Fanfiction: A New Future*
Chapter 3: Hanabi's Investigation*
Hanabi woke up with the same question that had been gnawing at her ever since her father's announcement: Why Naruto? She had witnessed his strength during the Chūnin Exams and heard of his bravery in the fight against Gaara, but beyond that, she didn't understand why her father would want her to marry him. If she was to accept this arrangement, she needed to know more about the boy destined to be her future husband.
Today, she would find out who Naruto Uzumaki really was.
--
Hanabi made her way through the village, her eyes sharp and focused. Her first stop was Naruto's team. If anyone knew the real Naruto, it would be his teammates. She didn't know them personally, but she had heard enough about them to know where to find them.
Eventually, Hanabi found herself near the village's training grounds, where a pink-haired girl was practicing her punches on a training dummy. Hanabi had seen her around before but never spoken to her. She hesitated for only a moment before approaching.
"Sakura Haruno," Hanabi said in a commanding tone, making sure her voice carried.
Sakura stopped mid-punch, turning around to face Hanabi. Her brow furrowed in confusion as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. "Uh... yeah? And you are?"
"Hanabi Hyuuga." Hanabi said it like it should have meant something to the girl in front of her, but Sakura's blank expression didn't change.
"Right, well, what can I do for you?" Sakura asked, still confused about why the Hyuuga heiress was talking to her.
"I need to know about Naruto Uzumaki. Since you are his teammate, you would know him best."
Sakura blinked, clearly not expecting such a blunt question from a stranger. "Naruto? Why do you want to know about him?"
Hanabi's eyes narrowed slightly, growing impatient. "It's none of your concern why. Just tell me what I need to know."
Sakura crossed her arms, frowning slightly. "Well, he's loud, reckless, and kind of a troublemaker. But he's got a good heart. He's always looking out for his friends and never backs down from a fight." She gave Hanabi a sideways glance, still not sure why she was being interrogated about Naruto. "Why do you need this information, anyway?"
Hanabi waved off the question, unimpressed by Sakura's basic response. "Thank you for your time," she said curtly and turned to leave before Sakura could ask anything further.
As Hanabi walked away, she thought about what Sakura had said. Reckless and loud—those traits she had already observed. But the part about Naruto never backing down stuck with her. "Perhaps that's what Father sees in him," she thought to herself. Still, she needed more than that.
Her next stop was the one who had fought alongside Naruto—the last Uchiha, Sasuke.
--
Hanabi approached the Uchiha training grounds, finding Sasuke alone, practicing his kunai throws with deadly precision. His Sharingan was active, his focus sharp. The Hyuuga and Uchiha had never been on the best terms. Their clans were both prestigious, both considered the elite in Konoha, and that rivalry had bred tension. Hanabi braced herself for an unpleasant conversation.
"Sasuke Uchiha," she called out.
Sasuke didn't stop practicing, but his head tilted slightly toward her. "What does a Hyuuga want with me?"
Hanabi was unfazed by his dismissive tone. "I have questions about Naruto Uzumaki."
Sasuke's kunai hit the target with a solid thud before he turned to face her, his expression cold. "Why would you want to know about Naruto? I didn't think the Hyuuga cared about anything outside their own clan."
Hanabi met his glare with calm resolve. "Naruto is important to the Hyuuga now. That is all you need to know."
Sasuke's eyes narrowed, and for a moment, it seemed like he might walk away. But instead, he sighed and crossed his arms. "Tch. Naruto is reckless and annoying, but I'll admit he's stronger than he looks. He doesn't know when to give up, even when the odds are against him."
Hanabi nodded slightly, already hearing the same pattern of traits. "And you respect him for that?" she asked, curious to see if Sasuke's grudging respect aligned with what others had said.
"I don't respect him," Sasuke said sharply, though his tone softened slightly as he continued. "But I've fought with him enough to know he's not weak. He's the kind of idiot who will keep getting back up no matter how many times you knock him down."
Hanabi paused, taking in Sasuke's words. "I see. Thank you, Uchiha."
Sasuke turned away from her, picking up another kunai. "Whatever," he muttered, already returning to his training.
As Hanabi left, she couldn't help but wonder how Naruto's sheer persistence had managed to gain even a sliver of respect from someone like Sasuke. This only deepened her curiosity about the boy. "There's more to him than I thought," she realized. But her investigation was far from over.
--
Hanabi had barely left the Uchiha compound when she felt someone's presence behind her. Without turning, she activated her Byakugan, confirming the figure casually strolling toward her.
"Hanabi Hyuuga, right?" a familiar voice called out. "I was wondering when I'd run into you."
She turned to see none other than Kakashi Hatake, Naruto's sensei, leaning against a nearby tree, his signature book in hand.
"I heard you've been asking around about Naruto," Kakashi said, his visible eye curving into a lazy smile.
Hanabi blinked in surprise. She hadn't expected him to approach her directly. "Yes. I want to understand him better."
Kakashi's smile widened, and he closed his book with a soft snap. "Oh, I see. The Hyuuga heiress, digging up dirt on my favorite student. Should I be worried?"
Hanabi's eyes narrowed slightly. "This is a matter of clan importance. It's not some trivial game."
Kakashi chuckled softly. "Of course, of course. Well, what do you want to know? I'm sure I can give you a few interesting stories."
Hanabi frowned, unsure if Kakashi was teasing her or if this was just his usual demeanor. "I've already spoken to Sakura and Sasuke. They've told me about Naruto's persistence and his… energy. But I need to know more than that."
Kakashi's gaze softened, his teasing tone fading. "Naruto is a handful, I'll give you that. But when it matters most, he's the kind of person who will put everything on the line for the people he cares about. He's got a way of inspiring others, of making you believe that no matter how bad things get, there's always hope."
Hanabi raised an eyebrow. "Hope?"
Kakashi nodded. "He never gives up on anyone, not even people like me who are too stubborn for our own good. It's that kind of spirit that makes him special. He's not perfect, but he's someone who can change people."
Hanabi studied Kakashi for a moment, wondering if there was something more to what he was saying. "And you think that's enough? That it makes him worthy of my clan's future?"
Kakashi's smile returned, more gentle this time. "Worthy? Maybe. But you'll have to decide that for yourself, won't you? Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find Naruto to be full of surprises."
Hanabi, sensing the conversation was nearing its end, gave a polite bow. "Thank you, Kakashi-sensei."
Kakashi waved her off, already reopening his book. "Good luck, Hanabi. You're going to need it."
--
With all the information she had gathered, Hanabi was beginning to understand why Naruto was respected, despite his brash demeanor. But there was one final piece of the puzzle she needed to see for herself—where Naruto lived.
After asking around the village, she found her way to Naruto's apartment complex. When she arrived, she was struck by how rundown the building was. It looked neglected and worn down, with peeling paint and cracked windows. The place reeked of abandonment, the kind of place no shinobi—let alone someone who had saved the village—should live.
Hanabi activated her Byakugan, scanning Naruto's apartment. It was worse than she had imagined. The inside was small, cluttered with random belongings, and devoid of any proper care. The futon he slept on was tattered, the walls were scuffed, and the kitchen looked barely usable. It was disgraceful.
"How can someone like him live in such squalor?" she muttered to herself.
Turning on her heel, Hanabi made her way back to the Hyuuga estate with a growing sense of urgency. This wasn't just about Naruto's engagement to her—this was about his dignity as a shinobi of the village.
--
"Father," Hanabi said, her voice filled with uncharacteristic frustration as she entered Hiashi's office.
Hiashi looked up from his desk, his expression calm. "What is it, Hanabi?"
"I visited Naruto Uzumaki's home today," she said sharply. "The place is… unfit for anyone to live in, let alone someone who is supposed to be connected to the Hyuuga Clan."
Hanabi stood before her father, her usual calm composure cracking under the weight of her indignation. "His apartment is disgraceful. He's a shinobi who saved this village, and he lives in a rundown, neglected hovel. How can you expect me to marry someone if he can't even be treated with basic respect by the village?"
Hiashi's eyes flickered with a trace of surprise at her outburst, but his face remained stoic. He placed his hands together, resting them on his desk. "I see you've taken your investigation of Naruto seriously," he said, his tone unreadable. "It's good that you've noticed these things."
Hanabi clenched her fists, expecting a more direct answer. "Father, I don't understand why you would allow this to continue. Why would someone who is important enough for an engagement to our clan live like this?"
Hiashi stood up slowly, his posture as regal as ever. He walked to the window, staring out at the village in contemplation. After a long pause, he finally spoke. "You are right to be concerned, Hanabi. I was already aware of Naruto's living conditions."
Hanabi's brow furrowed, confusion mixing with her frustration. "Then why—"
"It's not that I allowed it to continue," Hiashi interrupted, turning to face his daughter. "I was waiting for the right time to intervene. This arrangement between you and Naruto is more than just a simple marriage contract. It's about building a future—one that bridges the gap between the Hyuuga and the rest of the village."
Hiashi's gaze sharpened. "Naruto's circumstances were not ignored, but changing his environment must be handled carefully. He is an individual with great potential, but he's also someone whose origins have always made him an outsider. The way he's treated reflects the village's misunderstanding of his worth."
Hanabi's eyes widened as her father's words sank in. "Then... you intend to change that?"
Hiashi gave a rare smile, one that was small and subtle but unmistakably proud. "Of course. I already have plans in motion. I'm looking into a new residence for Naruto—one that reflects his standing and the respect he deserves. You've noticed this issue on your own, which shows me that you are already thinking beyond just your personal feelings."
Hanabi blinked in surprise. "A new residence?"
Hiashi nodded. "Yes. It will be more suitable for someone with his future role, and for the family that will eventually come from this union." He paused, watching his daughter closely. "I haven't told Naruto yet, but I want you to understand that this engagement isn't just about the clan's strength. It's about supporting Naruto's growth and making sure he reaches his full potential."
Hanabi stood quietly for a moment, letting her father's words settle in her mind. She had expected her father to dismiss her concerns or to simply offer a superficial solution. Instead, he was taking Naruto's situation seriously, with far more foresight than she had imagined.
"Where will he move?" she asked, her voice more controlled now, but still filled with curiosity.
Hiashi's smile widened slightly. "That, my daughter, is something you'll see soon enough. I believe you'll find it to your liking. In the meantime, be patient. The days ahead will be important for both you and Naruto."
Hanabi, sensing the conversation was over, gave her father a respectful bow. As she turned to leave the room, she couldn't help but feel a strange mixture of relief and uncertainty. Her father had a plan—a plan that was bigger than just her marriage to Naruto. But that didn't change the fact that she still didn't fully understand who Naruto was or what their future together would look like.
As she walked down the hallways of the Hyuuga estate, Hanabi couldn't help but reflect on her interactions with Naruto's teammates. They all spoke of his persistence and strength, his ability to rise above adversity. Yet, seeing how he lived, it was clear to her that there were still so many parts of his life that were neglected or misunderstood.
"If I'm to marry him," Hanabi thought, "then I need to know more."
She activated her Byakugan as she neared the courtyard, her gaze extending far beyond the walls of the estate. As she scanned the village, her eyes settled on the small figure of Naruto walking through the streets, heading toward his favorite ramen shop. He looked lost in thought, unaware of her watching him from afar.
For a brief moment, Hanabi felt a strange pang of empathy. Naruto had fought so hard to earn his place in the village, yet he lived on the fringes of it. Despite everything he had achieved, the village still didn't see him the way they should.
"I will change that," she vowed silently.
With renewed resolve, Hanabi turned away from the courtyard and made her way to her room, preparing herself for the days to come. This was only the beginning, and she intended to be ready for whatever came next. If her father had plans for Naruto's future, then she would make sure those plans aligned with her own expectations.
Naruto might not be what she had envisioned in a husband, but he was someone worthy of respect—someone who could grow into a man capable of standing beside her. And for now, that was enough.
