I got a request for Hailey having a dislocated shoulder
The team was searching a warehouse for a suspect. They were chasing him and he ran in there. It was dark even with their flashlights. Jay and Hailey got separated because of how dark it was. They were looking for each other when Hailey got grabbed aggressively. She screamed and Jay heard her and started trying to run toward the sound. The man slammed her on the ground, dislocating her shoulder in the process. He tried to fight back but he punched her in the eye. He was wearing a ring with spikes and it stabbed her in the eye. Jau found them a second after and got the man off of her and in cuffs. He shined his light on her and she was squeezing her eyes shut. Jay radioed the team where they were.
"Hails, are you ok? Can you open your eyes for me?" Jay asked frantically.
Hailey tried to open her eyes and immediately squeezed them shut.
"No oww it hurts" Hailey cried out
"Ok ok sssh you ok" Jay soothed. "What else hurts?" he asked.
"My shoulder. It hurts so bad" Hailey cried out.
"Ok ssh I'm gonna take a look," Jay said.
He turned on his flashlight and looked at her shoulder. He could tell it was dislocated.
"Oh, baby I'm so sorry I think your shoulder is dislocated," Jay told her.
"It hurts so bad" Hailey cried.
"I know it does I know ssh. Squeeze my hand" Jay soothed.
The team got there a few minutes later.
"What the hell happened?" Voight asked when he saw Hailey lying on the floor,
"The suspect attacked her. I heard her scream and when I ran over, he was on top of her. He dislocated her shoulder." Jay explained.
"OK, I'll call for an ambo. Kevin take him out of here.
Voight radioed for an ambo and Kevin took the suspect to his car and drove back to the district.
Sylvie and Violet got there a few minutes later.
"What happened" Sylvie asked.
"The suspect attacked her. Her shoulder looks dislocated and she can't open her eyes" Jay replied.
"Ok, Hailey what's your pain level?" Sylvie asked.
"9. It hurts so bad," Hailey replied.
"Ok we're gonna get you some relief" Sylvie replied.
Violet started an IV and pushed morphine.
"Ok, Hailry I apologize if it hurts but I need to look at your eyes," Sylvie told her.
Hailey tightened the grip she had on Jay's hand. Sylvie looked in her left eye causing Hailey to cry out in pain and squeeze Jay's hand hard. When she looked in her right eye nothing happened.
"Ok, sweetie good news is I don't think you have a concussion. Bad news I think your left cornea is scratched." Sylvie told her.
"Ugh," Hailey groaned.
"I'm going to get your arm in a splint and get you on the gurney. I apologize in advance for any pain" Sylvie told her.
Hailey got her arm into a splint which caused her to cry out in pain.
"I know I'm sorry honey. I just gotta get you on the gurney now" Sylvie told her.
She lifted her onto the stretcher, causing her to scream in pain.
"What hurts Hails?" Sylvie asked.
"My back" Hailey replied.
Sylvie sat her up causing her to groan in pain. She lifted her shirt and saw bruises all over her back.
"On honey, I'm so sorry," Sylive said.
She activated some ice packs as Violet drove. She put multiple on her back, one on her shoulder, and one on her eye. They got to the hospital a few minutes later.
"Hailey Halstead 32-year-old female dislocated shoulder, possible broken ribs, and possible scratched cornea. Sylvie told Natalie and Will.
They got her transferred onto the bed and got xrays of her shoulder, back, and face
"Ok, Hailey your shoulder is dislocated. We need to get it back into place. You don't have any broken bones in your face and have a few cracked ribs." Natalie told her.
Hailey groaned and squeezed Jay's hand.
"I know I'm sorry. I'll give you meds beforehand and it'll be quick," Natalie told her.
She injected fentanyl into her IV and gave it a few minutes to work.
"Ok Hails I'm going to get your shoulder back into place now," Natalie told her. Hailey death gripped Jay's hand. "Ok here we go 1,2,3" Natalie popped her shoulder back in causing her to scream in pain.
She was squeezing Jay's hand as hard as she could and crying.
"Ssh it's over you did so good I'm so proud of you" Jay soothed.
"I know I'm so sorry sweetie" Natalie apologized.
"How's your shoulder feeling? Any better?" Natalie asked.
"No, it still hurts so bad," Hailey replied.
"OK, I'm gonna order some scans after we get your eye taken care of.
Natalie gave her a concussion test and determined she didn't have one.
"OK Hails no concussion. I'm gonna look at your eye now" Natalie told her.
Natalie left the room to get some supplies. She came back in a minute later with April.
"Ok, so I need to see how bad the scratch is I'm gonna put some dye drops in your eye and then use a special light to see how bad the scratch is," Natalie told her.
They dimmed the lights and April held her eye open.
"This might sting a little" Natalie warned. She poured three drops in her eye and it stung. Hailey whimpered in pain and squeezed Jay's hand.
"I know I'm sorry I'm almost done," Natalie said as she turned off the lights. She quickly looked at her eye with the light and saw the scratch. Much to her relief it wasn't bad.
"Ok, I'm done. The good news is it's not a bad scratch. It should be fully healed in two to three days. For now, I will give you numbing drops and antibiotic drops" Natalie informed her.
Natalie put both drops in her eyes and sent her up for scans of her shoulder. She got an MRI and it showed that her raptor cuff in the same shoulder she dislocated was fully torn. Dr.Smith read her scans and went to tell her the news.
"Hey Hailey so unfortunately your scans showed that your rotator cuff is fully torn and will require surgery." Dr. Smith told her.
Hailey began to cry and Jay kissed her head and comforted her. "Ssh it's ok I'm here for it all I'm not going anywhere" Jay soothed.
Jay texted the team an update. A few hours later Hailey went up to surgery. Will made small talk with Jay when she was in surgery. Dr. Smith came out an hour later.
"She did great. She is in recovery now. You can go see her now." Dr.Smith told them.
Jay and Will got there and she was still asleep. She woke up a few minutes later and was in pain.
"How are you feeling Hails?" Jay asked.
"It hurts" Hailey replied.
"I know I'm sorry. Squeeze my hand I'm here I've got you" Jay soothed.
Dr.Smith came in a minute later and pushed pain meds and got ice for her ribs.
"Your surgery went great. I want to keep you overnight for observation but you can go home first thing in the morning" Dr.Smith told her.
The rest of the night was uneventful. The meds made Hailey super tired so she was out most of the night. She got discharged the first thing the next morning.
"So I've sent pain meds and a muscle relaxer over to your pharmacy. You shouldn't need the muscle relaxer but it's there just in case you do. You can go back to work on desk duty in two weeks which is when your follow-up appointment will be" Dr. Smith told her.
"OK. When can I go back to the field?" Hailey asked.
"Unfortunately it'll take about 6 to 10 months for you to be able to fully return to work," Dr.Smith told her as she began to cry.
"I'm so sorry baby," Jay said as he pulled her into a hug,
Hailey cried the whole way home and Jay held her hand. When they got home she had a headache from crying and fell asleep. They spent the next few days curled up in bed cuddling and watching movies. Hailey had to take her pain meds so she didn't have much energy to do anything else. She was also sore because of her ribs. She was also having nightmares since everything that had happened had reminded her of her childhood. Luckily, they weren't bad and Jay was able to calm her down relatively quickly. Voight had given Jay a week and a half off. Two days before Jay had to go back, they decided to get up a little early and grab breakfast since Hailey wasn't as dependent on the prescription meds and had more energy. They went to IHOP for breakfast then came home and turned on a Christmas movie. Once it was done they ate lunch. After she ate she went to get a piece of gum from her bag. She went to grab her gum and saw her wallet was gone. She grabbed the gum and went over to the bench where she usually kept her purse thinking it had just fallen out. She got to the bench and it wasn't there. She looked under the back and it wasn't there either. Jay came over to her when he saw her looking under the bench.
"Everything ok?" Jay asked.
"I'm sorry" Hailey whimpered, scared.
"Hey baby why are you apologizing? You did nothing wrong" Jay asked.
"I don't know where my wallet is. I'm sorry i promise ill find it." Hailey pleaded.
"Hey, it's ok I'm not mad. It happens I'll help you look. Your safe Hails" Jay soothed. Jay looked at her and saw she was shaking and holding back tears. "Oh baby cmere," Jay said as he carefully pulled her into a hug. Hailey couldn't hold back the tears anymore when he hugged her. "Ssh your ok it's ok I'm here I've got you your safe" Jay reassured her.
Hailey pulled away a minute later.
"I'll help you look it's ok," Jay told her.
"I'm sorry," Hailey said.
"Hey no don't apologize it's ok," Jay told her. He knew she had had a traumatic experience with losing her wallet and losing things in general from her childhood.
They searched the entire house and couldn't find it.
"I gonna go look in the truck. Are you gonna be ok here alone for a minute?" Jay asked, Hailey nodded.
Jay searched the truck and couldn t find it. Hailey began to cry again when she saw him come back empty-handed.
"Hey SSH it's ok. I'll call the restaurant its probably there." Jay told her as he grabbed his phone.
He called the restaurant and much to his relief it was there.
"The restaurant has your wallet. It's ok. We can swing by later." Jay told her.
"Ok. I'm sorry I freaked out, it just scared me because of my childhood." Hailey replied.
"I know babe I'm so sorry but I promise you your safe with me" Jay reassured her.
Hailey was exhausted from her panic attack so she fell asleep while Jay held her for two hours. When she woke up she was still anxious. It was only 12:30 so they still had most of their day left.
"How about we spend the rest of the day watching Christmas movies, decorating the apartment, and making Christmas cookies while listening to Christmas music.
"I would love that but we don't have the ingredients for cookies" Hailey replied.
"That's ok. I can easily run out and get what we need" Jay told her.
"Ok I love you" Hailey replied.
"I love you too," Jay told her as he kissed her,
Jay made hot cocoa and popcorn. They watched Home Alone 1 and 2 which they both loved, when the movies were over, Jay could tell Hailey was still tense.
"How about you go take a long hot bath?" Jay suggested knowing it was one of the main ways to calm Hailey's anxiety.
"That sounds great" Hailey replied.
Jay drew her a bath and put her aroma therapy stuff in it. Once it was ready she got in.
"I'm gonna run to the store. Call me if you need anything" Jay said.
Jay went to the restaurant and picked up Hailey's wallet and then, went to the store to pick up supplies for cookies as well as stuff for broccoli cheddar soup which was a comfort food for the both of them, especially during the winter months.
He got home a little under an hour later, hailey came out of the bathroom a few minutes after he got home. They spent the rest of the day making ginger snaps and spritz and decorating their apartment for Christmas. Jay made the soup for dinner and they watched more Christmas movies until bedtime. They went to bed and Hailey had a nightmare soon after. Jay woke up to Hailey having a nightmare. It was her worst one since coming home the previous week.
"Ssh Hails your ok your safe it's not real. Your here with me" Jay soothed.
Hailey calmed down a few minutes later but was still crying a little.
"You ok?" Jay asked.
Hailey shook her head "What happened this morning reminded me of my childhood" Hailey replied.
"I'm so sorry Hails. I will never hurt you. You are safe with me. I know it might be hard for you to believe this because of your childhood, but I won't ever get mad at you for losing something or making a mistake. It happens to everyone. I promise I will never get mad at you for telling me something. You can tell me anything. I will never get mad and I will never hurt you. Your safe here I love you so much" Jay told her while wiping the tears from her face with his thumbs,
"Thanks, babe I love you too" Hailey replied.
Jay grabbed her hand and carefully pulled her into his chest. He fell asleep soon after but Hailey didn't. This attack had brought up memories she hadn't thought about since she was in college. She hated it. She stared at the wall for most of the night and when Jay woke up he could tell she was tired. She was also sore. The combination of the panic attacks and nightmares aggravated her ribs.
"How are you feeling babe?" Jay asked.
"Tired and sore" Hailey replied.
'I'm sorry babe. I'll get you some ice. Stay here I'll be right back." Jay told her.
He went and got some ice packs as well as some Advil and a glass of water. He took everything back to their room and Hailey took the Advil as Jay put the icepacks down for her to lay on. She laid down on the ice packs and fell asleep soon after. She slept for 3 hours and then woke up hungry. Jay reheated some soup and brought it to her in bed, after eating. Hailey was still in pain so Jay went and drew a bath and put Epsom salt in it. They sat in the bath and talked for an hour. Jay washed her hair since she couldn't because of her shoulder. They both got out and Hailey laid on her stomach on the bed so she could ice her ribs. Jay came into the room and put the ice on her back. He then went to brush her hair and she jumped away from him as soon as the hairbrush touched her.
"I'm sorry please don't" Haikey cried.
Jay could tell she was in the middle of a flashback. He pulled her into a tight hug and rubbed her back. "Sssh, your safe Hails it's Jay. your with me safe in our apartment. Your not there anymore no one is going to hurt you your safe" Jay soothed. She snapped out of it a few minutes later.
"You ok babe?" Jay asked.
"No. this whole thing is bringing up so many bad memories. I havent thought about some of them since college. I thought I forgot about them. I wish I did. I promise you I'm not scared of you. I know you would never hurt me. It's just hard." Hailey told Jay.
"I know your not scared of me Hails. You were having a flashback you couldn't control it."Jay told her.
"I don't know what happened. As soon as the brush touched me it sent me into a flashback of when my mom used to hit me in the head with a hairbrush when I would move or make a noise because she pulled my hair or something when she was doing my hair. I hadn't thought about that one in so long. I honestly forgot it happened" Hailey replied.
"I'm so sorry Hails. I promise you I will never hit you and I will never hurt you when doing your hair on purpose. If I'm hurting you just tell me and I'll stop. I know I've said it a bunch but I promise you I will never hurt you, you are safe with me." Jay told her.
"Thank you I love you" Hailey replied.
"I love you too," Jay said as he kissed her head.
"Can I brush your hair for you babe?" Jay asked, Hailey reluctantly nodded. "It's ok babe. I'll go nice and slow. I'm not going to hit you. If anything hurts let me know" Jay said and Hailey nodded.
He carefully and gently brushed her hair. She flinched a few times but otherwise did well.
"Good job babe you did so good. I'm so proud of you" Jay said as he kissed her head.
"Thanks" Hailey replied as she sat up and cuddled into his side.
They spent the rest of the day watching TV and cuddling. Hailey's anxiety was still bad and she was still struggling with the bad memories that were brought up but Jay's speeches and his being there for her helped tremendously. Jay had to go to work the next day but Hailey still had a week until she went off. She was bored without Jay. She didn't like being alone. She was super excited when the week was over and she could go back to work even though it was desk duty.
She had her follow-up appointment with Dr.Smith and it went well. Everything was healing as it should and she would be starting physical therapy in a month.
Over the next month, Hailey gained most of her independence back. The only thing she couldn't do yet was drive but she could wash her hair on her own.
It had been a month since her injury and she was now starting physical therapy. Jay drove her to her first session and waited in the waiting room. When she came out she had a bag of ice wrapped around her shoulder. Jay held her hand the entire way home. When they got home Hailey was sore so Jay gave her Advil and held her while she iced on and off. The first two months of physical therapy were quite painful but Jay was there for her every step of the way.
After 8 months of physical therapy, she was cleared to go back in the field. For the first two months of going back in the field, she would be sore if she used her shoulder a lot. Jay gave her massages whenever this happened and she did stretches that she learned in physical therapy and it helped.
Hailey was glad she had someone to take care of her no matter what. She didn't have that in her childhood. Jay vowed to give that to her.
A/N I am having a bit of writer's block on what to do next. I am struggling with feeling like I am being a bit repetitive. Requests would be appreciated. I havent written Hailey and Trudy for a while and want to but don't have any ideas. Lastly. I am on my winter break now so I will be able to post a lot more.
