The Acting Chair Demon
"The Chair-Demon was taken in by Demon Border Control?" Kalego asked, disbelieving.
"Yes. We heard from the Chair-Demon himself." Momonoki stated.
"What did he say?" Blushenko asked.
"Well…uh…"
Kalego felt his heart sink as he found out that Sullivan not only expected to be gone for a while but had left him in charge in the old demons place.
'Damn it! That Asinine Chair Demon! He knows we're all busy with the battler party!' Kalego bared his teeth in frustration at Sullivan. How was he supposed to properly run the whole school and guard it adequately at the same time? That was a near impossible task at a normal time, but during the Battler Party?
He was going to have words for the old fool when he got back. At this point, he'd be lucky if he wasn't thrown into a wicked phase by the time this was all over.
At least it'd be hard to find something to stress him out more at the moment.
"Wow, that's great Kalego!" Cue the hyper active newbie, Robin, leaning into his personal space. Right, so it could be worse. "You're the natural choice but what horrible things are they even accusing the chair demon of doing?"
"Yis! Yis!" Stolas interjected "This must be some type of horrible mistake!"
"That's what I'm saying!" Robin replied. "They've got it wrong. The DBC did some half assed investigation and took him on false charges, right?"
But Kalego knew far better than most how the Border patrol operated. While it was the first born's of his clan that were expected to join Border Patrol, it wasn't uncommon for the second born to be shoved into the position if something happened to the elder before they came of age.
As such, until his brother, Narnia, had been assured his station, Kalego had been forced to learn about the operations of both the schools…mainly Babyls once his clan selected the school like his uncle… and Border Patrol. Their family could often be targeted by enemies to 'pick off problems early.' If something happened to Narnia before he was old enough, he might have been shifted into the other's position. Thus, he was given basic knowledge for how the Border Patrol worked, so that the family wouldn't have to start from scratch in such a situation.
The sobering thought allowed Kalego to reigned in his temper at Robins behavior and invasion of his space, "I highly doubt that."
"Hmmm?" Robin, probably hoping for further reassurance, seemed startled.
Kalego continued, "If they're holding one of the three greats, Chair Demon Sullivan, then I'm certain they must have a valid reason."
This shouldn't have been that shocking. They all knew Sullivan had a … spontaneity… that could easily lead to him doing something stupid. He demonstrated that all the time! And with his power, a careless act could be downright dangerous. Most of the staff were more terrified when he was serious but that was honestly when Kalego was at his least concerned. They worked in a school full of children, it blew his mind that any of the others didn't acknowledge the dangers of impulsiveness on any level, let alone one of the top three most powerful demons in the known world.
"They have a valid reason," Blushenko, one of the other teachers who did understand this, agreed. "But not enough proof to arrest him. Is that what you mean?"
The others listened, worried.
'But if there's no real evidence, why'd they make a point of detaining him right now?'
As Robin entered Kalego's personal bubble again, he raised his hand in time to keep the youngster from getting too close…barely.
"Oh Kalego!" he called even as held him at bay, "I mean, acting chair demon, what could this pos…"
Kalego didn't let the childish demon get further before shoving him away, tuning out his yell. 'Something's not right,' he thought, returning to his musings as he stared down at the Battler Party fliers. He didn't like it, the timing falling on right when everyone would be at their most busy…their most distracted.
And now, when Kalego would be most needed in the duty he was bred for, he'd be tied up with the duties of a Chair Demon. "Hmph."
"What are you thinking?" Momonoki asked.
Rather than express his thoughts, Kalego chose to jump straight into his new duties with his first orders. "As for what happens now, we must brace for the worst. Especially you teachers. Remember to keep your guard up at the battler party."
"Yes sir," everyone replied in synch, with the exception of the trembling Robin. Although Kalego suspected it was from finally trying to control himself in his excitement, pathetic as the attempt might be, rather than out of any fear. Still, Kalego would consider that progress for him.
Or not… here he comes again…
"You feeling the pressure acting chair demon? Come on, be honest?"
How was Robin getting a hand shoved in his face to keep him away twice not enough of a clue for him? Or Kalego's growls as his patience was now reaching it's absolute limits…surely he wasn't deaf.
"You won't have to worry about a thing, acting chair demon, I got you!"
"Call me that again and I'll throat punch you!" Kalego roared.
"Okay, acting chair demon!"
To be fair about what happened next, Kalego had given plenty of warning…
I know that it's been a while since I've posted anything. I had something happen a couple years ago and although I've written partial pieces since, I haven't felt like anything was worth posting. I still don't but at this point, I think that if I don't actually start putting stuff out, I'll feel that way about everything.
So, I'm starting with small one shot pieces like this and hopefully will be able to get back into the habit of actually posting stuff. Once again, I am the only one to look this over but I'm afraid that if I don't post this now, I'll lose my nerve.
If all goes well, this is the start of that process.
