"Keep up! Stay together!" Firestar yowled, jade green eyes glowed silver in the dark as they gazed over the heads of her Clanmates. "We'll head to Sunningrocks." Boney, half-starved cats were streaming past on either side of her, their fur bristling.
"Keep an eye on your denmates. Don't lose sight of one another." Graystripe, ThunderClan's called to the mass of streaming cats who surged up and out of camp and into the ravine.
The gray tom was doing a headcount. Firestar walked up to stand beside him, surveying her Clanmates as they walked past.
Firestar's gaze snapped onto Sandstorm as the she-cat marched up the rocky ravine. The new mother was swaying slightly, still too weak to properly move and hunger was taking its toll on the Clan in the near emptying forest, but the first time queen refused to give up the small pale-ginger ball of fur that was clamped between her jaws. No matter how much Brackenfur tried to persuade her into giving the kit to another warrior to carry.
Firestar shot to her paws, worried for her friend but Brackenfur waved her off, telling her with his gaze alone that he would look after Sandstorm. The pair passed without too much issue. Sootfur and Squirrelflight followed behind the mated pair, bringing Stonekit and Flamekit with them.
The ones that were at the rear of the group were Mothwing and Spottedleaf, bringing bundles of herbs that had been made prior and split between them. Spottedleaf set down her bundle of herbs, signaling for Mothwing to keep going when the apprentice tried to linger, and turned her attention to her leader, "I've never seen anything like this happen before, Firestar."
Firestar managed to subdue an instinct to bundle herself up into Spottedleaf's soft fur like a frightened kitten. The ThunderClan leader was sure that Spottedleaf would allow her too, but that wasn't what the Clan needed in a leader, they needed to be reassured that they would be looked after and be taken care of.
"I honestly think that the Clan had never had to deal with something quite like this before, Spottedleaf." Firestar replied, then added hopefully, "Has StarClan spoken to you?"
Spottedleaf looked thoughtful for a moment. "They have--"
"Then what have they said?" Asked Graystripe, butting into the conversation, his paws were flexing their claws in the ground. "What has StarClan told you?"
Spottedleaf gave a slow blink, her half-lidded amber eyes glimmering in recollection. "They have told me that help is returning home-"
Graystripe seemed relieved by Spottedleaf's words, but Firestar could see that there was more to the situation. "What else, Spottedleaf?"
Spottedleaf muttered to herself for a moment before replying, "though help is returning to the forest, great danger already lurks within it. A danger that none can stop."
Both ThunderClan's leader and deputy shared a sharp inhale. "But you said that help was coming!" Graystripe cried, horrified.
"And they will help." Spottedleaf reassured. "Just not in the way we expect them too."
The trio shared a solemn silence. This was the end of their home. They all felt that it was. However there was still hope, regardless of how small that hope was.
"We'll stay at Sunningrocks until this help arrives or we receive further news from StarClan." Firestar murmured, looking over the destruction of their home. Everything looked dead, most things were dead. "I just wish we were all going."
Graystripe pressed reassuringly up against Firestar's side, and the flame-colored leader took comfort in the gesture. "I'm sure the others will be able to find us."
"What if the Twolegs were the ones that had taken Spottedfeather? What if they had her captive this entire time? Now Leafpool, Cinderpelt, Sorreltail--"
Firestar was silenced when a gold-and-brown-striped tail lightly rested against her muzzle. "Peace, we'll see them again."
Firestar's eyes met Spottedleaf's. The assurance that Firestar saw within them made something settle in her chest. But the pounding of multiple paws suddenly reinforced that unsettling fear as Rainwhisker and Dustpelt came into sight and stopped Infront of the trio, seemingly out of breath.
"Something's happening at Fourtrees!" Dustpelt yowled.
Both toms turned and broke into a run, and Firestar and her other two companions rushed after him. All five cats skidded to a halt at the top of a slope, looking down into a steep-sided hollow.
Bright, unnatural lights, sharper than moonshine, blazed against the trunks of the four giant oaks that had guarded this sacred place since the time of the Great Clans.
More lights shone from the eyes of huge monsters squatting at the edge of the clearing. The Great Rock—the vast, smooth gray stone where Clan leaders stood to address the Gathering each full moon—looked small and exposed, like a kit crouched on a Thunderpath.
Twolegs scurried around the hollow, shouting at one another. A new sound sliced through the air, a screeching, high-pitched whine, and one Twoleg raised a massive shiny forepaw that flashed in the brilliant lights. The Twoleg pressed it against the trunk of the nearest oak, and dust flew out from the tree like blood spraying from a wound. The shiny forepaw howled as it bit viciously into the ancient bark, pushing deeper into the tree's heart until the Twoleg cried out a warning and the hollow rang with a crack so loud that it drowned the rumbling monsters. The great oak began to lean over, slowly at first, then faster, faster, until it fell crashing to the ground. Its leafless branches clattered as they struck the cold earth, then stilled into deathly silence.
"StarClan, what are they doing!" mewed Spottedleaf.
There was no sign that their warrior ancestors had seen what was happening at Fourtrees. The stars glittered coldly in the indigo sky as the Twoleg moved on to the next oak, his forepaw screaming for another kill.
The cats watched in horror as the Twoleg worked its way around the clearing until the last oak had been felled. Fourtrees, the place where the four Clans had met for many, many generations, was no more. The four giant oaks lay sprawled on the ground, their branches quivering into still- ness. Twoleg monsters snarled at the edge of the clearing, ready to move in to carve up the fresh-kill, but the cats stayed frozen at the top of the slope, unable to move.
"The forest is dead," murmured Rainwhisker. "There is no hope left for any of us."
"Have courage." Spottedleaf's eyes glittered as she turned to face her Clanmates. "We still have our Clan. There is always hope. Help will arrive on the feathers of a crow."
