The very best thing that happened on my Hawaiian vacation in 2009 was the night I proposed to Roxanne. On that night, we went to the Shining Moon, which was at that time the most popular and expensive restaurant in Honolulu. When I learned how quickly it got booked for every day, a night there during this vacation was the first thing I booked for it, even before the hotel, the attractions Roxanne and I wanted to visit on Oahu and the plane tickets and everything. And I'm still proud of myself for managing to get a table for two on the night three days before the day when we had to return to Spoonerville. The reason I wanted to take Roxanne there was because I felt now was the right time to propose to her and I felt that the Shining Moon would be the perfect place to propose to her. When I booked the place for the night, I told the receptionist I was planning on proposing to my girlfriend on that night and he told me that if I just brought the engagement ring with me, the manager would take care of the rest for that night.
The night finally came. I was wearing my smartest suit and Roxanne was wearing her beautiful purple dress and purple shoes. As we made our way to the restaurant, I was hoping everything would go well. I had my engagement ring with me. It was a brand new one I bought especially for Roxanne. I know I could have saved money by reusing the engagement ring I used when I proposed to Mona seven years ago, but I bought a brand-new engagement ring for Roxanne for two different reasons. The first one was because it was Roxanne, not Mona. And the second one was because if I used the engagement ring I used for Mona to propose to Roxanne, it would make me think and feel that history would be repeated. I could easily remember proposing to Mona and what she did to me immediately afterwards without that engagement ring. This new engagement ring that I brought for Roxanne had a diamond on it and it cost two thousand dollars. Even if I bought a cheaper engagement ring, it wouldn't stop me from worrying if she would like it or not, if she would like this restaurant or not and if this engagement night would be a success or not. What motivated me to keep on going through this night was even if I failed, I could say at least I tried instead of not doing it at all.
Roxanne was very impressed with the restaurant when she and I went to it. She thought the building was very beautiful and she was also very impressed with the waiters who served us. She liked our table we were sent to and she was surprised that ours was the only one in the whole restaurant that had a glass vase of Red Hawaiians Roses. And I was as well, at first, but then I remembered what the manager told me about how he would help to make this engagement night the best success it could possibly be. So far, I was pleased that this night started off great, at least.
Roxanne and I enjoyed what we ate and drank that night. For drinks, we had non-acholic cocktails, with me having a frozen blackberry smoothie and she having a pineapple and ginger punch, along with two glasses of tap water. For our starters, I had cheesy Hawaiian garlic bread and Roxanne had a bowl of pumpkin mushroom soup. For our main courses, I had a Hawaiian burger with fries and she had some Hawaiian style ribs with some fries. For our desserts, I had some of the restaurant's best shaved ice while she had a slice of Hawaiian cheesecake.
While we ate and drank, we talked a lot. We talked about how much fun we both had on this amazing vacation, even though it wasn't over yet, and what was our favorite parts of it. We both agreed that the very best part of it was spending it together. Then we talked about how much we really meant to each other, ever since we first met in high school and how much we missed each other when Roxanne was forced to live in San Siesta for eight years and how much both of our lives had been better since she came back into my life and then I praised for how well she did at college and how she managed to improve her life since she left San Siesta and then she praised me for helping her get into college and help her become the very best version of herself and the version of herself she's most proud of and then she praised me for coming from a tough childhood with no mother at the time and having very little to no friends and graduating high school as a C student to becoming a great college student and finishing college in three years and starting my work career from cleaning gyms to becoming the Head of the Sports Department at Spoonerville College.
So far, I was glad at how well this evening was going, but I still didn't let my guard down in case this could be a repeat of when I proposed to Mona and what she did to me afterwards and the possibility of Roxanne saying 'no' to my proposal didn't leave my head either.
"So, Roxanne, did you enjoy your meal?" I asked, after I paid the bill.
"Oh, Max," she said. "It's not just the best meal of this vacation. I think it's the very best meal of my whole life. I can't thank you enough for this."
"It's my pleasure," I said. "And I have something I need to ask you before we go back to the hotel."
"Sure. What is it, Max?"
"Before I ask you this question, I want you to be nothing but completely honest with me, whatever your answer is. If the answer is no, I'll understand. The last thing I think I want to do is make you miserable."
"Okay, Max. I understand. I promise you I'll be completely honest. What is it you want to ask me?"
This was it. The moment had finally arrived. It was now or never. I was still very nervous about this, especially what Roxanne would say, but I hid it as best as I could as I went for it. I got down on one knee and showed her the engagement ring box. I opened the box and revealed to her the engagement ring in it.
Roxanne gasped as she looked at it. "Oh, Max! This ring is absolutely gorgeous!"
I was happy that she liked the ring, but here came the most important part of the whole night. "Roxanne, will you marry me?" I asked.
Then she smiled as happy tears fell down her eyes. "Yes! Of course, I will marry you, Max Goof!" Then she got off her chair, hugged me and kissed me.
Then the whole restaurant was filled with the sounds of applause from the other customers, the waiters, the restaurant manager and even the head chef, the cooks and all the kitchen staff.
Before my new fiancée, now wearing her engagement ring, and I left the restaurant, we thanked the restaurant manager for helping to make my engagement to Roxanne go the very best way it could possibly go and I gave him an extra twenty dollars for all his incredible efforts and he told me what an absolute privilege it was doing it for me and Roxanne. Then Roxanne and I went back to our hotel room and we continued to celebrate our engagement by getting naked and having amazing sex with each other.
The engagement celebration continued after Roxanne and I finished our Hawaiian vacation. Once my family and our friends heard about it, they came over to our house and we threw a very special engagement celebration party. And I was very happy that my proposal to Roxanne was a triumph and that she didn't do anything that Mona did afterwards and that history wasn't repeated.
