Hi! Welcome to the third chapter of my story. I'm sorry this took so long, there was a combo of life stuff and lack of motivation getting in my path. Nonetheless, it's finally here and that's all that matters. Onto the reviews...
Explorer of the unknown: Oh boy, I certainly hope I don't end up bastardizing any characters like that...
The Riverian: Yep. A quite a bit late, I know. Interesting thoughts btw, I won't say what I'm planning to do with Dakota or anyone, but I can say with confidence it won't be just an exact replica of the Canon seasons.
Tjm: Thank you. There just wasn't much to do with her anyway, at least not with a cast and show of this magnitude.
Jp721: Thanks, I'm glad you're excited to see how it all plays out with the couples.
This time, our campers will be taking on the bike challenge from episode 18 of the Canon show (with a number of changes). Start your engines…
Remaining campers
Killer Bass: Courtney, Noah, Sadie, Dakota, Sam, Scott, Dave, Sugar, Emma, Bowie, Raj
Screaming Gophers: Leshawna, Owen, Trent, Brick, Ella, Jasmine, Rodney, Axel, Lauren, Zee
Elimination order
22nd: Anne Maria
Episode 3: That's Off the Chain!
The camera footage opened up to a distanced view of the island as Chris spoke.
"Last time on Total Drama Island, twenty-two campers arrived and learned that they'll be spending the next eight weeks at a crusty, old summer camp. For their first challenge, the campers were made to suffer all manner of abuse in the 'no pain, no game' challenge. In an act of chivalry… or insanity, Lauren stepped up to save Anne Maria from the perils of the leech barrel, and, in a death display of log-rolling, Bowie took out a grizzly bear, securing invincibility for the Killer Bass."
"At the campfire ceremony it all came down to two campers. Axel has over-the-top survival skills, but her abrasive nature got on the nerves of some of the Gophers, and Anne Maria refused to help her team in the challenge, twice. In the end, the first camper voted off Total Drama Island… was Anne Maria… proving that hairstyling and reality TV don't really mix."
"Who will be voted off in the most dramatic campfire ceremony yet? Find out tonight, on…
Total…
Drama…
Island!"
[Cue the intro]
Several cameras were seen popping out of trees and the ground throughout the island. A clapboard popped up and the view then cut to show the front of the dock, where the camera swiftly flew toward the middle of the island, passing the Camp Wawanakwa sign, the two cabins, the restrooms, and Chris sitting in a directors chair drinking coffee.
The camera cruised through the woods before emerging out at the island's highest cliff and plummeting to the waters below where a circle of buoys rested. Underwater, Owen put his arms and legs out and let out a fart, pushing him to the left. The fart flew into a fish, causing it to choke. The camera then rose back above the lake to show Sam and Dakota on a canoe, both occupied with a handheld console and phone respectively. Green bubbles came out of the water and got in their faces, causing them to flinch. The shot ended with a dead fish floating on the surface as an eagle swooped down, picked it up and carried it away.
The scene transitioned to show Trent sitting on a log in the middle of the woods, playing his guitar. Next to him was Ella watching in awe with a few birds fluttering beside her. A second later, the fish from the prior scene fell in front of Trent's feet, scaring him and Ella, and causing the birds to fly away in panic. The camera then zoomed out to show Sugar pointing a finger their way, laughing, and Jasmine next to her, rolling her eyes.
The camera then zoomed in through the trees and entered a clearing, where a waterfall overlooked a vast area of even more forestry. On said waterfall, a raft containing Bowie, looking nervous, and Raj, looking excited, dropped off the edge, sending them falling. The camera cut to show the front of the waterfall, where a log was perched over two sets of rocks. Standing on said log were Brick and Axel, who were both performing pushups as Bowie, Raj, and the raft plummeted below in the background.
Another camera shift took the scene to just outside the outhouse, where Leshawna was about to enter until Scott exited with a carving tool in one hand, and a wooden replica of his face in the other. He held it up and smirked, making Leshawna roll her eyes and look away, as the view panned to the left and zoomed in on the silhouette of Chef through the window of the mess hall. Inside, Chef was seen stirring a pot of green liquid with his arm, before looking over at Noah and Dave, who were tied up next to the table with looks of dread. On the left of them, Zee gulped down a can of soda and let out a lengthy burp, shocking Sadie right next to him.
The view left the mess hall and zoomed out to show Rodney sitting on the wooden staircase leading to the beach, where he stared out toward the water with dreamy eyes. Another camera movement to the right revealed that he was looking at Anne Maria, who was spraying her hair with an annoyed look. A second later, the spray stopped coming out, indicating an empty can. Anne Maria growled and threw the can to the right, where the camera followed it carefully. A seagull who was just floating on the water got hit by the spray can, knocking it out of view.
A hand suddenly grabbed the camera and pulled it even further right to where the dock of shame sat, revealing that it was Dakota. She blew the camera a kiss and stepped back, pulling out a cell phone. A second later, she put it away and several camera men entered the scene and began taking pictures of her while she made numerous poses. The camera then rose up to a direct view of the sky, before it abruptly changed to nighttime.
The camera fell back down to a view of the campfire ceremony area, where Courtney and Emma pointed fingers at each other and kept bickering from their log seats until Scary Girl jumped out in the middle with her hands up and a wide grin. The two screamed briefly as the camera zoomed out to show the other nineteen campers sitting around the bonfire, whistling the end of the theme song as the camera cut out.
[Intro end]
The footage opened up at the same time that it left off last episode. The sky was dark, the moon hardly visible amidst the clouds covering it, and from the tall, silent trees, the atmosphere seemed eerie and quiet… until the camera shifted down from to ground level, where an army of snapping turtles, roughly ten, seemed to be walking toward something. The camera zoomed out to reveal the panicked looks of Trent and Zee, the former of whom shook a turtle off his leg, the latter still struggling with a raccoon biting his hat. That was, until a third voice came onto the scene.
"Stay away from them!" Shouted Jasmine, who jumped out from the bushes and kicked one of the many snappers off into the bushes. She then grabbed another one and threw it at the raccoon, knocking it off of Zee's hat. This display triggered immediate fear in the surrounding creatures, all of them letting out a screech and walking away from the attacker as fast as their legs could carry them.
The boys, now sitting on the ground trying to process the attack, looked up in surprise. Jasmine smiled and extended a hand to Trent.
"Are you okay, mate?"
The fallen camper took his teammates offering hand, getting back on his feet. Jasmine then walked over a couple of steps and helped Zee get up.
"What are you boys doing out here?" she asked worriedly. "It's not safe to be out and about in the dark."
Trent was confused. "I could ask you the same thing. Why do you sleep out here at night?"
Just as Jasmine began to reply, someone ran toward the trio and stopped abruptly, sighing in relief as soon as they saw what was in front of them.
"Oh, thank goodness you three are okay. If only I'd been here sooner or left the turtles at the challenge I-"
It was Ella. She paused and put the back of her hand to her forehead, clearly distressed.
"Hey, don't worry about it. The animals are gone now." Jasmine told the Princess.
"Yeah, no need to fret, they might come back soon." Zee smiled as he spoke, putting his hands on his hat. "That head scratch felt good yo."
Trent and Jasmine looked at each other in confusion. The former shrugged and turned his attention to Ella. "Hey, if anything, I should be thanking you. If you didn't carry those turtles away from the stage, who knows what more Chris or Chef would've done with them?"
Ella calmed down and took a deep breath. "I… guess you're right. It's just that I feel so bad for these poor animals. No one deserves to be treated like a hockey puck."
"Yeah, I get what you're saying. That must explain why they were so aggressive." responded Trent, putting a hand on the back of his neck. "I know if I were one of those little ones, I'd never trust a human again. And to think Chris seemed like a nice guy…"
Jasmine sighed and stepped in front of the two. "I didn't want to change the subject so quickly, but since you're out here, I guess it's best that I explain why I don't sleep in the cabins."
Trent, Ella, and Zee all turned to face her, the latter two confused.
"Wait… you haven't slept with us this whole time?" asked Zee, his tone becoming more exaggerated as he went on.
The Australian girl nodded and spoke. "No… it's just that," she paused briefly and sighed, "I'm claustrophobic. The bunk beds are too small that I almost have to crouch, so I prefer to sleep out here."
"But you know how dangerous it is right?" questioned Trent with a look of concern.
"I do." replied Jasmine subtly as she smiled. "And I'm comfortable with it. As an outdoors person, the trees are sort of... well, a safe haven to me."
Just as she finished, a bush behind the group of four rustled loudly, earning their attention. When they all faced it, a shadow jumped out and struck a pose with their arms in the air and hands spread out as if to seem menacing. There was no shadow though.
"SURPRISE! RAWR, RAWR!" yelled Lauren, eyes wide and teeth showing.
Zee jumped and fled the group, screaming as he ran back toward the cabins. "Wahahah! A scary girl! Runnnnnnnn!"
The other three just looked at the girl in shock as she slowly fell back into the bush she was hiding in.
"Well, um." Trent spoke as he rubbed his neck. "I guess the last few people in line saw me go into the woods and followed us."
"Better be more cautious next time, mate." Jasmine told him, putting a finger up. "This isn't something I'm comfortable talking about." she slumped over and yawned. "And let me tell you, that part is an even longer story."
Ella yawned. "Well, it's getting late, so me and Trent should be heading back."
Trent nodded in agreement. "Yeah, and thanks for saving me and Zee from the animals. If it weren't for you, then… god."
"Don't worry about it." Jasmine replied gleefully. "Now you both take care."
Trent and Ella smiled back as the camera cut to static.
[Confessional: A raccoon?]
Squeaking sounds could be heard as a raccoon stood on it's hind legs, looked up at the camera, put out it's front hands as if to scare anyone watching, and smiled.
[Confessional end]
The scene cut to show a full moon occupying space. The dark blue sky brightened to a light orange shade as the moon ventured out of view to the right and the sun rose.
The loudspeaker emitted a horn before a familiar voice rang out from it.
"Morning campers. Your next challenge awaits you at the arts and crafts center." announced the voice of Chris.
A camera flash cut to Brick jumping off the upper half of a bunk bed, shared with Zee, who remained asleep. After landing on both feet, the soldier grinned and turned to face his bunkmate.
"Rise and shine, soldier! We've got a challenge today."
Zee opened his eyes and groaned as he slowly lifted his body off the bed. "But du-ude…" he stuttered, "It's like.. Chris-o'-clock."
Brick lifted his brow in confusion as he lent a hand and helped his teammate out of bed.
"Well, it's good practice to get up early." commented the soldier. "Plus, uh…" he paused, putting a hand to the back of his head, "I just had a question for you."
"Huh? What is it?" asked Zee, rubbing his eyes.
"The other night, I noticed something off. A number of us were missing when we got back to the cabins." As Brick explained his recollection of events from that night, the scene flashed back to show only five Gophers approaching the cabin stairs: Axel, Leshawna, Owen, Rodney, and Brick himself. The latter looked away from the guys entrance to only see the Killer Bass partying in their hot tub.
The scene flashed back to the present.
"That included you. Is there a reason why you or other members were so late?"
Zee put a finger up to his chin in thought. "Ummmm, well… I don't know how to put it into words, um…"
Trent, who had just woken up beside them, noticed his teammate struggling to respond to Brick's concern and sprang out of his bed, stepping between the boys.
"Guys, sorry to butt in, but Chris needs us outside ASAP." Trent told them, putting a finger up and diverting the topic.
Brick glanced at his watch. "Ah, you're right. I guess we'd better head out. We'll pick this up later."
Zee sighed in relief.
[Confessional: Trent]
"I personally wouldn't have minded telling the rest of our team about what happened that night, but Jasmine wants to keep it between the four…" he paused and looked up in thought, "er, five of us. Either way, we have to be careful and act like it was nothing. I don't want everyone panicking over feral animals." he sighed, bringing his arms to his knees. "Oh boy."
[Confessional end]
Another flash took the scene to Chris walking in front of a pale brown shed with an orange roof. Next to it stood a red ATV.
"Welcome to the arts and crafts center!" he introduced.
All twenty-one campers stood to the left of him, Gophers grouped together on the far left and Bass on the right. Everyone showed emotions varying from boredom to curiosity.
"More like the farts and craps center." Scott sarcastically remarked.
Owen giggled at this. "Hahaha, farts." he responded. As if on cue, the big guy let out a small fart, incentivising Axel and Brick beside him to give a dirty look and swat the stench away.
Chris continued, responding to Scott's comment. "Yeah, it used to be an outhouse, but now it's where Chef parks his…" he paused, turned to the shed door, and opened it. Rodney, Scott, Sugar, and Raj were the first to peak inside.
"...roadhog." The host continued, and inside was a maroon 90's motorcycle with fire decor and rusty metal connecting the motors and wheels. "Which brings us to today's challenge: building your own wheels!" he finished with a fitting gesture using both of his hands.
Owen pumped both fists in the air and cheered. "Hot rods! Haha, awesome! Give me fiiiive!" he put out an open hand to Noah. The Killer Bass player rolled his eyes and gently reciprocated the high-five to the Screaming Gopher player.
"You'll find all the parts you need in our bike depot." Chris instructed as the camera panned over to show a small mountain of bike parts and scraps.
"Bicycles…" Owen said cheerfully, putting his hands in the air, "...less awesome, but still good, right?"
Everyone around him either didn't react or looked unamused as Chris continued. "Once you've collected the basics, trick them out any way you want using props from the arts and crafts center."
The Host hopped on the red ATV. "Oh, and one more thing. Since there's too many of you to count, I'll need five volunteers from each team. I'll tell you the details later."
No one raised their hand. Emma, who stood in front of the Killer Bass, gave him a skeptical look before turning to face her team. "Okay Bass, huddle up."
"Nope, no need for discussions," Chris interrupted her, waving his hand, "I just need five of you."
Emma sighed as five people around her raised their hands: Bowie, Courtney, Dakota, Raj, and Sugar. Similarly on the Gopher team, another five people did the same thing: Axel, Brick, Jasmine, Leshawna, and Zee.
"Volunteers, follow me!" Chris ordered the ten campers with their hands up. "Rest of you, stay here and get working on your bikes. Make sure to have exactly five ready per team in three hours from now. Chef will be monitoring, so don't get any ideas about running off. Oh, and to prove I'm a nice guy, here's a couple of bike manuals."
The Host then threw two dusty, old-looking books at Emma and Rodney, who both caught it, before hitting the accelerator on his ATV and speeding off. All ten of his volunteering campers sprinted after him as the remaining eleven teens looked around with varying levels of confusion and curiosity.
Emma, who shook her head, attempted to regain her focus as she turned to face her remaining teammates: Dave, Sadie, Noah, Sam, and Scott. "Uh, anyway, let's get to work, Bass. Chris said we need to make five bikes, so each of you can grab a manual and get started while I will…" she paused and looked to her side, "assist in any way I can. Yeah, that."
Noah looked at her awkwardly and shrugged. "Well, it's not like we'll need assistance. We just have to follow the manuals instructions and.. voila."
The bookworm walked over to the pile of junk as the remaining Bass members followed suit.
"Easy for you to say, shorty." replied Scott sourly. "I've done this before in my dad's garage and I can safely say, I don't need any instructions."
Noah rolled his eyes at Scott's mocking tone as he started grabbing bike parts from the pile. Meanwhile, Emma looked on and sighed.
[Confessional: Emma]
"After I won the last challenge for my team, I thought no one would have a problem with me taking the reins and leading them." vented Emma as she crossed her arms. "Guess this is gonna take more work than I thought."
[Confessional end]
The scene cut to the remaining five Screaming Gophers, all of whom looked over at the pile where the Bass had already started digging: Rodney, Ella, Trent, Owen, and Lauren.
"Woah, they're making quick progress." Rodney commented. "We'd better get moving."
Owen dashed over and grabbed a pair of steering handles from the pile where four Bass members were digging. "Hohohoho, I'm gonna build a dream bike!"
Sadie, standing next to the pile, looked down in a sad mood. "Bike… I've always wished for one, but never got it." she walked away.
"Really?" asked Owen, sounding more upset as he spoke. "Santa never brought you your Christmas wish?"
"That's just so… wrong." Rodney voiced in agreement as he put a hand on Owen's shoulder.
The boys started sniffing and looked like they were about to burst into tears, before Lauren popped out in between them and grabbed each of their shoulders. Both boys gasped in shock as they were thrown to the ground by the unexpected strength of their teammate.
"Woah, Lauren, what are you doing!?" Owen panicked, as did Rodney.
The girl gave Owen a puzzled look.
"I don't know…" she replied coldly with a scowl. "Just trying to help you see the fact that our team is getting distracted."
Owen chuckled nervously. "Oh… right. I guess I'll, um… make sure we focus…" he was at a loss of words as he and Rodney slowly got up. "On having fun! Hahahaha!"
Scary Girl grit her teeth and glared at him, causing the latter to yelp.
"Okay, okay, we'll focus on the challenge. Please stop looking at me like that!" pleaded Owen, putting his hands up high.
"Good." she replied, leaning forward and putting a finger up to Owen's face. "Also, it's Scary Girl, not Lauren. Get your facts straight."
With that, Scary Girl booped her teammate on the nose, turned away from both boys and started digging through the pile, humming as she was occupied. Rodney looked at Ella and Trent in confusion as the latter shrugged.
"That's what she told us back when we were att-" Trent paused, suddenly recalling the incident he was caught up in the other night, "...At the dock yesterday."
Ella pitched in, folding her hands together hesitantly. "Oh, yes. It's very weird though. I don't think Lauren is a bad name at all. Right, boys?"
Rodney nearly flinched upon hearing her last two words as he put on a wide smile and tried to respond. "Oh, yeah… yeah… right, good name…" Ella gave him a worried look as he continued. "...Girls, and um, birds…"
Trent stepped in between the two and pointed a thumb toward the pile of bike scraps. This caused Rodney to snap out of his trance.
"Are you okay, dude?" asked Trent in mild annoyance. "In any case, we've got bikes to build. Mind getting started?"
"Oh, yes, s-sorry!" Rodney stuttered. "Let's do it." The three joined Owen and Scary Girl in searching through the bike parts.
The scene flashed forward to show Scott cautiously taking a peek through the shed entrance at Chef's road hog. He looked away to his left, then to his right, before putting a foot inside. The second he did this however, he regretted it, as Chef, who was shown to be inside hiding on the other side of the door, slammed it shut, causing Scott's foot to be crushed.
"YOW!" Scott yelped in pain. The door almost immediately opened back up and Chef stepped out, arms crossed and glaring at the farm boy, who was trying to stand up on one foot and gripping the other.
"Not happening, boy." Chef told him nonchalantly. "That's my road hog, and mine alone, got that?"
Scott put his injured foot down and nodded, eyes still closed and teeth grit. Chef's calm demeanor took a turn as he put his face in the farmer's and grew angrier as he spoke.
"I said, did you get THAT!?" he barked, pointing his finger in Scott's face and causing hair to flinch.
"Y-yes chef!" responded Scott in a panicked tone, giving the road hog owner a salute.
[Confessional: Scott]
"Well that idea is a bust." Scott commented as he put a hand to the back of his head, clearly annoyed. "I just want to be in control of my team somehow, but I don't really know where to start." He put his other hand to his chin. "Maybe I don't even have to help my team to begin with…" A devilish grin appeared on his face. "Besides, only one person can win the money."
[Confessional end]
The scene showed five of the Bass members busy in front of the cabin in varying ways: Dave sat around some bike helmets, goggles, and other PPE as he struggled to tie knee pads on himself, Emma stood with hands on her hips observing the team, Noah was reading the manual in one hand and held a steering rod in the other, Sadie held a wrench in her hand and looked at two tires, seemingly confused, and Sam was busy attaching his bike's main body to one of the tires.
The camera zoomed in to show the gamer using a brush to clean dust off his bikes front tire. Scott, looking confused, approached him.
"How did you do all this so quickly?" asked the farmer in an aggressive tone, putting his hands on his hips.
Sam turned around and looked at him, clearly confused and off put by Scott's voice.
"Um, is there something I can help you with?" Sam asked him, somewhat annoyed.
Scott put on a worried face and stuttered. "Oh- n-no, that's not what I need. I was.. just uh, impressed by how well you're bike is coming along."
Sam smiled softly. "Oh, I see. Thanks." he finished with a chuckle.
"Yeah, yeah…" the farm boy put a finger to his chin and smiled, "Anyhow, I saw Dave struggling over there, so I just thought it would be nice of you to go help him, you know?" he pointed at Dave, who was continuing to put on his knee pads.
"Sure, but why can't you help too?" Sam asked curiously.
"Well, um…" Scott paused for a second, "Let's just say I have bike experience and I know a way to spice up YOUR bike. So while you do that, I'll finish up yours. Sound fair?" He extended his right hand.
Sam looked at him awkwardly, but accepted the handshake anyway. "Well, alright. Just don't mess anything up." Sam told him before walking over to Dave.
[Confessional: Scott]
"Score!" he shouted, pumping a fist in the air. "Now I can put my plan into action. Just watch and learn…" he chuckled and pulled a small branch out of his back pocket.
[Confessional end]
Scott looked back at his teammate, and seeing as he was distracted, took his branch and snapped it into multiple small chunks, before placing them in the tire's interior and snickering quietly.
The scene cut to Sam approaching Dave.
"Hey there buddy, how's the build going?" asked Sam warmly.
"Well, it could be better." Dave moaned. "I can't even get my PPE on properly."
"P..P..E?" Sam repeated in confusion as he kneeled down.
"Yes. Personal protective equipment. I want to be prepared for the worst if we get to ride these things." Dave said.
"Oh, I gotcha." The gamer replied, before scratching the back of his head. "But Chris did say we're only designing bikes, right?"
Dave stopped tugging at the strings on his knee pads, and gave Sam a wide-eyed look.
"Oh…" was all Dave could say.
[Confessional: Dave]
He facepalmed twice in quick succession. "Ughhhhhhhh… what have I been doing all this time?" he moaned.
[Confessional: Sam]
"You know," Sam began, "I actually think Dave is onto something. There's no reason Chris would just have half of us do all this while the other half sit out for nothing." he put a hand to his chin. "I wonder what that is."
[Confessional end]
"Well, Scott's taking care of my bike, so it's only right I take care of someone else's. Here…" Sam extended a hand to help Dave off the ground. "Let's go get some parts and catch up."
Dave smiled before the scene flashed forward to Trent and Ella sitting beside each other as they were assembling their bikes, each with a wrench in hand.
"This is.. exhausting." Ella commented has she put both hands on her wrench, struggling to tighten a bolt that connected her bike's body to the tire.
Trent turned to face her and, using his own tool, secured his teammates' bolt with ease. As soon as he finished, the two locked eyes and smiled. Said smiles faded a second later as a pair of shoes stepped in front of them. They looked up and saw the curious look from Owen's face.
"Awwwww, how sweet, you guys!" Owen commented gleefully, putting both hands to his chin.
Trent glared at him, seemingly disappointed. "Don't you have a bike you're working on?"
"Well, I.. uh.." Owen stuttered, before Rodney called for him offscreen.
"Hey bud, can you give me a hand?"
Owen flinched, before turning to look back at the two again. "Well, I gotta go. Bye!" He ran away towards Rodney's direction. Trent shrugged as Ella put a hand on his shoulder.
"What?" He asked sternly.
The princess took her hand off and just gave him a worried look. Trent reciprocated the expression and put a hand to the back of his head.
"Sorry…" he apologized, "I've just been feeling tense about, y'know, that night." he looked down and sighed. "How I and Zee almost got chewed to pieces by mad turtles."
"No no!" Ella said, voice loud but sympathetic. "I completely understand. That must have been stressful for you both…"
"No doubt." Trent responded. "Let's just focus on our bikes for now."
"Yeah. The sooner we're done, the sooner we can relax." agreed Ella.
The camera shifted over to the left, where Owen held onto the front wheel of Rodney's bike as the latter attached the body to it with a hammer and nail.
"Hey Rodney, do you remember your first bike ride?" Owen asked curiously.
The boy in question paused to think. "Um, hardly. I haven't even owned a bike since I was eight or nine." Owen looked at him in disbelief as he sighed. "Yep. One time, my foot got caught in the pedals, which made me lose f-focus and crash into my little brother."
"Really? That's a bummer." Owen replied. "But… why stop biking because of one itty-bitty slip-up?"
Rodney frowned at Owen. "I still blame myself for it." he said.
"Well, you shouldn't." Owen told the farm boy, putting his hands up. "It was an accident, after all."
"It was, but it doesn't matter. At least, not in the eyes of my dad." replied Rodney as he looked down. "Since then, my dad threw away my bike as punishment. The only reason I can even build bikes to begin with is because he…" Rodney stuttered as Owen gave him a sympathetic look, "f-forces me to help him in his repair shop."
"Dude…" Owen said, putting a hand on Rodney's shoulder.
[Confessional: Rodney]
The farm boy put a hand to his chin, looking worried.
"D-did I really just vent my problems out like that?" he asked the confessional camera, moving both his hands to his knees. "I mean, I've never been good at confessing my feelings or t-talking about life back at home..." he paused briefly before smiling, clenching his fists with excitement, "Thanks to Owen's encouragement, maybe I have a chance at f-finding love..." Rodney waved a hand in denial, "not that I'm into Owen, or dudes or anything."
[Confessional end]
The ten campers who volunteered per Chris' request all stood in front of the cabins next to one another, almost forming a circle.
"Aren't we gon' get started or what?" Sugar huffed, crossing her arms. "We don't got all day."
"Chris did say he'll be back soon enough." Courtney said.
"But can you really trust Chris of all people?" asked Jasmine rhetorically, shrugging. "I mean… yeah." she paused and put a hand on her other arm.
"Trust Chris?" Brick questioned Jasmine, turning to face her. "We've hardly known him for a few days, what makes you say that?"
The Australian girl put a hand behind her head and gave the soldier a nervous look. Before Jasmine could respond however, a high-pitched honking sound could be heard. As if on cue to the groups discussion about the host, Chris, riding the ATV, drove up and stopped in front of the teens.
"What was all this talk about me?" He asked curiously.
"Erm…" Jasmine paused and looked down worriedly. "Nothing."
"Mhm, that's what I thought." Chris replied with an eye roll. "Now, can you all come with me?"
[Commercial break]
The scene opened up with the ten volunteers looking at Chris, who was standing next to a standard yellow bike with a basket and horn hanging from the front. Behind said bike stood Dave in his PPE.
"Very interesting…" the host walked over. "But also very safe, I must say."
"Yes, you know what they say: Safety comes first, hehe." Dave replied with a nervous chuckle.
Chris put his finger on the horn, causing it to emit a high-pitched whistle sound.
"Hey, that sounds just like my own whistle." Brick commented.
"Uh-huh." Chris muttered, before moving away from Dave's bike over to another one on the left: A black bike with large bat wings on the sides, as well as two fangs sticking out the front and a skull attached to the handles. Behind it was Scary Girl, her hands up in a clapping posture.
"Yeesh," Chris said warily, "talk about spooky."
Scary Girl put her hands on her hips and stared at the host angrily as he walked over to the next build: A small, purple tricycle with wooden rear wheels, a rubber front wheel, and a Maple leaf logo on the front. Next to it stood Owen.
"Not too bad." Chris commented, putting a smile on Owen's face.
The scene then flashed to show the next camper beside their build: Rodney and his four-wheeler with a steel body, a seat made of hay, and pillows attached to the sides with rope.
"Indestructible." Rodney proudly complimented his own build.
"And undeniably weird." added Chris as he shrugged. "This looks more like an ATV if anything. Eh, whatever."
Another flash changed the scene to show Sadie standing next to her bike, which had one wheel made of wood, the other a monster tire, and the body seemed to be a bunch of metal pieces held together by string.
"Lame." The host commented, turning away.
The next four bikes were shown in quick succession with no commentary: Trent's green bike with guitar strings attached across the body, Ella's pink bike with heart cutouts glued all around the body, Noah's standard gray bike with monster tires, and Sam's brown bike with the replica of a gamepad attached to the front.
The final scene flash was on Scott. His bike had a body made entirely of steel rod, with the exception of the front which had a yellow button with an exclamation mark on it. Chris noticed and moved his hand to press it.
"Wait!" Scott yelled in a panic, grabbing the host by the arm, stopping him.
The host yanked his arm away and glared at him. "What?"
"I uh," Scott struggled to find an answer. "It's better if we… save it for later?"
"...Fine. Guess this isn't winning." Chris said casually.
"So what was the point of not having us ten take part in building these bikes?" Bowie asked with a shrug.
"Oh, you see, that's where it gets good. We're gonna race these babies!" Chris announced.
"Just as I thought." Scott replied.
"Since there's so many of you left, we figured we'd split you up. Half of you make 'em, the other half of you race 'em, if you get my gist!"
"And that's where we come in, correct?" asked Courtney.
Chris sighed, looking slightly defeated. "Too many questions…" he then smiled, "but yes, you'll be the one's riding them. And as a twist… you will not just be riding any bike. Instead, you'll each be randomly assigned a bike from someone on the OPPOSING team."
Scott gasped loudly, causing Sam and Dave to look at him.
"Uh, you good dude?" The gamer asked.
"Y-yeah. Just… this is s-surprising, is all." Scott muttered nervously.
[Confessional: Scott]
"Well god dammit!" Scott pouted, crossing his arms. "I guess sabotaging Sam's bike was a waste of time then."
[Confessional end]
"Now then," the host pulled out two bike helmets and held them upside-down, each containing several slips of paper. "Pick a name out of the helmet to determine who's bike you're riding. Bass, left helmet. Gophers, right helmet."
The scene flashed forward to show all ten riding campers on the beach with their designated bikes, each team on either side of the host.
To the left of Chris, Bowie hopped on Scary Girl's bike with a hesitant look, Courtney awkwardly sat on Owen's unicycle, Dakota slid on Trent's bike as she was occupied by her phone, Raj jumped on Ella's bike excitedly, and Sugar gripped the handle on Rodney's ATV confidently.
To the right of Chris, Axel jumped onto Dave's bike, Brick gave Sadie's build a disappointed look, Jasmine sat in Noah's bike uncomfortably, Leshawna hopped onto Scott's metal rod rider, and Zee took a sip of his soda as he sat in Sam's bike.
As soon as all ten riders were lined up just behind the white marking across the sand, Chris hopped on his ATV and spoke.
"Here's how this works. Your task is to ride one full lap around the island, all while avoiding hidden pitfalls…" he turned to face away from the campers, "cue the death traps!"
The footage changed to show a set of narrow slopes as Chris narrated. "There's dodging the land mines..." several explosions suddenly came from underground.
The next scene focused on a rectangular pool of water with a raw piece of meat hanging from a rope. "Jumping the piranhas..." Said meat was dunked underwater and never resurfaced.
Another flash took the scene to a large puddle of crude oil. "And finally, maneuvering through the oil slick."
The camera returned to the campers, all of whom gave various looks of fear and dread towards the host, as he finished his instructions.
"First team to get three of their members across the finish line wins invincibility. Got it? Good." he gave a thumbs-up and grinned.
All ten campers put on serious faces and put one foot on their bikes as Chris put his hand up to start the race. "Okay, racers... on your marks... get set..." The host briefly turned away, keeping his hand up, "paramedics on standby... aaaaaaand..." he turned back, smiled, and dropped his arm.
"Go!"
The moment Chris started the clock, everyone had taken off. That was, everyone except for one, who was visibly struggling to get their ride going.
"Come on, move it!" Leshawna angrily barked at her ride, kicking the pedal numerous times. She looked up at the host with worry. "Chris, somethin's up with this thing."
Chris shrugged. "Not my bike, not my problem."
The scene moved to ten of the eleven campers who were spectating from the small cliff overlooking the beach, most of whom were sitting at the edge. Sam looked at Leshawna having trouble with Scott's build, then at Scott himself, who was casually eating from a bag of chips.
"I thought you worked on bikes at home all the time?" asked the Gamer, confusion in his voice.
Scott shrugged carelessly. "I don't know, must've been a fluke somewhere." he then threw the empty chip bag aside, got up, and walked away in the direction that the bikers were going.
Sam slowly nodded and turned away as his look of worry faded. "Eh, it's cool. At least she's not on our team, heheh."
Sadie, who sat next to Sam, gasped. The gamer turned her way. "What's up, Sadie?"
"It's just that..." she paused, putting a finger to her lip, "Say, is Brick on our team? Oh my gosh, I am so sorry-"
"What are you apologizing for?" asked Noah dryly, standing behind her. "He's a gopher. I take it you did something wrong when you made your bike.. given that reaction."
"Um, yeah. I forgot the bolts, or whatever they call them." Sadie responded, putting her hands up. "Oh, I hope that Brick guy is doing okay though..."
The scene then transitioned to the player in question, who looked intensely focused as he rode down the beach. A creaking sound came from the rear wheel, earning his attention, before it fell off the bike's body. Brick screamed as the handle bars also came apart, along with the rest of the two-wheeler, causing him to crash face-first into the sand.
Another scene transition took the focus back to the spectating campers, where Emma, who walked toward her team from the left, spoke. "Just saw Brick crash." she informed them nonchalantly. "And Leshawna isn't going anywhere, so it's looking good for us."
"Oh no..." Sadie said, looking down sadly, "I hope that Brick guy is doing okay..."
"You already said that." Noah replied.
"Well Sadie, consider yourself lucky that Chris swapped out the bikes. We'd be behind otherwise." Emma added, rather annoyed as she crossed her arms. The girl she was addressing looked down again and sighed in defeat.
The scene flashed forward to the same slopes that Chris narrated on from earlier. Sugar was the first to cross through, shouting "Yee-haw!" as she successfully jumped each hill. Axel rode right behind her, maintaining a blank expression, followed by Bowie and Raj side by side, both boasting confident looks. Dakota was next, though as she was riding, she held a phone in one hand, not paying any mind to the path ahead of her. The steep hills caused her to drop the phone by accident.
"Wait, I need that!" She shouted in panic, looking behind her. Almost immediately, a land mine activated from underneath her, blowing Trent's bike into ruins and sending her flying off with a scream. She soon landed in the same small pool of water from Chris' narration earlier.
Dakota resurfaced, spitting out water. "Hey, what gives? I was using that!" she shouted at seemingly nobody, raising an arm. As she finished, a piranha surfaced and bit her shoulder.
"Ahhhh, get off me!" she wailed, frantically splashing the water. Her aggression caused more piranhas to jump out and attack her, making her scream further while Sugar and Axel, now side-by-side, rode through the pool with ease.
[Confessional: Dakota]
Dakota was soaking wet and had noticeable bite marks on her arms and shoulders.
"Ugh, this show is so gross!" she ranted, throwing her hands up in frustration. "Not even a hundred-grand can fix all of the damage to my hair. I spend hours, upon hours making sure my looks are top-notch for Chris and his ratings, and this is how he repays me?"
The second she finished, a piranha jumped out from below, making Dakota flinch and curl her legs tightly as the confessional cut out.
[Confessional end]
The next scene was on Courtney as she rode Owen's unicycle up to a small puddle of oil with a determined look.
"Come on, Courtney, you can prove yourself!" she muttered.
As soon as she said that, a voice got her attention from behind.
"Me too, yo. Rockin' this roller." Zee said calmly, holding a can of soda in one hand as he petaled directly behind Courtney.
Courtney quickly took her eyes off the soda enthusiast and gasped upon seeing that the oil slick was right in front of her. She quickly swerved to the left and sighed in relief, while Zee rode his bike straight through the oil and struggled to maintain control. A second later, he fell off and landed face-first with a soft 'oof' sound, but not before throwing his soda off into the near distance. The can made a hissing sound as it hit the sand and opened, releasing it's orange liquid directly in front of none other than Courtney.
Having no time to react, Courtney widened her eyes and gripped onto the handles of the unicycle hard, but she immediately fell over as soon as her tires made contact with the lost soda. She groaned and put her head face-down in the sand.
The camera panned up to the cliff to show Scott having witnessed the two crashed, where he quickly backed away behind a bush with a disappointed look.
[Confessional: Scott]
"Not only does Chris swap out our bikes, but the tire's on Sam's bike should've deflated after I snuck chunks of stick in there!" Scott argued, throwing his hands in the air, clearly frustrated. He paused for a second before hanging his head down. "I guess I only have myself to blame, for once."
[Confessional: Courtney]
"Ugh! I just wanna prove that I can stand on my own two feet as a team lead- er," Courtney said before pausing, "team player. Yeah..." she looked down and sighed.
[Confessional end]
The focus was back on Leshawna as she angrily slapped the handles of her bike, before frantically observing it and noticing the yellow button on the front, causing her to gasp.
"Finally!" Chris voiced, agitated. "Now, can we see what that does?"
"Ya shoulda pointed it out to me, yeesh!" Leshawna complained, as she slammed down on the button with her fist. The moment she did this, the engine roared to life, making her look around in concern.
"Ummm, is this thing saf-" before the Gopher could finish, her ride suddenly accelerated at an unmatched speed, more than ten times faster than any other bikes. Leshawna, screaming nonstop, was carried around the island in a matter of seconds, as clouds of dust could be seen from a bird's eye view of the whole island.
Chef, standing next to the white finish line and holding a small white flag, was instantly covered in a pile of sand as Leshawna zoomed past him, before a loud crash was heard. Chris and the eleven spectating campers cringed.
"Ooooooh, that's gonna leave a mark!" The host commented, smiling in delight. "Leshawna makes a miraculous comeback, meaning the Gophers only need two more cyclists to win."
The scene flashed forward to Sugar and Axel, both of whom were still riding side by side. Axel glanced at Sugar and smiled confidently. Sugar looked her way and gave a look of confusion.
"The heck is funny, zombie girl?" Sugar asked, frantically looking back and forth between the sandy road and her opponent.
"In front of you." Axel said, as she petaled harder, gaining a slight lead over Sugar, who looked forward to see an oil slick in front of her. She clenched her teeth and swerved Rodney's ATV to her right, successfully dodging the obstacle. She then glared at the zombie girl and rode up to her. Axel, not noticing that her Bass opponent was right there, got caught off guard when a hand swatted her face.
"Hey, get off me before I-" Axel yelled as she reciprocated Sugar's move and used her right hand to fight her off.
The camera cut back to the finish line, where Chris watched curiously as both girls, still swatting at each other, crossed the finish line simultaneously and crashed the next second. Another moment later, they quickly got up and continued attacking each other, with Axel trying to grab Sugar's fists as the former threw kicks her way. Chris put his hands behind his back and strolled over casually.
"Um, ladies? It's over." Chris told them. They both paused for one second before resuming their fight. The host shrugged and turned away. "Either way, that's 2-1 for the Gophers. Can the Bass pull it together or is it about time that the Gophers win? Time to find out..."
A flash took the scene to Bowie and Raj riding side-by-side. Both smiled at each other before Raj turned to focus on the road. Bowie however, kept his eyes on his teammate for another second, before a thump sound came from his bike and he found himself trying to regain control.
"Woah, woah, woah!" he yelled out, closing his eyes, putting a foot on the brakes and coming to a stop. He opened his eyes and sighed in relief. "Phew, that was a close one."
The next second, he gave a look of confusion as he saw Raj moving backward toward him. The hockey boy stopped right next to him with a concerned look.
"Hey, you okay bro?" Raj asked.
"Yeah, thanks." Bowie replied. "But you know the rules, right? Why didn't you go on to the finish and score a point for us?"
Raj looked at him with wide eyes, before slumping down, slightly depressed. "Oh... right. Just, I didn't wanna leave you behind."
"Oh no no no, I'm sorry!" Bowie said in realization, putting a hand on Raj's shoulder. "I didn't mean to sound like that."
A second later, the voice of Jasmine grabbed both boy's attention. "Coming through, lads! Watch out!" The two Bass looked at the Gopher with worry as she rode past them, then at each other.
"We'd better get going." Raj said in alarm.
"Right." Bowie agreed, and both took off after her.
The camera moved over to Chris, with a hand over his eyes, observing Jasmine approach him near the finish line.
"Looks like we got someone coming!" Chris announced, and as soon as he did, the five spectating Gophers erupted in cheers.
The camera shifted over to Jasmine, who looked up, and upon seeing the finish line where Chris and Chef were standing, smiled. Said smile quickly faded however, as Bowie and Raj slowly caught up to her, both on either side of the Australian girl.
The camera moved around Jasmine to show Bowie as he frantically looked back and forth between Jasmine and the finish, before locking eyes with the former and sighing very audibly.
"I'm sorry, girl." he said subtly, making Jasmine gasp as he leaped from Scary Girl's bike onto her, knocking both of them to the ground with a thump and making their bikes fall over.
"Bowie!" Raj shouted back, drifting sideways and stopping his bike just after crossing the finish line.
"And Raj scores for the Bass!" announced Chris.
The hockey boy leaped off his ride and attempted to run to the wreckage that Bowie and Jasmine were in, but was stopped by an arm. Chris' arm waved up and down as he stepped in the way of Raj.
"Nuh-uh" Chris said, "No helping. Once you finish, you're finished." he turned to face the camera as Raj grit his teeth in worry. "Speaking of finishing, the next person to get their bike across the line wins it for their team!"
The two campers who had just crashed and were mere feet from Chris perked up, before glaring at each other. Four more seconds later, they had already gotten up and picked up their respective rides.
Bowie attempted to run around Jasmine with a smirk, but she quickly took note and blocked his way with her bike, before kicking the sand in his direction, sending a cloud of dust in his vision. The Gophers cheered once again, this time earning Jasmine's attention.
"I'm gonna do it!" Jasmine yelled, grinning and pumping a fist as she pushed her bike towards the finish. The camera focused on her, before shifting over to the cloud of sand covering Bowie almost entirely. Out of nowhere, his bike came out of the cloud at full speed and rolled across the finish line, intercepting Jasmine and her bike just one foot away.
Chris widened his eyes, and all eleven spectators were left in shock along with Jasmine. The sand cloud dissipated and revealed Bowie with his hands spread out, revealing that he pushed his spooky ride.
The bat wings on the bike flapped rapidly, making Scary Girl, the bike's builder, clap her hands and grin widely.
The host shook his head and spoke, raising his arm and dropping it in quick succession. "And Bowie once again wins it for the Killer Bass!"
Said team, Scott aside, erupted in cheers, while the Screaming Gophers groaned.
"Gophers..." Chris looked up at the five who were watching, "it sucks to be you right now, but no way around it. I'll be seeing you tonight, where someone will be riding off the island." he chuckled. "Get it?"
Jasmine fell to her knees and put her hands to her eyes.
[Confessional: Jasmine]
"I'm... never gonna do it." Jasmine said in a shallow tone, looking depressed. "Why can't I prove myself for just one challenge? I know this is only the second one, yet it feels... like it'll never stop." she sighed, hanging her head down.
[Confessional end]
The scene was now in front of both cabins, where the sky shone bright orange to indicate evening, and all ten Gophers had gathered in a wide circle.
"I can't believe it." Axel huffed, crossing her arms. "Does anyone know how to ride a damn bike?!"
"Relax, Axel." Brick told her, also crossing his arms. "Fighting over this is gonna get us nowhere."
"Hahahaha" Owen laughed at Brick.
Trent glanced at him in annoyance. "What part of that was funny?" he asked Owen sternly.
"RELAX-EL!" he blurted out, covering his mouth in an attempt to calm himself.
Zee was noticeably dizzy and put his hands out to maintain his balance. "Yeah man, let's.. all.. relax-el."
Axel facepalmed as Scary Girl put her hand up, getting most of the Gopher's attention. "Yes, Scary?" the survivalist asked.
"I say we should all vote for who we think is the weakest!" she voiced enthusiastically, pointing her fists upward. "Simple as a pimple!"
Leshawna looked at her hesitantly and nodded. "She's... right. We have to drop someone tonight, and better it be whoever's contributing the least."
Jasmine sighed. "Yep. Let's just get this over with." Ella, looking at her worried, put a hand on her shoulder as the scene cut out.
[Confessional: Ella]
"The way Jasmine has been acting lately is making me worry for her well-being." Ella said. "And it's not just her, I hope we can all support each other through this game. Poor Jasmine..." she looked down. "poor animals."
[Confessional end]
A full moon overlooked the island as a bonfire became visible from miles off the island. The camera cut to the elimination area, where the ten remaining Gophers occupied all but one of the log seats. Chris walked over and placed a plate of marshmallows on the empty log.
"You've all cast your vote and made your decision. There are only nine marshmallows on this plate. When I call your name, come up and claim your marshmallow. The camper who does not receive a marshmallow must immediately return to the dock of shame, catch a ride on the boat of losers, and leave." he instructed, putting a finger up.
"The first marshmallow goes to Axel..."
"Trent..."
"Ella..."
"Brick..."
"Rodney..."
"Leshawna..."
"Scary Girl..."
"Jasmine..."
One by one, all eight announced campers got up and took a marshmallow off the plate, afterward moving off to the side. Only Owen and Zee remained seated, both looking at the lone treat on the plate anxiously.
"Campers, this is the final marshmallow of the evening..."

"...Zee."
Said camper sighed in relief. "Aw yeah." he pumped a fist, got up, and took the final marshmallow, leaving Owen to stare in shock.
"Sorry big guy," Chris apologized, "but your time has come."
Owen started to tremble, putting his hands to his head before he got down on his knees and wailed. "Whyyyyyyyy-y-y-y?! Why, why, why?!"
Trent sighed, taking a step forward with a sympathetic look, and putting a hand to the back of his head.
"Well, you could've helped out more and didn't take the game seriously." Trent responded. Owen looked up at him upset as the musician offered a hand. "But... I'm sorry if I was rude to you earlier. Here."
Owen reluctantly took it, helping him get on his feet. He gave Trent a sad smile before walking out of the ceremony.
The scene flashed forward to Owen walking across the dock. The boat stopped in front of him, but before he hopped on, a voice rang out to him.
"Wait, bud!"
It was Rodney, who ran up to him, slightly panting, before looking at his then-teammate with a smile. "I just want-ted to say.." he started to say. Owen looked at him confused.
"Thank you." Rodney took a heavy breath. "For listening to my problems a-about my past. You didn't..." he put a hand on the back of his head, "deserve to go home."
"Ah, it was nothing, don't sweat it." Owen told him cheerfully. "Be brave and don't let anyone get to you. Good luck." he waved as he stepped on the boat.
Rodney nodded and waved back as Owen was carried away from the island, eventually disappearing into the dark of night.
[Confessional: Zee]
"Welp." Zee began. "The last day or two could have turned out better. I nearly got eaten by a bunch of ol' turtles, crashed a bike or two, and nearly went home." Zee looked down briefly, before smiling. "But hey, the big Zee is still here and ready to play!"
Once he finished, he heard the sound of a wolf howling, making him flinch. He looked at the camera with wide eyes as it cut out.

Authors note
Well, that's a wrap... for the time being. I hope you all enjoyed reading this chapter. It took more time, words, and thought, but I'm pretty proud of this chapter. At least, a lot more so compared to the first two chapters.
Owen... I really wanted to keep him around for a bit longer, but there were never really any plans I had for him, especially since Noah is on the other team and there's other comic relief that I felt were ideal to prioritize in the long run. Sorry, Owen fans.
When I was coming up with ideas for the challenge, I decided it would be easier to divide the campers into two groups, mainly because this allowed me to focus on one for each half of the chapter without worrying about the other. That, and the sudden death twist from Canon was something I didn't want to try and navigate through, so I just figured... why not just have it be one big race with the obstacles involved?
In any case, thank you all for reading and until next time, take care!
