Chapter 10: Best Boss Bond Level
Osakabehime's room was almost always quiet. She tended to keep to herself, had few friends, and enjoyed curling up with a good book more than many thought was acceptable. And, truthfully, if they actually knew what type of books she preferred when alone, they would not be surprised that she preferred those books to the company of a handsome man.
Those books were always expertly hidden when Osakabehime entertained guests, and the only guests she ever invited into her room were her fellow seconds. They were an unusual crowd, at least as far as the type of company Osakabehime was expected to keep.
Chloe and Katsushika were born gossips, and spent of most of their time yapping at each other or anyone else who would listen to them. Caster of Midrash was not above participating in gossip, always had juicy news, and since other Casters tended to stay tight-lipped about what went on among them, it was guaranteed that no other second had heard her news first. Medusa perhaps had the most in common with Osakabehime in that she generally wanted to be left alone, but always attended the get-togethers, considering the invite itself to be an honor.
The latest such meeting started off as expected: Chloe revealed that Mash and Gorgon had been on several dates, and had also been seen holding hands. Caster of Midrash claimed that was because Gorgon had been handing Mash paperwork at the time, and their fingers merely happened to touch.
There was currently a pool as to how long the couple would last. Osakabehime had bet three months exactly, counting on Shirou to either do something supremely embarrassing that made Mash swear off dating altogether, or for Shirou to be flattened by Gorgon, causing Mash to end the relationship out of guilt. Being rather knowledgeable on motives for and methods of death, many other Assassins had made similar wagers, none of them lasting beyond three and a half months. Indeed, most Servants were convinced the couple would fail for various reasons, a popular one being that Mash and Gorgon were rarely physically affectionate and seemed more like co-workers than a couple.
Chloe was also convinced that the couple was doomed, but she was not actively rooting for them to fail, and was genuinely hoping they would make a spirited go of it, whatever that meant.
Caster of Midrash was more concerned with how the couple would impact daily operations. This made sense, as she in particular was involved with funding various ventures, so keeping things running smoothly was of great importance to her. Therefore, she did not especially care what the couple did, so long as they remained professional and did not let their personal lives negatively impact their work... but she had also bet twenty mana prisms that they would implode around two months.
What this meant was that Chloe was continually looking for signs that the couple was doing well, while Caster of Midrash tended to explain away supposed romantic gestures as tricks of light or nervous twitches. This had resulted in several passionate debates between them, which was odd in that they'd always gotten along well before. But Osakabehime knew that shipping was serious business, and wisely kept her mouth shut while they were arguing.
That is, until they suddenly veered off on an unexpected tangent.
"You can't believe in love because your Boss keeps himself shut in that dusty old treasury, and would rather count his money than spend time with anyone!" Chloe shouted.
Caster of Midrash's fur stood on end, a clear sign that she was deeply offended. "Gilgamesh does NOT allow dust in his treasury, he knows exactly how much money he has at all times so there is never a need to count it, and he likes spending time with me just fine! Your Boss can barely stand the sight of you, so you're so desperate to believe all other relationships can work because yours doesn't!"
Chloe turned red. "Take that back! My Boss loves me! How do you think I even became the second for the Archers?!"
"Because you were the only one that didn't hate or fear working closely with her. It certainly wasn't because she liked you."
With an angry shriek, Chloe lunged at Caster of Midrash, but was snatched out of mid-air by Medusa, who finally had to sit on Chloe to keep her in place.
Caster of Midrash seemed very startled. "I wasn't trying to insult you, Chloe. But you can't actually believe that Ishtar is fond of you? She doesn't like anyone!"
"She likes me!" Chloe yelled.
"That would be easier to believe if you were gem-encrusted," Katsushika added.
Chloe glared at her. "You don't know what you're talking about! I bet my Boss likes me way more than any of yours likes you!"
There were some exchanged glances, and then everyone except Chloe burst out laughing.
"That was funny, I needed a laugh," Osakabehime sighed, wiping away a tear. "You can let her up, Medusa, nobody's going to fight anymore."
Medusa cautiously stood up, and Chloe scrambled away from her at once. Caster of Midrash bent down and offered a helping hand and a hopeful smile, which Chloe reluctantly accepted. Apologies were exchanged, and soon the two were cuddling on the far end of Osakabehime's bed, Chloe because she enjoyed cuddling in general, and Caster of Midrash because she was so very nice to cuddle with.
"Chloe did bring up an interesting point, though," Osakabehime said after a moment. "Who does have the best relationship with their Boss?"
"I do," all of them said at once.
Osakabehime snorted. "No offense, guys, but Jackie adores me. You'd all lose this bet."
"Are we betting, then?" Katsushika asked, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
Osakabehime was a little caught off guard. "Uh... sure, why not? Are the rest of you in?"
They all glanced at each other. No one was opposed.
"So, how do we decide a winner, exactly?" Medusa asked. "It's not as if we have a clear-cut way of determining the strongest bond-"
"But we do!" Chloe cried excitedly. "The Bond Level system!"
"Chloe, that measures our bond with Master," Caster of Midrash pointed out.
"But there must be a way to adapt it! I mean, surely the all-knowing Casters can-"
"Oh, hang on," Osakabehime interrupted, scowling. "If you're about to suggest that your 'mom' can magic something out of thin air that measures Boss bond levels, I call shenanigans. Or, at least, we can't trust her not to slant things in your favor. And we can't trust other Casters for the same reason, though more for Caster of Midrash's sake."
"That's fair," Caster of Midrash agreed. "We need unbiased aid."
Mash stared at the gathered seconds, then shook her head. "Really? This is how you spend your time? Making silly bets?"
"It's not a silly bet!" Chloe disagreed. "It's a, um, bonding exercise! No pun intended."
Mash groaned. "You know what, fine. If it'll get you to stop bugging me, let's do this thing." She picked up her black clipboard, held it over her head, and startled everyone by shouting with no warning, "LORD CALCULATION!"
At once, the clipboard became a large calculator. Mash tapped a few keys on it, then nodded. "Yes, this will calculate Boss bond levels with uncomfortable accuracy."
"Why uncomfortable?" Medusa asked.
"Because I estimate there's a ninety percent chance that one of you is about her get her feelings hurt," Mash replied, looking at Chloe a bit too long before turning away. "Now, for the sake of precision, I think you should each ask your Boss to do something that is firmly outside of their comfort zone. So if they agree to it, in that moment, they'll be doing it mainly as a favor to you, so that should give the calculator an excellent reading as to how fond they are of you. And we should all agree on what these asks will be right now."
Chloe looked extremely confident. "I'm gonna ask Ishtar to lend Maanna to me."
Katsushika laughed before she could stop herself. "She'll never agree to that!"
"Which makes it a perfect favor to ask," Mash added. "Medusa?"
"I will ask my Boss to allow me to stop bathing for two weeks in a row," Medusa replied.
Everyone stared at her, deeply impressed.
"That... is pretty good," Mash admitted. "Caster of Midrash?"
"I will ask Gilgamesh to sign over total control of his treasury to me for three days straight."
Mash stared at her. "You're confident, I see. Katsushika?"
"If Chloe is going to be bolder than everyone else, I can't let her do it alone. I'll ask my Boss to lend me Excalibur Morgan."
"Nice," Mash said. "And you, Osakabehime?"
"Uh... I'll ask Jackie to only kill male mobs. In broad daylight. For a whole day!"
Everyone stared at her, very much unimpressed, but no one argued.
"Whaaaaaat?" Jack whined. "Why do I have to do that?"
"As a favor to me," Osakabehime said firmly. "Because I'm asking you nicely."
Jack pouted. "I dunno..."
"It's not like I'm asking you not to kill anyone at all for a day. That would be unreasonable."
"Yeah..." Jack agreed hesitantly.
"So this is easy, then. After today, you can kill all the pretty girl mobs that you want."
"I guess so," Jack murmured, still looking unsure.
Osakabehime knew she had to sweeten the deal. "And, if you want, we can bully Carmilla into letting us borrow her iron maiden. There's some hills nearby perfect for sledding."
"Mmm... okay!" Jack chirped.
Osakabehime grinned and patted Jack's head. "Thanks, Jackie."
"I'm not sure why she wasn't more confident in the favor," Mash murmured, staring at her calculator before showing it to the others. "They've got a bond level of 8. Not bad at all."
"But it's not like Jack agreed right away," Chloe pointed out. "Mine will definitely be a 10!"
"Keep telling yourself that," Mash replied. "Medusa, you're next, but you aren't seriously going to stop bathing, right?"
"Of course not," Medusa assured her. "The point of this is to gauge our bond level. Once I gain my Boss's approval for this favor, there will be no need to see it through. I will explain everything to her later."
"You want to what?!" Ishtar shrieked, dropping her umbrella drink.
"I feel it is necessary, Ishtar-sama," Medusa explained. "Gorgon has become more bold lately in stalking me, and I would like to put a stop to it permanently. With her senses being as strong as they are, I am sure that my failing to bathe for two weeks will offend her nose enough to where she will never want to come near me."
"Okay, I get all of that, but you are going to seriously reek!"
"Of course, I will find somewhere else to take shelter for the duration. I would not want to trouble my teammates. And as for my duties, though she is not officially a Rider, I am sure that Chacha can cover for me. You have always wanted her to earn her keep, and now she can."
"For two weeks," Ishtar said, gritting her teeth. "This is only for two weeks, and then you'll be back, and Anne and Mary can scrub you down thoroughly, right?!"
"I would not be at all opposed to that, Ishtar-sama."
Ishtar grumbled a bit, but finally nodded. "Fine! Do what you must! But I'm telling you right now, if Gorgon is causing us this much trouble, the only reason I don't get rid of her is because she's still technically you!"
Medusa winced, but nodded. "I appreciate your consideration, Ishtar-sama."
"Medusa takes the lead with a 9," Mash said, showing them the calculator. "Though, it actually dipped to an 8 for a few seconds. Baths are serious business for Riders."
Osakabehime was not happy. Still, if Medusa did win the bet, she would at least not brag too much, or at all, where the other seconds certainly would have.
"I'm going next!" Chloe decided. "You guys will be amazed by how close me and my Boss are!"
Once again, this was met with disbelieving glances, but no one argued.
Despite Chloe's assurances, no one actually believed she would succeed.
Indeed, the second Chloe marched away confidently to speak to her Boss, Mash immediately directed the others to stand behind her, and held out her calculator in front of her, clearly braced for impact.
Soon, there were numerous explosions nearby, as if the heavens themselves had opened up to rain down righteous fury. Chloe ran past a few seconds later, slightly singed but otherwise unharmed.
"I have good news and bad news, Chloe," Mash said slowly. "The good news is that your bond level is currently 0."
Chloe glared at her. "What's the bad news, then?"
"It was lower than that when you were running away. Apparently your Boss has calmed down now, and has no strong feelings toward you one way or the other. Which I suspect may be for the best, you don't want her to remember this..."
"Sorry, Chloe, but why did you think you were going to win this?" Osakabehime asked, genuinely curious. "Your Boss can't get through one meeting without glaring at you at least a dozen times. You would have had better luck approaching Rider Ishtar, and she still hasn't forgiven you for breaking into the pool."
Chloe pouted. "I was counting on my Boss to remember that and be glad I asked to borrow something of hers, rather than taking it without permission."
"I'm pretty sure Ishtars don't think that way," Katsushika murmured. "I'll show you how it's done."
The Sabers had taken over the parking lot for a few hours to train. At the moment, Arturia Lily and Rama were sparring, while Arturia Alter watched over them with a blank expression.
Even Chloe was not so clueless as to interrupt them. "M-Maybe we should come back when she's not busy."
Katsushika laughed. "Why? Don't be silly, I'll ask her right now."
"No, wait-!"
But Katsushika had already walked up to Arturia Alter, showing no fear. "Hi, Boss!"
Arturia Alter blinked and turned to her. "Ah, Katsushika. Have you come to join us?"
"Not exactly, I'm more into the solo training right now. But I get the feeling my swords aren't strong enough, so could I please borrow yours for a bit?" She clapped her hands together and winked for extra effect.
Even Arturia Lily and Rama, who had been ignoring the conversation so far, stopped what they were doing, and stared in shock and fear.
Chloe groaned and shook her head. "This will never work-"
Arturia Alter stared. The very air around her body seemed to darken. The aura of menace that permanently surrounded her suddenly increased threefold. The ground beneath her feet splintered. And, ever so slowly, she extended a gauntlet-covered hand.
Chloe covered her eyes with her hands, too afraid to look.
Arturia Alter clapped Katsushika on the shoulder. "I am glad to see that you are taking your training so seriously. And it is clear from this reaction that Excalibur Morgan is eager to guide you on your continuing path to perfect swordsmanship." She drew the great sword and handed it over with reverence. "Be sure to train extra hard, my young apprentice."
Katsushika beamed and handed the sword to her octopus, which swelled slightly at the added dark power. "Thanks, Boss! You're the best!" She even gave Arturia Alter a quick hug, which was in no way rejected, and then skipped away.
"I can't believe that worked!" Chloe said for the sixth time.
"Get over it," Mash advised. "She scored a perfect 10." She glanced at Katsushika, who, far from training with the sword, was currently using it as a bug zapper. But since it was working, nobody complained. Much. "Anyway, that only leaves-"
"I admit defeat," Caster of Midrash sighed. "I'm sure my Boss will grant me the favor, but I'm equally sure our bond level isn't as high. But I'll go through with it, since everyone else did."
Caster Gilgamesh paused only slightly as he reached a document in the pile that seemed somewhat irregular.
"Something wrong, Boss?" Caster of Midrash asked pleasantly.
"Why are you asking me to sign over control of my treasury to you for three days straight?" he asked, not angry, only curious... so far.
She knew that honesty was the best policy when dealing with him. "To win a bet."
"And what would you win?"
"We didn't really decide, so... mostly bragging rights."
Gilgamesh considered that silently. "Well," he said at last, quickly adding his signature to the document before handing it to her, "it is only right that one who is superior, should boast loudest and longest."
"7 is a respectable score," Mash announced, looking up from her calculator, "but that means that our winner is Katsushika." After a pause, Mash added, "What does she win, anyway?"
"We never decided," Medusa realized.
"So Chloe almost got blown to bits for nothing?" Mash asked.
"Pretty sure that would have happened even without the bet," Osakabehime muttered, softly enough where Chloe did not hear her.
"I think our collective bravery deserves a considerable reward," Caster of Midrash stated. "Ice cream for us all! My treat!"
There was no announcement, but there did not have to be.
At the next meeting, Ishtar arrived as she always did, hovering several feet above the ground. The only real difference was that, instead of being followed by a walking Chloe, there was a second goddess floating alongside Maanna. It was not immediately obvious that she was a goddess, however, as her outfit (an overly large sweater, sunglasses, and a baseball cap) gave the overall impression of a girl (though a very pretty one) on vacation. But as she was with Ishtar, and remained floating with Maanna while Ishtar took her usual seat, she had to be a goddess.
The meeting proceeded in a routine fashion, and at no point was Chloe's absence mentioned. If not for a few concerned glances between Caster of Midrash and Katsushika, even less Servants would have noticed. By the meeting's end, however, it was clear that Ishtar, at least, was not as visibly annoyed by her companion. Which was not to say that she was happy with the change, only that she wasn't as unhappy as she generally was. This was not at all comforting to anyone who was concerned for Chloe's well-being.
But even that was cleared up as the elevator suddenly dinged, and Chloe emerged from it, only to come to an abrupt stop when she spotted the goddess who was obviously her replacement.
"You're late, Chloe," Mash pointed out.
Chloe slowly held up a note. "I was told the meeting was delayed."
Mash shook her head. "It wasn't, and I didn't send out any note. Also, I don't use golden ink."
Chloe frowned at Ishtar, who was firmly pretending Chloe wasn't there. "Boss?"
"She's not speaking to you," Ishtar's new second announced. "And effective immediately, if it wasn't obvious, you are no longer her second."
Chloe took this rather well, all things considered. "And I suppose you are?"
"That's right."
After a slight pause, Chloe said, "If this is how Heavenly Hosting operates, maybe it's for the best that I'm out."
Ishtar scowled, but remained silent.
Ishtar's second shook her head. "Your pettiness only confirms that you are unfit to be Ishtar's second, Chloe."
"Oh, and you aren't petty?" Chloe demanded.
"I absolutely am. The difference is, my pettiness does not threaten Heavenly Hosting's operations. You are lucky that Ishtar decided that we are going public today. Otherwise, we would have to deal with you more harshly." She snapped her fingers. "Medusa. Restrain her."
Chloe laughed. "Are you kidding me? Medusa isn't going to-"
But Medusa swiftly moved behind Chloe, grabbed her arm, and an instant later, Chloe was pinned to the floor, with Medusa sitting on her chest.
"Medusa! What are you doing?!" Chloe shrieked. "Why are you obeying her?!"
"I have my orders," Medusa said simply.
"No, you don't! She isn't your Boss! You're a Rider!"
"Exactly," Medusa agreed. "How is it you know about Heavenly Hosting, but fail to understand that much?"
"All I know is that Ishtar created it! What does that have to do with you?"
"The Ishtars created it," Medusa corrected. "Apparently you thought only Archers were involved. I understand why you made that mistake, but-"
"Hush, Medusa," Ishtar's second interrupted. "She has been told enough."
Medusa nodded. "Apologies, onee-sama."
"It's fine," Euryale said, removing her sunglasses. "Chloe, it's nothing personal. Not for me, anyway. But it was never going to work out. You can't possibly understand how a goddess thinks. It's a shame, we could have put your mana draining skill to some excellent use. But you're a liability. We can't have you causing problems for us."
"Hold on," Mash said sharply. "Chloe hasn't done anything to rate being dismissed from Team Archer."
Euryale blinked. "Oh, is that what you were thinking? No, we're fine with Chloe staying on the team. She simply won't be taken into Ishtar's confidence anymore. Which is true of most Servants, frankly, so Chloe is hardly being excluded especially."
"Then what's the point of restraining her?"
"Merely a reminder that there are consequences for running afoul of a goddess." Euryale snapped her fingers again, and Medusa instantly released Chloe. "There, you see? No lasting harm done."
Chloe scowled and hopped to her feet. "Mash, can they really get away with this?"
Mash sighed. "Unfortunately, yes. I made a point to ask Master several times. Any social clubs are allowed among Servants, provided they have a clear purpose that does not greatly interfere with the peace of the apartment complex. So despite all appearances to the contrary, Master must not consider them to be a threat to our harmony. Though I have no idea why."
"I would suggest," Scathach offered calmly from her seat, "that Master does not consider them a threat because if they attempt to change that, he already has a way of preventing that change."
Euryale scoffed. "Who could possibly be a threat to us?"
"As you are a three-star Archer goddess? Perhaps a five-star Lancer with an Anti-Divine specialty."
"Or two such Lancers," Enkidu added from their spot near the wall.
Euryale paled slightly.
"Maybe we should start our own little club," Enkidu continued.
"Perhaps we already have," Scathach offered. "And perhaps Master would not have approved, except that he needed a way to effectively counter your organization. So thank you very much for plotting as you do. It has only been to our benefit."
Mash did not sleep. And yet, the sensation she got the following morning, when she heard a certain song blaring over every radio and speaker in the apartment complex, was that it had loudly, and rudely, woken her up. Or that was she was still trapped in a particularly difficult to escape nightmare.
"The goddesses thought they had won, the world was in their hands
But then six pillars rose from the dark, towering over the lands!
Not heroes nor champions, but six incredible dudes
Who right the wrongs with nothing but their amazing attitudes!
Now listen while we do roll call, of the coolest ever group!
Our tune will leave you wanting more of our mighty, mighty troop!
Scary Scathach strikes all the foes with scarlet spears aplenty!
Enchanting Enkidu drops a wink, and drives them all plain menty!
Bodacious Bradamante rocks the rear, with the best ever butt shots!
Awesome Artie annihilates, Altering the land a lots!
Courageous Cu faces certain deaths, casting aside all fears!
And me, Electric Elly B, the idol of all years!
We heard our complex was in need, and we're here to save the day!
We won't let those boring, divine duds leave you all in dismay!
So raise your head, and scream out loud, and dry all your tears!
And give your vote to my buds and me, The Six Unholy Spears!"
Mash had heard the song four times before breakfast, by which point it had lost any appeal it had previously. Not that there had been much to start with. And from some of the expressions she saw as the song continued to blare over the speakers, most Servants had also tired of it.
Though she noticed several of the younger Servants bopping their heads and humming, unfortunately.
Shirou joined her a few minutes later, wearing a pair of green, fluffy earmuffs. He offered her a blue pair, and held up a notepad that they could communicate with for the duration.
"How long is this going to last?" Mash demanded, underlining it several times.
"I saw MHXX installing a new speaker onto Mark II's back, so I don't think we can count on them to stop this. But, you have to admit that as a counter to Heavenly Hosting, the Unholy Spears are very effective in principle."
"Maybe," Mash admitted reluctantly. "But where Heavenly Hosting was sapping our energy directly, it seems like the Unholy Spears have chosen a less direct, but far more invasive method."
"You could try asking them to tone things down. Enkidu has always been helpful any time I needed to reign Ishtar in. As they and Scathach are the ringleaders, I don't think you'll meet too much resistance."
"If you're so sure, then why haven't you tried that yet?" Mash asked.
Shirou looked embarrassed. "I did. But Bradamante sensed what I was up to and scared me off."
"Since when have you been afraid of her?"
"Since that song has permanently put her in a bad mood. Apparently, she's not too happy about people staring at her butt, which happens a lot more since the song came out, and clearly Elly knew that when she wrote the song."
"And yet Bradamante is still in the group? Why?"
"There are other Lancers that could fill her spot, but they wouldn't be as powerful. And whatever else the group is, they do currently represent some of the strongest we have. If Bradamante were to step away, we'd be right back to the original problem of needing a strong enough counter to Heavenly Hosting."
Mash scowled. "So you're saying we have to keep putting up with this?"
"You were pretty clear that you don't trust the goddesses. If this group's only crime is that they're annoying, isn't that less harmful?"
Mash glared at him. "You aren't saying that because you're also a fan of those butt shots, are you?"
Shirou blushed, paused, and then smirked. "And if I am? I don't see why that should be a problem for you."
"True enough," Mash agreed. "You are free to look. And I am free to think less of you for looking. Also to inform Bradamante that you are looking."
"Maybe you should do exactly that," Shirou invited.
Mash was not sure how to take that.
She had much the same reaction the following day, when she learned that Shirou and Bradamante, for reasons known only to them, were now dating.
Next Chapter: A Shot of Divinity
Babe the Blue Ox "accidentally" gets a shot intended for another, and develops a horrible case of frequently obliterating the surrounding area via sneezes.
Endnotes:
Had some time on my hands, and next thing I know, I completed Camelot... but I suspect I'll be in Babylonia for a bit. Only recently decided to level more Servants past 90. No 100s yet, but I bet one (or both) of my Gils will get there first.
I adore Bradamante and she has been a huge help to me, but (pun intended) I do wonder whose idea that camera angle was... guessing it was someone who could not lie.
