One sunny afternoon, Gwen and Clarence decide to have a beach day with Rose, William and the twins. They all enjoy laying on the beach as Rose tries getting Emma to walk on her feet, but she stumbled on the sand.
"Aw, you okay honey?" Rose asked her daughter.
"Mama!" Emma said.
"You're doing great sweetie! You're getting better every day!" Rose said as she lifted her in her arms.
Meanwhile, William was trying to get Jack to walk on his feet, but he also stumbled on the sand.
"That's my boy! You're doing so much better!" William cheered.
"Dada!" Jack said.
"Up and at'em son!" William said as he lifted his son off the sand.
Gwen and Clarence smile at Rose and William helping their kids learn to walk.
"Think that'll be us after we're married?" Clarence asked.
Gwen thought for a moment.
"Sure. But only we need to decide when we'll be ready to have kids." Gwen said.
"Yeah." Clarence agreed.
Gwen sighed and laid back down on her beach towel and went to sleep. Clarence smiled at his fiancée and took a sip of his drink and stared at the ocean.
Suddenly, something got Clarence's eye. He noticed in the distance bubbles forming and he felt slight rumbling.
"Uh, honey?" Clarence asked.
"Yes, love?" Gwen asked in her sleep.
"There's something out there causing an earthquake, and it looks really big." Clarence answered nervously.
Gwen's eyes popped wide awake. She realized who it was and gets up from her beach towel.
"Gwen, what's wrong?" Clarence asked as Gwen magically packed up their belongings.
"I know who that is! We have to go now!" Gwen said fearfully.
"Who? Who is it?" Clarence asked.
"The most feared and well-known man-eating sea beast in the seven seas! Cala Maria!" Gwen fearfully answered.
"Woah, wait. That giant gorgon mermaid octopus-haired lady you warned me about? Didn't she try to eat Rose that one time?" Clarence asked, now remembering being warned about Cala Maria.
"Yes! But I managed to stop her just in time! Now, come on! We gotta get Rose, Will and the kids! Who knows what she'll try to do to them!" Gwen exclaimed as she grabbed Clarence's hand.
The couple approached the Smith family.
"Rose! Will!" Gwen called.
"Gwen? What's wrong?" Rose asked.
"It's Cala Maria! She's back!" Gwen answered.
Rose's eyes widened, remembering her experience with Cala Maria and feared for her husband and children's safety.
"She's not gonna eat me or any of my family!" Rose exclaimed as she grabbed Emma and William grabbed Jack.
The humans make a run for it when suddenly, Gwen felt something grab her foot and fell down.
"Not again." Gwen said fearfully.
Just then, Gwen was dragged down the sand, felt Cala Maria's hand grasp her body and lifted her up. Gwen was once again brought to Cala Maria's face in her fist.
"Oh, hey Cala Maria. Uh, how's it going?" Gwen nervously asked.
"I was in the neighborhood little minnow, when I noticed you and little krill were with some humans on the beach." Cala Maria answered.
"Uh, well we were just having a beach day and we were just leaving." Gwen nervously admitted.
"Don't go just yet. I want to get acquainted with those tiny human boys." Cala Maria said.
"Oh, you mean Clarence and William?" Gwen asked.
"Yes." Cala Maria said.
Just then, Cala Maria noticed Clarence bravely approaching the beach.
"Uh, Gwen? What's going on?" Clarence asked looking up.
Cala Maria reached her other hand down to Clarence, grasped him and brought him up to her face. Clarence is horrified of Cala Maria as he closed his eyes.
"So, you are the little plankton that Gwen is marrying?" Cala Maria asked.
Clarence opened his eyes.
"Uh… yes?" Clarence nervously answered.
"Wait, how did you know we're engaged?" Gwen asked.
"I heard through one of the ships I recently destroyed." Cala Maria answered.
"Oh." Gwen said.
"You're not gonna eat us?" Clarence asked.
"Now that you mention it, you do look tender and chewy. But I promised little minnow I wouldn't eat any of her loved ones." Cala Maria revealed.
Clarence looked at Gwen.
"Really?" Clarence asked.
"Yeah… all she asked for in return was another box of squid livers." Gwen nervously admitted.
"A little detail you could've mentioned earlier…" Clarence said.
"Sorry!" Gwen apologized.
Rose and William look confused as they put Emma and Jack in the baby carriage.
"What are they talking about?" William asked.
"I don't know. But I think Gwen's making sure Cala Maria doesn't eat any of us. She nearly ate me the first time I met her." Rose answered, recalling her first time meeting Cala Maria.
Rose bravely goes to the beach while William watched the kids. Rose approached Cala Maria.
"Gwen! Clarence! What are you doing?" Rose called.
"Ah little krill!" Cala Maria said as she placed Gwen and Clarence down.
Cala Maria grasped Rose and lifted her up to her face. Rose flinched for a second, fearing she might try to eat her again.
"So nice to see you again little krill." Cala Maria said as she petted Rose's head with her large finger.
"Uh… yeah. You too." Rose nervously answered.
"Is that human your husband?" Cala Maria asked, pointing at William.
"Y-y-y-yes?" Rose nervously answered.
William stood in the stand confused as Cala Maria looked at him. She gestures William to come over. He feared for Emma and Jack's safety, so he cautiously approached Cala Maria with the twins hidden in the baby carriage.
"Uh… hello?" William nervously greeted.
"You are the shrimp Rose is married to?" Cala Maria asked.
William nervously nodded until Cala Maria grasped him and lifted him up to her face.
"So nice to meet all of you." Cala Maria said, looking at the Smith couple in each hand.
Just then, Emma was heard from the carriage.
"Mama!"
Cala Maria's eyes popped and looked down at the carriage.
"Wait a minute!" Cala Maria said as she placed Rose and William down next to Gwen and Clarence.
She pinched the carriage and pulled it closer to her. Then she removed the hood, revealing Emma and Jack. Cala Maria gasped at the sight of the baby twins.
"Human larvae?" Cala Maria asked.
She reached her fingers and scooped the infants in her large hand. Rose gasped and attempted to stop Cala Maria, but she was too late.
"Don't you dare eat my daughter and son!" Rose yelled.
"Relax little krill, I just wanna hold the little ones. You never brought them here before so they might as well get to know me." Cala Maria said as she gently petted Emma and Jack.
Just then, Emma tried to get up on Cala Maria's palm.
"Oh, here, let me help you little girl larvae." Cala Maria gently said as she used the tip of her finger to help Emma stand up.
Emma started to stand on her two feet with help from Cala Maria. Jack tried to stand up with his sister.
"Oh, you too little boy larvae? Here, now." Cala Maria gently said as she used another finger to help Jack stand up.
Both Emma and Jack stand up on Cala Maria's palm and try to take their first steps once again.
"Come on little larvae, you can do it." Cala Maria said gently.
Emma tried taking her first steps while Jack fell down on Cala Maria's palm.
"Get up. Try again." Cala Maria encouraged Jack.
Jack tries standing up again and tries to take steps again. Gwen levitates herself and floats up and lands on Cala Maria's hand to help out.
"Here, let me help. They're trying to walk." Gwen said as she sat down on Cala Maria's palm.
"Emma! Jack! Look what I got!" Gwen said as she magically made two chocolate chip cookies appear in her hand.
Both twins smiled and reached their arms to her.
"You gotta come here to get them! Come here!" Gwen said.
Emma quickly took some steps towards her aunt, reaching for a cookie.
"There ya go sweetie! I'm so proud of you!" Gwen said happily as Emma took a cookie and started eating.
Jack whined about wanting the cookie until Cala Maria gently poked her finger at him.
"Come on little boy larvae. You want the cookie, you gotta go get it." Cala Maria said.
Jack tries once again to stand up and take steps. After Gwen and Cala Maria encouraging him, Jack finally takes his steps and reaches for a cookie.
"You did it Jack!" Gwen cheered.
Jack and Emma happily eat their cookies. Cala Maria raised her hand up closer to her face.
"Well done little ones!" Cala Maria said to the twins.
Rose and William get worried what Cala Maria would do to their children. But to their shock, Cala Maria gives the twins a big gentle kiss on their little heads. Rose fainted at the kiss, but William caught her in his arms.
"Wow, you really have a way with kids." Clarence said, amazed.
"Why thank you little plankton." Cala Maria thanked.
Just then, she noticed Rose fainted in William's arms.
"What happened to little krill?" Cala Maria asked.
"Oh, she suddenly passed out." William answered.
"I can fix that." Cala Maria said.
She reaches her other hand down, scoops an unconscious Rose up in her hand and lifted her up to her other hand. She puts both her hands together. Gwen used her ink pen to magically splash Rose awake.
"Oh! What happened?" Rose said after the splash startled her awake.
"You fainted." Gwen answered.
"What's going on?" Rose asked, noticing she was on Cala Maria's hand.
"I have a surprise for you little krill. Show your mama little larvae." Cala Maria said.
Emma and Jack started walking to their mother.
"Emma! Jack!" Rose said happily as she reached her arms to them.
"Mama!" Both twins called.
They both reach their mother as she embraced them.
"I'm so proud of you two!" Rose said.
Gwen and Cala Maria smiled at each other.
"Thanks." Gwen whispered.
"Of course. But don't forget, you owe me." Cala Maria reminded her.
"Oh yeah." Gwen said as she grabbed her ink pen.
She magically made another box of squid livers appear. Cala Maria places Rose and the twins back down on the beach with William and Clarence. Then she opens the box and eats a squid liver, to the human's disgust.
"Also, you owe me something else." Cala Maria said.
"What's that?" Gwen asked.
"A wedding invitation." Cala Maria answered.
Gwen's eyes popped, not sure if bringing Cala Maria to the human world is a good idea.
"Look, don't get me wrong. I'd love to have you come to the wedding. But the problem is the wedding is on land and will be in the human world. Plus, you wouldn't fit in the church or my parents' backyard where we're having the reception." Gwen explained.
Cala Maria laughed, to Gwen's confusion.
"Silly minnow! You have the magic inkwell! Remember? You can do anything!" Cala Maria reminded her.
"Oh…" Gwen said, feeling awkward.
"But that means I'd have to shrink you to the size of a human and put you in a bathtub of water. Does that sound good?" Gwen asked.
"Of course, little minnow. I'll just have you return me to normal size when the wedding's over." Cala Maria said, agreeing to the plan.
"Okay then." Gwen said as she and Cala Maria shake on it with her large finger.
Gwen magically gives Cala Maria a wedding invitation and grew it to her size for Cala Maria to read. Cala Maria grabbed a squid and squirted a little ink on the response paper, to the human's disgust. She handed it to Gwen as she used her ink pen to shrink the response note with the ink splat next to 'yes'.
"Okay then." Gwen said.
"Well, I better get going. I heard there's gonna be an armada sailing through the ocean. Keep me posted about the wedding." Cala Maria said.
"Okay, I will." Gwen nervously agreed.
Cala Maria placed Gwen down with the others and swam off into the distance. Rose looked at Gwen in shock.
"Seriously sis? You're bringing her to the wedding?" Rose asked.
"Sorry sis, but I knew if I didn't invite her, she'd probably eat us!" Gwen said defensively.
"Girls, calm down. She won't cause any trouble if she'll be human-sized." Clarence said, trying to calm down the sisters.
"Except she'd turn people into stone." William pointed out.
"Don't worry. I'll make her promise to not turn anyone to stone." Gwen said.
"Okay love. I think we should all get going." Clarence suggested.
So, everyone leaves the beach together and head back to the cottage. The Smiths return home with the twins in the human world and Clarence returned to his apartment.
Gwen joined the cups and Elder Kettle for dinner and heads off to bed. While laying in bed, Gwen wondered what would've happened if she hadn't escaped Inkwell Hell and if she agreed to marry the Devil. Gwen decided to ask her oracle friend Quadratus. After her second family goes to bed, Gwen leaves the cottage and travels to the ancient ring of stones.
Gwen knelt down to the pool of water and magically created a jawbreaker. She took a deep breath and dropped the jawbreaker in the water and waited until the water started fizzing.
"I hope I know what I'm doing." Gwen said to herself.
Just then, a bright light shone from the water and the wind started blowing.
"Your heart is full of questions and susceptibilities; you know wonder about the possibilities!" Quadratus called.
"Uh… I guess so?" Gwen said, unsure.
Quadratus's face appeared in the water.
"With your wedding coming up, things are at a level. Now you wonder what it would be like if you married the Devil." Quadratus rhymed.
"Well, I don't wanna marry the Devil. You know that. I just want to know what would happen if I did marry him? How it would've turned out?" Gwen asked.
"Are you sure you want to know?" Quadratus asked.
Gwen nodded.
"I warned Rose what would happen when you were in trouble. I told her that if you agreed to marry him, your torment will more than double." Quadratus explained.
"Really?" Gwen asked nervously.
"That's why I told her to never give up on you. She's been doing a great job with that too." Quadratus said.
Gwen smiled and sighed quietly.
"Perhaps if you were to see what it would be like if you married the Devil, you will be more determined to stop him and continue fighting him until the wedding vow ritual is complete." Quadratus said.
"How?" Gwen asked.
"To see for yourself, you need to go back to sleep, and a dream will come for you to keep." Quadratus answered.
"Oh, you wanna put some dream or vision in my mind while I'm sleeping?" Gwen asked.
"That's right my child. Now go back to bed!" Quadratus yelled and disappeared in the water.
Gwen leaves the ring of stones and returns home. She took a deep breath and went back to bed and went to sleep. When nothing seems to happen, she suddenly felt drowsy and fell into a deep sleep.
In her dream…
Gwen wakes up in her prison bedroom in Hell and she sees all the stuff she needed to get ready for the big day. She hears a knock at her door.
"Duh, ma'am? Are you awake?" Henchman called.
Henchman unlocks the door and enters with a cart carrying a plate of breakfast and coffee.
"Good morning, ma'am! Today's the day! You and the boss are finally getting married!" Henchman said excitedly.
"Oh… right." Gwen said nervously.
Gwen realized she was in a dream and was ready to see what being married to the Devil would be like. She took a deep breath, keeping her cool, knowing it was not real.
"Well, eat up ma'am! You've got a big day ahead of ya!" Henchman said excitedly.
Gwen eats her breakfast and drinks her coffee. Just then, a group of female imps enter Gwen's prison bedroom.
"Excuse us Miss Emmons? We have orders from the boss to take you to get you ready." One female imp said.
"W-w-where are we going?" Gwen nervously asked.
"To the dressing room!" Another female imp answered.
"Oh." Gwen said, now realizing the moment was coming.
Gwen is taken in a dressing room. The female imps give Gwen a white bathrobe and have remove her dress from behind a changing room divider and slipped into the bathrobe. Gwen complies and comes out still looked upset as the imps gesture her to sit down so they could start doing her hair and make-up.
They get to work, and they remove Gwen's glasses, stud earrings and gold necklace. They start doing her make-up with eye shadow, mascara, blush, lipstick and powder. Then they started doing Gwen's hair by putting some of her hair up and giving the rest some curls.
Once they finished her hair and make-up, the imps have Gwen stand up and a few imps bring in a beautiful ivory wedding gown with long see-through sleeves and red roses along with a beautiful veil on a sparkling tiara that the Devil specifically made just for Gwen.
The imps slip the dress on her and after finishing the adjustments, they have her put on some beautiful white heels with jewels on her feet and beautiful diamond earrings, necklace and bracelet.
Then they finish off by having two of the imps with wings fly up to Gwen's head and place the tiara on her head and the veil in place.
The imps step back and stare at Gwen and one of them said,
"You look very beautiful ma'am!"
Gwen doesn't answer as she was too upset to speak or even make eye contact. Just then, there was a knocking at the door, one of the female imps answers. It was Henchman and he asks,
"Uh, is the bride ready yet?"
"Yes, Henchman. We made her most beautiful bride ever!" The female imp answered.
"Perfect!" Henchman said.
He looks over his shoulder and then he says,
"In that case, the boss is ready too and he says it's time!"
Henchman leaves as the female imps grab a beautiful bouquet of red roses and give them to Gwen as they escort Gwen to the throne room where they are holding the ceremony. At the bottom of the throne steps, the Devil in a black tuxedo and a minister imp were waiting. An imp scatters flower petals and another imp carries the wedding rings on a small pillow. Gwen peeked from behind a pillar.
The Devil stands at the altar with King Dice and Henchman and the minister imp as the 'Wedding Overture' is heard playing. The imps take their seats as Gwen is standing behind a tall rock upset and hopeless as she is being guarded by imps.
The Devil signals the organist to stop the music and have Gwen stand at the end of the isle and get ready for her to walk down. The organist plays 'Here Comes the Bride', and Gwen is gestured to start walking. Gwen started walking down the aisle alone she tries to keep her cool since she knew this was just a vision sent by Quadratus.
Gwen reaches the alter next to the Devil and the music stops. The minister imp cleared his throat and said,
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here tonight to join this demon and this human in unholy matrimony."
Gwen looked at her reflection in her diamond bracelet and tears started falling. The Devil notices and makes a tissue appear and wipe her tears and fixes her make-up.
"Devil, do you take this woman to be your wife, to live together in the fiery darkness, to rule both worlds at your side, to have her forsake all her loved ones, to give her immortality so she'll forever be in good health and beauty for all eternity?"
"I do." The Devil answered.
"And do you Gwendolyn Mae Emmons take this demon to be your husband, to live together in the fiery darkness. To rule both worlds at the Devil's side, to forsake all your loved ones, to serve him with the magic inkwell, to obey the Devil's every whim for all eternity?"
Gwen hesitated and was about to say "No," until the Devil covers her mouth and says,
"Yes, yes, she does. Now finish this up!"
The minister says,
"Then if there is nobody here who objects to this union, by the power invested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss."
The Devil kisses Gwen as everyone cheered while confetti was thrown and the fires blazed higher. The Devil used his pitchfork to make a slightly smaller throne right next to his throne for his new wife Gwen. Then the Devil presents Gwen a little glowing vial. Gwen gulped, realizing it was the immortality elixir. The Devil magically opens the vial and forcefully makes Gwen drink the elixir. But to her surprise, she feels nothing.
Afterwards, the Devil carries Gwen down the altar to the network room to begin the wedding reception. A party starts with imps playing festive music and other imps dancing. The Devil socialized with his fellow imps and took a platter of deviled eggs and ate one.
Gwen looked around, trying to avoid the crowd. She accidentally sticks her hand near a fire, but to her shock, she doesn't feel any pain. She reached her arm into the flames to be sure, but she doesn't burn at all.
"Oh no. It really worked. I'm… a goddess now. I'm never gonna change. I'm never gonna grow old. I'm never gonna die. I'm gonna outlive my family and friends." Gwen said in shock.
"That's right my dear. We'll spend all eternity together. Now come along. It's time for our first dance." The Devil said as he took Gwen's hand.
He leads her to the dance floor as a red spotlight shone on them. They dance to the haunting melody Lacrimosa by Wolfgang Mozart. Gwen had some tears in her eyes, knowing she'd be forever trapped with the Devil if she agreed to marry him.
The Devil wiped her tears as they continued dancing. After the dance everybody applauded.
After the reception, the Devil carries Gwen off to his bedroom to turn in for the night.
After some time had passed, Gwen is now crowned Queen of the Underworld and rules alongside with the Devil. He dresses Gwen in a beautiful red gown with a sparkling crown. The Devil succeeded in conquering both the Inkwell Isles and the human world with help from the magic inkwell.
Gwen is depressed that she is now his wife and cannot break the marriage. After another day of torturing souls, the Devil goes up to his wife and held her tear-stained face. Then he felt her stomach, revealing that Gwen is pregnant with their first child.
"Isn't it wonderful my love? We get to start our very own family with our first child, our daughter. Isn't that what you wanted? A family?" The Devil sinisterly asked.
Gwen said nothing for she was too upset to speak and feels all alone without her family and friends.
Just then everything started spiraling around her and Gwen used her willpower to finally wake up from her nightmare.
Her dream has concluded.
Gwen waked up heavily breathing and crying. She hears Cuphead and Mugman come into her bedroom to check on her.
"Gwen? What's wrong?" Cuphead asked.
"I had a terrible nightmare I was married to the Devil, and I was all alone and miserable!" Gwen yelled then sobbed uncontrollably.
Both cups hop on her bed and hug her, trying to calm her down.
"Shh, shh, shh. It's okay Gwen. It was just a nightmare." Mugman assured her.
Just then, her fiancé Clarence entered her bedroom.
"Gwen? Are you okay?" Clarence asked.
The trio looked and saw Clarence.
"Clarence! What are you doing here?" Gwen asked as she wiped tears.
"I came over to check on you when I heard you crying. What's wrong love?" Clarence asked as he sat down on her bed next to her and the cups.
"I had a horrible nightmare I was married to the Devil and what it would be like. I'll be all alone if that were to happen!" Gwen said as she started tearing up again.
"Honey, calm down. It was just a nightmare. We're here for you." Clarence assured her as he hugged her.
Cuphead and Mugman decide to leave the couple alone and leave her bedroom.
"We're going back to bed. Good night." Cuphead said.
"We'll see you in the morning." Mugman added.
"You too fellas. I'll watch over her." Clarence said.
After they leave, Clarence settles in her bed and held Gwen close to him, making her feel safe in his embrace. After calming down, Gwen finally went back to sleep as Clarence went to sleep.
In the morning, Gwen wakes up and finds herself wrapped in Clarence's arms and smiled. She turned to Clarence's face and kissed him. Clarence started to wake up and looked at Gwen.
"Morning love." Gwen said.
"Morning honey." Clarence said back.
"Thanks for staying with me the whole time. You and my brothers." Gwen said.
"Always, Gwen. Always." Clarence answered.
They both get up and both get ready for the day. Clarence joins Gwen and her family for breakfast. Afterwards, Gwen and Clarence walk down to the Ancient Ring of Stones to talk to Quadratus. They both kneel and Gwen magically creates a jawbreaker and drops it in the water.
"So, you asked Quadratus to show you what it would be like to be married to the Devil? Why?" Clarence asked.
"Because I need to see how bad it would be and now, I learned that it's worse than I thought. It's a sign that we need to keep fighting the Devil until our wedding day." Gwen answered.
"Oh, okay." Clarence said, now understanding.
A bright light shone from the water and the wind started blowing.
"You have seen the vision of the horror of the marriage! Now, you must fight him with all your courage!" Quadratus called.
"Yes Quadrataus! I'm willing to do anything to stop this from happening!" Gwen said bravely.
Quadratus appeared in the water.
"Now you know what cruel fate awaits you, continue fighting the Devil is what you must do!" Quadratus said.
"Yes, keep fighting him until our wedding day!" Gwen answered.
"Correct my child!" Quadratus answered.
"Hey Quadratus? If it's even possible, would you come to the human world and help us perform the ritual?" Gwen asked.
"Of course, Gwendolyn. But for this to work, I need someone to scoop me out of the water and put me in some kind of large fish tank of water." Quadratus stated his conditions.
"That can be arranged." Gwen assured him.
"Thank you, my child." Quadratus thanked.
"We can't thank you enough for all you've done for us Quadratus." Clarence said.
"It's quite alright my boy. Good day to you both." Quadratus said and disappeared from the water.
Gwen and Clarence smiled at each other and kissed. Then, they both head back home. Gwen got more wedding preparations done and devised plans for certain guests like Cala Maria and Grim Matchstick. Gwen felt more prepared for the wedding and to stop the Devil once and for all.
