The next few days were spent Randall glued to her side. When he wasn't hanging out with his roommate— who he doesn't talk about other than a few side comments— he rushed to her side with questions and such, never satisfied if there wasn't a proper answer.
It was like looking in a mirror.
—And it wasn't like Leasa wasn't getting anything out of it. Randall listened to her endless rambles, actually understanding what she was saying, and Leasa laughed at all his bad jokes.
"So… what's with the whole squinty squint you're doing?" Leasa asked bluntly. They sat on a bench in the quad, conversing in the nice sunny weather. For a while, she had noticed Randall's eyes and the curiosity was beginning to nag at her.
"O-oh, I don't have my glasses right now." Randall replied, speaking as if it was totally normal.
"Wha- I haven't seen you wear glasses once!" Leasa exclaimed. She could hardly imagine going a day without her glasses. Getting them literally changed her life.
"-Because I stopped wearing them."
"Why?" Leasa asked, completely flabbergasted.
"Uh… Well, I was told it made me scarier…?" Randall confessed.
"Sure…" She nodded slowly, biting her tongue. Who even cares about scariness when you can't even see two feet in front of you?
During this nice sunny day Leasa described as near perfect, Javier Rios walked by, surrounded by numerous peers- none that belong to the ROR house, but no doubt scare students or other frat boys- He didn't seem to notice her, at least he didn't make it obvious. But Leasa knew he saw her. They were always aware of each other, even though they wished they didn't even know the other existed.
"Oh, right on time." Leasa frowned. The other blue bug-like monster pretended to hardly notice her until she spoke, and just the sound of her voice made him stop in his tracks.
"You got something to say, four eyes?" Javier asked, looking over his shoulder, before turning to face her front and center. Javier and Leasa glared at each other.
"Rios."
"Larv."
"What're you doing around here? Don't you have another frat party to 'bug' off to?" Leasa let out a single laugh, finding her own joke amusing. Despite being some of the only bug-like monsters on campus, Javier and Leasa couldn't be any different from each other; it was like Fire and Water, and they weren't turning into a chemical compound any time soon. Since they met, they have hated each other. No one knew why, and no one was willing to ask.
Javier stormed forward, getting into her face. He was only a few inches taller than her. "You. Me. Today, the first semester bonfire. One lap around the entire school." He growled.
"Don't get in over your head, Rios." Leasa smiled coldly. Racing was like her thing- growing up around never ending plains and corn crops, flying against her nieces and nephews was what she spent her entire childhood doing.
Before anything else could transpire, Javier walked off, leaving Leasa with a feeling of triumph.
She turned to the monster behind her. "So, Boggs… You, uh… feeling up for a bonfire?" Leasa asked with a weak grin.
Randall tried to intervene. "I don't think that's a good idea-"
"Come on, Boggs." Leasa threw an arm over the shorter monsters, shaking him encouragingly. "Don't be a coward- you're in the scaring program, ain't you?" Randall nodded along, nervous under her arm. Her risky move of going against one of the RORs concerned him a bit. But, he hoped she knew better, she's a senior after all, top of her class and everything. He's just gonna have to trust her, right?
He suddenly felt a hard slap on his back. Leasa walked ahead of him. "Alright, I've got class- see you, Boggs!" She gave him a small, lazy wave of her hand as a means of goodbye.
-
Scare Floor Prep; a scare class meant for seniors and only seniors. She's explained it before, but she didn't plan working on a Scare Floor- but rather shaping it anew.
"You'll need partners for today." The professor stated.
Some students quickly found their friends, while others just turned to the monster closest to them. Leasa glanced around. Ghoul, she hated group projects- especially after last year, when almost every group assignment she had ended in total disaster; with all her partners either never doing the work, or doing a horrific job at it.
"Leasa Larv, and Johnny Worthington, could you two come here?" The professor called out. The two sent glances to each other, before walking to the older monster's desk while the rest of the class went on their merry way.
"It seems you two put in numerous complaints about work partners not… doing their fair share of work? So… I'm going to pair you two together, that sound about right?"
Leasa's entire chill demeanor crumbled, and that was evident on her face. She imagines this is what having a stroke is like- because there is no possible way on earth that she was getting paired with Johnny Worthington.
Neither of the two responded fast enough to stop this sick twist of fate. "I'll take that as a yes." The professor said, quickling writing them down as lab partners on a note sheet, sending them to line up at one of the stations.
"I trust that you and I can come to an understanding." Johnny spoke, once he knew the two newly appointed lab partners were far away enough from listening ears or wandering eyes, every other student paying attention to the professor going on and on. "-Because I refuse anything under a complete passing grade."
Leasa, brought out of her meditative state, asked, glancing up at Johnny. "Refuse?"
"Yes, was I not clear?"
"I didn't take you for the type to care so much." Leasa admits coldly. His grades were spectacular. She's not sure he's ever failed a single course or class. He had a few fumbles, not that she stalked him during her early years of college or anything, no…
"Well, I'm a Worthington, and all Worthington are winners." Johnny shrugged casually.
"You're winning something alright…" Leasa mumbled under her breath. Unfortunately, Johnny heard her.
"Oh, really? I'm winning right now?" Johnny had to admit he couldn't stop himself from smiling- So what? She was just gonna admit he was winning? What were they even fighting about again?
"Yeah! At being annoying." Leasa snapped. She huffed. "Let's just get through this lab."
"Whatever you say, Larv. Let's not waste anymore time." Johnny led the way to an open spot in the classroom; which was an open area with large windows, letting the sun light in. There were fake scare doors set up everywhere, along with empty scream cans- kinda like how the scare simulator is set up.
The professor instructed them through their first introduction to the scare floor lab; safety rules, step by step emergency shut downs, all the basics. Johnny looked somewhat bored, but he nodded and smiled along like he understood- which he probably did, with his dad being Jack Worthington and all, CEO of Fear Co. For all Leasa knew, Johnnys probably been on the scare floor more times than the professor.
"Staring isn't very productive, Larv." Foiled again. Spying was much easier when Johnny didn't know she existed. "Though, I don't blame you." Johnny smirked.
"You know, the temporomandibular joint is meant to keep the jaw closed. Let's keep it that way." Leasa replied, almost smugly, but it was perfectly hidden behind a mask of near stoicism. Essentially, she was telling him to shut up, but unfortunately, society was long past the days where you could say something so coarse to someone of high status; with that, she'll have to stick with scientific metaphors that are riddled with more fact than charm.
Johnny didn't have much to say to that. He didn't have anything to say at all. But, like Leasa said, the -whatever it's called- keeps the mouth closed, and that's what it did as Johnny returned his attention back to the lesson at hand.
Funny enough, Johnny was the one sparing glances at her, taking every chance to look her way. There wasn't anything to it- Well, there was. He was trying to figure out why she was so… not like other monsters— But not in a good way, like his father had been, or his mom, or even himself. She refused to fall into society's mold, but from what he could tell, she wasn't really molding into anything; and from what he's heard, she expects everyone else to fall into her mold.
He didn't even know she even existed until like two weeks ago! Ghoul, she was so… weird- and not in a good monster way. But in a way his father would disapprove of, a way his mother would scoff at. Nothing he should associate himself with.
—But it looks like he doesn't have much of a choice in the matter. Not that she was happy about it either.
Both monsters kept their eyes and ears on the professor, although their minds were elsewhere, thinking up ways they'd like to kick the other out the nearest window.
'Ugh! He is insufferable.' Leasa would scream it out loud for all to hear if she could.
-
The night was cold, and Leasa couldn't wait to feel the fire warm her once they got to the ampitheatre. She missed last year's bonfire due to work- but now she can finally enjoy herself.
Spotting the purple lizard, Leasa's face actually up. "Yo, Boggs!" Leasa waved.
"Hey, Leasa!" Randall scurried up to her. There was a monster following him, green and orbish. Randall introduced him. "This is my roommate; Mike Wazowski."
Having finally put a face to the name, Leasa lacked the proper reaction to meeting the new monster. In fact, she had the exact opposite of the feelings one should have when meeting someone they have never met before that they have no ill grievances towards— And whatever it was, it made her want to punch him in the face. Whatever the strange familiarity was, she had no time to address it.
"Any friend of Randall is a friend of mine." Mike Wazowski lifted his hand up for her to take. Leasa had to hold down an amused scoff.
"Nice meeting you, little man." She shook his hand. Mike seemed a bit surprised by the new nickname, and didn't know whether it was an insult, or perhaps just a small joke- and whatever reaction Mike was having, negative or not, Leasa didn't care much for it. "You ready, Boggs?" She smiled flatly, stuffing her hands into her pockets.
Randall played with his fingers nervously. "Ready as I'll ever be, I guess?" He confessed.
Leasa playfully nudged him in the shoulder. "That's what I like to hear."
