High School has to be some of the best years of your life- College is the after party. And that party is coming to an end. With two more semesters left, and the last batch of exams ready to be pulled out of the oven and scrumptiously eaten by unassuming students; It was almost over.
-and thank ghoul.
Finally it's her senior year; It's the last time she'll ever be in college, last time she'll ever have to put up with long nights and nosy peers- and most importantly; The last time she'll ever see Johnny Worthington.
—Or any of the other frats and sororities that plague her days by either pranking all her- erm, all the school labs; or keeping her awake by parading through the dorm hallways at three in the morning.
Freedom is only a few months away, and she'll have graduated from Monsters University and finally be a top scientist working on all the ways to improve and innovate the scare industry. Oh, it was just giddy to think about. It's all smooth sailing from here.
Leasa Larv is hardly what is to be considered an anomaly; In the fact that she lacks anything that makes her stand out, in the same way, she is still considered abnormal by everyone who is the norm.
She's a scrawny bug-like monster, specifically what a human would call a fruit fly; with colors of blue and turquoise, with furry black arms and legs, a pair of sand colored wings on her back. Wearing oversized red and white floral shirt that she snagged off a senior last year—Which he claimed was a real human Palaka, as if— and a short black skirt from the time she thought joining HSS would be a good idea, can you believe that?; along with her square glasses that probably need to get replaced sooner than later- Maybe she did grab a few eyes, given monsters aren't exactly a clothing-comfortable society, not yet at least. But growing up in a small town up south, clothing was an old tradition that she held onto.
She walks out of the dormitory building, laying eyes on all the club venues setup in the Quad; and the sea of students, both new and old, walking around. She had reentered school a week before it even opened up again for new students; she had spent the summer living with her one and only out of school friend- not that she didn't have any in-school friends, not to brag, but she was kinda popular, people want to hang out with her all the time. So, she's completely set up and totally prepared for the upcoming year.
—Coincidentally, her final days are left completely open and her completely bored. She could go out with people? Well… she could, but… if there's one thing she knows, it's that she's gonna need a day to breath fresh air before she completely isolates herself in her notes. Plus, she needs to check up on her baby: her final project.
Walking through Campus, trying to appear slightly interested in the Freshmen Orientation event, she dodges other monsters as she makes her way towards the door lab- having short conversations with other clubs and its members.
"Hey, come by later?"
"Sure."
"Help out on movie night?"
"I've got time."
"Could you pass these out.
"Totally."
"Can you come to my moms funeral?"
"Uh…"
"Can you fix our film cameras?"
"I've got you, man."
"Would you look at this?"
"Why not."
See? Popular.
"Larv!" She hears Brock Pearson yell at the top of his lungs just as she walked by, right before she could escape.
Leasa stopped in her tracks. "Hi…"
"You back on for another awesome year!?" He asks, still very loud, shaking his fists enthusiastically. Leasa had been lightly participating in the Scare Games, mostly helping out the Greek Council but never truly joining. Claire Wheeler, sitting beside him, rolled her eyes, but Leasa could easily see the faint blush on her pale cheeks.
"Umm, totally." Her plain dead response only wavered his hype slightly.
"Ok!" He says right back. It's like nothing can put a major dent in his relentless enthusiasm.
"You're gonna be helping out again, right?" Claire asked. "We're running low on volunteers. Unsurprisingly." Which means Leasa—and all the people who will only be convinced to help if she lets them cheat off her homework— will be left with running all those leftover errands.
"I can see if-" Leasa wanted to say she was gonna be busy, or at least lie and say her calendar was full. But truthfully, she literally had nothing else to do but study and study; plus some other irrelevant boring stuff. Unfortunately, all this volunteering work has extra credit and experience included in doing them. "Yeah. Yeah, I'll be there."
"Sweet." Claire said, leaving the conversation to write something down.
"Nice catching up." Leasa replied robotically as she walked off. It didn't stop her from hearing the two whisper as soon as they thought she was out of earshot. She continued her way through the rest of the crowd: But just before she could reach the shiny glass doors, she heard an aggravating, grating voice.
"Oh Mah Ghoul!" Came the city accented voice of Stacey Filler; Self appointed vice president of the Engineering Council- as in she's in charge of it, but apparently she has to share that spot with Ethan Rot; Second self appointed vice president. Both equally incompetent, both hate each other, and both equally a threat to Leasa's peace of mind. Despite Leasa's opinions, the two were smart, exceptionally even.
"Yes, Stacey?" Leasa spoke through grinding teeth as she reluctantly turned around.
"Linda-"
"It's Leasa." Pronounced like 'Lisa', many people got it wrong- And hey, she gets it, really weird spelling, but it's not her fault her parents spelt her name wrong on her birth certificate! Still, no matter how many times she corrects people, teachers or fellow students, they always manage to forget it and mess it up anyway.
"Ok, Lera-" Forget it. Leasa huffed quietly and barely tuned into whatever Stacey was saying.
"Yeah, yeah, totally..." Leasa nods along thoughtlessly, hands aimlessly on her hips as she glances elsewhere. She was broken out of her trance by a stack of flyers being shoved into her chest.
"We also need you to pass these around," Before Leasa could even protest, Stacey spoke again; "—Also! Could you help some of the other guys bring in more scream cans tomorrow? You're the only one that has an unrestricted key for after hours."
"Wait-"
"Ok, thanks again, bahyyy!" Stacey then walks off, leaving Leasa with a pile of posters. This was not the first time this has happened, and it wouldn't be the last, she knew that for sure.
Leasa sighed before continuing her journey to her home that she loves more than her own home- the door labs.
They were bustling with returning students and new ones. Some were already working on their finals, and others were taking part in the Freshman Orientation tour. Leasa makes her way past all of them, and enters the Innovation Room, which is technically a place where students come to brainstorm, and you can tell by all the whiteboards and scattered sticky notes. This was practically Leasa's area, as no one uses it as much as her.
This used to be a classroom, or maybe a teachers office, but it's unofficially hers now as 'President' and management of the Engineering Committee. You'd assume it'd be harder than it looks, but all she has to do is set up the times and dates for fairs and events, help out sometimes, and… yeah that's mostly it.
She was elected after a miserable series of failures of presidents that just got in because all their friends voted for them in- they had to implement a policy that they couldn't run again after how bad it got. Leasa got in because she had the highest grade average and she seemed responsible enough; there are many misconceptions about quiet students- and none of them actually fit Leasa.
Just because she wasn't talked to didn't mean she didn't talk. She was hardly quiet at all, she was loud plenty of the time. She just knew the time and place for stuff like that, where she should let loose and be vulnerable.
She dropped the pack of flyers on a desk, forgetting about them the second they left her hands. She goes to the back of the room, seeking out an object hidden under a large brown tarp, surrounded by boxes and such for extra camouflage. She carefully pulls the tarp off, revealing a red scream can- but more modified and enhanced. Better.
Leasa smiles, crouching in front of it. She could see her reflection in its shiny red surface. This was her baby; an innovation she's been working on for a long time now.
—And it was beautiful. Clearly this will jump start her career as an innovator. All she didn't was a roar powerful enough to fill it; just to make sure it can handle what it's supposed to, though she's 100% sure it will. There's no way it couldn't.
'You are getting me out of here.' She smiles in admiration at the inanimate object.
The bug monster stood up, hiding the invention again, treating it like one wrong touch would taint it forever. After it's hidden once more, she sits on a swivel chair next to the desk.
After spending a couple minutes mindlessly spinning around, Leasa hopped up. She surveyed the room. She should really organize some time. Nah, she's a scare tech major, she doesn't have to do that. Maybe she could trick some of the freshmen into doing it- on second thought… No, that's a horrible idea, ain't no way they're organized enough for her liking.
Suddenly, Leasa remembers the real reason why she's in the Innovation Room in the first place. She grabs a plan book off the desk; a notebook full of all the engineering clubs agendas and what not. She spots her MU jacket hanging off some other junk; she completely forgot about that jacket over the summer. 'Oh, nice.' She thinks. She grabs it and throws it over her shoulders.
She got the jacket during her freshman year of college, trying desperately hard to get into the scare crowd due to a very unfortunate crush she had on- …someone who just happened to be in the scare program.
She glances back at the flyers on her desk. She might as well hand them out and at least put them up. Or… she could go back to her dorm for the rest of the night- damn it, she gotta help transfer scream cans. She is reminded of Stacey's request. Despite technically being in charge, everything went to her without anyone else lifting a finger to help, and if she didn't do it, no one else would. Or, at least they didn't do it right.
She walks out of the Innovation Room, she reads the flyers; they were always a bit cheesy with bright colors and overly enthusiastic phrases. Being 'laser focused' on the papers in her hands, Leasa didn't notice a blue monster suddenly noticing her.
"Larv!" Fey said, strolling towards her. Fey was a Fearleader; someone who gives the new students campus tours. And just her luck, Fey was leading a small pack of wild freshmen to her.
Fey turns to her tour with one of those wide exaggerated smiles; "Everybody, this is Leasa Larv, President of the MU's Engineering Committee!"
The pod of freshmen looked at Leasa with curious eyes, in a way, trapping her in a metaphorical corner.
"If you have any questions, don't be shy, raise your hand high!" Fey spoke enthusiastically, doing that weird rhyming thing all Fearleaders do.
Some students raised their hands, confidently or nervously, it was clear by their faces they had questions. Before any of them could get any words out, Leasa shut the interview down;
"I don't have any time for questions right now- but I think the guys- the Committee are doing this whole thing, uh- here take these." Leasa glances at the flyers, and then starts passing them out, giving each monster at least three or four so she'd get rid of the entire stack easily. "Give them to your friends- or something."
The flyers have the academic Engineering Committee student tour. It's mostly for the new engineering students, showing them around the schools and classes, and informing them of events and how to get into the Committee, stuff like that.
She made a quiet escape. Leasa exited the door lab. The sky was bright with not a cloud in sight, the air was warm. The weather was nice. She didn't feel the need to spend any more time looking around campus, so back to her dorms it is— and she should have returned sooner because the halls were crowded.
She had to maneuver around numerous freshmen and other monsters just to make it to her room, and it was a grueling experience having to go shoulder to shoulder with these guys, accidentally bumping into people and having to forcefully squeeze by.
A sigh of relief almost escapes her mouth when she unlocks the door, but she was met with a surprise. It was unlocked for some reason? Which is weird because she never leaves without locking her room.
She rushes into the room, forgetting to close the door behind her. She finds a pile of luggage loosely thrown around on the opposite side of her room- the side that's been empty for what could be almost a full semester.
Damn it. Brooklynn's back.
Her roommate for the last two years, meeting halfway through their sophomore year. All the first year college bliss they had during their first year ran out by the time they met. Her coming back was the one piece of information that was given to her not too long ago, something she had been regressing because she really didn't want it to be true.
This girl had tried to join a sorority; Slugma Slugma Kappa to be specific. That's why she moved out. But through some dramatic turn of events, she had been kicked out— And now she's back.
In the now occupied bed was a purple cyclops monster who was currently sucked into her phone. This was Brooklynn Haze, scaring major. Brooklynn looked up, remaining quiet. Brooklynns unphased face looked at Leasa's shocked expression. The silence between them— not including the gum the Brooklynn was chewing which was the loudest thing in the room—was deafening.
"Hey." Brooklynn replied with a dull tone.
"Hi." The response fell out of her mouth immediately after, and then came another batch of awkward silence. Brooklynn goes back to looking at her phone. To wear off the painful hot feeling of frustration and embarrassment in her chest, Leasa walks over to her desk, setting down the management book when she pulls her seat out. She spots her own phone and picks it up, unplugging it after too many hours of charging.
There's a couple notifications, but they were nothing more than emails about the many groups she's helping out in; the Engineering Comittee, The Greek Club, and- Tutoring. She's been tutoring for two years now, though it's debatable if she's good at it or not. She's been told she's too 'abrasive', whatever that's supposed to mean.
There is one text though! From number 555-0148. Leasa smiles, opening her messages to see what optimistic nonsense Celia Mae sent her. Having been her former roommate for almost two years, Celia Mae has been Leasa's best friend since they met in their freshmen year.
The message was something along the lines of "congratulations!" And "I'm so excited for you!", finishing off with a joke about praying that Leasa gets a better job than Celia's after graduation.
—Celia had dropped out after their sophomore year started, and got an internship at Monsters Inc, working with files and taking phone calls.
Leasa replies with a bunch of random emojis, and then puts her phone down; and just when she was about to pick up the management book, the lights turned off. The room went completely dark. She turned around in her seat, seeing Brooklynn in bed, already asleep.
You're kidding. They're already off to a rocky start. Again.
In all the time Leasa had known Brooklynn—which wasn't much—, the other monster wasn't too keen on sleeping early; in reality, Brooklynn was always out, either with friends or partying. It doesn't matter. It might make Leasa's life easier- she'll probably spend a lot of nights out anyway in the lab. As quietly as she can, she slips into bed, begrudgingly deciding against working late. People can call her rude, but don't ever say she's a bad roommate.
—But it doesn't matter, because her senior year is gonna go perfectly. She's been waiting for this since she even knew Monsters University existed, and she wasn't gonna let anything or anybody ruin it. Not this time.
