Chapter 19: Mine

He had this blank stare on his face. Not much had changed about him. He wore different clothes and different shoes. He even styled his hair differently but at the end of the day. He was still him, and that was not a good thing. That meant he still lacked accountability. He was still childish. He was still a dick and I wanted no part of it.

"You look nice," he said.

"Thank you? I guess. Inuyasha what is this, and how did you find out where I lived yesterday."

He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked away from me.

"I told the secretary I had some manuscripts to drop off to you. At Sesshomaru's request. She didn't ask any questions after that."

"Okay, what was so important that you needed to see me at my house?"

He looked up at me.

"I wanted to apologize."

"For what exactly?"

"For all the terrible things I said to you. I shouldn't have said them to you. I was being a dick. You deserved better than that."

Such a lukewarm apology.

"Yes I do and yes you were. Why apologize now? It's almost been a year. What's changed?"

"I couldn't stop thinking about you. I don't like how we ended, you know? It just feels like had I been a little more receptive and understanding; not so oblivious… then maybe we could have worked out. Maybe we still could?"

I put my hand up. "First and foremost how you left me made me glad we were never more than just friends. I was too kind and too understanding. I gave a lot of myself when I should not have. We're just too different. It wouldn't have worked out between us-

"You mean how it's working out between you and my brother?"

There you are. There is the real you.

I sighed. "Some apology this was. You really will never change will you?"

Another car pulled up and parked behind him. I rolled my eyes when I saw who came out of the car. She came running up beside him. She slipped her hand into his and laced her fingers around his. He took a few seconds to hold her hand back. That didn't go unnoticed by her.

"Honey, there you are. I was wondering where you'd gone," she said kissing him on the cheek.

"Sorry Kikyo. I just ran into Kagome. We were catching up while I was waiting for you."

He was so full of shit.

She wasted no time showing off the ring on her left hand; brushing her hair over her ear slowly.

"I'm glad to see you two are together."

She smiled at me. I knew it was fake as hell.

"Thank you," she said. "It took a little work, but nothing could come between Inuyasha and me. Our love is just too strong."

I choked back a laugh. "I love that for the both of you. What are you guys doing here anyway?"

She smiled. "Inuyasha didn't tell you? We both work here now. His father was nice enough to give us some jobs here. He's already done so much for us. He bought us a new house and everything. Did he give you a job too?"

I smiled. "No. I interviewed for the position and got in on my own."

"Oh lovely, then we'll all be working here together. That'll be fun. Inuyasha why don't you go in first? I'd love to catch up with Kagome too."

She kissed him goodbye, and we watched him walk off. She didn't speak until he was inside.

"Listen bitch stay away from him."

I smiled.

"Glad to see you haven't changed Kikyo, and I have no interest in Inuyasha."

"That's bullshit," she said. "He said you had a thing for him since you guys were kids."

"Exactly. Had. That means past tense as in no more. If anything you should be telling him to stay away from me. I know how to be loyal."

Her eyes narrowed. "What is that supposed to mean?"

I shrugged. "Take it however you want. Besides, I already have the better Taisho."

She folded her arms and smirked.

"I don't see a ring on your finger."

"I don't need an engagement ring. His beast chose me. Did Inuyasha's choose you?"

She stayed silent.

That's what I thought.

"Anyway, unlike yours, mine respects me and cares about me. He's not off trying to be with someone else even though he's engaged."

Her shoulders sank.

"You're lying. He wouldn't do that to me."

"You mean just like before?

She didn't say anything. She just scowled at me.

"Kikyo look believe what you want. I am not going to try to convince you otherwise. You know who Inuyasha is. Like I said he's all yours. You can have him and his money. I want neither of those things. All I want is for the two of you to stay the hell away from me. If I have to tell you this again, I won't be so nice about it the next time." I snapped.

I stomped away from her and headed into the building already in a mood.

What a way to start my morning.

I headed up to Sesshomaru's floor. He was already there waiting for me. His eyes snapped up from his laptop.

"What is wrong - You have run into Inuyasha."

I set my things down on the desk.

"You knew he'd be working here?"

"I only found out this morning. I waiting for you to come into the office before I told you. I did not think he would arrive this early, and run into you. Our father believes he needs structure."

"So he sent him here to you."

He nodded. "Correct."

"I did not know you were a babysitter."

"I was not thrilled about the news either."

"Kikyo as well?"

"A package deal it seemed."

This is just great.

He got up from his desk and came over to me.

"What is wrong?"

I ran my fingers through my hair.

I sighed. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to be crabby towards you, and I'll tell you later."

"You do not need to apologize. It is alright. Also, there is something else I need to tell you." He said

I rolled my neck.

"Oh no, there's more?"

I turned when I heard the door open.

"Kouga?" I said in disbelief.

"The something just walked in," Sesshomaru whispered in my ear.

"Kagome?"

He was just as shocked as I was.

This day just kept getting better.

Sesshomaru stepped forward. "Mr. Ookami is one of the new copywriters on the fifth floor."

I looked up at him.

"I am not in charge of hiring," he said.

She looked up at me. A look that demanded an explanation.

"I am not in charge of hiring." I reminded her.

I did not like him being here any more than she did. In fact, it angered me. I could smell his excitement on him. The moment he laid eyes on her. If he'd had a tail it would have begun wagging. I hated the little smirk on his lips when he'd said her name. Inuyasha was one thing, but having him hear as well was another. As for Kikyo, I'd find out what their issues were later.

"It's nice to see you again Kagome," he said.

"Ms. Higurashi." I corrected. "This is a workplace, and you must conduct yourself as such."

He cleared his throat. "Yes sir. I will see you later Ms. Higurashi."

"No. You stay. There are some things I need to discuss with you. Kagome, would you please excuse us for a few minutes?"

She grabbed her phone and manuscripts. "Gladly," she said running out of the room.

"Is there going to be a problem Mr. Ookami?"

"I do not have a problem, sir."

"Are you insinuating that the one with the problem is myself?"

He cleared his throat. "Back when you were my professor, you gave me a hard time before you suddenly quit. Now, it seems you still hold some ill will towards me and I am not sure what for."

"You will stay away from Kagome," I ordered.

"You acted this way towards me because of Kagome?"

"Ms. Higurashi." I corrected.

He clenched his jaw. "Why do you care if I get close to Ms. Higurashi."

"She is mine."

His eyes went wide. "You two are mated?"

"No, but she is mine," I repeated.

He smirked. "Then you have no real claim to her. I see no real reason to stay away from her. Unless you'll fire me if I don't?"

I stepped closer to him. "I could fire you. I could make it so that you could never work anywhere in this city again, but that would be too easy. I will keep you here and let you watch."

"Watch what?"

"I will let you watch what you cannot have."
