Suddenly, the ground shook, stalactite's collapsing from the roof of the underground lair.
"What's happening?!" Liu Kang asked, rolling out the way of a stalactite before turning back to Shang Tsung.
He was gone.
"The islands collapsing!" Kung Lao yelled as he grabbed Liu Kang's arm, dragging him to the lair's exit.
"Where's Quan Chi?"
"He left through a portal as soon as the earthquake happened, must have a phobia."
"Or more so they anticipated this..." Liu thought aloud as the pair ran to the surface.
Meanwhile, Jax and Sonya were catching their breath after fighting Baraka. Like all the other Outworld representatives, Baraka too had retreated after the first earthquake.
"There's some rowing boats down there." Jax said, pointing to a small, decrepit dock.
"Who's that?" Sonya asked, facing a cave to her right.
It was a man who was holding a sack bag which looked heavy considering he was dragging the bag across the floor, his head turned away from where he was walking. He turned to see Sonya and was instantly recognized.
"Kano." She answered herself as she sprinted to him.
"Sonya where are you going?!"
Kano swung his heavy bag at Sonya, the bag's contents being gold. Sonya quickly recovered and charged at Kano again, grabbing Kano's arm and quickly disarming him of the bag by snapping his arm round her shoulder.
"Argh, you bitch!" He cried, drawing a knife and swung in an attempt to stab her in the back. Sonya quickly countered and tripped Kano, delivering a swift forearm afterwards.
Sonya kicked Kano, causing him to roll onto his back allowing Sonya to wail punches at his natural eye, the attack cut once Kano blasted his cybernetic eye at Sonya's shoulder.
Another earthquake caused the two to collapse a fair distance between each other, a decent sized ravine being formed between the two.
"I'll get you Kano." Sonya promised.
"Can't wait..." He muttered, picking up his bag of wealth, tracking back down the cave he left from.
Kano headed to the other side of the cave. Previously it led to a beach area which is where the islands hidden treasure was buried. But now the beach itself was buried under the sea. He scanned the area for a boat, a specific boat. He had called his partners in crime earlier on this day to wait on the outskirts of the island until he had located the islands treasures.
"Over here boss!" Came a friendly voice.
"Jarek?! Row over here, I'll hop in."
Jarek, the black dragons second in command, rowed into the cave edge to collect Kano. Jarek's company quickly sprung to his feet to aid Kano with his money bag.
"Get in here, you beautiful bastard." He shouted.
"No Face, why am I not bloody surprised?"
"He convinced me to take him with me." Jarek informed as Kano stepped in the boat.
"You're like a fucking Labrador." Kano compared, as he faced his masked colleague.
"Good to see you too!" He chuckled psychotically.
"You're only in it to see the gold."
"Did you get it?"
"Of bloody course I did! What d'you think was in the bag?"
"I was hoping to see an SF pig's corpse." No Face admitted.
"They aren't police you drongo."
"We in the clear Kano?" Jarek worryingly asked, interrupting the friendly argument.
"I hope so, wasn't present at one of the tournament rounds but I doubt that old git noticed."
"I'll get us out ASAP so we don't have to find out..."
Sonya ran back to where the dock used to be. It was now drowned beneath the sea. Jax was merely a dot of shadow because he had now left without her. Sonya realized that this was her fault and dug into her jackets pocket for her phone and tried to get a signal on her phone to communicate with Jax.
"Shit, nothing." Sonya reacted to the lack of bars.
"General Blade." Came the somehow collective voice of Raiden. Johnny Cage and Nightwolf were accompanied with him.
"Ain't that your buddy?" Cage asked.
"I got side-tracked..." Sonya for once gave Johnny an actual answer.
"Grab a hold of each other, I'll be able to perform one last teleport."
"With pleasure!" Johnny said, enthusiastically offering his hand to Sonya, only for it to get brushed away.
"Don't play games." Nightwolf said as he placed his hand on Raiden's shoulder.
"Fine." Cage sighed, he said, linking his arm to Nightwolf's and Sonya reluctantly contacting with Johnny's.
Eventually the four were teleported to the Shaolin Temple, Raiden chose this location, hoping Kung Lao and Liu Kang were also heading there.
Liu Kang and Kung Lao however, were still on the island, looking for an escape only to have encountered the Edenian pair of Jade and Kitana.
"Look, it's Liu Kang!" Jade said, grabbing her glaive.
"Jade, stop." Kitana demanded, "We don't have time to fight them."
The two were attempting to awaken one of the many hidden portals which were scattered across the island. Kitana had brief knowledge of the portals location but couldn't vividly recall.
"Need help?" Liu offered.
"Not from you." Jade remarked.
"There's a portal nearby." Kitana explained, "We're trying to unlock it."
"Um, Kung Lao?" Liu saw him meditating, he made no reply to Liu, he was heavily concentrating but it looked like he was entranced.
"Is this a joke?" An anxious Jade inquired, which nobody answered.
"That fool." Muttered Kitana, she referred to Shang Tsung "He never told us that the activation instructions were written in hieroglyph." She let out a sigh as she stared blankly at the wall that had hieroglyphic engravings on it.
"The portal is beneath us." Kung Lao informed, a blue spirit floating behind his back.
"Lao, behind you!" Liu Kang warned, unsure of the safety of this unusual being.
"It's him."
"No... How?"
"It is me; I am the spirit of the being referred to as The Great Kung Lao." He spoke, "Outworld's feat has freed the spirits of not only me but every fallen Earthrealm warrior who fell during participating in the tournament."
"It is an honour to speak to you." Liu Kang said as he made a gesture of respect to the spirit.
"Thank you, Liu Kang, for freeing me." He then looked down to make eye contact with Kung Lao "And thank you, Kung Lao, you're worthy of my name for the feats you have reached."
"I wasn't the one to save you..." Lao realized.
"That doesn't matter, you're an excellent successor. You've been pushed too hard, expectations exaggerated just because of your family tree. I'm sorry for the pressure that's been unfairly placed on you, but you appeared to have overcome it."
"Thank you, great-great-great Grandfather."
"We will speak again, but now you must leave." He said as he brushed his transparent hand across the hieroglyphics, causing them to glow.
Kung Lao and Liu Kang gave their farewells as the bricks they were stood on fell into the portal under them, the Shaolin monks and the two Edenians fell into the portal, none expecting the structure to collapse. Where would this portal take them?
