When the sunset faded into night time, Morningpaw found it hard to sleep in the reedbed that made up the apprentices' den. Though the way the light had reflected off the rocks, empty shells, and feathered decorations that filled each corner of the den were stunningly beautiful, they didn't compare to the woodland smells of ThunderClan's warriors' den.
Morningpaw felt homesick for a home and friends that she no longer has. Anemoia, as she once heard described by a cat once. What a silly sounding word that holds so much weight to Morningpaw's situation.
Morningpaw's ears pricked as she listened to Whitepaw turning in his sleep, his snowy-white paws limply waving in the air as he slept. He must be having a good dream. Morningpaw watched him for a few moments, before standing up from her nest, making sure to be careful as not to wake Silverpaw from where she was curled up in the nest next to Morningpaw's own.
The reincarnated ThunderClan leader quietly slipped out of the apprentice's den. Everything was so much quieter in RiverClan's camp, there weren't any trees or woodland creatures making any sort of noise, just the sounds of the river.
Morningpaw followed those sounds and found herself back to the place the new RiverClan apprentice had her first swimming lesson. It had been so humiliating. Morningpaw had never failed so badly when she had been a ThunderClan apprentice. Maybe that's what she was always meant to be. A ThunderClan warrior. She was certainly better at it than being a RiverClan apprentice.
Morningpaw sat at the river's edge, gazing off in the direction of ThunderClan's side of the river, wondering to herself what was happening now. Is Tigerclaw planning to murder Redtail soon? What about Graypaw and Ravenpaw, were they okay? And Yellowfang, how will Morningpaw help Yellowfang and put a stop to Brokenstar? Spottedleaf…So many important aspects of Morningpaw's life. So many tragedies. How will Morningpaw ever stop them all now?
"Come here for a few secret swimming lessons?" Morningpaw nearly jumped out of her fur, whipping her head around and she found Oakheart steadily approaching, his sleek, reddish-brown pelt glowing silver in the moonlight. "Or is there another reason you're awake so late?"
Oakheart came to settle down beside Morningpaw at the riverbank. His sleek fur brushing up against Morningpaw's fluffy dark flame-colored pelt, Morningpaw had not yet taken on the slick, glossy fur as the other RiverClan cats but it was beginning too.
"I just-" words failed to express how Morningpaw felt, how can she tell anyone what she knew, they wouldn't even believe the flame-colored she-cat apprentice. They'd label her insane and kick her out of the Clan.
Morningpaw just left her words hanging. Unable to speak when she couldn't find the words to string a proper sentence together. Instead her jade green eyes glanced down into the steady flowing river. They were glowing silver, just like a StarClan ancestor would. Was StarClan watching Morningpaw right now? Are they regretting giving Morningpaw this second chance?
Instead it was Oakheart that eventually broke the silence, "You remind me of someone that I deeply care about." The RiverClan warrior meowed, gaining Morningpaw's attention.
"Who?" Morningpaw asked.
"Someone who seemed equally lost and unsure of themselves. Someone who was deeply guarded but was truly amazing when they opened up. I see that in you." Oakheart's eyes found Morningpaw's in the river. The two cats are staring at one another. Neither breaking eye contact. "Eventually that cat went on to do great things but made many sacrifices in order to do so. Made many hard choices. I see that in you."
Morningpaw couldn't look away. Not when Oakheart leaned over to place his chin on her head, and gently rubbed in a show of comfort. "Giving up your life as a kittypet must have been hard, but I see that you are special and will do great things for RiverClan."
I want to do great things for ThunderClan. Morningpaw wanted to say, but stayed silent as Oakheart pulled away. Turning towards the RiverClan warrior, Morningpaw blinked up at him, seeing Oakheart for the amazing cat that so many had told her about in her past life as a ThunderClan apprentice.
"Thank you," Morningpaw rasped, her throat suddenly dry as bone.
Oakheart's whiskers twitched, turning back to the river. "Though I can teach you some more on how to swim." Morningpaw was going to decline until Oakheart added on, "I'm sure if you improve then you can have a one up on Shadepaw."
Now how is Morningpaw supposed to decline such a compelling offer like that?
