Spencer is ready in her suit; a few feet away and around the corner, she can hear Wanda and Pietro shuffling about and getting ready, too. Spencer's quiet as she stares out towards the city, and she briefly wonders what her father is doing right now. Her stomach is doing flip flops and her body feels fatigued, it was strange. The young assassin wasn't sure what tomorrow would bring if her whole team would fail to stop Ultron; she shook the thoughts away as she heard the familiar sound of an animal racing through rooms to get to her.
She smiled briefly; she heard Tony call after Cooper, but Cooper paid no mind to the man and sniffed out Spencer. It didn't take long as Spencer turned around to welcome her beloved canine into her waiting arms.
Cooper floundered about excitedly and gave her kisses on her neck as Spencer hugged him against her chest. Her heart constricts and she wonders darkly what would happen to Cooper if the Avenger's were to fail their mission. Spencer coos at Cooper and the beautiful wolf-dog soaks up the attention, even for a minute.
Spencer gets up, double-checks her weapons and ammo, before she and Cooper trot up to where everyone else is at. She briefly sees Pietro throw something at Wanda-a faded red leather jacket. Spencer gives a small smile as Wanda glares at Pietro as Spencer fully passes by, Pietro stares at the young woman and the large canine following behind her.
"Why don't you just confess your undying love for her already," Wanda murmurs putting on the leather jacket and smirks when Pietro glares at her, "You don't fool me, brother," Wanda says softly, "And you don't fool anyone else."
"I'm neither trying to hide or show it," Pietro responds thickly.
"You care for her," Wanda murmurs knowingly.
"So do you," Pietro shots back.
"Of course I do," Wanda rolls her eyes, "Our fates are connected because of what we went through together."
Pietro huffs, "I don't want to talk about this, we might die today."
"Perhaps," Wanda says sadly.
Spencer plops down in the Quinjet with a moody look on her face. Clint has a matching expression on his face as he plops right down next to her. They look at each other, "You feel the same way, kid?" Clint asked in a grave voice.
"Yeah," Spencer says, "I tried calling my dad but God knows where he is." She mutters looking upset.
Clint pats the top of her head, "At least your backup dad is here with you." He tries to brighten her mood.
Spencer smiles softly, "I guess that's alright."
Clint pinches her arm and Spencer laughs, "You're a brat, you know that?" Clint mutters with his arms crossed over his chest. Everyone is gathered in the Quinjet as Steve begins to explain our gameplan.
"Ultron knows we're coming," Steve says in that voice that just soothes Spencer, "Odds are we'll be riding into heavy fire, and that's what we signed up for," Steve looks at Pietro and Wanda, "But the people of Sokovia, they didn't. So our priority is getting them out."
"All they want is to live their lives in peace, and that's not going to happen today. But we can do our best to protect them. And we can get the job done, and find out what Ultron's been building. We find Romanoff, and we clear the field. Keep the fight between us. Ultron thinks we're monsters and we're what's wrong with the world. This isn't just about beating him. It's about whether he's right."
Spencer looks up to gaze at her team, no, her family. She couldn't describe the eerie feeling that was bubbling in her stomach, but she hoped it wasn't a bad omen.
Spencer knew it was only a short matter of time before shit hit the fan in the city; She was left in charge of her section near the main bridge out of the city. Spencer's mind focused but the eerie feeling in her stomach wouldn't vanish. There were so many people in the city, how were they meant to get them all out before the fight happened?
Ultron could decide to unleash hell now and destroy these innocent people. Spencer exhaled deeply trying to calm her mind as she directed people into the direction of the main bridge where Steve was.
It had only been about an hour since they landed and the evacuations started, everything had been going smoothly, and suddenly chaos erupted from underneath their own feet. Screaming and yelling erupted as Ultron's minions began to crawl up from underneath the ground, Spencer began to quickly eliminate any within her sight before jumping onto the roof's a building and attempting to throw her biggest energy shield over the last crowds of her section.
But her plan was for naught when suddenly, the earth started rumbling.
"Stay inside the bubble!" Spencer shouted to the mass of hysterical and panicked people. She threw another energy shield at another large group of people as the shaking of the earth increased. In the distance, Spencer could hear the sound of crashing and rumbling."I'm going to assume we're going for a ride." Spencer huffed rubbing her temples; a part of her wanting to give up.
Suddenly Ultron's voice shifts through the chaos, "Do you see? The beauty of it, the inevitability. You rise, only to fall. You, Avengers, you are my meteor, my swift and terrible sword and the earth will crack with the weight of your failure. Purge me from your computers, turn my flesh against me. It means nothing. When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world will be metal."
"What a fucking dick," Spencer grunted, "I'm tired of his stupid voice."
She was trying to do her best to protect the civilians by shielding them and also tear apart Ultron's minions, but they lost interest as soon as they realized they couldn't get through Spencer's energy shield.
They were made of energy and as soon as they touched Spencer's shield, that energy would only strengthen her shields and suck the life out of the enemy, and they couldn't even reach Spencer since she was inside a small shield of her own.
For the moment being, her crowds were safe to continue migrating towards the main bridge.
Suddenly Tony's voice comes through the com, "Cap, you got incoming."
"Incoming already came in," Steve sounded annoyed before telling Tony, "Stark, you worry about bringing the city back down safely. The rest of us have one job: tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed, walk it off."
"That doesn't make sense," Spencer muttered into the com.
"Spence, not now." Steve groaned.
"Where am I herding my people?" Spencer demanded flinching as a four-story building crashed over one of her groups but her shield kept them safe.
"Towards the main bridge," Steve said sounding breathless, "Get them into the main buildings!"
"Got it!"
"Let's go, people!" Spencer shouted slowly guiding her herds through the chaos, "Towards the main bridge!" Spencer was beginning to feel a strain on her body, keeping this many energy shields and such large ones were beginning to take a toll on her body. She gritted her teeth, "Toughen up, bitch, we got people to save!" Spencer spat at herself trying to shake off the feeling of fatigue, "I've been through much worse, what am I soft?!" She scoffed.
Spencer tried her best to expand her shields to accommodate new people but the bigger the shields, the more she spread herself thin. Luckily, after what felt like an eternity, Spencer managed to herd her crowds of people towards the main bridge and get them safely tucked into the main, large buildings while the main police force held a front line and in the middle where the rest of her team.
"Anyone miss me?" Spencer breathed finally dropping her five, large energy shields after almost twenty minutes. She bent over with her hands on her knees trying to regain some energy, "Anyone have an energy bar or something?" Spencer asked meekly.
"Spencer, I need you to throw up some shields," Steve told her.
Spencer groaned loudly, "I just fucking got here!"
"You sure are whiney today." Nat's voice sounded through the com.
"Glad you're safe," Spencer muttered as Spencer used her hover-board to fly on top of the main building where most of the population was hiding in, "I'm spreading myself pretty thin right now," Spencer told her team honestly, "I'm not sure how long I can keep this shield up, especially one this big."
"Do your best," Clint told her, "Anything will happen for whatever time."
"We'll keep the area covered," Steve reassured Spencer.
Spencer widened her stance, cracked her neck, and extended a large energy shield. The energy inside of her body protested and she winced as she felt her very own veins a bright blue energy shield covered the main area near the bridge, holding tall and steady.
It was only a few minutes later that the first wave of intense fighting slowed down. Spencer was beginning to sweat now, her body shaking under the strain of keeping such a massive shield up. "How are you holding up, Spencer?" Steve asked.
"I need an energy bar," Spencer wheezed.
Back on the ground, Steve and Nat were finishing up the last of Ultron's minions when they heard Spencer's strained wheezed through the com. Nat looked at Steve with worry, "She can't keep the shield up for much longer, Steve."\
Steve rubbed his temples, "I know," He knew he was pushing Spencer to her limit but what other choice did he have? "The next wave's gonna hit any minute. What have you got, Stark?" Steve demanded into his com.
Tony instantly replied, "Well, nothing great. Maybe a way to blow up the city. That'll keep it from impacting the surface if you guys can get clear."
"I asked for a solution, not an escape plan," Steve hissed, "Spencer can't keep up her shield for much longer."
Tony responded quietly, "Impact radius is getting bigger every second. We're going to have to make a choice."
"Cap, these people are going nowhere. If Stark finds a way to blow this rock…" Nat told him with a slight frown.
"Not til' everyone is safe," Steve answered stubbornly.
Nat glared at Steve, "Everyone up here versus everyone down there? There's no math there."
"I'm not leaving this rock with one civilian on it," Steve told her with finality.
Nat smirked, "I didn't say we should leave," Steve turns towards Nat, "There are worse ways to go," Nat shrugged with a chuckle, "Where else am I going to get a view like this?" Nat gestured to the clouds that the city was now starting to fly over.
"Nice to know that my goddaughter is busting her ass while you two are looking at the view," Nick Fury's voice sounded through the coms.
Spencer almost shouted in joy and dropped to her knees at the sound of her Godfather's voice, "Oh, thank God!" Spencer cried out in relief as the sight of the Helicarrier.
"Fury, you son of a bitch." Steve said in awe.
"Oooh! You kiss your mother with that mouth?" Nick chuckled.
"I'm not gonna last much longer, guys!" Spencer cried out.
"Drop your shield, Spencer! Rest as quickly as you can." Steve told her.
Spencer gasped and dropped onto the rooftop; her body shaking from the strain it was taking to hold up that massive shield. She had her ears ringing and her heart was hammering in her chest, but at least they had a backup and for a way to get these innocent people off this damn rock. Spencer could vaguely hear her team shouting through the coms as she managed to get herself onto her hoverboard and drop down into the main plaza.
Steve, who had seen her coming, went towards her immediately.
His concern for the young woman increased when he saw how pale and sweaty Spencer was, "Spencer," Steve murmured in shock, "You need to get to the Helicarrier," He told her firmly, "You can't fight anymore."
Spencer huffed leaning against him as her hoverboard went into wristband form, "I need," Huff, "Some water and maybe a muffin," Huff, "And I'll be good as new."
"You look like shit," Nat observed coming over with a candy bar in one hand and a dirty bottle of water in the other, "Here, it's not much." Steve and Nat watched as Spencer shoved the candy bar into her mouth and chugged the water down in less than five seconds.
"I can throw another shield up to protect-"
"No," Steve and Nat said at the same time, "Conserve your energy right now, no more shields," Steve ordered her.
Spencer huffed but nodded.
Unfortunately, it wasn't even five minutes later that Tony chirped excitedly, "Thor, I got a plan!"
"We're out of time!" Thor grunted through the com, "They're coming for the core!"
"Fucking bitch," Spencer muttered rubbing her forehead, "That means fighting."
"Rhodey, get the rest of the people onto the helicarrier," Tony ordered.
"On it!" Rhodey said.
"Avengers, time to work for a living."
"Steve, go ahead," Nat grabbed Spencer's hand and dragged the recovering woman into a large truck, "Spencer needs as much rest as possible right now."
Steve nods and gives Spencer a worried look, "Spence…"
"I'm not backing out," Spencer said with a glare, "I'm not backing out unless I'm dead, so, stop worrying about me!"
Steve flinched at the harshness of her voice but nodded. He felt a bit hurt but he understood her grumpiness. Steve ran off quickly as Nat began plowing through the street to get to the church. "You hurt his feelings, ya know."
"Bugger off, Nat," Spencer muttered tiredly.
"Now, you hurt my feelings, you're on a roll today, aren't you? Should I get a speedy boy to give you a kiss to cheer you up?" Nat smirked.
Spencer gaped at her comrade and blushed wildly, "Shut up!" Spencer hissed, "Are coms are fucking on!" It was official, Spencer was going to die today from embarrassment.
Nat snickered, "Relax, mine was off."
"Jerk!" Spencer accused her with a cry.
"Romanoff?" Tony sang her name, "You and Banner better not be playing "hide the zucchini."!"
"That's disgusting, seriously? She's with me!" Spencer cried out before fake gagging.
"Relax, Shell-head. Not all of us can fly." Nat snickered as Nat crashed and parked the truck near the church. "So, what's the drill?" Spencer flexed her arms before taking out her dual katanas; she couldn't use much of her energy or else she would risk the chance of passing out or worse.
Tony points to the Vibranium core behind them, "This is the drill. If Ultron gets a hand on the core, we lose."
"Sounds easy enough," Spencer muttered to herself as Hulk crashes in and joins the team. "Hey, buddy." Spencer pats Hulk on the arm as Pietro and Wanda look at her as if she was crazy.
Hulk grunted at her and used his chubby index finger to pat the top of her head.
Spencer beamed.
"Is that the best you could do!?" Thor suddenly shouts.
Spencer sees Ultron outside of the church and horror dawns on her face as Ultron summons the rest of his robot army. "You had to ask," Steve clicks his tongue in annoyance.
"Seriously, way to look dumb, Thor!" Spencer shouted with a glare aimed at the God of Thunder.
"I wasn't thinking!" Thor looked at her with hurt eyes, "I got lost in the moment!"
Spencer shook her head as Ultron mocked them, "This is the best I can do. This is exactly what I wanted. All of you, against all of me. How could you possibly hope to stop me?"
"Well, like the old man said," Tony said from behind them, "Together."
Spencer lied when she said she wasn't risking using any more of her power; as soon as the mass of robots came charging towards them, she rushed forward. "Spencer, no!" Steve shouted. Spencer inhaled and used her body to exert rings of powerful energy in rapid succession, destroying the first waves of robots and then slowing the next waves down. Steve reached for her and yanked her behind the rest of them, "Are you crazy?!"
"You bet your ass I am," Spencer snarled feeling a spike in her adrenaline, "I'll try to keep it up but I won't do it for long!" Spencer told him before taking out her swords and slashing away while pumping out rings of energy at a steady pace. She only had a little gas left in her tank but she was willing to use the rest of it here and now if it meant ending this horrendous ordeal.
Her body was gliding and moving like liquid as she hacked away at Ultron's minions with ease, her blades slicing through their metallic flesh easily since she applied a thin layer of her energy. The more bodies she slashed, the thicker the layer of energy got and the more powerful it became. Ultron roared as he charged into the fray but Vision was quick to greet Ultron. They fought above in the air as the rest of the team focused on the robots.
Ultron was flung out by Vision using the Infinity Stone; Thor and Tony quickly followed.
Suddenly, the remaining robots are retreating and Spencer could only assume that Ultron had been defeated. "We gotta move out. Even I can tell the air is getting thin," Steve turned to Spencer, Nat, and Clint, "You guys get to the boats, I'll sweep for stragglers, be right behind you."
"What about the core?" Clint asked.
"I'll protect it," Wanda said confidently.
Spencer looked at Wanda surprised.
Wanda smirked, "It's my job."
"We deserve a raise," Spencer laughed as Nat hauled her ass away with Clint. Pietro sped by, briefly glancing at Spencer, before turning his attention onto Wanda.
"Hop in," Clint gestured to the black convertible, "Seat-belts!"
Spencer plopped in the backseat, "Hand me the aux cord, old man?" Spencer teased as Nat got in and Clint sped away.
"Your taste in music is horrendous, no." Clint snorted.
"You're being rude," Spencer huffed.
"I know what I need to do. The dining room! If I knock out that east wall, it'll make a nice workspace for Laura, huh? Put up some baffling, she can't hear the kids running around, what do you think?" Clint rambled on as if Spencer hadn't said anything.
"I think I need another horse," Spencer drawls.
"You don't even take care of the one you have!" Clint says loudly getting riled up, "I take care of him!"
"You guys always eat in the kitchen anyway," Nat hummed thoughtfully.
"I pay for all his food and shit, don't I?" Spencer demanded hotly, "I can't exactly find room and board in New York City or Washington D.C!"
"I bet if you asked Tony to build you some stables, he would!" Clint said.
Spencer blinked, "I like that idea," Spencer said excitedly before pressing on her com, "Hey, Tony! Can you build me a stable?!"
"What the hell, Pikachu," Tony said, weirded out by the sudden question, "I'm trying to focus!"
"Is that a yes?" Spencer sang.
"If it gets you to shut up, yes!" Tony snapped.
Spencer turned off her com and laughed, "Haha, he's gonna do it."
"What a brat," Nat mused as they reached the lifeboats, "We don't have a lot of time," Nat looks behind Clint. Spencer cranes her neck and sees Hulk moping about.
"Better hurry that ass up then," Spencer snorts as Nat jumps out of the car and heads over to Hulk. Clint and Spencer jog up to the lifeboat; Clint looks out towards the plaza to see if there are any stragglers behind that need help. A mother is screeching for her missing boy and suddenly Spencer feels as if time slows down.
She's seen this before; in her nightmares.
A dark sense of deja-vu consumes her as she watches Clint jog off the lifeboat. She's seen this before and she remembered waking up screaming in horror because of it. She looks up into the sky where a Quinjet is zooming right towards the plaza; No, Spencer realized in horror, NO! Her eyes zoom in towards Clint, who is jogging towards a stairwell where a child is hiding.
Spencer throws out her hoverboard as tears fall from her eyes; Clint turns around with the child in his arms and sees the storm of bullets heading his way. Spencer has tunnel vision as she watches Pietro fly forward.
But Spencer's there.
She lets out a cry as she throws herself in front of Pietro and throws up an energy shield; with all the strength left in her body, she barely manages to throw it up, barely manages to save Pietro's life as Pietro throws a car to protect Clint and the boy.
Pietro watches in horror as Spencer suddenly appears in front of him, throwing out a bright blue shield of energy to shield them and he watches in horror as one bullet manages to pierce the shield and strike Spencer in the chest.
He screams her name and catches her as she falls.
Her name falls from his lips as he applies pressure on her chest to stop the bleeding. "Pietro?" Clint sees him and Clint's eyes find Spencer in his arms, a red flower blossoming from her chest, Pietro's crying, Clint drops the boy safely on the floor as he struggles to comprehend what happened, what Spencer did.
"Spencer? Spencer!" Steve is charging at them in a panic.
"She's barely breathing!" Pietro yells in a panic, his heartbreaking.
"Get her to the lifeboat, now!" Steve shouts.
Pietro picks Spencer's limp body in his arms and flies to the nearest lifeboat.
"Rhodey, we need you right now! Spencer's been hit! Pietro is taking her to the last lifeboat, you need to get her!" Steve is shouting into the com.
"Don't die on me, princezná," Pietro said to her with tears running down his dirtied face, "Please, don't die."
*giggles maniacally* What a way to suddenly return, ehh? Sorry for any errors, I never proof-read. I may or may not be back, don't get your hopes up, lmao. Man, have I missed writing this fic. Sorry, if it's awkward and choppy, it's been a few years since I've typed a story lmao.
