
It was quiet for most of the trip back to Beacon. Small talk erupted sporadically amongst the newly formed teams. It seemed as if though whether intentional or purely by happenstance a decision had been made amongst the group. Ruby and, her sister, the princess, and the silent girl from the day before had stuck close with each other. Similarly, Ren and Nora had stuck within close distance of Jaune and Pyrrha.
Jaune allowed a lofty thought to circle through his head. He would be content if these groups were the final decision. Though he hadn't had much time with either Ren or Nora he felt they were decent enough people. And their fighting abilities left little to be desired.
That being said he had to shake off the constant glare he was getting from one still rather miffed Schnee princess. It wasn't constant and it seemed when she wasn't failing desperately at curbing her new partners' overwhelming enthusiasm, she found the time to cast a piercing glare into the back of his skull.
Other than that, the group remained focused on simply making their way back to the cliffside. There had been no Grimm activity since their fight at the temple and that fact bothered Jaune if just a little. Not just for the fact he was still itching for a fight, but it also made him on edge.
It was a distinct possibility that the Grimm within the forest and been trimmed due to yearly initiations and school-based training exercises. Yet if that were entirely true older Grimm like the ones from earlier wouldn't still be around.
And what of that thing from earlier? Was it still nearby? Had others come across it. The questions twisted his stomach into knots and made him feel nauseous. But regardless he had assured Pyrrha he would come along, and he wasn't going to turn back simply out of a little uneasiness.
They were perhaps just a few klicks out. The cliffside was growing ever more into view through breaks in the trees.
"Hey, Jaune?" The soft voice broke him out of his musings. Turning his head, he glanced down at the young redhead who had met pace with him.
"What's up Ruby?" Though focusing his eyes on his new friend, he kept his guard alerted to around him. Though uneasy he would not be caught unaware.
"Just wanted to say you were pretty cool back there!" Came her usual chipper response. He couldn't make out any sarcasm or ill intent and her cheerful smile made it hard not to respond in kind.
"thanks. You were too you know? The way you took down that Nevermore was really something special."
"Oh…um well thanks." The mirthful grin gave way to an embarrassed smile almost like she was uncomfortable to receive the praise. "You really think so?"
"Never seen anything like it." Jaune couldn't help but laugh at her pleased grin. It almost distracted him from the second glare now piercing the back of his skull.
Breaking away from Ruby he turned to face the elder sister. He offered a slight wave of appeasement towards Pyrrha when she also stopped, signaling her everything was fine. As the others trudged past, he offered his hand towards the blonde.
"Listen, I know I said some things back there and maybe we haven't gotten off on the best foot…but truce?"
She eyed his outstretched hand with heed. Unwilling to put their past complications go so easily she relented if only an inch.
"I guess I got carried away with the big sister schtick," Crossing her arms she continued. "Ruby seems to like you. And I guess I should trust at least her to make the right decision. But that comment earlier at the temple, I can't just let it slide."
"Would it help if I said it out of misplaced anger?"
"No, not really." Tussling her hair, she let out a sigh. "I really don't like you. I can't place it but something about you really irks me."
"To be fair I think that's most people I've met here." Jaune relented.
"Yeah, gotta say you got the princess worked up into quite a fit." Thankfully, she let out a small laugh.
"Glad to see the nickname stuck."
"How could it not? Have you seen how she struts around?" Her small laugh turned into a belly-filled fit.
Jaune couldn't help but join in. Maybe it was rude and childish, but the princess probably couldn't hate him anymore so what was one more mocking remark.
Calming down Jaune offered his hand once more. "So not friends, but not enemies?"
"I can live with that." Yang conceded reaching out to shake his hand.
Just before they met, another screech, just like the one from before rung out across the forest. And with it, a tree came flying out of the shaded blackness of the forest. Splitting apart the two want-to-be huntsmen rolled to avoid as it careened past and slammed into the place they once stood. The dust picked up and clouded the area.
Jaune was immediately upon his feet, sword, and shield at the ready as he gazed into the blackness, waiting for whatever was in there.
"Yang!" He cried out "You there?!"
"Yeah," Came her distant response, "I'm good."
His relief was short-lived as the cry came again. Dropping his stance, eyes fixed forward, he waited.
It was a short wait as something else came flying forward. It shot past his side missing him by feet. His gaze never wavered forward but the dull sickening thud that accompanied the flying item caused him to pause. It may have just been imagination or paranoia but it sounded eerily familiar.
The sound of reinforcements arriving directed his attention back to the issue at hand. A yell from his left affirmed that the others had come back. Pyrrha was at his side in moments shield and sword at the ready. Ren and Nora were not far behind.
As the dust settled, he could make out the others had similarly rallied around Yang.
"Casualties." Came Rens calm tone.
"How many?"
"Two on the path up ahead, and it looks like one behind us."
"Alive?"
"The two are critical, and the other unknown."
Jaune was thankful Ren was so in control, it made this far easier. "Is the path ahead clear?"
Nora answered this time, her somber tone startled him. "No Grimm in sight, and we're about eight klicks back from home."
Jaune nodded and was about to call out to Ruby before another, much more human scream erupted from the trees.
A desperate pleading terrified scream rang out and made Jaunes blood run cold. He took notice that the other group was leaning into what very well may have been a charge forward.
"Stop!" He cried out, overpowering the scream with a solid commanding voice, all eyes on him. "It's bait!"
Taking one solid second to compose himself he issued forth his plan. "Ruby take you and your team up ahead, secure the casualties, and make sure the path forward is clear. Ren and Nora, you take the one behind us, if he can be saved prep him to move and rendezvous with Ruby's team. All of you make your way back to base and get help."
"Jaune, what about you?" Damn the compassion in Ruby's voice.
"Not to be rude but armor tends to weigh a bit. You're all much faster. I'll secure the rear." He cast a meaningful glance towards Ren and Nora who nodded in understanding.
With that, he looked to the last person in their makeshift lineup. "Pyrrha?"
"With you." She responded without missing a beat. He allowed a grateful smile to spread across his lips before facing back towards the threat at hand.
"Move!" And with coordination unbefitting of a group of strangers, they pushed forward in unity. The screaming persisted as the others made haste with their own tasks. It drove him nearly mad as the anger coursed through his veins, but he held firm.
As sudden, as it had started it came to a gurgling deafening end, fading into the uneasy quiet of the forest. In its place, the thundering shake of the ground erupted as whatever monster lay ahead charged.
Raising their shields and brandishing their swords the duo crouched winding up like a spring ready to release. From the blackness appeared a hulking figure and a flash of green before the trees unfortunate enough to stand in its way were torn from their roots. In concert with one another, the pair rolled to opposite sides to avoid the massive trunks.
Finally seeing the anonymous Grimm in broad daylight Jaune felt himself at a loss. What stood before them was a massive, hulking, Beringel. The Grimm resembled a gorilla with skull-plated armor adorning mostly its chest, ribs, and small portions of its thighs and biceps. Jaune had seen only a few in his lifetime. But they weren't supposed to be here. And more than that massive green crystal-like spikes were erupting from its back. Where it should have been red was instead a vibrant green. Also had he mentioned it was big. Way stupidly bigger than it had any right to be.
"It's a Beringel," He informed his partner. "They're native primarily to Mistral. They hit hard and are fast on their feet."
"Grimm are indigenous to certain regions?" Pyrrha asked before having to roll again to avoid another massive tree being flung in her direction. The thing had ripped it straight from the ground.
"Survive now, lesson later," Jaune called as he charged forward. Beringel were fast and powerful. If hit with their massive fists it would be a problem. But get close enough and their legs could be severed. After that just put a bullet in its-
The Beringel tore forward to meet Jaune. It was fast. Damn it was fast. He barely had time to raise his shield before the massive fist connected. The impact even dampened by aura drove the air from his lungs and sent tremors deep into his bones. Knocked off his feet Jaune went careening backward. Slamming into the tree behind him his vision faded black.
"Jaune!" Pyrrha called out before having to refocus her attention to avoid the massive creature slamming down upon her. Avoiding its fists, she managed a sizable slash to its leg before having to disengage and attempt to create space. The Grimm refused her the opportunity and chased after her.
Pyrrha found herself in a constant game of keep away, rolling and ducking to evade as the creature smashed, and swiped. It was all she could do to dodge, occasionally scoring a superficial cut that amounted to little more than a nuisance.
Jaune to his credit managed to stumble to his feet as his lungs remembered how to breathe. His tunnel vision wasn't helping him, but he pushed back into the fray regardless. As the creature focused on his partner, Jaune barreled forward. Shield high he leaped at the monster, aura helping the feat, and bashed it right across the ape's head.
The Grimm stumbled back in surprise and allotted Pyrrha the room she needed to escape, but not before scoring a nasty cut on the monster's unprotected bicep. Jaune dropped to his feet and back-peddled to regroup with his teammate.
"It's large, angry, and reeks," Jaune commented dryly, trying to calm his breathing.
"Are you talking about the Grimm or yourself?" Pyrrha teased, herself also taking the moment to catch her breath.
"Har, har, any ideas?" Jaune asked unamused. As it stood, he couldn't get close enough to take out its legs without getting beaten down. He got lucky with the shield and was certain it wouldn't happen again.
"Up for a little training?"
"Huh?!" Was Jaunes incredulous reply. Gazing back at his partner he caught a glimpse of something in her eyes and somehow understood. Calming down he looked forward as the Grimm recovered from its stumble.
"How did it go again?" He asked dropping his stance, Pyrrha mirrored after him switching her shield and sword in the opposite hands.
"Bend knees," In tandem, they moved. "Shield up, angle down."
As they moved the Grimm charged once more. Raising its massive right paw, it struck forward at Jaune. He sidestepped ever so slightly and with his angled shield deflected the blow downward. Seeing an opening he struck true and tore into the Grimms exposed chest with a vicious swing of his blade.
Hurt but unfazed the Grimm lashed out with its left but Pyrrha intercepted the blow much the same way and exposing an opening to her opponents' side, cut into the space between its shoulder and neck. Following through Jaune pushed his admittedly battered aura into a powerful kick that sent the monstrosity onto its back.
Pyrrha moved swiftly to kill the beast now that it was prone. However, as she moved to end the fight she failed to notice the green crystals on the Grimms back start to surge with power and glow ever slightly brighter. Jaune found himself catching on too late and tried reaching out to prevent her from what was to come.
As if in slow motion Jaune saw the mighty beast raise its passive fists into the ground as it lay on its back. Pyrrha charging forward as the monster channeled the power of its green crystals into its appendages and slammed down onto the earth. What followed was a massive surge of power and force. It knocked Jaune back feet and forced him to the ground. Pyrrha was not so fortunate. She went flying from the epicenter of the attack and crashed into and through trees. Her body went slack as her aura broke, finally, she came to a tumble and stopped a fair distance away. The only sign she was still alive was the low rise and fall of her limp body.
The Grimm raised itself back up and lumbered forward intent to finish the nuisance.
Jaune was tired, and he could feel his aura was just about out that last tremor had taken almost everything he had left. But as he grudgingly rose back to his feet, he found himself no longer in the forest.
Instead, he found himself back in that burning wreckage of a city he called home. He found himself back in that accursed cage back at camp. He was in that god's damned city of Grimm. He was back in that god's awful mountain pass. He was back where it always ended. Him battered and unable to save the ones he wanted to. And it broke him.
The familiar feelings swirled around him as he stumbled after the Grimm. The regret was there, it was always there. But with it came the familiar warmth of his anger, the one constant that kept the regret at bay if ever so slightly. It wrapped him in its embrace and flowed through him like a manifestation of his aura. But something else prickled at his very soul, the deep-rooted feeling that he had buried after that one cursed night. It coursed and pulsed. It was there waiting for him, calling to him.
RAGE
The Beringel stopped short of the fallen girl, a powerful intoxicating scent wafted into its nostrils. The overwhelming negative emotions caused a growl to emerge from his throat. A feast just behind him wafting and tempting him. Turning around he was met with nothing.
Nothing in sight through its green eyes. But the scent was all around, permeating the air it breathed. Confused it glanced around, eager to indulge itself in the powerful emotions just out of reach. Curiosity gave way to annoyance. Raising its fists high it let out a challenge to whatever was hiding from it. Screaming out it pounded its chest in an assertion of its strength and might.
Met with silence it turned back around, indignation overtaking it. It would eat first and hunt after. However, as it reached for its prey the ground suddenly surged forward. The Grimm found itself flat on its face. Confused it tried to rise only to be pounded from above with a hard blow of something metallic. It reached up with a swift movement trying to swat the assailant but was met with nothing before a sword tore through the back of its throat.
Jaune dug Crocea Mors into the back of the creature's neck and twisted it in. He yelled out in pure anger, matching the screech let loose by the Grimm.
He was knocked off balance and shaken off as the Grimm pushed itself upright with its powerful arms. Skidding to a stop he surged forward again. The Grimm was still recovering but swung its arm out once more and Jaune braced his shield, dug in, and took the blow. He wasn't fast or skilled enough to weave out of the way but damn it he could take a hit. He refused to be knocked down this time.
Crying out he felt his aura break as he dug in and angled his shield to push the appendage away. Stepping forward he raised his blade and slashed down unto the beast's ugly maw. He scored a hit across its right eye and was rewarded when the Beringel sent him flying back with a sudden kick. With no Aura, he swears something may have broken.
He didn't care.
Again, he charged, ducking out the way of a mighty swing, he slashed his blade up and scored another direct hit with the monster's left eye. Has the Grimm roared Jaune angled his sword down and rammed into its exposed leg? He ripped and tore into the leg and as it came apart he used every last bit of strength he had left to knock the Grimm onto its back with his shield.
Clambering onto its thrashing body he slammed the blade into its open neck. Rewarded with yet another crushing blow, this time to his side he coughed blood as the metal armor crumpled under the strain.
His blurred vision and labored breathing did little to deter him as he unslung his firearm. The weapon still loaded he forced it down the throat of the Grimm and fired. Again, and again.
"Just fucking die"!
Finally, it went slack and crumpled into nothing more than dust and ash.
Exhausted, bleeding, and out of aura he rose again and staggered towards his fallen partner. She was breathing, though faint. It was something. He could get them moving back towards base. Hopefully, the others had found help.
His planning was interrupted by the oh-so-familiar howl of a Grimm.
'Fuck…'
From the darkness emerged another threat. This one far more near and dear to Jaunes heart.
The Beowolves stalked forward, eyeing their wounded prey and salivating at the ever-tantalizing scent of overwhelming negative emotions.
Jaune cast another glance at Pyrrha before sighing. Rising back up ever unsteady he gripped the handle of his blade in one hand and played with the trigger of his weapon with the other. Turning to face them he let out a low laugh.
"This seems fitting. But careful boys, I bite." With that, Jaune Arc charged.
Well, if you made it here, what did you think? What are your thoughts? Your follows and comments are honestly the biggest reason I sat back down and wanted to make this happen. I may not be the most consistent updater but if you guys have fun while reading it I will without a doubt get that next chapter to you…. eventually.
A few things before I sign off. A big portion of how some of these fights turn out is the circumstances. In this story's narrative, Jaune and Pyrrha could have definitely won if they fought together all the way through. Also, if Pyrrha had not been blindsided she could have had a real fair fight at soloing the Beringel. However, as I wrote it and it turned out there just didn't work that way. I'm not trying to create an overpowered Jaune. In my experiences with reading, it takes a lot of the fun out of the fights and ruins stakes. Also, other characters WILL get their time to shine. But for right now it is still set up for Jaune and as a result, I want a greater focus on him. We all know how great Pyrrha is, we all know what team RWBY can do. But for now, until we move onto the next arc it's Jaune central. I hope that comes across alright. His interactions with others are rather curt and that is solely on me. Trying to find a voice for so many is way harder than I ever thought. But I will try to improve, and I hope you stick around to be a key part of this journey.
As for an update, Chapter 6 is probably going to be much shorter than this one and will be followed by a backward jump to meet up with younger Jaune. Yay! Regardless I sincerely hope you enjoyed it, and I would love to hear your feedback and thoughts. Thank you all so much. Until next time!
